Marx’ distinction between centralization and concentration of capital. The centralization of capital
changes the distribution of existing capital, whereby the concentration changes the surplus sharing in
terms of profit and wage. In order to solve the failing rate of profit capitalism attempts, on the one hand,
to reduce the number of capital owners (determining as a consequence an increase in the number of
proletariat) centralizing capital in few hands by takeovers, mergers and bankruptcies; on the other
hand, by a process of concentration capitalism attempts to increase the productivity of labour, find
cheaper raw materials, increase the rate of exploitation (reduce the value of labour power), etc.
