1 I sostantivi
sostantivo maschile o femminile:
She’s our new teacher.
È la nostra nuova insegnante.
This is my cousin. His name is Luca.
He’s a student. She’s a student.

Maschile Femminile
father padre mother madre
son figlio daughter figlia
brother fratello sister sorella
grandfather nonno grandmother nonna
uncle zio aunt zia
nephew nipote niece nipote
husband marito wife moglie

singolare plurale
ruler rulers
budgie budgies budgie budgies

singolare plurale
bus buses
boss bosses
watch watches
dish dishes
box boxes
quiz quizzes
tomato tomatoes
bus buses
6 six

1
Watch out!
radio radios photo photos kilo kilos
stereo stereos euro euros kangaroo kangaroos
video videos piano pianos

• I sostantivi che terminano per -y preceduta da consonante trasformano la -y in -i e aggiungono -es:

singolare plurale
city cities
pony ponies

comuni: chief – chiefs, cliff – cliffs.

singolare plurale singolare plurale
man men foot feet
woman women tooth teeth
child children mouse mice
person people

• Alcuni sostantivi invece non cambiano forma:

singolare plurale
fish fish
sheep sheep mouse mice

Sostantivi numerabili e non numerabili

There are three pumpkins. There’s some sugar.

I’ve got two cats.
Ho un gatto. Ho due gatti.
There’s an egg in the fridge. There are six eggs in the fridge.
C’è un uovo nel frigo. Ci sono sei uova nel frigo.

1 I sostantivi

Have we got some flour for the cake? Have we got some flours for the cake?
I’ve got some water. Ho un po’ d’acqua.
I’ve got two bottles of water.

bottle bottiglia cup tazza
glass bicchiere box scatola
can lattina jar vasetto
packet pacchetto slice fetta
carton cartone bar barretta
bowl scodella

Let’s have a glass of orange juice. Beviamo un bicchiere di succo d’arancia.

Your cups of coffee are on the table.
We need two slices of cheese for the sandwich.
Can I have a can of coke? Posso avere una lattina di cola?
Where are my bars of chocolate? Dove sono le mie barrette di cioccolato?
Where is the jar of marmalade? Dove è il vasetto di marmellata?

2 Gli articoli
Gli articoli indeterminativi

It’s a watch. It’s an apple.

an artist an hour
John’s a doctor. John è un dottore / fa il dottore.

L’articolo determinativo

Compare
L’articolo the non si usa con:
– i nomi dei pasti: Lunch is at one o’clock.
Il pranzo è all’una.
– i giorni della settimana, i mesi e le ore: Our dance class is on Friday at five.

3 Gli aggettivi
Gli aggettivi qualificativi
• Come dice il nome, gli aggettivi qualificativi
‘qualificano’ il sostantivo cui si riferiscono, vale
a dire forniscono delle informazioni in più.

• In inglese di solito gli aggettivi precedono

il sostantivo:
A good doctor
Un bravo dottore / Un dottore bravo

• Come in italiano, se l’aggettivo ha funzione

di predicato segue il verbo to be:
This T-shirt is small.
Tabitha’s a quiet cat, but Hannibal’s a nervous dog!

A big new square plastic box

An old black British hat

Watch out!
A small, new German car. Una nuova piccola macchina tedesca.
• Solo i colori vanno uniti da and:
A black and white horse. Un cavallo bianco e nero.
A green, yellow and red jumper. Un maglioncino verde, giallo e rosso.

4 I possessivi
Gli aggettivi possessivi

Is it your bike? Aggettivi possessivi

my (il mio, la mia, i miei, le mie)
your (il tuo, la tua, i tuoi, le tue)
his (il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue) – di lui
her (il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue) – di lei
its (il suo, la sua, i suoi, le sue) – di esso
our (il nostro, la nostra, i nostri, le nostre)
your (il vostro, la vostra, i vostri, le vostre)
No it isn’t. My their (il loro, la loro, i loro, le loro)
bike is white.

It’s my book. È il mio libro.
It’s my pencil. È la mia matita.
They’re my books. Sono i miei libri.
They’re my pencils.

terza persona singolare:
This is Tom. Sandra is his sister.
Questo è Tom. Sandra è sua sorella. (la sorella di lui)
This is Sandra. Her brother is Tom.

Look at the giraffe! Its legs are really long!
Guarda quella giraffa! Le sue gambe sono lunghissime!

Watch out!
Attenzione a non confondere its (aggettivo possessivo) con it’s (che può corrispondere a it is o it has got):
Look at that rabbit: its ears are really long!
Look at that rabbit: it’s got really long ears!
Look at that rabbit: it’s really big! Guarda quel coniglio: è veramente grosso!

Compare
A differenza dell’italiano, in inglese l’aggettivo possessivo non è mai preceduto dall’articolo:
our friend il nostro amico

seguendo questa struttura: That’s Paul’s
possessore + ’s + cosa posseduta skateboard.
That’s Paul’s skateboard.

Mark is Ian and Kelly’s father.

That’s Chris’s house.

Here’s my parents’ car. Ecco la macchina dei miei genitori.

Watch out!
It’s the children’s toy.

‘Whose iPod is it?’ ‘It’s Mick’s (iPod).’ ‘Di chi è l’ iPod?’ ‘È di Mick.’

Watch out!
Non confondere la ’s per esprimere possesso con la terza persona singolare dei verbi to be e to have:
The teacher’s bag. La borsa dell’insegnante.
The teacher’s English. L’insegnante è inglese.
The teacher’s got a car. L’insegnante ha una macchina.

4 I possessivi

• Il pronome possessivo sostituisce l’aggettivo possessivo e il sostantivo:

‘No, it isn’t. My bike is white.’
‘Is it your bike?’ ‘No, it isn’t. Mine (= My bike) is white.’

That’s Sheila’s bike. It’s hers. Quella è la bici di Sheila. È sua (di lei).
That’s Ted’s car. It’s his. Quella è la macchina di Ted. È sua (di lui).

• His e its hanno la stessa forma come aggettivi e come pronomi possessivi.

I pronomi personali soggetto

Inglese Italiano
I io
you tu
he egli
she ella
it esso/a
She’s my mother
we noi
and they’re my twin
you voi brothers.
they essi/e, loro

Compare
A differenza dell’italiano, in inglese il soggetto va sempre espresso:
They’re Spanish.

John and I are thirteen years old. John ed io abbiamo tredici anni.

Compare
i casi you:
You’re welcome, Mr Smith. Lei è il benvenuto, Sig. Smith.

significato neutro:
Dave and George are Scottish. They’re from Glasgow. Dave e George sono scozzesi. Sono di Glasgow.
Alison and Molly are from Cardiff. They’re Welsh. Alison e Molly sono di Cardiff. Sono gallesi.

Watch out!
Gli animali domestici sono di solito considerati parte della famiglia, quindi si usano i pronomi he / she
e non it:
This is our dog, Alfie. He’s so cute. Questo è il nostro cane, Alfie. È così simpatico!
