INTRODUCTION
The ever growing demands by industry for increased automation and higher plant output rates resulted in the
development of generation after generation of higher speed, heavier duty modern bridge cranes. While
mechanical engineers concentrated their efforts on designing bigger and more efficient cranes, structural
engineers maintained an equivalent pace in improving crane girder, support structure and foundation designs.
Between these two fields of expertise lies the crane rail, which represents the hinge point of the installation.
Traditional rail mounting methods have, in general, not kept pace with the increasing demands made on them.
The result can be that this relatively inexpensive area, in terms of initial outlay and design, can cause
considerable operating expenses and problems. These problems manifest themselves by high wear rates in
wheels, bearings, axles and rails. High maintenance costs and significant down time are the ultimate result.
In the longer term, the impact and vibration transmitted to the girder structure and foundations result in structural
damage and possible girder failure due to fatigue.
FATIGUE
The area of contact between a steel rail and the top flange of a steel crane girder can be as little as one percent
of the projected area of the rail. Since both the rail and girder are stiff in compression, even heavy wheel loads
will not substantially increase the contact area, and very large local stresses result. To compound this problem,
these contact points are randomly distributed, leading to complex and indeterminate stress patterns in the
supporting girder. The continuously moving and shock loads, produced by the operations of the crane can result
in fatigue and consequent damage to both the crane rail and the girder. The most common manifestation is
cracking in the upper portion of the girder web.
Where rails are mounted on concrete, a similar rationale applies with resulting progressive disintegration of the
concrete and loosening of the hold down bolts.
CRANE RAIL MOUNTING
The GANTREX crane rail soft mounting systems have developed over 35 years in an effort to reduce the all too
frequent problems associated with crane rail installations. Todays line of mounting pads and clips are
sophisticated, proven and easy to install. They result in reduced mechanical wear, lower impact forces from
shock loading, less vibration and a quieter operation. These systems consist of steel reinforced, vulcanized,
synthetic rubber pads and resilient clips designed specifically for the mounting of crane rails in light, medium or
heavy duty applications.

CRANE RAIL CLIPS
FEATURES
BENEFITS
Lateral adjustability Absorbs initial rail tolerances
Facilitates future re-railing & realignment
Positive lateral rail restraint Keeps pad fixed laterally
Ensures constant rail alignment
Reduces crane skewing effects
Self-locking When torqued to specified recommendation, bolts will never loosen
and are locked in place
Side thrust will never overcome frictional resistance of the self-locking
design
Synthetic nose permanently bonded to clip
upper component
Prevents bolts from being overstressed from tension and fatigue,
by absorbing the uplift of the rail due to the bow wave effect
Allows predictable, controlled longitudinal rail movement due to
temperature changes and normal crane acceleration and braking
Precompresses pad, resulting in intimate contact between the rail,
pad and girder, minimizing wear
RESILIENT PAD
FEATURES BENEFITS
Vulcanized synthetic rubber material of
construction
Resists wear, as well as oil & grease
Reduces noise
Eliminates indeterminate concentrated loads by compensating for
the uneven surfaces of the bottom of the rail & top of girder
Centers the wheel load to reduce flexural stresses in the girder
top flange-to-web connection
Allows controlled transverse mobility of the rail head, which reduces
stress levels during wheel flanging, and absorbs the angular
misalignment between rail head and wheel tread
Life expectancy of the pad is normally 2-3 times the rail life
Extends life of the rail, girder, crane wheels and bearings
Eliminates fretting corrosion between rail and girder top flange
Extends life of electrical components on the crane
Ribbed construction Gives the pad a double-angled load/deflection curve which allows
it to be pre-compressed by the rail clip but support high wheel loads
without resulting in high flexural stresses in the rail
Compression of the pad under the wheel load does not result in pad
elongation, instead, the grooves fill as the wheel load increases
Edge seals Prevents the ingress of dirt and water which can cause premature
failure of the pad, rail and support structure
Steel reinforcement Minimum 90% steel width prevents longitudinal tears typical in fiber
pads
Provides lateral rigidity, to prevent extrusion from under the rail
Stiffens the pad under heavy wheel loads to reduce bending stress
in the rail

The GANTREX Mark 6 pad fulfills these requirements in the following manner:
1) It is manufactured from a synthetic elastomer especially resistant to wear, shear and crushing as well as oil,
grease, ozone, and ultra violet rays.
2) Its upper face is grooved in order to obtain a variable stiffness see Load-Deflection Curve Fig. 1. This
increases the pads resistance to wear without introducing excessive bending stresses in the rail, as
explained below:
the reduction of pad thickness under the wheel load does not result in pad elongation (bulging) in the
direction transverse to the rail as would be the case with a plain pad. Here the thickness reduction results
in the filling of the grooves. Thus, there is practically no relative movement between rail and pad, again
minimizing wear.
as the grooves fill, the vertical stiffness of the pad increases and the bending stresses in the rail due to the
wheel load increase more slowly.
3) It is reinforced with a high strength galvanized steel strip that is at least 90% of the width of the pad and fully
vulcanized to the rubber. The reinforcement acts as a diaphragm and gives the pad lateral stiffness,
preventing it from deflecting under the side thrust of the rail, regardless of wheel load and loss of friction
from oil or grease.
4) Edge seals on both the top and bottom surfaces prevent the ingress of dirt and water which can cause
premature failure of the pad, rail and support structure.
5) It is manufactured by an extrusion process which eliminates problems commonly experienced with a batch
molding process such as variations in durometer, risk of contamination, pad straightness and centering of
the reinforcing steel. It also allows the pad to be extruded in longer lengths.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The GANTREX MK 6 pad has been specially designed for the soft mounting of
crane rails. The main functions of the pad are to:
distribute the wheel load over a larger surface area - See Fig. 5
eliminate load concentrations and the resulting fatigue stresses - See Fig. 4
compensate for the uneven surface between the rail and its support
reduce impact, vibration and noise
eliminate fretting corrosion (wear) of the support surface under the rail.

INSTALLATION RECOMMENDATIONS
GANTREX reinforced pad is recommended for all installations, both indoors and out. For each installation,
GANTREX will recommend the type of pad which best meets the service conditions. For best results,
GANTREX clips should also be used to prevent lateral movement of the rail.
The upper surface of the supporting structure should be clean and free from oil, grease and any sharp or
abrasive particles that are likely to damage the pad.
The pad should be laid in continuous lengths on the support surface, with the grooved side up, the ends butted
tightly together and centered at a pair of rail clips. It should be cut as needed to ensure that a joint does not
coincide with a gap between adjacent girders. Where possible, the joint should be not less than 3 ft from the
end of the girder. The minimum length of pad should be not less than ten feet. It should be centered beneath
the rail flange so that it is completely covered.
When pad is used, a laterally locking rail clip, such as Stelcam, Weldlok, or 3000 Series, shall be used. (Ref:

GANTREX reinforced pad is recommended for all rail installations, both indoor and out. GANTREX can
recommend the pad best suited for a particular service condition. GANTREX rail clips should be used to prevent
lateral movement of the rail. Properly installed, they will ensure that the pad remains under the rail for optimum
performance.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
The upper surface of the supporting structure should be clean and free from oil, grease and any abrasive or
sharp particles that are likely to damage the pad.
The pad must be installed with the grooved side up.
Pad should be laid in continuous lengths on the support surface, with the ends butted tightly together.
Pad should be centered beneath the rail flange so that it is completely covered by the rail.
Pad joints should be at least 3 feet away from rail joints, adjacent girder joints or building expansion joints.
Pad is supplied in nominal 39-foot rolls. When using cut lengths of pad, care must be taken to ensure that the
cut piece is long enough to span at least four pairs of rail clips.
If the gap between adjacent girders or at expansion joints is greater than 3/4", pad stops are strongly
recommended. These should be 1/4" thick, U-shaped steel bars, welded at the ends of the girder.
Pad stops should also be considered at the ends of each runway where excessive longitudinal rail movement
relative to the girder or soleplate is expected. A typical detail is shown below.

The GANTREX crane rail soft-mounting system consists of a range of synthetic rubber pads, which are laid
under the rail, and a range of resilient crane rail clips that locate the rail.
Individual data sheets on the various GANTREX pads and clips give details of the unique characteristics and
geometry of each product.
This general specification describes the boltable Stelcam series clips.
Weldable clips are described in the Weldlok series general specification sheet.
Pads are described in the MK6 and the MK2 pad specifications.
Other clips are described in the 3000 & 7000 Series General Specifications sheets.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
All GANTREX Stelcam series patented clips are specifically designed for the mounting of crane rails, with or
without pad. A full range of bolt or stud-attached clips is available to the designer to optimize the economy as
well as the technical integrity of the installation.
All Stelcam clips consist of two interacting components that allow easy lateral rail adjustment and, once
correctly installed, are self-locking. A controlled vertical force is applied to the rail flange through a synthetic
rubber nose, which is vulcanize-bonded to the appropriate clip component. The true cam design ensures that
the force is transmitted to the fastener (bolt or stud) in the most efficient means possible and is completely
independent of friction.
All components are made from high-quality ductile cast iron (50,000 psi, minimum yield).

The GANTREX crane rail soft-mounting system consists of a range of synthetic rubber pads, which are laid
under the rail, and a range of resilient crane rail clips which locate the rail.
Individual data sheets on the various GANTREX pads and clips give details of the unique characteristics and
geometry of each product.
This general specification describes the weldable Weldlok series clips.
The boltable clips are described in the Stelcam series general specification sheet.
The rail pads are described in the MK6 pad specification.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
All GANTREX Weldlok series patented clips are specifically designed for the mounting of crane rails, with or
without pad. A full range of weldable clips is available to the designer to optimize the economy as well as the
technical integrity of the installation.
All Weldlok clips consist of two interacting components which allow easy lateral rail adjustment and, once
correctly installed, are self-locking and self-tightening. A controlled vertical force is applied to the rail flange
through a synthetic rubber nose, which is vulcanize-bonded (or mechanically fastened) to the appropriate clip
component.

CLIP IDENTIFICATION AND NUMBERING SYSTEM
The GANTREX Clip numbering system applies to most current products and concisely describes the product as
illustrated below:
TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES OF GANTREX CLIPS
Simple and positive lateral rail adjustment of up to 3/4 (20mm), depending on type of clip.
Self-locking and self-tightening features through a system of double wedging action.
Very high resistance to lateral loads through careful selection of clip component materials.
Controlled vertical force applied to rail through synthetic rubber nose:
- accommodates rail and girder tolerances
- eliminates fatigue effects on bolt
- ensures contact between rail and pad under the rail
- controls axial movement of broken rail
- eliminates loosening of bolts
Minimizes crane runway maintenance and down time.
Reduces noise and vibration.
STANDARD RANGE OF CLIPS
See data sheet on specific clip series for details. All GANTREX clips are available in various heights, with optional
nose thicknesses to accommodate all rail sizes with and without pad.

CLIP SELECTION
The following information must be available in order to select the correct GANTREX clip for your installation:
rail designation (e.g. 85 ASCE, 175 CR)
thickness of pad or wear plate under the rail
maximum side thrust per wheel
vertical clearance tolerances where side rollers are used
girder top flange width
lateral adjustment required
maximum wheel load
Please consult GANTREX if the girder is not simply supported.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
See data sheet on specific clip for details. A standard option on all GANTREX clips is protection against corrosion
in the form of electro or hot-dip galvanizing. The lower part which must be welded cannot be galvanized prior to
welding. Bolts shall be coated with zinc chromate. Where further painting is required, please consult GANTREX
before using mineral-based solvents. Do not use cleaning fluids or protective coatings which contain ketones or
similar chemicals, as they may seriously damage the rubber nose.
CLIP SPECIFICATION
The data sheet for each clip gives the following details:
clip size and weight
model designation for selected rail sizes
resistance to side load (R)
lateral adjustment range
Please contact GANTREX for more information on any GANTREX product or for clip specification if your rail size
does not appear in the tables on the data sheet tables.
GANTREX reserves the right to discontinue or change specifications at any time without prior notice and without incurring any obligation whatsoever.

SUGGESTED WELD
The lower component of the GANTREX Weldlok Series clip is welded to the support structure. The weld size on the
side facing the rail must not exceed 3/16. This will avoid any interference with the locating lug on the upper
component. Welds on the back and sides of the clip may be as large as required to accommodate the imposed side
thrust and to meet governing welding code requirements.
The following are welds suggested by GANTREX. The actual weld size (which is dictated by design thrust) and the
welding procedure should be specified by the designer.

The suggested weld is along the front of the clip and along the back: Weld X and Weld Y.
Completing the weld along both sides of the clip, Weld Z, brings the side thrust capacity to the value stated in the
table above.
WELDLOK 15 SERIES - The maximum side thrust capacity of 15,000* lbs can be obtained by increasing Weld Y &
Z to 3/8.
WELDLOK 18 SERIES - The maximum side thrust capacity of 18,000* lbs can be obtained by increasing Weld Y &
Z to 5/16.
WELDLOK 24 SERIES - The maximum side thrust capacity of 24,000* lbs can be obtained by increasing Weld Y &
Z to 3/8.
* Limited by the side thrust capacity of the clip.
NOTE: Side thrust capacities shown above are based on allowable weld stress of 15,000 psi for up to 100,000 full load
cycles. AISC requires a reduction for up to 500,000 cycles and a further reduction for up to 2,000,000 cycles.

A common area of failure with active crane runways is the crane girder to building column connection. The
Gantrex Tie-Back System is designed to provide a proven solution to this problem.
Spherical bearings allow girder end rotation, longitudinal and vertical movement without stressing the
tie-back linkage.
A single linkage can transmit up to a 165 kip side thrust in tension or compression.
Sizes are available to fit any girder and column configuration.
The tie-back linkage assembly eliminates diaphragms and the associated maintenance from cracking.
Designed to suit.

GIRDER TIE-BACKS FATIGUE ISSUES
Girders to Building Column Tie-Backs are Prone to Fatigue Failure. The main causes of fatigue are depicted
below:
1.0
Girder deflections of L/1000 or other chosen allowable bending limit between the support columns causes
top flange compression. This deflection results in girder end rotation in the (Z) direction.
2.0
Side thrust of the crane generated by trolley movement, crane skewing, and imperfect rail alignment cause
girder end rotation in the (Y) direction.
3.0
Vertical loading of the crane directly above the girder column support will cause compression of this support
relative to the building column in the (X) direction.
Dynamic loading on the crane girders results in eventual fatigue failure of standard tie-backs in the three
axes (X,Y,Z). A flexible bearing tie-back is called for to eliminate this recurring problem. Please refer to the
following standard mounting brackets and sizing sections while completing the application data sheet.

GIRDER TIE-BACK LINKAGE ASSEMBLIES
TIE-BACK ASSEMBLY MOUNTING BRACKETS
The most common tie-back assembly configurations are illustrated below. Assembly 1 includes shim plates
at the column face connection to compensate for variations in the distance between the girder and column.
Assemblies 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 can be designed for either bolting or welding to the column.
GANTREX can normally design and fabricate custom assemblies based on one of our standard illustrated
configurations. If none of these standard assembly configurations are practical, GANTREX will develop a
special assembly to meet your specific application.

INTRODUCTION
Modern, heavy-duty production cranes have increased in size and speed over recent years. The hydraulic bumper
was developed to transform the cranes impact or kinetic energy into heat. The device brings the crane to rest in a
controlled manner minimizing end forces. This has rendered simple mechanical devices such as springs or rubber
bumpers obsolete on all but the lightest crane applications.
Several codes and standards have evolved that specifically identify the criteria for safely decelerating a moving crane
or transfer vehicle. Among these are AISE, CMAA, OSHA, DIN, CEM, etc. There has been a rapid development of
hydraulic bumpers with capacities and stroke lengths to meet the demands of increasing crane weights and speeds.
The hydraulic bumper is the most economic and reliable method for limiting the forces transmitted during an impact.
Structural engineers can now confidently evaluate the forces from longitudinal impact and utilize the hydraulic bumper
to reduce overall structural steel costs in a building.
FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES
The hydraulic bumper is a hydro-pneumatic energy absorber that utilizes a tapered metering pin to create a truly
variable orifice. Infinitely small increments of stroke or compression yield controlled changes in orifice size to provide
an almost constant end force. Unlike conventional fluidic piston head designs, full stroke is accomplished at any
speed, thereby further reducing end force.
A compressed nitrogen return spring is internal and is fully maintenance free. Its fatigueless design is more reliable
than any mechanical spring system and offers a soft ride down. Toward the end of stroke, isothermal compression of
the nitrogen increases rapidly to offer an effective cushion instead of hard mechanical bottoming-out as with
competitive designs. The primary seal is an outwardly sprung steel ring and works exactly the same way piston rings
work in an internal combustion engine. The steel ring contains the high pressures and the elastomer seals are
exposed to only low return pressures.
Flexible mounting configurations include back flange, front flange and capsule mount to be used with a custom foot
mounting bracket. Special bumper heads are available in larger diameters or radiuses to reduce edge contact
stresses in rotary applications. Crane end approach can be optimized by using front flange mounting to minimize the
projected length on the end truck.
Oleo has provided 6-8 times more heavy duty hydraulic bumpers throughout the world than any other manufacturer.
This high volume coupled with a practical range of bumper sizes guarantees very accurate tolerances. The resulting
interchangeability of parts allows fast assembly and repairs from components stocked at our Pittsburgh assembly
plant.
Oleo International is an ISO 9001 company

OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The OIeo bumper is basically a large oil dashpot, incorporating a variable orifice, and the sectional illustration shows its
simple, heavy duty construction. Under impact, the plunger is forced into the cylinder displacing the oil through the orifice into
the plunger, moving the separator piston towards the bumper head and compressing the air (nitrogen). The bumper is re-
extended by the compressed air (nitrogen) acting through the separator piston onto the oil.
INDUSTRIAL BUMPER RANGE
WARRANTY
When the operating and design parameters of the application are provided to GANTREX engineers for bumper
selection or verification, a one year warranty is offered. This warranty covers materials and workmanship as well as
performance longevity of the bumper in the specific application. If the bumper should fail, GANTREX will repair ft or
replace it at no charge during the 1 year period from date of shipment. Contact GANTREX to find out how to qualify.

Kinetic Energy is associated with a body in motion. Newtons 1st Law of Motion states that a body will continue in motion
unless acted upon by a force. An Oleo Hydraulic Bumper will control the magnitude and duration of this force. Newtons 2nd
Law of Motion provides that the rate of change of motion is proportional to the force applied. An Oleo Hydraulic Bumper
ensures that the force applied is always the minimum required to produce the desired change in motion. Newtons 3rd Law of
Motion identifies that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. An Oleo Hydraulic Bumper controls the arresting
force and limits the reaction on the supporting structure. These principles are the foundation for understanding the benefits and
characteristics of a hydraulic energy absorber such as the Oleo Hydraulic Bumper.
KINETIC ENERGY
A body in motion, such as a crane, has kinetic energy that must be dissipated to bring it to rest. A hydraulic bumper produces
a resistive force over a displacement to dissipate the energy by converting work energy to thermal energy. The bumper forces
oil through a variable orifice to produce fluidic friction and therefore a resisting force.
The graph above on the right shows equal amounts of kinetic energy (represented by the area under the Force vs. Stroke
curve) being absorbed with different stroke lengths. As you can see, the more stroke, the lower the resistive force. This
resistive force is proportional to the rate of change of motion, or deceleration. Ultimately, the Oleo bumper governs the
magnitude of force transmitted to both the impacting body as well as the reaction force onto the support or fixed structure.
PROPELLING FORCES
In many applications, the body in motion is also being propelled. This propelling force is additive with the Kinetic Energy as it
acts through the displacement of the bumper. It is always important to determine whether or not the impacting body will be
propelled during the impact and to allow sufficient additional energy capacity. Not all design codes or references include
propelling forces, so it is the designers responsibility to determine when they should be considered.
BUMPER END FORCES AND THE DESIGNER
Oleo bumper end forces can be easily calculated and have been verified through extensive testing. For most applications, a
standard hydraulic bumper can be utilized to meet the requirements of typical safety codes. Often, the designer can select a
longer stroke bumper to further reduce the transmitted force generating a savings in the cost of structure and sometimes in the
machine itself. For applications with impacting speeds above 500 ft/min (2.5 m/sec) or special deceleration requirements,
please consult Gantrex for assistance.

STANDARD BRACKETS
Gantrex hydraulic bumpers are extremely versatile with respect to mounting options. As shown in the individual
bumper data sheets, standard mounting flanges for Front or Rear mounting are most typical. Bolt pattern
and hole sizes are clearly shown in the drawings provided. Each standard mounting flange has an additional
hole to allow safety wire to be looped back from the bumper to the crane or supporting structure. If these
standard configurations do not suit your requirements, we are able to provide custom designed brackets or
flanges upon request. These custom designs include boltable and weldable styles.
FOOT MOUNTING BRACKETS
The following charts show standard configurations of weldable foot mounting brackets. These designs can be
easily modified to match your requirements.

STORM BUMPER
Container cranes, gantry cranes and other rail mounted machines are often located in environments where the
danger from high winds or microbursts can cause serious safety problems. Sudden, high winds can propel a crane
along its runway until it impacts the end stops. Often the impact speed is considerably higher than the full load rated
travel speed of the crane. A storm bumper can offer protection for most container cranes at speeds up to 5 miles per
hour with limited bumper end force. Storm bumpers consist of one or more hydraulic bumpers mounted on the end
stops of the pier. A suitable striking surface on the crane leg or end truck engages the bumper.
Controlling impacts and reducing resultant damaging effects have historically been a problem in heavy crane
applications. OIeo hydraulic bumpers are efficient and effective energy absorbers that offer the following features:
Provide uniform deceleration and low end forces, with over 95% efficiency in energy absorption and
dissipation
Allow easy drive down for maximum end approach, through fatigueless gas spring return
Provide reliability and durability even in caustic or marine environments due to their heavy-duty, forged steel
construction
Are available in a full range of standard bumper sizes and configurations with energy capacity over
1,000,000 ft-lbs
Are warranted for one year

OPERATING PRINCIPLE
The Oleo bumper is basically a large oil dashpot,
incorporating a variable orifice, and the sectional
illustration shows its simple, heavy duty construction.
Under impact, the plunger is forced into the cylinder
displacing oil through the orifice into the plunger, moving
the separator piston towards the bumper head and
compressing the air (nitrogen) to a higher pressure. The
compressed air (nitrogen) acting through the separator
piston on to the oil forms the recoil spring to re-extend
the bumper plunger.

1,350,000 lbs
Impact Weight Per Corner can be greater than the above. Sometimes this can be as much as 60% of total crane
weight. In the Engineering Data table below, look in the Maximum Impact Weight Per Corner column, under the
desired speed, for the calculated Impact Weight Per Corner. In this example, we have 1,350,000 lbs and the Storm
Bumper Model SB-6 at 5 mph is rated for up to 1,392,952 lbs. Therefore, this is an acceptable solution. Now, we can
calculate the Kinetic Energy per corner as follows:
Kinetic Energy Per Corner at 5 mph
=
=
=
1/2 (Impact Weight / 32.2) x (Speed x 1.467)
2

Modern industrial applications where the bumper is installed primarily as an
emergency stop are the intended applications for the 110 series bumpers. These
devices bring the crane to a stop in a controlled manner. The long strokes minimize
end forces on the building as well as on the crane.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Upon impact, the plunger displaces oil through orifices in the metering tube, into
the reservoir. The size and position of these orifices can be varied to suit different
mass ranges. Plunger return is achieved by a gas spring recoil system. During
production, the gas spring is inflated with nitrogen gas and sealed for the life of the
bumper.
The bumper is designed with low static resistance. Under slow closure, the low
resistance allows the shock absorber plunger to be driven in, thus maximizing
runway approaches.
The shock absorbers can be supplied with options such as safety cables, bellows,
low and high temperature seals, marine plating for outdoor use, to suit a range of
requirements.
INSTALLATION METHODS
Standard mounting methods include front flange mounting, front foot with rear
flange and front and rear feet. The two smaller units can also be supplied with
standard rear flanges.
In addition, special brackets can be supplied, based on a customers needs,
allowing for all sizes to be converted to rear mount or any other special mounting
arrangement. These can be supplied fabricated and pre-assembled to the bumper.

INTRODUCTION
Medium and light duty maintenance and production cranes are often purchased
based on CMAA and OSHA codes. While it is always better practice to use
hydraulic bumpers on cranes, to allow maximum energy dissipation, in certain
cases, polyurethane bumpers can provide an economic and viable alternative.
These can be selected to meet the deceleration requirements specified by the
code and will provide years of service without maintenance or deterioration.
FEATURES AND ADVANTAGES
The shock-absorbing element of the Galvi bumper consists of a polyurethane resin
with a special micro-cellular structure, which provides excellent energy absorption
during impact. This element can be compressed to 25% of its free length to absorb
the energy with a resultant increase in diameter of only 40%.
The bumper can be mounted to the crane or end-stop structure by means of a stud
arrangement or a square rear flange with four bolt-holes. An internal steel chain is
provided in each bumper as a safety device, to prevent damage to surroundings or
injury to personnel in the event of a catastrophic impact.
The energy capacity of the bumpers varies with impact speed. The bumper will
absorb more energy at a higher speed with the same stroke. Gantrex recommends
that bumpers be selected based on a maximum deflection of 50% of its free
length. This will minimize end-force and still leave the bumper with an adequate
reserve to absorb additional energy.
The elastic element is made of an anti-aging material with resistance to
mechanical wear, oil, grease and gasoline. The structure is homogeneous and
self-extinguishing.

Cavotec Specimas

Based in Italy, Cavotec Specimas is the
Cavotec production centre of motorised
cable reels, slipring assemblies and
Panzerbelt cable protection systems, for
ports, marine, offshore and tunnelling
operations. The company started in
1963 with the development and
manufacture of an innovative cable
reeling system which soon captured the
interest of technicians in major ports
throughout Europe. The good customer
relationship which was established,
encouraged the company to broaden its
range of products in the field of power
equipment. One of the early successful
developments was the Panzerbelt
system illustrated in the following
pages. Today, more than 250
installations of Panzerbelt system are in
operation at ports and shipyards around
the world. It is a trouble-free, reliable
and smooth operation which adds years
to the life of the expensive cables.
Cavotec Specimas has today acquired
the reputation of being in the forefront
of its sector and the most innovative
cable reel manufacturer in the world.

THE PANZERBELT

CABLE PROTECTION SYSTEM

The Panzerbelt

Cable Protection System.

"Panzerbelt

" is a patented system

developed by Specimas in the mid-70s, with
the aim of giving an efficient and economic
protection to power cables against damages
and problems caused by the increasing cross
traffic in ports and terminals.

The more than 250 installations at work
today (2002) around the world, since the
first Panzerbelt

was put in operation back

in 1976 in the Port of Leghorn, Italy, prove
that the system is the right solution.

Panzerbelt

withstands cross traffic of all

vehicles normally used in ports without
permanent deformation. It prevents spillage
of any nature from entering into the channel.
It gives the highest degree of cable
protection without the need of maintenance.

In the following pages we give a detailed
description of the Panzerbelt

System.

Here we show some images of the
conventional cable protection systems -
flush steel plate covers - and a maintenance-
free Panzerbelt

installation.

THE PANZERBELT

CABLE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Panzerbelt

. A description of the system.

The background.

The traditional method of feeding electrical
power to quayside cranes through contact
rails has now virtually been superseded by
cable systems.
However it is still necessary to provide
protection for the cable from quay traffic
and safety regulations in many ports require
some form of housing. The simplest and
most economic method is to provide an
open duct, although this is a hazard to
pedestrians and can easily become clogged
by debris, possibly damaging the cable.
Another solution is to provide a raised cable
support, but this cannot be adopted where
traffic crosses the crane's path and therefore
has limited application.
A more sophisticated solution is to cover
the duct with hinged metal plates, as
frequently used in contact rail installations.
This system however, suffers from many
drawbacks since maintenance requirements
are considerable. Moreover, the complex
design of the plate lifting mechanism slows
transit speeds and can cause costly
downtime.
The solution.

Panzerbelt

is a cable protection system

incorporating a continuous semi-
flexible belt, fabricated from rubber
with inlaid steel reinforcement, which
lies over a channel cast in the quay. The
belt is riveted to the quay surface along
one edge, while the other remains free
to be raised by a cable guide and belt
lifting device fitted to the crane.
Steel reinforcement has been developed
to retain flexibility of the belt in all
directions, except transversely to the
channel axis, so that the cable once in
the channel, is totally protected from
vehicles crossing the track and from
objects falling into the cable duct. It is
also possible to convert a hinged plate
system both for conductor bars or cable
reel supply to this more flexible
covering system.
Panzerbelt

is the Cavotec
Specimas solution to a number of
problems concerning protection of
the electrical supply to mobile
equipment in environments such
as ports, shipyards and steel mills
which have an intense traffic of
haulage vehicles and heavy load
transport.
The Panzerbelt

System is easy to
install and guarantees long term,
trouble-free operation with no
need of maintenance.

Super Panzerbelt

As a result of development, trial
installations, and practical
experience in close cooperation with
its customers, Cavotec Specimas can
now offer two versions of the
Panzerbelt

System: Standard
Panzerbelt

and Super Panzerbelt

.

Standard Panzerbelt

is designed to
allow traffic of most vehicles used in
harbors, including container carriers
with small solid wheels such as Mafi
wagons.

Super Panzerbelt

offers an extra
advantage as it allows heavy vehicles
and fork-lift trucks not only to pass
over the belt, but also to have their
wheels turning on top of the belt.
This is a typical application for land
side installation with heavy traffic.

A number of reasons in favour of Panzerbelt

.

Panzerbelt

- a continuous flexible covering system for cable channels

and conductor bars trenches - gives numerous advantages to the user.

The 10 most important reasons are:
Total operational safety
Low installation cost
Full cable protection
Maintenance free
No load restrictions
Channel free from spillage
Operates under any climatic conditions
No crane speed limitations
No alignment problems
Easily adaptable to existing systems
Technical characteristics of the Panzerbelt

System.

The belt.

The most significant feature of the Panzerbelt

System is the
belt. Its manufacture, defined after several years of testing
and practical experience, allows it to perform conflicting
duties; as it must have a high transversal rigidity to support
all types of vehicles passing over, but it must also possess
sufficient longitudinal flexibility to allow the belt to be
lifted into the vertical position. In addition it is also
resistant to mechanical and abrasive wear thus minimising
maintenance costs. It is weather and corrosion resistant-
particularly in view of normal marine environment
conditions.

General characteristics of belt.
Ambient temperature: - 30C...+ 80C
Opening angle: 90 maximum
Estimated lifetime: > 250.000 cycles (open/close)

Panzerbelt

- a unique system.

The Panzerbelt

System is covered by
several patents and registration
certificates. Still, as it usually happens
with any innovative and successful
product, imitations have recently appeared
on the market. Here we can only say that
the wealth of technology and experience
put in the Panzerbelt

System cannot
easily be copied. Take for example the
belt, the most important component of the
Panzerbelt

cable protection system. It

consists of 13 layers of different materials,
including a double layer of steel and
textile cord, vulcanized together at very
high temperature and pressure.

The double layer of steel cord makes the
belt rigid in the transversal direction, and
flexible in the longitudinal direction. This
is of fundamental importance for the
trouble-free operation of the system. The
pictures below show an original
Panzerbelt

installation followed by the

installation of a belt imitation.

The picture proves the difference between the original
Panzerbelt

and a belt imitation which shows early

signs of severe belt deterioration.

Cable Reels to Panzerbelt

.

The Panzerbelt system described in this
catalogue is a vital component of the cable
management program developed by
Specimas since 1963. Cable Reels
manufactured by Cavotec Specimas are
today at work in a number of ports,
terminals, mines, tunnels and industries all
over the world. The range of Cavotec
Specimas motorised cable reels has been
enlarged to cover almost any application
and requirement. Here we give some basic
information about the Cavotec Specimas
cable reels. A specific publication on the
cable reels technology is available on
request.

Motorised cable reels are mainly divided
in applications for Horizontal and
Vertical Reeling, and a distinction is
made for Intermittent Duty or Continuous
Duty applications.
For Intermittent Duty applications
Cavotec Specimas normally uses the
Hydrodynamic System, which is
particularly suitable for these applications
due to its simplicity and high reliability.
Compact design, even torque output in
reeling and unreeling mode, standard
motor and low maintenance are some of
the features of this system. More than
50.000 units have been produced by
Cavotec Specimas in almost 40 years.

CABLE PROTECTION SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION
A Gantrex Anchor Bolt is a resin set anchor. It is installed by drilling a hole in the concrete deck, filling the hole
with polyester resin, which acts as an adhesive, suspending a bolt in the resin and allowing the resin to cure, to
complete the process. Unlike anchors using epoxy based resin, Gantrex anchors can be placed in temperatures as
low as 10F.
The bolt itself is an all-thread steel rod, complete with a nut and a washer. Bolts can be supplied in different
diameters and lengths. The polyester-based resin supplied in US quart cans, can be poured directly from the
container, into the hole.

PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
Holes are air-drilled in concrete deck, using a soleplate as template. The drilled holes are 1/8 greater in
diameter, than the anchor bolt diameter. These holes are cleaned to remove dust and debris.
One container of catalyst is added to one can of polyester resin and mixed in the can for 60 seconds to 90
seconds. The mixture is poured into the hole, to about one third the depth. The anchor bolt is suspended from the
soleplate, and placed in the resin in the hole. The resin cures and sets in about 1 hour. The anchor must not be
disturbed during this time. Full cure occurs in 24 hours.
SUGGESTED EMBEDMENT
It is important that anchor bolts are embedded to a proper depth to achieve adequate strength. In 5 ksi concrete,
for example, we suggest that A36 anchor bolts be embedded to at least 8 times their diameter (a 3/4 rod will
require an embedded length of at least 6). This is adequate to achieve enough bond with the concrete such that, in
a pullout test, the anchor bolt will yield before the bond with the concrete. Similarly, the suggested embedment for
B7 bolts is 12 times the bolt diameter.

NOTES:
1) Replace A-36 with B7 for high strength material.
2) Suffix with Z for Zinc plated or G for hot dipped galvanized.
3) Rod assembly consists of one rod + 1 nut + 1 washer.
4) Resin volume shown includes 50% for waste.
HOW TO SPECIFY AND ORDER
1. To specify and order a Gantrex adhesive anchor bolt assembly, determine the correct diameter and
length.
2. Determine correct part number from the above table and notes. For example, AB 1x14-A36G would
be the part number for a 1 x 14 long, diameter bolt of A36 material, with one nut and one washer,
all hot dipped galvanized.
3. If substrate temperature is likely to be below 45F, at time of actual installation, please double the
quantity of catalyst, at time of order placement.
While the steel hardware can be shipped at any time, due to the nature of the resin/catalyst
system, it is recommended that the adhesive be shipped 3-4 weeks prior to actual installation.
GANTREX reserves the right to discontinue or change specifications at any time without prior notice and without incurring
any obligation whatsoever.

GANTREX, 2003
PRINTED IN U.S.A.
Rev. 11/03
TOLL FREE: 800 2 GANTREX (800) 242-6873
DESCRIPTION:
GANTREX Epoxy Grout is a self-leveling, readily pourable, 100% solids epoxy grout consisting of
epoxy resin, hardener and carefully graded aggregate.
ADVANTAGES:
High early strengths
Aggregate content can be field-modified
Low resin crystallization temperature
Excellent flow characteristics
Possible to clean tools/equipment with water/soap solution, prior to set
Available in economic 3 cubic foot units for high volume applications
User friendly packaging
APPLICATIONS:
GANTREX Epoxy Grout may be used where a pourable, non-shrink, chemical-resistant, high-
strength grout is required. Typical applications include ports, shipyards, crushers, pulp and paper
machinery, compressors and refinery equipment.
SURFACE PREPARATION AND FORMING:
All concrete surfaces must be sound, dry, free of all oil, dirt, grease, laitance and other foreign
matter. Prepare the surface to be grouted by mechanical means to remove all contaminants and
weak surface material. All surfaces should be dry prior to grouting. Wood or metal forms may be
used. Forms must be leak free. The contact surfaces of the forms should be coated with two coats of
common paste wax to prevent bonding. Exercise care to ensure that the paste wax does not
contaminate any surface that requires bonding. Control joints vary by application - consult your
GANTREX representative.
MIXING AND PLACING:
Condition all grout components to 70F (21C), prior to mixing.

For the 1cf unit (28.3 liter), add the hardener (Part "B") to the base resin (Part "A"). Mix the
combined resin and hardener using a low speed paddle mixer for two to three minutes. Pour the
thoroughly mixed resin and hardener into a clean mortar mixer and add the aggregate while it is in
motion. Mix for approximately one additional minute ensuring that all the aggregate is thoroughly
wetted. When using a mortar mixer, mix three 1 cf units at the same time. For quantities less than
three cubic feet, use a galvanized 25 gallon, flat bottomed can or pail.
K3 Epoxy Grout
- 1 -
MIXING AND PLACING (contd):
For the 3cf unit (84.9 liter), place the resin (Part "A") into a clean mortar mixer and add the
hardener (Part "B"), while the mixer is in motion. Mix for two to three minutes. Add the aggregate
while the mixer is in motion. Mix for approximately two additional minutes ensuring that all the
aggregate is thoroughly wetted. Do not over-mix.
All grout should be placed within 30 minutes.

It is important that grout be poured only from one side of the soleplate (or base plate) to avoid air
entrapment under the plate. If for any reason this is not possible, please consult GANTREX for air
relief hole locations.
Consult your GANTREX representative when either a plastic mix or a high flow mix is required. (Do
not alter the mix proportions without consulting GANTREX)
PRECAUTIONS:
Gantrex epoxy grout must be placed on dry surfaces only.
Avoid exposure to water for 24 hrs after placement.
Do not reduce the aggregate content without consulting Gantrex.
The minimum temperature required for curing Epoxy Grout is 50F (10C). For pours at
temperatures lower than 50F or higher than 105F (40C) and/or depths greater than 4" (100mm),
please consult GANTREX.
CLEAN UP:
Clean all tools, equipment and spills with a water/soap solution, prior to set. Dispose of all containers
and packaging in accordance with local rules and regulations. For mortar mixer clean up, please
consult GANTREX.
SHELF LIFE:
Shelf life of GANTREX Epoxy Grout is 2 years if liquid containers are hermetically sealed and stored
in normal heated warehouse conditions.
CAUTION:
In case of skin contact, scrub affected area thoroughly with soap and water. In case of eye contact,
flush with water for 15 minutes and immediately consult your local physician. Use eye goggles and
rubber gloves while working with epoxy grout. Avoid inhaling fumes. Provide adequate ventilation.

APPLICATION SURFACE PREPARATION:
All surfaces that will be in contact with the grout must be clean and free of grease, oil standing water,
laitance, loose material or any other contaminant that could impair substrate bond. Prior to grouting,
foundation concrete should be roughened, cleaned and thoroughly wetted down for 12 hours. Free
standing water should be blown clear just prior to grouting using oil free compressed air.
Forms must be rigid and water tight. Construct them with sides one to two inches above the base
plate allowing a head of grout to flow to the proper level. Vent high points to permit the escape of
entrapped air. Grout must be placed from one side only and allowed to flow to opposite form. Use only
a minimum amount of water, consistent with flowability required. Do not exceed 1.06 gal of water per
25kg bag of grout (4.0L 25kg. bag). Mix thoroughly and place within an hour of mixing. Keep grout
agitated in mixer at all times. As the grout sets, cure exposed surfaces with Gantrex Acrylic Cure &
Seal or damp burlap.
Ideal grouting temperature is 50 77 F (10 C to 25 C)
Cooler temperatures will retard the rate of strength gain in all mixes. Keep surrounding concrete and
contact steel above 40 F (4.5 C) for at least 72 hours after completion of grout pour.
MIXING AND PLACING:
Gantrex Non-Shrink grout may be pumped or poured in place. In all cases, no foreign materials are to
be added without first contacting your Gantrex technical representative. The following is to be used as
a guide.
Always use the minimum water required. Flowable 1.06 U.S. gal / 55lb. (4.0L/25kg.).
