Chapelle des Seigneurs ducs Vincenzo et Francesco de Mantoue, se recommande en premier lieu ;

avoir t enferm plusieurs mois.

On avait recours

house in Cremona. Baldassare Monteverdi, a doctor by profession, was worried by his sons poor
physical and mental condition. He sent Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga a letter asking him to release
Claudio from Mantuan service, but this remained unanswered. A second letter, to the duchess,
sheds light on his sons miserable condition: As soon as the most solemn festivities in Mantua were
ended, my son Claudio Monteverdi came to Cremona seriously ill, with debts, shabbily dressed and
without the salary of Signora Claudia, with two poor little sons thus left in his care by her death,
having nothing but the usual 20 scudi per month, all of which I consider as having been caused by
the Mantuan air,1 which by its nature is harmful, and by the bad fortune which has persecuted him
for the nineteen years during which he has been in the service of the Most Serene Lord Duke of
Mantua. In the past few days, I resolved to write to His Most Serene Highness on bended knee
that for the love of God he should grant him a dismissal with good grace, for it is certain that if he
returns to Mantua under those heavy duties and the air, his life will soon end, and responsibility
for those poor children will then rest on my shoulders, which are most weak because of age and
expense.... But this request was refused, and the duke ordered Monteverdi to return to court
forthwith. On 2 December 1608 he drew up a second request to be relieved of his duties, in which
he wrote: I have a frightful pain in my head and so terrible and violent an itching around my
waist,2 that neither by cauteries, which I have applied to myself, nor purges taken orally, nor by
blood-letting and other potent remedies, has it so far been possible to get even partly better. My
father, a physician, attributes the cause of the headache to mental strain, and the itching to Mantuas
climate, which does not agree with me, and he fears that the air alone could be the death of me
before long. However, no heed was paid either to Monteverdis accounts of his poor health or to
his complaints about the unworthy treatment he had received and the payments that were years
overdue, and his second appeal to be released from employment in Mantua was peremptorily
refused. So he had no alternative but to obey the dukes command and return to his duties at the
Mantuan court.
But he was still doing his best to transform his life.

with the Venetian Republic, which had recently enacted a law forbidding the sale of property to the
Church: his reaction was to excommunicate the Venetian Senate. During his papacy Paul V had the
Villa Borghese built and financed the faade of St Peters Basilica, as well as creating in 1605 the first
bank of the Papal States, the Banco di Spirito Santo.4 He maintained close ties with the Gonzagas
and had already visited the Mantuan court in 1607.
In October 1610 Monteverdi spent a few days in Rome. Normally travelling court musicians would
be lodged either at the court of a friendly prince or in a cardinals palace, but on this occasion he
preferred to journey incognito, on his own account and not as an employee of the Gonzagas, and
to stay at an inn. The purpose of his trip was, on the one hand, to petition for a job in Rome with
the aid of the dedication of the Vespro della beata Vergine to Pope Paul V, and on the other to seek
financial support for the education of his nine-year-old son Francesco, whom he wished to place in
the Seminario Romano.
He failed on both counts, and made his way back to Mantua.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away
Magnificat
Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, Monteverdis employer in Mantua since 1590, died on 18 February 1612.
His less musically inclined successor Francesco dismissed Claudio Monteverdi and his brother
Giulio Cesare from Gonzaga service as an economy measure an event which may be seen in
retrospect as the most fortunate in Monteverdis career. The immediate result, though, was that
he found himself without permanent employment and moved back in with his father in Cremona.
Giulio Cesare Martinengo, maestro di cappella of St Marks in Venice, died on 10 July 1613 and
Monteverdi applied to succeed him in the post. He submitted a compositione sacra for his audition
on 19 August 1613. A document dated that day relates: The Most Illustrious Lord Procurators
wishing to arrive at the appointment of a maestro di capella of the Church of St Mark in place of
the reverend maestro Giulio Cesare Martinengo... having understood... that the person of the most
25
worthy Claudio Monteverdi, formerly maestro di cappella of the Lord Duke Vincenzo and Duke
Francesco of Mantua, is commended as a most outstanding individual, the Procurators are further
confirmed in this opinion of his quality and worth both by his published works and by those
which today they have sought to hear, to their complete satisfaction, in the Church of St Mark
with its musicians. Monteverdi was immediately selected by unanimous decision. His undisputed
success is confirmed by the fact that the procurators did not wait to audition any further
candidates, and gave him a generous starting salary of 300 ducats as compared to the customary
salary of 200 ducats a significant financial token of their esteem for his talent.
The source does not mention which previously published piece Monteverdi submitted before his
audition or performed on the day in question, but since the 1610 print of his Missa In illo tempore
coupled with the Vespro della Beata Vergine was his most recent publication of sacred works it is
reasonable to suppose that the Vespro may be connected with his successful candidacy for St Marks
and helped him achieve the unanimous vote.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and hath exalted the humble and meek
Magnificat
On 22 December 1612 Ferdinando Gonzaga died aged just twenty-six only a few months after
the death of his predecessor Vincenzo. His two younger brothers and potential heirs were both
cardinals. They were prompted to leave holy orders and take steps to marry in order to secure the
Gonzaga succession, but the two brothers various marital vicissitudes produced no children. The
younger of the two, Vincenzo II, tried to bring Monteverdi back to Mantua, but without success.
Shortly after Monteverdis curt refusal of the Mantuan offer, his son Massimiliano, who still lived
in Mantua where he practised as a doctor, was accused of possession of a prohibited book of
medicine and imprisoned by the Inquisition. Fortunately, Massimiliano Monteverdi was released
after a few months detention on payment of bail.
Vincenzo II, the last of the Gonzagas, died in 1627 at the age of thirty-three. Since he had no heir,
26
distant relatives from France claimed the Mantuan estates. Spain and the Habsburgs became
involved, in an attempt to secure supremacy in north Italy, and the result was a bitter war of
succession centring on Mantua. Four years of sieges cut off the citys supply lines and oppressed the
innocent inhabitants. Pillage and the slaughter of a large part of the population made life in Mantua
unbearable, and the catastrophic conditions of hygiene led in 1631 to an outbreak of plague, which
subsequently raged all over north Italy, spreading as far as Venice and carrying off more than
700,000 people. Mantua was sacked by a troop of Habsburg Landsknechts; one of the consequences
of this was that many works by Monteverdi which were held in the Gonzaga library were
destroyed by fire.
After suffering a serious illness, Monteverdi was consecrated priest in 1632. He certainly chose to
enter the priesthood from inner conviction, but quite apart from the fact that all maestri di cappella
at St Marks were supposed to be in holy orders (and it is astonishing that Monteverdi had not
already been compelled to enter them when he took up his post), this step may also be viewed as a
final break with the devastated Mantuan court and as an emancipatory gesture. Becoming a priest
also signified elevation to a higher status and the right to a statutory pension, and hence freedom
at last from the whims and financial problems of secular employers.
Unlike the Mantuan dukes, his new employers in Venice did not impose a contract of exclusivity.
As a result Monteverdi was able, alongside his interesting and fulfilling activities at St Marks, to
compose secular works for princely houses in Italy and elsewhere in Europe and operas for the
newly opened public opera houses of Venice. He could organise his creative output as he wished
and had by this time become one of the most internationally famed composers of his time,
honoured and imitated in Italy and all over Europe. Monteverdi allowed himself a little touch of
artistic revenge in his last opera Lincoronazione di Poppea, in which all the characters at court
even the supposedly good ones are without exception murderous, power-hungry and corrupt.
27
There can be little doubt that the Vespro della Beata Vergine has been performed far more
frequently in the past sixty years than it ever was during Monteverdis lifetime. There exist
numerous speculations and studies by todays musicologists and practising musicians about possible
performance venues in Monteverdis time, but we have no precise contemporary information about
the singers and instrumentalists who performed the work; nor can the venues where it was sung
be identified with any certainty. In interpreting the work today we need to free ourselves from the
sound-world of earlier interpretations, while at the same time we can only cautiously grope our way
towards Monteverdis ideal sound, which still seems difficult to apprehend from the heterogeneous
and incomplete data available to us.
Even the title and the dedication of the 1610 print are less than clear with respect to the kind of
sound the composer had in mind and leave room for a range of conjectures. On the title page of the
partbooks we read: To the Most Holy Virgin: Mass in six voices for church choirs, and Vespers to
be sung in several voices, with a number of sacred concertos, suitable for the chapel or the chamber
of princes.6 The bassus generalis partbook gives at the Domine ad adjuvandum the title generally
used today: Vespers of the Blessed Virgin in concerto style, composed on cantus firmi. 7 We may
suspect that the first title page reflects a marketing strategy on the part of the publisher. First of all,
the emphasis is laid on the lesser complement of six voices (rather than the ten voices required by
certain pieces). For good measure, it is stated that the movements scored for smaller forces 8 can also
be performed in princely chambers, that is to say divorced from liturgical occasions, thus suggesting
that the work is not necessarily to be given as a complete entity. The virtuoso instruments are not
mentioned at all on the title page. Furthermore, Monteverdi provides for the possibility of simplified performance in the print: he himself specifies that if virtuoso cornetts, violins or trombones
are lacking, the Dixit Dominus may also be executed without instruments.9 The 1610 print contains
two different versions of the Magnificat: a first one with extremely elaborate instrumental parts,
and a considerably simpler second setting of the same text entirely without instruments.
28
But does the title page really tell us anything about Monteverdis ideal sound or his own ideal
conception of a possible performance? Could the title page have been drafted by his publisher with
a view to selling the music even to venues which had neither the necessary resources for a performance of the work with its full forces, nor the know-how required to execute this virtuoso music?
Was separate performance of the individual pieces the composers intention or simply a sales
strategy? Was Monteverdi himself ever able to enjoy the pleasure of directing a performance of his
masterpiece with his own ideal forces?
In the face of all these theoretical speculations, one can only assert an artistic sensibility, and admire
the indisputable beauty that emanates from both the individual pieces and the construction of the
work as a whole. The variet obtained by the use of the most varied compositional techniques
generates an irresistible arc of tension yet each individual movement is also a miniature masterpiece which fits perfectly into the whole.
Since Monteverdi dedicated the 1610 edition to Pope Paul V, a conservative advocate of the
Counter-Reformation and the prescriptions of the Council of Trent, one might at first suppose
that the sound he had in mind corresponded to a strict liturgical performance with antiphons, a
complement of exclusively male voices,10 and a basso continuo played only by organ.11 However,
the fact that the title of the print also suggests performance in princely chambers contradicts this
initial impression and implies a quite different sound: virtuoso female vocal soloists had been
present at the Mantuan court since 1600, and plucked instruments and other tone-colours were
a standard part of the continuo lineup. Antiphons were of course in use only during the liturgy
and were generally sung not by the professional singers but only by the priest himself; hence they
did not need to be not marked in the score. It does not appear to have been the practice to use
antiphons in concert performances.
We have opted in our interpretation for a concert version, which seemed to us more judicious
in the context of a modern recording, and therefore against the insertion of antiphons. The use of
exclusively soloistic forces with virtuoso singers and musicians allows one to choose faster tempos,
29
which above all in the pieces composed on a cantus firmus must not thrust the cantus firmus
as such into the foreground, but give greater importance to Monteverdis virtuosic inventioni on
that basic theme. The cantus firmus must be able to generate its own musicality and line through
the choice of rapid tempos while at the same time permitting concertante virtuosity in the other
vocal and instrumental parts.

1. A prospect of Mantua dating from 1575, showing the citys distinctive position between the artificial lakes
fed by the river Mincio, helps us to understand Monteverdis complaints about its unhealthy climate, with damp,
cold winters and stifling summers.
2. Perhaps the symptoms he describes could be interpreted as severe migraines due to burnout coupled with
shingles.
3. Research has suggested the following as possible dates for the first performance: 29 July 1609, commissioned
to mark the birth of Vincenzo Gonzagas daughter Maria, followed by performance on the Marian festivals of
15 August 1609 or 8 September 1609 (Pierre Tagmann); 25 May 1608 at San Andrea in Mantua, excerpts given
