(Enrico savanza fieramente accigliato, Raimondo lo segue
mesto e silenzioso. Breve pausa)

of the vast ruins of the tower.

In the foreground, the so called Siren fountain,
The other side of the fountain was once covered with a pretty

Caduto n il tetto, rovinate le mura,
e la sorgente che zampilla si apre il varco
fra le pietre, e le macerie postele intorno,

LUCIA
(Viene dal castello, seguita da Alisa: sono entrambe nella
massima agitazione. Ella si volge dintorno, come in cerca
di qualcuno; ma osservando la fontana, ritorce altrove lo
sguardo.)

ALISA
Incauta!... a che mi traggi!...
Avventurarti, or che il fratel qui venne,
folle ardir.
LUCIA
Ben parli! Edgardo sappia
Qual ne minaccia orribile periglio...
ALISA
Perch dintorno il ciglio

LUCIA
Quella fonte mai

Col trafisse: linfelice cadde
Nellonda, ed ivi rimanea sepolta...

edifice decorated with gothic friezes, .Only the debris of this

edifice surrounds it. The roof is fallen in and the walls
destroyed, and the fount, which jets up, makes its way
through the stones, and the debris around it forming a
stream - it is just getting dark. The moon is rising.

LUCIA

Son tuo sposo.
Ne tempi a cui rimonta questo avvenimento, fu in Iscozia
comune credenza, che il violatore di un giuramento fatto
con certe cerimonie, soggiacesse in questa terra ad
unesemplare punizione celeste, quasi contemporanea
allatto dello spergiuro. Perci allora i giuramenti degli
amanti, lungi dal riguardarsi come cosa di lieve peso,
avevano per lo meno limportanza di un contratto di nozze.
La pi usitata di queste cerimonie era, che i due amanti
rompevano, e si partivano una moneta. Si sostituito il
cambio dellanello, come pi adatto alla scena.

I am your spouse.
In the times in which this event takes place, there was in
Scotland a common belief that the breaker of an oath made
with certain ceremonies will be made an example of by
Heaven while on earth, almost like the law of perjury. For
this reason, then the oaths of the lovers, far from being
regarded as trivial, have at least as much importance as a
marriage contract. The most common of these ceremonies
was that the two lovers should break and divide a coin
between them. This is in place of a ring, as is more
adaptable to the stage.

Salone terreno nella torre di Wolferag, adiacente al
vestibulo. Una tavola spoglia di ogni ornamento, e un
vecchio seggiolone ne formano tutto larredamento. Vi nel
fondo una porta che mette allesterno:essa fiancheggiata
da due finestroni che avendo infrante le invetriate, lasciano
scorgere gran parte delle rovine di detta torre, ed un lato
della medesima sporgente sul mare.
notte: il luogo viene debolmente illuminato da una smorta
lampada. Il cielo orrendamente nero; lampeggia, tuona, ed
i sibili del vento si mescono coi scrosci della pioggia.
(Edgardo seduto presso la tavola, immerso ne suoi
malinconici pensieri; dopo qualche istante si scuote, e
guardando attraverso delle finestre)

Scene 1
A ground floor room near Wolferag castle, next to a hall. A
table, bare of all ornament and an large old chair form all
the furnishings. At the back is a door that leads to the
exterior. It is flanked by two windows which, having broken
panes, allow one to glimpse most of the ruins of the
aforementioned castle, and one side of the same leaning over
the sea.
It is night. The place is feebly lit by a dim lamp The sky is
horribly black; thunder, lightening and the howling wind
mingle with the falling of rain.
Edgardo is seated near the table immersed in his melancholy
thoughts, after a few moments he shakes himself and looking
through the windows:
