The Dog, the Cock and the Fox
A dog and a Cock, who were the best of friends, wished very much to
see something of the world. So they decided to leave the farmyard and set
out into the world along the road to the woods. The two comrades travel-
led along in the very best spirits and without meeting any adventure.
At nightfall, the Cock, looking for a place to roost, as was his custom,
spied nearby a hollow tree that he thought would do very nicely for a
night's lodging. The Dog could creep inside, and the Cock would fly up
on one of the branches. So said, so done, and both slept very comfortably.
With the first glimmer of dawn, the Cock awoke and standing on
tip-toes, he flapped his wings and crowed lustily. He awakened a Fox not
far off in the wood. The Fox immediately had rosy visions of a very deli-
cious breakfast. Hurrying to the tree where the Cock was roosting, he said
very politely: "A hearty welcome to our woods, honoured sir. I cannot tell
you how glad I am to see you here. I am quite sure we shall become the
closest of friends."
"I feel highly flattered, kind sir," replied the Cock slyly. "If you will
please go around to the door of my house at the foot of the tree, my porter
will let you in."
The hungry but unsuspecting Fox went around the tree as he was told,
and in a twinkling, the Dog seized him.
Moral
Those who try to deceive may expect
to be paid in their own coin.
Il Cane, il Gallo e la Volpe
Un cane e un gallo, che erano migliori amici, desideravano moltissimo
vedere qualcosa del mondo. Decisero allora di lasciare l'aia e di partire per
il mondo lungo la strada che portava al bosco. I due compagni viaggiarono
di ottimo umore e senza incontrare alcuna avventura.
Al calare della notte, il gallo, cercando un posto dove appollaiarsi,
come era sua abitudine, avvistò nelle vicinanze un albero cavo che pensò
sarebbe stato molto adatto per l'alloggio per la notte. Il cane potrebbe
insinuarsi all'interno e il gallo volerebbe su uno dei rami. Così detto, così
fatto, ed entrambi dormirono molto comodamente.
Alle prime luci dell'alba il gallo si svegliò e, alzandosi in punta di piedi,
sbatté le ali e cantò vigorosamente. Ha risvegliato una volpe non lontano
nel bosco. La Volpe ebbe subito visioni rosee di una colazione davvero
deliziosa. Correndo verso l'albero dove era appollaiato il gallo, disse molto
educatamente: "Un cordiale benvenuto nei nostri boschi, onorato signore.
Non posso dirvi quanto sono felice di vedervi qui. Sono abbastanza sicuro
che diventeremo i più stretti amici". ."
"Mi sento molto lusingato, gentile signore," rispose maliziosamente il
gallo. "Se per favore fai il giro fino alla porta di casa mia, ai piedi dell'albero,
il mio portiere ti farà entrare."
La volpe affamata ma ignara fece il giro dell'albero come gli era stato
detto e in un batter d'occhio il cane l'afferrò.
Coloro che tentano di ingannare possono aspettarsi
di essere pagati con la stessa moneta.
