PREPOSITIONS OF TIME
Si usa AT, IN, e ON come segue :
AT + lora at 2 oclock at 6.30 at midnight
(anche ora dei pasti) at noon
at lunchtime
AT + la parola weekend at the weekend at weekends
AT + le festivit at Christmas at Easter
(2 o 3 giorni)
IN + il momento della in the morning in the afternoon
giornata in the evening
Si dice per at night
IN + periodi di tempo in May in summer in 1969
pi lunghi (mesi, stagioni, in the 18

anni...)
ON + il giorno della on Monday on Wednesday on Saturday
settimana
ON + un giorno singolo on Christmas day on Easter Monday

Non si usa at, on, e in davanti a : next, last, this, every, all, each, some, any, one, tomorrow e
yesterday :

What are you doing tomorrow evening ?
Si omette normalmente at quando si chiede (At) what time ... ?
Es. What time are you leaving ?
Si usa in anche per riferirsi a un periodo di tempo futuro :
Es. Were meeting in two weeks. ( = fra due settimane)
Nota lespressione in ..... s / time
Es. Were meeting in a weeks time
Si usa in anche per dire quanto si impiega per fare qualcosa :
Es. I can walk from my house to the town center in twenty minutes.
On time significa in perfetto orario, puntuali :
Es. The buses are very unreliable. They never arrive on time.
In time significa in tempo per :
Es. I hope my leg gets better in time for the football match on Saturday.
At the end significa alla fine di :
Es. Were going on holiday at the end of this week.
In the end significa alla fine, dopo un po di tempo, infine :
Es. At first I didnt like him, but in the end we became good friends.
DURING
Significa durante un periodo di tempo :
Es. We were in Rome during / in the summer.
Invece di during si pu usare anche in, ma during si preferisce per sottolineare che qualcosa
continua per tutto un periodo di tempo :
Es. We were in Rome during the whole of the summer.
Si usa during (non in), se ci si riferisce a unattivit p.es. una visita o un pasto :
Es. We visited the Colosseum during our visit to Rome.
During lunch I explained my plans.
WHILE
E simile a during, ma con una differenza, la stessa che c in italiano tra durante e mentre :
While viene usato solo davanti ad una frase, during solo davanti ad un nome :

FOR
Si usa con un periodo di tempo per riferirsi alla durata di qualcosa nel passato, nel presente o nel
futuro :
Es. We were in Rome for ten days last August.
They usually go on holiday for two weeks every summer.
Ill be in Manchester for the next three days.
Si usa al passato prossimo (present perfect) per sottolineare la continuit di qualcosa e si indica la
sua durata :
Es. Ive known him for three months.
SINCE
Si usa al passato prossimo (present perfect) per sottolineare la continuit di qualcosa e si indica il
momento dinizio del periodo :
Es. Ive known her since November.
AGO
E un avverbio e significa fa :
Es. Its ten oclock now. Helen left two hours ago.
They left five minutes ago.
Six months ago we moved to Manchester.
Si usa con il verbo al passato remoto (simple past), non al passato prossimo :
Es. I went to New York two weeks ago.
BEFORE
Ago indica prima di adesso mentre before prima di allora :
Es. John left school three years ago : Jane had already left school three years before.
Si usa con il Past perfect :
Es. I bought a car in August. Id passed my driving test four months before.
UNTIL / TILL
Si usa per dire fino al momento in cui :
Es. Ill stay until / till Sunday lunchtime.

FROM ... TO / UNTIL
Significa da ...... a, indica cio linizio e la fine dellazione :
Es. The shops open from 8.30 to 7.30 every day.
Ill be on holiday from Monday until / till Saturday next week.
BY
Si usa per dire non pi tardi di :
Es. Hell be home by ten oclock. ( non pi tardi delle 10)
