invented, and re-written, because the true mistress is language
itself. This implies a duplicity, one which must always also be at
the service of the target language. The well known assertion by
St. Jerome Non verbum e verbo, sed sensum de sensu has continued to
spark debate. The problematics of the impossibility of
translation but its empirical necessity have filled volumes.
Aware of all this, what enchanted us in this search for the
possible other word, for la parole: was the fire it caused in our
imagination. The word, as no one’s property, is a winged
creature flying in the infinite skies of time. Together we sought
to catch these creatures in their free flight.

I Was Magdalene
manca ancora molto all’alba
e vorrei che la notte non finisse
vado in controtendenza adesso
è più forte la voglia di ombre
la luce mi acceca
~2~
still hours until dawn
and I’d have no end to night
I’m clawing forward now
more covetous of shadows
blind in the light
~3~
sono fragile nel segno della mano
nei tratti arteriosi
delle finestre accese
se si potesse mischiare
col riverbero a pelle
di voluttà di carne di ardore
~4~
I’m here faintly in my hand
in the arterial lines
of glowing windows
if it could be mixed
with the inborn clangor
of heat of desire of hunger
~5~
Bologna mi accoglie
potente nelle sue strade
a quest’ora quasi senza gente
un vento di ponente
deciso mi ha spinto
nella sua direzione
o la fredda scala
la balaustra di una chiesa
il riparo di una prigione
~6~
Bologna takes me in,
imposing with its streets
all but empty at this hour
a west wind
sweeping took me
in its direction
barefoot as a child
stripped of comfort
I seek a vaulted archway
or a cold stairwell
a church’s handrail
a prison’s shelter
~7~
mi avvolgo nei miei capelli
come api nell’arnia
cenere e acqua nell’urna
rinverdite al lamento
torno indietro
alla mela acerba che fu
~8~
I churn inside my hair
like bees in a hive
water and ash in an urn
revived by tears
I turn back
toward the bitter apple that was
~9~
è un nome che cerco
che esca da quella porta sbattuta
che mi si appiccichi addosso
come la creta
sul palmo e sul dorso
pesante delle sue mani
~ 10 ~
it’s a name I’m after
slipping through that slammed door
sticking to my skin
like clay
heavy on the palms
and backs of his hands
~ 11 ~
domani sarà diverso domani
è un nome che cerco
che esca dalla finestra socchiusa
~ 12 ~
tomorrow it will be different tomorrow
it’s a name I’m after
slipping through the window crack
drying my blood
down from my neck brushing
my bruise-blue cheek
~ 13 ~
non tu che mi cerchi mattiniera
già con la borsa della spesa
mentre compi il tuo rito
~ 14 ~
not you, early riser at my door
already slung with a grocery bag
while you perform your ritual
my mother disowned
stoned on the sand
still hot with desire
my father powerless
before the laws of his sex
before the vices vendettas of men
~ 15 ~
fui anch’io come te
bella e pulita di seta lavata
la mia veste celeste
~ 16 ~
I too was once like you
fresh and pretty in clean silk
my sky-blue dress
~ 17 ~
ma resto ancora un poco
mi fermo in quel vicolo
cieco forse ricordo
~ 18 ~
but I stay a little longer
down that dead end alley
remembering perhaps
~ 19 ~
è un nome che cerco
nel tabacco incarbonito
rimasto come un cerchio
sanguinante di sperma
e di calci inchiodata
anch’io come te, Cristo
~ 20 ~
it’s a name I’m after
in the carbonized tobacco
remaining like a ring
on my limp shoulder
on my saliva-soaked
thigh and my vagina
~ 21 ~
c’era un rivolo prima
d’acqua sana pulito
lo specchio del volto
~ 22 ~
a trickling at first
of clear water the face’s
mirror washed clean
~ 23 ~
maledetta sì, la mia bellezza
schiava di aratri
campi e corpo solcati
le labbra carnose
i seni la pelle troppo bianca
sono stanca ora
~ 24 ~
a curse, yes, my beauty
slave to ploughs
fields and body furrowed
my fleshy lips
and breasts my too-white skin
I’m tired now
sleepless in bed
I see always the same face
and then the crown of thorns
~ 25 ~
il vicolo si riempie
di luci di voci di suoni
è il giorno di Santa Rita
se mi vedono mi chiedono
chi sono cosa faccio
non reggerò l’emozione
~ 26 ~
the street comes to life again
with lights and sounds and voices
on St. Rita’s feast day
women in lines
at the market stalls the prices up
for devotional flowers
~ 27 ~
il cielo è un tranello
Magdala è ancora là
sul lago bello Tiberiade
come la croce
che incontro sempre
nei rami dell’ ulivo
~ 28 ~
the sky is a ruse
Magdalene’s still out there,
on the even lake of Galilee
~ 29 ~
è un nome che cerco
una carne che risponda
non più ferita umiliata
e ancora ripresa
straziata strappata dalla fossa
dalle ossa staccata a forza
~ 30 ~
it’s a name I’m after
flesh that will respond
no longer wounded humiliated
~ 31 ~
forse la fuga
rinuncia magari follia
una bimba s’avvicina
pare un pulcinella
di quelli di Scampia
mi tende la sua mano
~ 32 ~
to flee perhaps
give up or else go mad
a child approaches
~ 33 ~
bagnata la fronte invece
in quei rabbiosi incontri
quante mani e impronte
tutte le conosco
appiccicate parassite
come crepe della carne
~ 34 ~
my forehead damp but then
in those furious encounters
how many hands and handprints
~ 35 ~
che nausea queste rose
mischiate con la cera
l’incenso la preghiera
tentare di rialzarmi
uscire dall’immondizia
così come dal corpo
~ 36 ~
what torment these roses
mixed with wax
incense prayer
to get up again
to get out of this filth
as out of my body
~ 37 ~
o amata da Dio
amata dalla gente
niente di te si è perso
~ 38 ~
beloved by God
or beloved by men
nothing of you was lost
~ 39 ~
è un nome che cerco
negli occhi dei miei figli
simili al padre simili troppo
~ 40 ~
it’s a name I’m after
in the eyes of my children
so much too much like their father
my skin lifted
belt marks the rusted
buckle voice swollen
~ 41 ~
e mi stringo nella veste
tocco i miei capelli
e ricordo ancora un gesto
~ 42 ~
and I curl up in my cloak
touch my hair and I still
recall a gesture
~ 43 ~
il tuo volto non lo scordo
lo cerco tra la gente
e qui sono tutte donne
le scarpe lucidate
alla santa degli impossibili
oggi raccomandate
~ 44 ~
your face is still with me
I seek it out in crowds
and here there are only women
~ 45 ~
neanche se è risorto
il cuore gli è comparso
al di là di quel sudario
la pietra funeraria
lo strazio del calvario
ho udito la sua voce
il vortice di luce
era così eterno e vero
eutanasia d’ogni ragione
~ 46 ~
not even if he’s risen
his heart appeared
from beyond that shroud
~ 47 ~
chi siete che mi venite
incontro allucinazioni
ombre del firmamento
~ 48 ~
who are you coming
toward me hallucinations
shadows of the firmament
~ 49 ~
è un nome che cerco
a tentoni nel fetido sottoscala
dove passo le notti
~ 50 ~
it’s a name I’m after
groping in the rank stair closet
where I pass my nights
~ 51 ~
ed è di nuovo sera
mi prende lo sgomento
Pietro Luca Giovanni
~ 52 ~
and again it’s night
I sink into dismay
Peter Luke John
and He is smiling
hand outstretched He
who’s altering my past
or trying to at least
He paces the stairs outside
while in here it’s oblivion
~ 53 ~
un bacio sì un bacio
sulla bocca me l’ha dato
un saluto una carezza
~ 54 ~
a kiss yes, a kiss
on the mouth he gave me
a goodbye a caress
my hands bloody
limbs trembling, and my heart
I mistook it for love
~ 55 ~
sono desta e piango piango
piango il giorno dell’inganno
il giorno in cui ho perso il senno
di quell’ultima candela
ora dorme anche la santa
nella teca e sulla panca
~ 56 ~
I’m awake and I’m crying crying
crying for that day of deceit
the day I lost my senses
~ 57 ~
domani forse verrà ripresa
se la notte non la uccide
se non muore per l’attesa
~ 58 ~
perhaps tomorrow he’ll seize her
again if she lives through the night
if the waiting doesn’t kill her
a fragrance stunned
the one who chose and caressed her
abandoned and forgot her
~ 59 ~
è un nome che cerco
nel sogno del mattino
l’unico che ricordo
~ 60 ~
it’s a name I’m after
in my morning dream
the one I still remember
~ 61 ~
chiuso il portone della chiesa
il battente irrigidito
la maniglia avvolta in sé
~ 62 ~
the church doors closed
the knocker rigid
the handle coiled tight
~ 63 ~
chi sono chi ero per carità
pensiero dammi forza
certezza dammi poi ricorda
~ 64 ~
who am I who was I, better yet
thought, give me strength
give me certainty then recall
~ 65 ~
la sorreggo per le spalle
per lo scialle che riannodo
poi un chiodo dopo l’altro
~ 66 ~
I bear her on my shoulders
on the shawl I’m now rewrapping
then one nail after another
~ 67 ~
sa che è l’ultimo respiro
come me come la folla
che attendiamo quella morte
poi il dileggio
lo sfogo rimasto memoria
la mano che non si alza più
~ 68 ~
he knows it’s his last breath
as do I as does the crowd
here awaiting this death
then derided
that lashing out a memory now
his hand that moves no more
~ 69 ~
Gesù, Gesù fissi gli occhi al cielo
nel gelo che tutto avvolge
non lasciarci qui a tremare
~ 70 ~
Jesus, Jesus your gaze on the sky
in this all-enveloping cold
don’t leave us here to tremble
~ 71 ~
è un nome che cerco
dall’amica che invoco
l’amica dal camice bianco
tu devi saperlo
tu che mi hai aperto
i cardini di questo tempio
~ 72 ~
it’s a name I’m after
from the friend I’m calling
the friend in her white tunic
~ 73 ~
la notte è un giardino
la sento qui fuori dalla mia tana
chiedermi le parole
~ 74 ~
the night is a garden
I smell it here just outside my den
asking me the words
of my vow to silence
stagnant waters of tragedy
deafening chorus of hired mourners
enemies of my voice
sing remission submission
they sing and suffering
~ 75 ~
nuova Onfale avevo
un Ercole ai miei piedi
incatenato filava ma non durò
si presero cura di me
quando passò la nave dei folli
quando i miei pensieri
~ 76 ~
a new Omphale with
a Hercules at my feet spinning wool
in chains but he did not last
take care of me
when the ship of madmen passed
when first my thoughts
~ 77 ~
ero Maddalena lo sento
lo so ho la sua stessa vena
sono la sua stessa forma
~ 78 ~
I was Magdalene I feel it

and have been always how to convince
he who silences me
~ 79 ~
c’ero al sepolcro l’ho visto
quel vuoto spietato di pietra
ho gridato ho pregato
~ 80 ~
I was there at the tomb I saw
that pitiless void of stone
I yelled I prayed
of his resurrection
and assumption into heaven
his words of approval
~ 81 ~
è un nome che cerco
perché muoio ogni momento
e rinasco ancora nuova
~ 82 ~
it’s a name I’m after
because every minute I die
and am reborn anew
as a shroud in my arms
in the remnants of youth
in my obscenely open hips

ero Maddalena lo sento
lo so niente consenso
per me in preda al vento
in preda all’afasia
è solo un alterazione
della mente della voce

I know it no concessions
for me pursued by the wind

God of humble mercy

I’ll even learn to pray to you
I’ll butcher it
to proudly show
here is the only suffering
~ 87 ~
cordoglio solita clausura
(ancora il morbo si affaccia
lo sento mi tortura)
a ridosso di strade
vendemmiato richiamato
da monadi e diafano calore
~ 88 ~
condolence the cloister I know
(again the illness turns to me
I feel it it plagues me)
~ 89 ~
quale semina raccoglie
la mia povera mente
quale festa di trebbiatura
cerimonia di canzoni
neanche spigolare è consentito
a chi scalza vaga cerca
~ 90 ~
what sowing gathers
my pitiful mind
what threshing feast
~ 91 ~
è un nome che cerco
nel pallore delle guance

gone in an instant
devoured by the senses
by painful births

tornerò veleggiando

my body won’t move
and a light pervades me
