L’interesse per lo spettro della coscienza, in Emilio
Servadio, aveva preceduto quello per la
psicoanalisi. Anzi, Servadio aveva iniziato ad
occuparsi della disciplina creata da Freud proprio
per avere a disposizione la possibilita di interpretare
razionalmente quegli accadimenti psichici che,
altrimenti, avrebbero continuato ad essere territorio
di frequentazione per la magia e per l’occultismo.
Servadio si era sempre dichiarato attratto dalle
modicazioni della coscienza ordinaria, fossero
quelle modicate dal sogno, dall’ipnosi, dalla
trance, dalle pratiche yogiche o dall’assunzione di
LSD. In questa prospettiva e da considerare anche
il suo interesse per lo studio dei fenomeni
paranonnali. In ognuno di questi loni,
Servadio individuava un tassello di quell’ampio
mosaico che é la coscienza umana: non e possibile
ignorare uno di essi, se non a discapito
dell’immagine complessiva che ne possiarno

associated with him, to commemorate him

devoted to the modied states of consciousness.
For Emilio Servadio the interest in the spectre of
consciousness had preceded the interest in
psychoanalysis. In fact, Servadio had begun to
be concerned with the discipline created by
Freud just to have the opportunity of rationally
interpreter those psychic occurrences which
otherwise would go on being a frequenting
territory for magic and occultism.
Servadio had always declared that he was
attracted by the modications of ordinary
consciousness, independently of whether they
were caused by dream, hypnosis, trance, yoga
practices or by L.S.D. Also his interest in the
study of paranormal phenomena is to be
considered in this perspective. In each of these
lines Servadio identied a piece of that wide
mosaic which is human consciousness: it is not
possible to ignore one of them but to the
detriment of the overall image which we can

La vita di Servadio e stata n'cca di incontri e di
occasioni che hanno favorito questo suo interesse,

Alla fine degli anni Venti, subito dopo la laurea,
Servadio si trasferi a Roma chiamato dall’editore

tale lavoro che Servadio si stabili nella capitale ma,
soprattutto, fece uno degli incontri decisivi della sua
vita. Dovendo compilare la voce Psicoanalisi,

contatto epistolare con Freud, sia per riferirgli delle
sorti della Societd Psicoanalilica Italiana (fondata
a Roma nel 1932 con Servadio, Musatti e Perrotti),

since he had enrolled in the law faculty to get a

At the end of the Twenties, iust after having
taken his degree, Servadio moved to Rome, called
by publisher Tuminelli vvho Wanted him as
editor of the Treeeani ltalian Eneyelopaedia it
vvas beeause of this work that Servadio settled in
the Capital but, above all, he had one of the
deoisive meetings of his life_ Since he had to
compile the word Psychoanalysis, he tought to
eontaet the Tn-estine psvehiatrist Edoardo Weiss,
the first and unique Italian psychiatrist trained in
Vienna, at l:reud’s sehool_ Weiss had oarried out
3 his own analysis with Paul Fedem, one of Freud’s

di assistere ad uno dei tanti avvenimenti storici di
cui fu spettatore nell’arco della sua lunga vita:
l’espulsione dall’Associazione dell’eretico Wilhelm
Reich. Nel corso del congresso Reich venne
ignorato da tutti, tranne Servadio, che fece
l’amichevole gesto di invitarlo al suo tavolo per

perspicacia, dalla sua vivace cultura e, sicuramente,

La carriera di Servadio all’intemo del movimento
psicoanalitico intemazionale era cosi in piena
ascesa, ma nel 1938 egli fu costretto a lasciare
l’Italia per sfuggire alle persecuzioni razziali contro
gli ebrer Colrivando da tgmpg un profondo
interesse per la cultura orientale e per lo yoga, si
trasferi in India (non prima di aver chiesto lumi a

residenti in India. Servadio fu sempre molto

1987, tracciando una “semi-autobiograa”, come
egli stesso la deni, della pennanenza in India per
la Rivista di Psicoanalisi, commento: <<S0rvolo sui
tre anni e oltre dell’intemamento che dovetti subire.
Quando mi fu possibile ritomare a Bombay, ripresi
per un ceito tempo la mia attivita, ma infine -
quando le condizioni lo consentirono - tomai in
Italia. Era un freddo gennaio del l946>>. Tuttavia,
durante i sette anni di pennanenza in India,

di analisti e, tra l’altro, di frequentare lo Yogic
Health Centre, presso cui venivano studiate, sotto il

yogiche del maestro Sri Kuvalayananda. Peril resto
della sua vita, Servadio conservera vivo il ricordo di
quel forzato soggiorno indiano, e sosterra che la sua
visione del mondo si ispirava al Vedanta monistico
di Sankara,
In questo vasto interesse per gli stati di coscienza,
non poteva mancare l’incontro e la sperimentazione
con le sostanze psicoattive. Servadio si dira anzi
convinto, con Freud, che la psicoanalisi sara in
futuro soppiantata dai progressi nelle neuroscienze

Fondatrice e presidente della PF era in quegli anni
una singolare, nonché fascinosa, figura di medium e
di manager di origini irlandesiz Eileen Garrett. Una
donna dagli occhi penetranti, dal1’intelligenza
vivace, tanto disposta a farsi studiare
personalmente, quanto abile e munica
nel1’amministrare un organismo, la PF, che si
proponeva di promuovere la ricerca scientica in
parapsicologia. E a quei livelli, raggiunti grazie
all’impegno della Garrett - di cui Servadio restera
ammaliato - la parapsicologia non arrivera pin,
dopo la scomparsa del suo mecenate.
Commemorandone la morte, avvenuta nel 1970,
Servadio scrisse che, come soggetto volontario di
esperimenti parapsicologici, la Garrett accetto “che
le venisse inniettata questa o quella sostanza; o che
fosse invitata a cadere in trance mentre si trovava
dentro una gabbia di Faraday, o sotto l’inuenza di
un’alta dose di LSD”.
La maggior parte dei cultori italiani di etnologia
ignora che fu grazie ai nanziamenti ottenuti dalla
Garrett, su interessamento di Servadio, se Ernesto
de Martino riusci a condurre la sua celebre ricerca
in Lucania (da cui successivamente videro la luce
testi come Morte e pianto rituale e Sud e Magia).
Tra1’altro, anche Emesto de Martino inizio ad
occuparsi di etnologia a seguito di un suo generico
interesse per le esperienze paranormali, trovandosi
percio a anco di Servadio.
Sempre grazie all’appoggio nanziario della PF,
Servadio e il neurobiochimico Roberto Cavanna
realizzarono agli inizi degli anni Sessanta una
ricerca sistematica relativa all’eventuale inuenza
di sostanze come l’LSD e la psilocibina sulla
percezione extrasensoriale. Nel 1967, tre anni dopo
la pubblicazione della monograa della PF
intitolata ESP Experiments with L. S.D. and
Psilocybin in cui si rendeva conto dei risultati
ottenuti (insussistenti sul piano della dimostrabilita
scientica dell’ESP, ma pur sempre incoraggianti),
in un articolo sul “mito” dell’LSD, Servadio
scrisse: <<Vorremmo ricordare che secondo alcuni,
l’LSD e le sostanze affini potrebbero, in certi casi,
aprire il soggetto a esperienze che in mancanza di

“parapsicologiche”. Tale possibilita, tuttora sub
judice, ha ricevuto qualche elemento di confenna
dalle egperienze di Roma (SCfVadiQ-Cavanna),

abbastanza nota agli studiosi. E’ chiaro che anche
di fronte a tali possibilita, le reazioni possono essere
radicalmente opposte (non diversamente, d’altronde,

memorable Congresses patronized by the
Parapsychology Foundation (PF) of New York
Were dedicated to psy (synonymous of
"paranonnality") and to the modied states of
consciousness. Besides Servadio, personalities
such as Albert Hoffman (the discoverer of
L.S.D.), the neurophysiologists Raul Emandez-
Peon and W. Grey Walter, the psychologists
Joe Kamiya and Charles T. Tait, the
psychiatrist Humphry Osmond (the inventor
of the word "psychedelic") and many other
outstanding researchers took part in these latter
meetings, held in Le Piol (Saint Paul de Vence,
France)-
Founder and President of the PF Was in these
years an uncommon and fascinating figure of
medium and manager native of Ireland: Eileen
Garrett. A woman with piercing eyes, with a
bright intelligence as willing to make herself
studied personally as experienced and
