ABOUT THE 2/2004 ISSUE
Dear readers, this is the Second Issue of the
History of Science and Technology
European Pupils Magazine in 2004.
First of all, we are pleased to inform you that we
have received contributions from three new Euro-
pean Countries: our European Family is enlarging.
The first contribution comes from Blackwater
Community School, Lismore, Co. Waterford Ire-
land. The article, sent by Laura Ryan and her
friends, is about Robert Boyle, the famous Irish
Chemist, who was born there.
Then come the Bulgarians with
an interesting article on John
Vincent Atanasoff, the un-
known Father of Computers.
For this contribution, an Italian
technician (Antonella Corsaro)
developed a research through
Internet together with two Bul-
garian students in Sofia - Kiril
Radulov and Natalia Toškova.
Zsuzsanna Gyuris wrote a
paper about Aluminium Foam:
Production, Properties and Fu-
ture. She is a clever student at
the German school Carl-Von-
Linde-Realschule - striali del nostro tempo, la Schiuma di

tatives of EPM European Edi-
torial Board in Munich last March, this large Ger-
man school has decided to join the EPM Editorial
Project.
We have to thank Liceo Scientifico Giordano
Bruno - www.liceobruno.it in Mestre VE -
lsgbruno@tin.it for its valuable contributions. They
sent us five articles for publishing. The European
Editorial Board decided to issue them all together
in order to highlight their interesting work: from
Pasteur’s discoveries in Medicine to Redi and his
work about biotic generation of Life.

LE NOVITÀ DEL FASCICOLO 2/2004
Questo Secondo Fascicolo del 2004 di
History of Science and Technology
European Pupils Magazine
presenta contributi provenienti da tre nuovi Paesi
Europei; pertanto, la nostra Famiglia Europea si
sta ingrandendo.
Il primo articolo ci è pervenuto dalla Blackwater
Community School, Lismore, Co. Waterford Ir-
landa. L’articolo, ad opera di Laura Ryan e delle
sue compagne, riguarda Robert Boyle, il famoso
Chimico Irlandese, che è nato proprio a Lismore, e
nell’Istituto sono presenti edizioni
originali delle sue opere.
Dalla Bulgaria proviene un interessante
articolo su John Vincent Atanasoff, il
misconosciuto Padre dei Computer.
Questo saggio presenta un interessante
caso di collaborazione tra persone di
scuole e di Paesi diversi. Il tecnico italia-
no Antonella Corsaro ha sviluppato,
infatti, una ricerca su Internet, insieme a
due studenti bulgari di Sofia - Kiril Ra-
dulov e Natalia Toškova
Da una scuola Tedesca abbiamo ricevu-
to, ad opera di Zsuzsanna Gyuris, un
saggio su un prodotto tecnologico pre-
sente ormai in svariate produzioni indu-

laborare alla Rivista dopo la visita di alcuni rappre-
sentanti dell’EPM European Editorial Board in
Germania lo scorso Marzo, quando l’Istituito ha de-
ciso di aderire in maniera permanente al Progetto
Editoriale dell’EPM.
Dobbiamo segnalare in maniera particolare un
Istituto: il Liceo Scientifico Giordano Bruno-

per la quantità e la qualità dei suoi contributi. Infatti,
ci ha spedito cinque articoli per la pubblicazione e

on the essential but little-known Women’s contribu-
tion in Science and Technology, and on those Sci-

entists who were scorned by their colleagues at the
beginning, but earned fame only in late years. We
are pleased to inform you all that, in spite of the ru-
mours, Female students have written more articles
than Male ones. It is well known that males are more
interested in Science and Technology, but our ex-
perience in editing EPM shows that the situation is
exactly the opposite, especially for the 16-19 year-
old Section. We wish to thank all the teachers who
have co-operated with us in order to reach our tar-
gets and to guide their students in their interest on
Science and Technology; we hope that they will
continue in their precious help. We really think that
the future European Union Educational System
needs more self-confident and critical brainpower:
we are happy if we can contribute a little toward this
way.

l’European Editorial Board ha deciso di accettarli
tutti assieme nel presente fascicolo perché ognuno di
questi risponde perfettamente alle linee editoriali
della nostra Rivista.
Particolarmente interessanti sono risultate le sto-
rie delle scoperte medico-biologiche da Pasteur a
Redi e il dibattito a proposito della Generazione
Biotica della vita.
Gli altri articoli riguardano l’amore verso l’Uma-
nità, che è uno dei motori principali della Ricerca
Scientifica e il contributo essenziale delle Donne
scienziate che hanno dovuto lottare assai più dura-
mente dei colleghi maschi per affermarsi nel campo
sperimentale.
Per riassumere la quantità e la provenienza
(maschile e femminile) degli articoli, abbiamo pro-
dotto questo specchietto e abbiamo potuto rilevare
che, a riprova della crescente diffusione dell’amore
per la Scienza e la Tecnologia nelle Donne, la mag-
gior parte dei contributi sono stati prodotti da stu-
dentesse, il che va a sfatare la presunta superiorità
della presenza maschile nell’ambito della Ricerca
Scientifica anche ai giorni nostri.

Proprio la nostra esperienza editoriale dimostra
che il numero di contributi femminili è in stragrande
maggioranza soprattutto nella Sezione 19-16 anni
della Rivista.
Vogliamo ringraziare gli insegnanti che hanno
collaborato nello stimolare e nel guidare gli alunni a
partecipare allo sviluppo del nostro progetto edito-
riale di Storia della Scienza e Tecnologia e confi-
diamo nel proseguimento della cooperazione inter-
nazionale con i docenti per un incremento dei contri-
buti da parte degli alunni. Noi crediamo che il futuro
Sistema Educativo dell’Unione Europea vedrà trai
suoi obiettivi primari quello di promuovere la auto-
nomia di pensiero e di azione nonché le capacità cri-
tiche dei giovani europei: EPM è lieto di contribui-
re, con la sua opera, al raggiungimento di tale finali-
tà formativa.

EPM Award 2003
The Mpemba Effect
The European Editorial Board is pleased to
inform you that the Kramsacher Glasfachschule
EPM Award 2003 has been won by two Italian
schools from two different Southern Regions
(Calabria and Sicily).
It is an example of co-operation among students
from different schools and it shows how an interest-
ing article can be used by pupils to improve their
interest and attention towards Science and Technol-
ogy, as well as by teachers for their educational pur-

Concluding ...
Enjoy your Summer holidays: go swimming,
climbing, trekking, dancing, and so on.
Otherwise, if you have any doubts, curiosities or
questions about one or more Scientific and Techno-
logical topics, do not hesitate to carry out a research
consulting laboratories, University departments,
books, libraries, Internet and so on, in order to sat-
isfy your needs. After this, if you think it would be

L’Effetto Mpemba
Il Comitato Editoriale Europeo è lieto di infor-
mare che il premio internazionale EPM Award 200-
3 offerto dalla Glasfachschule di Kramsach, Au-
stria, è stato vinto da due scuole italiane di due di-
verse Regioni del Sud d’Italia, Calabria e Sicilia.
L’articolo rappresenta un esempio di coopera-
zione tra studenti di scuole differenti, e mostra come
un interessante saggio possa essere usato dagli stu-
denti per accrescere l’interesse e l’attenzione verso
la Scienza e la Tecnologia; inoltre, è utilizzabile
anche dagli insegnanti nella loro pratica didattica.

Divertiti durante le prossime vacanze estive:
pratica il nuoto, le scalate in montagna, il trekking,

de su uno o più argomenti di Storia della Scienza e
della Tecnologia, non esitare a fare una piccola ri-
cerca consultando laboratori, librerie, biblioteche,
Internet, dipartimenti di Università, ecc., per soddi-
sfare i tuoi bisogni. Dopo di ciò, se pensi che i risul-
tati delle tue ricerche possano essere apprezzati ed
utilizzati dagli studenti di tutta Europa, manda uno
scritto alla Redazione di European Pupils
Magazine, e vedremo di poterlo pubblicare. Tutti gli
studenti Europei potranno apprezzare la tua compe-
tenza e le tue conoscenze in Storia della Scienza e

know the results of your discoveries, send your pa-
per to the European Pupils Magazine, and we will
try to publish it. All the European students will en-
joy improving their knowledge in History of Sci-
ence and Technology.
If you do not feel like writing an article, but you
have creative imagination, you can write a Science-
Fiction Story, or, if you are an artist, you can draw
comic strips and send them to us. We will publish
the best work.

pokoleniu biotycznym.
Inne artykuły traktują o miłości do „Rodzaju
Ludzkiego”, o podstawowym, lecz mało znanym
udziale kobiet w rozwoju Nauki i Techniki, o tych
naukowcach, którzy zostali zlekceważeni przez
kolegów w początkach swojej kariery, lecz zdobyli
sławę w latach późniejszych.
Miło nam poinformować, że pomimo plotek,
uczennice napisały więcej artykułów niż uczniowie.
Jest faktem znanym, że mężczyźni są bardziej
zainteresowani Nauką i Techniką, ale nasze
doświadczenie w pracy nad EPM pokazuje sytuację
wręcz odwrotną, szczególnie w sekcji dla 16 – 19-
latków.
Chcielibyśmy podziękować wszystkim
nauczycielom, którzy współpracowali z nami w
osiągnięciu naszych celów i wzbudzali u swych
studentów zainteresowanie Nauką i Technologią.
Mamy nadzieję, że nadal zechcą nam pomagać.
Myślimy, że przyszły System Edukacyjny Unii
Europejskiej potrzebuje elastycznych i wusste und kritische Geister braucht und wir hoffen
zdystansowanych umysłów; jesteśmy szczęśliwi, że
możemy zmierzać w tym kierunku.
Nagroda EPM 2003 – Efekt Mpemba
Zespół Redakcyjny ma zaszczyt poinformować,
że Główna Nagroda EPM 2003, wykonana w
Glasfachschule, w Kramsach, została przyznana
dwóm szkołom z Włoch, z dwóch różnych regionów
południowych (Kalabria i Sycylia).
Jest to przykład współpracy pomiędzy uczniami
różnych szkół, który także pokazuje, w jaki sposób
zwiększyć wśród uczniów zainteresowanie Nauką i
Techniką, oraz jak nauczyciele mogą wykorzystać
taki materiał dla potrzeb dydaktycznych.

dieser Schule wurden fünf Beiträge zur Veröffentli-
chung eingereicht und das EPM Redaktionsteam
entschied diese alle zusammen in eine Ausgabe auf-
zunehmen, um die interessante Arbeit dieser Schule
hervor zu heben: von den Entdeckungen Lois Pas-
teurs in der Medizin bis zu Redi und seine Arbeit
über die Erzeugung von Leben.
Wir freuen uns, dass wir mehr eingereichte Arti-
kel von Mädchen als von Jungen erhalten haben –
entgegen aller vorgefassten Meinungen, welche den
Schülerinnen ein geringeres Interesse an Wissen-
schaft und Technik unterstellen. Insbesondere in der
Altersgruppe der 16-19 jährigen bestärkt uns die
Zahl der eingereichten Artikel in der gegenteiligen
Auffassung.
Wir möchten allen Lehrern und Lehrerinnen wel-
che mit uns an dem Ziel gearbeitet haben, ihre Schü-
ler und Schülerinnen zur Wissenschaft und Tech-
nik hinzuführen und deren Interesse zu wecken und
zu fördern. Wir sind überzeugt, dass das Bildungs-
system der Europäischen Union mehr selbstbe-
ein bisschen dazu beitragen zu können.
EPM Award 2003 - The Mpemba Effect
Das EPM Redaktionsteam freut sich bekannt zu
geben, dass der EPM Award 2003 für den besten
beitrag des Jahres von zwei italienischen Schulen
aus dem Süden des Landes (Kalabrien und Sizilien)
gewonnen wurde.
Dies ist ein schönes Beispiel für die Zusammen-
arbeit von Studenten verschiedener Schulen und es
zeigt, wie ein interessanter Artikel sowohl für die
Begeisterung der Schüler an der Wissenschaft und
Technik als auch für deren Lehrer im Unterricht
nützlich sein kann.

Podsumowanie ...
Bawcie się wspaniale podczas nadchodzących
wakacji: pływajcie, wspinajcie się, chodźcie po
górach, tańczcie itp.
Jeśli jednak wolicie inaczej spędzać wolny czas,
nie wahajcie się prowadzić własnych badań w
laboratoriach, na Wydziałach Uniwersyteckich,
korzystając z książek, biblioteki, Internetu itp, aby
zaspokoić waszą ciekawość. Jeśli uznacie za
pożyteczne podzielenie się swoimi odkryciami z
innymi europejskimi uczniami, wyślijcie wasze
prace do Europejskiego Magazynu Szkolnego, a
my postaramy się je opublikować. Wszyscy
Europejscy uczniowie będą zadowoleni, mogąc
wzbogacać swą wiedzę w dziedzinie Historii Nauki
i Techniki.
Jeśli ktoś nie ma ochoty pisać artykułu, ale ma
bogatą wyobraźnię i pomysły, może napisać
opowiadanie science-fiction lub narysować komiks i
przesłać go do nas. Opublikujemy najlepszą pracę

Was bleibt noch zu sagen?
Genießt eure Sommerferien, geht schwimmen,
klettern, wandern, tanzen usw.
Andererseits, wenn euch Themen in der Wissen-
schaft zweifelhaft, kurios oder fragwürdig erschei-
nen, so scheut euch nicht selbst nachzuforschen und
dabei die Hilfe von Hochschulen, Laboratorien, Bü-
chern, Bibliotheken und dem Internet in Anspruch
zu nehmen, bis ihr Antworten auf eure Fragen ge-
funden habt. Wenn Ihr dann glaubt, dass eure Ergeb-
nisse auch für andere Schüler in Europa interessant
und nützlich sein könnten, so schreibt doch einen
Artikel für EPM sendet diesen an die Redaktion und
wir werden versuchen eure Arbeit zu veröffentli-
chen. So kann es Spaß machen sein Wissen um die
Geschichte der Wissenschaft und Technik zu erwei-
tern.
Wenn euch nicht nach einem Artikel zumute ist,
ihr aber eine fantastische Geschichte oder Comics
Die besten Arbeiten werden wir veröffentlichen
