The most famous (and inked) anchor is
known as the “Admiralty” and consists
of a central shaft with a ring on top,
where the rope is attached. At the other
end there is a kind of curved, perfectly
symmetrical crescent shape.

illustration.
2 On the top cross draw two concentric
circles and draw another circle on the
left line.

edge of the circle, this is the guideline

outline of the body as shown in the

The best known form of a horseshoe,
a very popular lucky charm, is
U-shaped.
According to some traditions it
brings luck if it points upwards,
according to others when it points
down.
In the world of tattoos the direction of
the U is a personal choice, whereas
the style is usually American: old
school or traditional.

School classic:
the trefoil cross, with three “leaves” or
circular shapes that adorn the symbol.

right angles to one another and add
three circular shapes as shown in figure.

4 Decorate the wings in the

5 Go over the outline of the
drawing.
6 Colour as you choose. The

the same design five times.

Here’s a typical seafaring combo:
a nautical star + ship’s helm.

2 Divide it into 5 sections of 72° each.
3 4 Using the degrees as a guideline, draw your
star.
5 Rub out the lines you no longer need and you’ve
got a classic five pointed star.
6 Now, starting from the centre, draw the sections
of the nautical star: these are the straight lines that
divide each of the star’s points into two equal parts.
Next, use your pencil to extend the 5 lines indicated
in figure 6 outwards.

The hourglass represents the concept of

“time flies” or the inexorable passing of
time. It is also a symbol of polarity.
In a tattoo polarity can be represented
using symbolic images (male and female,
life and death, sky and earth or water),
drawn in the two halves of the hourglass,
contrasting and complementing each

There are many different ways to draw a
snowflake – here’s one that’s simple to do yet
effective. 9

4 You’ll end up with a kind of star with angles
that should be of 60°.
5 Draw two small circles at the centre of the
star.
6 Divide each angle into two sections of 30°
each – this is a useful guide for the next step.
7 Starting from the centre, decorate one arm
of the star with a fishbone pattern and finish it
off with a small circle.
8 Repeat this pattern on each arm of the star.
9 Eliminate the two central circles and there’s
your snowflake. Now you can go over the final
design in ink.

The razor is a classic of the traditional
style and designs always show an old-style
barber’s razor with a blade that folds into the
handle. Here’s how to draw a simple razor:

1 Draw two straight lines crossing at the 6

2 Sketch a blade over the right-hand line.
3 Use a pair of compasses to draw a semi-
circle from the outside end of the blade
towards the line on the left. This guide will
help you judge the size of the handle.
4 Sketch the handle over the left-hand
straight line.
5 Finish off the drawing by decorating the
handle and adding depth to the blade.
6 Go over the contours and eliminate the
lines that are no longer needed.

TWO HEARTS PIERCED

We all associate the image of a heart pierced
by an arrow with the idea of love. Two hearts
pierced by the same arrow, which unites
3 them, strengthens the concept even more and
represents the union within a couple. 8
1 Draw a straight line on a slight angle.
2 Draw the first heart on the line.
3 Draw the other heart overlapping the first
one slightly.
4 Next add the tip and the tail of the arrow at
the ends of the straight line.
5 Fancy adding a decorative element? Why
not draw a simple flower coming out from
4 behind the hearts.
6 Go over the edges of the drawing in black.
7 Erase the superfluous lines.
8 Use your pencil to add shading or else

1 Draw two concentric circles – you’ll

need them for drawing the first rose.
2 Sketch the flower stem underneath
the circles.
3 Sketch the leaves and the first
banner on the stem.

circles above the first two.
5 Sketch the second banner and add
the leaves.
6 Now draw the rose petals and the
nerve veins and finish off the banners.
7 Go over the edges in black. You can
add some wording to the banners.

A pag. 58 abbiamo visto come
disegnare due cuori trafitti da una
freccia. Stavolta i cuori sono legati
insieme da una catena, simbolo
dell’unione.
1 1 Disegna due rettangoli, l’uno
all’interno dell’altro. Lo spazio fra il
rettangolo piccolo e quello grande
dev’essere regolare per formare una
specie di cornice. Questa guida ti
serve per disegnare un anello della
catena.
2 Duplica la coppia di rettagoli,
rovesciando l’inclinazione del
disegno da sinistra verso destra e
sovrapponili un po’, come indicato
nell’illustrazione.
Ora hai lo schizzo con due anelli
della catena agganciati insieme.
3 Sull’estremità inferiore esterna di
2 ciascun anello abbozza il disegno di
un cuore.
4 Ripassa in nero le linee portanti
del disegno.
Attenzione: al centro, gli anelli della
catena si agganciano fra di loro e
3 all’esterno, ciascun anello trapassa
il cuore.
5 Se vuoi aggiungere una scritta,
perché non “per sempre”? :)
Nel nostro esempio la scritta è
in inglese, lingua molto usata
nei tatuaggi anche da chi non è
anglofono.
6 Cancella le linee che non servono
più ed ecco pronta la base del tuo
tatuaggio, che se vuoi puoi colorare.

On page 58 we showed you how
to draw two hearts pierced by a
single arrow. This time the hearts
are linked together by a chain,
symbol of union.
1 Draw two rectangles, one

inside the other. The distance
between the small rectangle and
the large one should be regular so
as to create a kind of frame. You’ll
use this guide to draw one link of
the chain.
2 Repeat the pair of rectangles,
this time with the slant of the
drawing going from left to right
and overlapping slightly with the
first, as shown in the illustration.
You now have a sketch of the two
links of the chain linked together. 5
3 Sketch a heart at the bottom
outside edge of each of the two
links.
4 Go over the main edges of the
drawing in black.
NB: at the centre, the links of the
chain are linked together and
each one pierces a heart at the
outside edge of the drawing.
5 If you’d like to add some
writing, why not make it 6
“forever”? :)
It’s written in English in our
example as it’s used as a language
for tattoos even by non-native
English speakers.

The golden rule is to make it regular and geometric.
1 Draw a cross.
30° 2 Divide the cross into regular segments, each with
1 2 an angle of 30°.
3 Add concentric circles with equal spacing
between each of them.
4 Start with the segments of one circle and draw a
semicircle facing inwards in one of them.
5 Repeat in each of the segments
6 Erase all the concentric circles and the straight
lines in the smallest circle and there you have it –
your spider’s web!

If you wish, add some pencil shading, taking care

over light and shadow proportions.

RAGNATELA
La regola d’oro per questo disegno è 6

Draw a SACRO CUORE

Il Sacro Cuore indica sempre un amore
eterno e profondo.
Questo tatuaggio può essere legato alla
fede e alla religione cristiana, ma può
anche rappresentare un affetto che ci
lega per sempre a una persona cara, di
1 2 solito un genitore, un figlio, un parente
o un amore che vogliamo portare con
noi per sempre.
1 Disegna mezzo cuore con una linea
tratteggiata che indica il centro.
2 Piega il foglio sulla linea tratteggiata
e ricalca l’altra metà del cuore, che
dev’essere perfettamente uguale alla
prima. Puoi fare il disegno anche a
mano libera, facendo attenzione alla
simmetria.
3 Sulla sommità del cuore accenna
due linee rette.
4 Sulle rette disegna una specie di
collo di bottiglia, è l’imboccatura del
sacro cuore.
5 Sull’imboccatura disegna una
fiamma.
3 4 6 Intorno alla fiamma aggiungi l’effetto
bagliore con delle linee disposte a
semicerchio. Sul cuore disegna un
cartiglio, dentro ci potrai scrivere un
nome o un breve messaggio.
7 Ripassa in nero il disegno definitivo
e cancella le linee che non servono
più. Ecco il tuo Sacro Cuore, pronto da
colorare!

SACRED HEART
The Sacred Heart has always stood for eternal and
deeply felt love.
This tattoo design can be related to the Christian
religion or it can represent a sentiment that ties us
to another person forever. This is usually a parent, a
child, a relative or a loved one who we want to keep
with us always.
1 Draw half a heart with a dotted line to indicate
the centre.
2 Fold the paper along the dotted line and trace
the other half so that it’s exactly the same as the first
one. You can also draw the heart freehand taking
care to make it symmetrical.
3 Sketch in two straight lines at the top of the heart.
4 Draw something like the neck of a bottle on the

Ora traccia le linee guida per disegnare il
fazzoletto che le copre la testa. Unisci i due cerchi
con una linea esterna (a) e in basso, dove la linea
esterna finisce, traccia una linea orizzontale che
attraversa il cerchio grande (b). Quest’ultima
guida indica dove finisce il fazzoletto.
6 Disegna il fazzoletto e aggiungi dei dettagli a 8
piacere per decorare il corpo.
7 Ripassa in nero i contorni e cancella le linee
che non servono più.
8 Ora colora a piacere la tua matrioska. RUSSIAN DOLL

the doll’s headscarf. Join up the two circles with an
external line (a) and lower down, at the point where
the external line ends, sketch in a horizontal line
to cross the large circle (b). This last guide shows
where the headscarf ends.
6 Draw the headscarf and add whatever details
you like to decorate the body.
7 Go over the edges in black and erase the lines
that are no longer needed.
8 Now colour your Russian doll as you prefer.
The cheeks and lips should be red but you decide
the rest!
