In
The Soldier

Women's Social and Political Union, a group of women called "The Suffragettes" who wanted the right

windows, hitting and spitting at policemen. Then women over 30 got the vote in 1918, while suffrage
was granted to women over 21 in 1928.The war helped determine suffrage because many women
took the place of men.
Anthropological studies
Growing knowledge and continued study shook faith and led to a search for the absolute truth of
religious and ethical systems.
THE MODERN NOVEL (180-181)
The Soldier
The sonnet The Soldier, written between November and December 1914, has a particular formal
structure, with two quatrains and two triplets.
The themes addressed are:
● the heroic vision of death: because dying for the country is considered an honor for the soldier
● patriotism: in fact, in the two tercets the sonnet invites the reader to imagine the poet, now
dead, tied to his beloved country that is compared to paradise. The repetition of the words
England and English express the poem's patriotic message.
● The relationship between soldier and motherland: which resembles the relationship between
a son and a mother. The son-soldier has the power to give life to the mother-country where
the soldier's body will lie.
WILFRED OWEN
Life and works
Wilfred Owen was born in 1893 and enlisted in 1915. 1917 was an important year: he was sent to
France and saw his first action but was wounded and sent to hospital in Edinburgh to recover from
shell shock. Owen returned to the front in August 1918 but was killed in a German machine gun attack
on November 4, 1918.
His poems are painful because they describe in great detail the conditions experienced in the
trenches by soldiers, in fact he is considered the greatest of war poets.
