 PRESENTAZIONE

L’opuscolo Jews in Action fu stampato e diffuso nel luglio 1941

negli Stati Uniti dal Jewish People’s Committee (Comitato del
Popolo Ebraico), organismo di massa del Partito Comunista
Americano. Scopo dell’opuscolo era sostenere la mobilitazione degli
ebrei contro l’antisemitismo proveniente dai settori reazionari della
società americana, e promuovere la mobilitazione in difesa degli
ebrei in Europa, sempre più perseguitati dopo l’inizio della seconda
guerra mondiale.

Ripercorrendo le vicende politiche del popolo ebraico in America

tra il 1936 e il 1941, l’opuscolo denuncia ripetutamente il ruolo delle
organizzazioni ebraiche maggioritarie, i cosiddetti “Big Four”:
l’American Jewish Congress, l’American Jewish Committee, il B’nai
B’rith (Figli dell’Alleanza, associazione caritatevole nata nel 1843) e
il Jewish Labor Committee. Queste organizzazioni, affermano i
redattori, per mantenere i propri privilegi e per una sorta di abitudine
al “quieto vivere” si prodigarono nel sabotare le manifestazioni di
protesta per le persecuzioni degli ebrei in Europa, e furono contrarie
all’apertura delle porte verso i rifugiati in America, addirittura
pronunciandosi contro progetti di modifica delle restrizioni
sull’immigrazione portati avanti da deputati democratici (vedi
l’emblematica lettera del rabbino Wise riportata nel testo).
Oggi da vari storici e studiosi è stato evidenziato che all’epoca
queste posizioni reazionarie furono portate avanti in modo
particolare dai sionisti: dal loro punto di vista, accogliere i rifugiati in
un altro paese che non fosse la Palestina avrebbe messo in
secondo piano gli scopi del sionismo. Per molti sionisti la
colonizzazione della Palestina arrivò a essere più importante della
vita di milioni di ebrei europei (sulla carenza del sostegno agli ebrei
europei durante l’Olocausto si consiglia ad esempio la lettura del
capitolo 24 de Il sionismo nell’età dei dittatori di Lenni Brenner).
Le associazioni ebraiche maggioritarie in America, succubi dei
governi alleati, rifiutarono sempre di coordinarsi con i partiti di
sinistra come il trotzkista Socialist Workers Party (SWP), o appunto
lo stalinista Communist Party U.S.A., che alla fine degli anni ’30 era
considerevolmente cresciuto fino a contare 90.000 iscritti, dato che
registrò poi un calo dopo il patto Ribbentrop - Molotov.

Il popolo ebraico ha di fronte gravi problemi al giorno d’oggi. Antisemitismo e
discriminazione in America, pogrom e completo annichilimento in molte altre parti
del mondo stanno suscitando nel popolo ebraico la consapevolezza di doversi unire
per l’azione prima che sia troppo tardi.
Come il popolo ebraico può raggiungere questa necessaria unità? Quale
programma di azione occorre fare proprio? In chi può il popolo ebraico riporre la sua
fiducia?
Per rispondere a queste questioni è bene ripercorrere la storia del popolo
ebraico negli ultimi cinque anni e vedere quali problemi sono emersi, e come sono
stati affrontati.

LA POLITICA DEL “ZITTI - ZITTI”

Nel 1936 gli ebrei in Germania, Austria, Polonia, Ungheria e Romania sono
stati annichiliti da crudeli persecuzioni, torture e pogrom legalizzati.
Malgrado il fatto che la necessità di agire e di unirsi fosse evidente, i leader
ebrei d’America hanno adottato la politica del “non so, non dico, non faccio”.
Era maleducazione alzare la voce. Forse i nazisti non avrebbero gradito.
Lo stesso atteggiamento di insensibilità e cecità è stato da loro adottato nel
contrastare l’antisemitismo in America. Essi hanno silenziato e sabotato ogni
tentativo di azione, e ciò mentre Coughlin1, Winrod2, Mosley3 and Pelley4
suscitavano un clima di violenza di massa contro gli ebrei.
Alcune delle principali organizzazione ebraiche hanno annunciato la
preparazione di una campagna contro l’antisemitismo. Gli ebrei sono stati spinti a
contribuire. E con la tradizionale generosità essi lo hanno fatto notevolmente.
Cos’hanno fatto queste organizzazioni con tanto denaro? Profondamente
dedite a combattere l’antisemitismo, hanno istituito elaborate funzioni, ingaggiato

personale altamente competente, creato efficienti dipartimenti di ricerca per
catalogare tutte le informazioni sulle attività antisemite.
E tutto ciò a quale scopo? Per soffocare tutti i tentativi di contrastare
l’antisemitismo.
Ora ad ogni persona ragionevole un tale voltafaccia sembrerà incredibile, ma i
fatti sono ben noti. Queste organizzazioni ebraiche spendono centinaia di migliaia di
dollari all’anno per raccogliere informazioni sulle attività antisemite, ma tengono
queste informazioni sepolte nei loro archivi come cadaveri in putrefazione.
Per di più, quando alcuni ebrei “malconsigliati” hanno sentito l’obbligo morale
di agire, i “leader” dell’ebraismo americano hanno smosso cielo e terra per zittirli.
Hanno fatto ricorso a ogni sorta di pressioni, legali e anche alcune non molto legali.
Hanno provato a far cessare il sostegno finanziario a questi gruppi con la calunnia,
l’intrigo e le campagne dietro le quinte.
E’ con dolore e indignazione che noi diciamo: i leader dei “Big Four”
(l’American Jewish Congress, l’American Jewish Committee, il B’nai Brith e il Jewish
Labor Committee) sono i responsabili di questi oltraggi.
Siamo arrivati al punto che chiunque abbia il coraggio di voler difendere il
popolo ebraico dai suoi nemici, è atteso da una dura lotta in seno alla comunità
ebraica.

LA CHIAMANO DEMOCRAZIA

E’ stato a quell’epoca che l’American Jewish Congress ha annunciato una

conferenza a Washington in preparazione del World Jewish Congress del 19365.
Rappresentanti di molte organizzazioni ebraiche, per conto di circa 130.000 membri,
sono giunti a Washington con l’auspicio che fosse utilizzata una procedura
veramente democratica nella selezione dei partecipanti alla conferenza. Queste
organizzazioni assicuravano il loro appoggio a qualunque programma fosse
presentato al Congresso Mondiale da parte di un ebraismo americano unito.
Sebbene molti delegati alla Conferenza di Washington abbiano riconosciuto la
proposta come l’unica condivisibile da tutti gli ebrei sinceri, i leader che
controllavano il Congresso hanno ritenuto di sabotare la proposta.
Respinti, ma non rassegnati, i rappresentanti di queste organizzazioni sono
andati a Ginevra per perseverare nella richiesta di unità entro lo stesso World Jewish
Congress. I leader, ignorando anche la propria opposizione interna, hanno impedito
ai rappresentanti di queste organizzazioni di presentare la richiesta al Congresso.

organismo mondiale di protezione degli ebrei dal crescente antisemitismo, ma la sua attività non fu
mai all’altezza della situazione, anche nei terribili anni dell’Olocausto. Il suo primo presidente fino
al 1949 fu l’influente rabbino americano Stephen Wise.

IL POPOLO NECESSITA DI ORGANIZZAZIONE

La delegazione sapeva che l'urgente bisogno del momento era che un popolo
ebraico coeso si unisse a tutti i progressisti per la preservazione della democrazia.
Resisi conto dell'inutilità di ogni ulteriore tentativo di convincere i leader
dell'American Jewish Congress dell'urgenza di tale azione, i delegati hanno fatto
ritorno in America e si sono dati l'obiettivo di costituire un'organizzazione per le
centinaia di migliaia di ebrei che desideravano portare avanti una lotta militante in
difesa dei diritti degli ebrei.
Per realizzare tale programma di azione è stato creato il JEWISH PEOPLE'S
COMMITTEE. Nessuno ha spiegato il programma del Jewish People's Committee
meglio di Harold L. Ickes, segretario agli Interni, quando ha detto: "Se un popolo
vuole sopravvivere, allora deve prima di tutto battersi per la sua libertà, se vuole
ricevere il sostegno altrui".
Il Jewish People's Committee ha sentito che era possibile, in realtà urgente,
trovare un programma comune per gli ebrei indipendentemente dalle loro opinioni
politiche, sociali, economiche o religiose. La sua interpretazione del significato di
"Unità di Israele" era l'unità per un obiettivo comune a prescindere dalle singole
dottrine o dogmi.

IL JEWISH PEOPLE'S COMMITTEE AGISCE

Verso la fine del 1936, la persecuzione degli ebrei in Polonia aveva raggiunto il
livello del pogrom. L'ebraismo americano ha domandato un'azione politica in loro
sostegno, e l'estensione di aiuti materiali. L'American Jewish Congress ha fatto un
appello per una conferenza. Di rimando il Jewish People's Committee ha inviato una
lettera di adesione, solo per sentirsi dire che la sua offerta di aiuto era stata
respinta.
Il Jewish People's Committee quindi ha inviato una lettera aperta ai delegati
alla conferenza nella quale affermava:

Vogliamo richiamare alla vostra attenzione che questa non è la sola

conferenza che è stata convocata per aiutare gli ebrei in Polonia.
Domenica 7 febbraio (1937) il Jewish Labor Committee terrà a sua volta
una conferenza sulla situazione polacca. Perchè delle conferenze separate?
Riescono queste conferenze separate a giungere ad azioni in difesa degli
ebrei polacchi? E' saggio indurci a convocare una conferenza separata?
Siamo certi che i delegati qui riuniti si rendono conto che i disastrosi
risultati di questa politica, che favorisce le divisioni interne al popolo
ebraico, serve solo a fare il gioco degli antisemiti e dei nemici del popolo
ebraico.

 Il Jewish People's Committee ha visto i compiti davanti a sè troppo
realisticamente per cadere nella trappola dell'inazione. C'era un gran lavoro da fare,
e la situazione degli ebrei di Polonia volgeva al peggio.
Il 5 aprile 1937 una delegazione di 200 persone ha presentato una petizione di
960.000 firme al console polacco a New York, richiedente l'immediata repressione
dei pogrom.
Il 26 luglio un'analoga delegazione ha chiamato in causa il segretario di Stato
Hull e l'Ambasciatore polacco. In seguito è stata convocata una marcia a Washington
per il 20 novembre, e in particolare si è invitato l'American Jewish Congress, il Jewish
Labor Committee e la Federazione degli Ebrei polacchi a unire le loro forze con
quelle del Jewish People's Committee in questa azione.
Queste organizzazioni che avevano lavorato parecchio per il "zitti-zitti",
naturalmente hanno boicottato gli sforzi del Jewish People's Committee.
Il dottor S. Margoshes, editore del The Jewish Day, non si è limitato
semplicemente a rifiutare la proposta, ma ha lanciato una campagna di calunnie e
strumentalizzazioni contro il Jewish People's Committee. Oltre ad accusare il Jewish
People's Committee di essere controllato dai comunisti, si è lanciato nella seguente
comica affermazione:

Non c'è alcun dubbio che il picchetto all'ambasciata polacca a

Washington da parte di un migliaio di rappresentanti del Jewish People's
Committee sarà per il nostro governo, così come per il popolo americano,
nulla più che un "fastidio" causato dagli ebrei. Questo tentativo deve
essere sconfitto e il più vigorosamente possibile, se necessario con la
polizia.

Vediamo dunque come si comporta un "leader" ebraico nel momento della

grave emergenza del suo popolo.
Ma nonostante tutti gli sforzi di questi "leader di Israele" la marcia a
Washington è stata un successo. Il popolo ebraico ha risposto magnificamente.
Centinaia di automobili, con a bordo i delegati, hanno raggiunto la capitale del
paese.
Alla conferenza tenutasi colà ha partecipato un migliaio di delegati, in
rappresentanza di organizzazioni ebraiche religiose, rabbiniche, sociali, culturali e
operaie per un totale di 420.000 iscritti.
Il giorno seguente i delegati hanno fatto appello al Presidente e al Vice-
presidente degli Stati Uniti, ai presidenti delle Commissioni esteri della Camera e del
Senato, e all'ambasciatore polacco.
Lo spazio dato a tutti questi eventi sui quotidiani ha portato all'attenzione del
popolo americano la tragedia di fronte alla quale si trovano gli ebrei polacchi.
Proteste indignate si sono levate da parte di centinaia di eminenti professori

universitari americani, editori, scienziati, scrittori e personalità pubbliche.
L'Ambasciatore polacco è stato obbligato a rilasciare dichiarazioni pubbliche come
claudicante difesa.
In questa azione il Jewish People's Committee ha messo in luce alcune
importanti verità: che la militanza e non il "zitti-zitti" è la sola via efficace di lotta per
i diritti degli ebrei, e che la gente si aspetta che gli ebrei si alzino in piedi e mostrino
dignità nella difesa del loro popolo dagli attacchi dei loro nemici.

UNITA’ SENZA IL POPOLO

Frattanto, il timore di una fuga precipitosa dalle fila delle maggiori

organizzazioni ebraiche, insieme alla pressione da parte del Jewish People
Committee, finalmente ha spinto i leader di queste organizzazioni a coordinarsi nel
General Council of Jewish Rights. La notizia di questa fusione ha arrecato grande
gioia fra gli ebrei. Il Jewish People’s Committee, sebbene gli fosse negato l’ingresso,
ha salutato questa fusione perché sperava che avrebbe portato a un qualche
programma di azione.
In poco tempo il General Council for Jewish Rights è ridotto a
un’organizzazione per la soppressione di qualunque richiesta di proteste pubbliche o
tentativi di azione nella lotta contro Hitler, all’estero e all’interno.
The Reconstructionist (edito da eminenti rabbini e pedagoghi) in un editoriale
del 2 dicembre 1938 intitolato “Esplorando il General Council for Jewish Rights” ha
affermato:

Lo scorso giugno era stato formato il General Council for Jewish

Rights…Ma che autorità ha mostrato il General Council for Jewish Rights
nell’ultima crisi? Hanno le organizzazioni componenti e i membri
individuali fatto quacosa per esprimere la loro protesta in una maniera
concreta? E’ stato fatto un qualche tentativo per mobilitare le masse in
una protesta organizzata o per trasformare la loro indignazione in azione
effettiva?...E’ questo il modo di difendere i diritti all’uguaglianza degli
ebrei?

LEADER E MEZZI LEADER

Sarebbe faticoso dettagliare il numero di altre circostanze in cui i leader delle

grandi organizzazioni ebraiche non solo non hanno agito, ma hanno fatto il possibile
per stroncare i tentativi di azione del Jewish People’s Committee.
Molti ebrei sono al corrente del fatto che quando il Presidente Roosevelt,
alcuni anni fa, ha ipotizzato un’invettiva pubblica contro Hitler per le persecuzioni

degli ebrei, un’influente organizzazione ebraica subito ha inviato una delegazione
di auto-nominati leader a Washington per dissuaderlo dalle sue intenzioni. La
belva nazista sarebbe forse impazzita, hanno affermato, e si sarebbe “sfogata”
sugli ebrei ancora di più.
Molti ebrei sono al corrente del fatto che quando rabbi Wise ha scoperto che
il deputato al Congresso Donald L. O’Toole aveva presentato una legge per
l’apertura delle porte dell’America a un maggior numero di rifugiati, gli ha scritto e
ha affermato:

Vorrei poter pensare che queste misure sarebbero approvate senza

ripercussioni per la comunità ebraica di questo paese. Sfortunatamente,
ho tutte le ragioni per credere che ogni sforzo compiuto in questa fase per
abolire le leggi sull’immigrazione, sebbene per scopi umanitari, porterebbe
a un aumento dell’ondata di sentimento antisemita nel paese…Vi
interesserà sapere che alcune settimane fa i rappresentanti di tutte le
principali organizzazioni ebraiche si sono riuniti per discutere la proposta
del Presidente e altre proposte fatte per abolire le leggi sull’immigrazione.
Si è convenuto che allo stato attuale, alla luce della disoccupazione che
grava sul paese e della propaganda diretta contro il popolo ebraico, e
diffusa in tutto il paese, tali proposte danneggerebbero gli scopi ai quali
tutti noi intendiamo lavorare. Per tale ragione è stato deciso che per ora
nessuna organizzazione ebraica sosterrà una proposta di legge che alteri in
qualsiasi modo le attuali norme sull’immigrazione.

Molti ebrei sono al corrente del fatto che quando Robert Edmonson, uno dei
principali antisemiti americani, è stato trascinato in tribunale per i suoi incitamenti
e i suoi sporchi testi contro gli ebrei, i leader dell’American Jewish Congress e
dell’American Jewish Committee hanno presentato un memorandum al giudice
James Wallace chiedendogli di non punire Edmonson. L’argomento che hanno
fornito era che punire Edmonson avrebbe significato una violazione del diritto alla
libertà di parola e alla libertà di stampa.
Strano che queste organizzazioni che soffocano ogni tentativo di libertà di
parola e di democrazia nella vita ebraica trovino così necessario accorrere in difesa
della libertà di parola degli antisemiti.

LA PIU’ GRANDE ADUNATA ANTI-NAZISTA

Altre volte il Jewish People’s Committe ha visto fallire i suoi tentativi di

portare all’azione l’American Jewish Congress e le altre organizzazioni ebraiche
apparentemente dedite a combattere i nazisti in Germania e negli Stati Uniti.

 Comprendendo la necessità di azione immediata il Jewish People’s
Committee, nonostante gli attacchi e i minacciosi avvisi dei “Big Four”, ha
annunciato un grande meeting di massa al Madison Square Garden il 21 novembre
1938.
Ha organizzato questo meeting con l’aiuto della German American League for
Culture, della North American Hungarian Democratic Federation, del German
American Workmen’s Sick and Death Benefit Fund, dell’American League for Peace
and Democracy, del Coordinated Council for Czecholslovak Democracy, e della Polish
National Alliance.
Ventimila persone hanno affollato la grande sala la sera del meeting, e molte
migliaia che non sono riuscite a entrare hanno ascoltato I comizi all’esterno. Il
meeting è stato guidato da alcuni eminenti uomini e donne come H.V. Kaltenborn,
Dorothy Parker, Ernst Toller, Dashiell Hammett, Michael Quill, il famoso leader dei
protestanti tedeschi Professor Tillich, il reverendo Harry F. Ward e altri. Migliaia di
lettere, cablo e telegrammi sono giunti da uomini e donne e organizzazioni di ogni
tipo e opinioni.
Non c’è dubbio che il meeting al Madison Square Garden ha avuto risultati
immediati e incalcolabili. Tutta la stampa del paese ne ha parlato. Le trasmissioni
radio l’hanno riportato. I principali quotidiani di New York hanno pubblicato articoli
su di esso sulla prima pagina, alcuni anche come prima notizia! L’evento ha fatto
rumore nel paese, ed è stato per lo più descritto dai giornali come la più grande
adunata anti-nazista mai tenuta negli Stati Uniti.

PERSEGUIRE COUGHLIN

Nel frattempo la crescente minaccia dell’antisemitismo negli Stati Uniti

destava nel popolo ebraico la consapevolezza che era urgente iniziare ad agire
contro ciò che metteva a repentaglio la sua stessa esistenza in loco. Qui in America
centinaia di organizzazioni fasciste e antisemite conducevano una campagna
organizzata contro il popolo ebraico. Demagoghi come Coughlin, Winrod, Pelley e
una serie di altri fascisti diffondevano la loro dottrina antisemita in lungo e in largo
in America. Il Christian Front6 e i bundisti nazisti7 giorno dopo giorno erano sempre
più sfacciati e invocavano apertamente i pogrom contro gli ebrei in America.
Comprendendo che gli interessi del popolo ebraico e della democrazia stessa
erano in pericolo, il Jewish People’s Committee ha iniziato una campagna contro
l’antisemitismo e l’odio razziale.

 In questa lotta esso ha potuto contare sull’aiuto e il supporto di centinaia e
centinaia di generosi americani. Da una parte all’altra del paese il Jewish People’s
Committee ha distribuito volantini e opuscoli che invitavano il popolo ebraico e il
popolo americano nel suo complesso a unirsi per eliminare dalla vita americana il
cancro dell’antisemitismo e del razzismo.
Una volta iniziata, la campagna che chiedeva al Dipartimento alla Giustizia di
perseguire le attività di padre Coughlin ha ottenuto subito l’appoggio di centinaia di
organizzazioni.
La campagna è stata intensa. Centinaia di migliaia di lettere sono arrivate al
Dipartimento di Giustizia in supporto della richiesta del Jewish People’s Committee.
Il 26 gennaio 1940 John Rogge, Procuratore Generale vicario, ha scritto al
Jewish People’s Committee promettendo che il Dipartimento di Giustizia avrebbe
perseguito padre Coughlin e le sue attività. Pochi giorni dopo, intervistato da alcuni
giornalisti, Rogge ha confermato ciò e ha affermato che il Dipartimento di Giustizia
avrebbe proceduto all’indagine.
Questa affermazione è stata riportata dalla stampa in tutto il paese.
Se è vero che il Dipartimento di Giustizia ad oggi non ha compiuto l’indagine
su padre Coughlin, un fatto che ha suscitato grande preoccupazione da parte dei
sinceri democratici in genere, questa campagna ha avuto un grosso impatto
nell’educare milioni di americani alla comprensione della minaccia
dell’antisemitismo e del fascismo.

SECONDA GUERRA MONDIALE

Oggi una disastrosa tragedia imperversa nel mondo, portando miseria e morte
a milioni di esseri umani. In mezzo a questa conflagrazione mondiale stanno i nostri
fratelli ebrei, che soffrono non solo in quanto esseri umani ma anche in quanto
ebrei, come membri di una minoranza.
Nei paesi conquistati da Hitler, Francia, Romania, Olanda e Cecoslovacchia, il
popolo ebraico ha a che fare con i muri dei ghetti, con decreti barbari che lo
escludono dalla vita civile e coi pogrom.
Né il destino è più benevolo con coloro che sono in fuga da Hitler e dalle sue
orde naziste. I governanti inglesi, presunti avversari dell’hitlerismo, vietano alle sue
vittime l’elementare diritto di asilo. Ebrei braccati e disorientati che riescono a
fuggire da queste lande di terrore si dirigono verso le spiagge della Palestina, solo
per sentirsi dire dal governo, che afferma di combattere tutto ciò che Hitler
rappresenta, che non sarà loro permesso di entrare. L’apice di questa straziante
vicenda è raggiunto quando la nave “Patria”, sulla quale sono stati trasferiti, salta in

aria e più di 200 di questi profughi vanno incontro alla morte vicino alla costa
palestinese8.
Nello stesso momento in cui questa tragedia aveva luogo, i giornali
annunciavano il fatto che il governo inglese aveva dato il permesso a 500 nobili e
signori della guerra polacchi di entrare in Palestina. Strano davvero che profughi
ebrei, senza casa e diseredati, in fuga di paese in paese, non abbiano avuto accesso
mentre i nobili polacchi siano stati ricevuti a braccia aperte.
Quando l’incidente ha avuto luogo, il Jewish People’s Committee ha chiamato
il popolo americano a protestare presso il governo inglese e a chiedere che ai
sopravvissuti fosse permesso di entrare in Palestina. Centinaia di eminenti cittadini
americani hanno sottoscritto una lettera aperta al governo inglese deplorando il
barabaro avvenimento.
Il defunto Lord Lothian, Ambasciatore inglese negli Stati Uniti, ha risposto alle
proteste del Jewish People’s Committee affermando che la ragione per cui questi
profughi non potevano entrare in Palestina era che vi erano “molte spie tra loro”.
Questo fragile pretesto è stato respinto anche dalla stampa ebraica più reazionaria e
dalle organizzazioni ebraiche. Nonostante questo la maggioranza della stampa
ebraica e delle organizzazioni ebraiche hanno fatto tutto ciò che potevano per
mettere una pietra sopra l’intero incidente. Rabbi Wise è andato oltre e ha lodato il
governo inglese per aver informato i nazisti del fatto che non potevano inviare spie
in Palestina.

ACCADE QUI

Qui in America i problemi che riguardano il popolo ebraico diventano ogni

giorno più complessi. I “leader” dell’ebraismo americano, che solo ieri facevano il
possibile per zittire tutte le proteste contro i nazisti, sono improvvisamente diventati
rumorosi e predicano che Hitler deve essere sconfitto e che i distruttori
dell’hitlerismo e i creatori di un nuovo ordine mondiale saranno i governanti inglesi,
ovvero coloro che hanno aiutato Hitler a salire al potere, che hanno sacrificato a
Hitler on paese dopo l’altro, che permettono che profughi senza aiuto muoiano alle
porte della Palestina.
Qualcuno potrebbe essere incline a pensare che questi leader si siano pentiti.
Ma se si studia la situazione un po’ più da vicino, si scopre che sta avendo luogo uno
strano fenomeno. Questi leader che strepitano di essere pronti a combattere Hitler
all’estero fanno il possibile per prevenire qualunque lotta contro le manifestazioni
dell’hitlerismo in patria.

per impedire che fosse utilizzata dagli inglesi per deportare i profughi ebrei alle isole Mauritius, in
quanto privi del visto per la Palestina. Il bilancio fu di 267 tra morti e dispersi e 172 feriti.

 In passato essi non negavano l’esistenza e il pericolo dell’antisemitismo.
Semplicemente dicevano che non era saggio protestare troppo vivacemente contro
di esso. Ora essi vanno un passo avanti e affermano che non c’è nulla da temere
perché l’antisemitismo in America è in “declino”.
Così, l’American Jewish Committee nel suo rapporto annuale afferma che le
agitazioni anti-ebraiche in America hanno “scontato un nuovo calo di reputazione
durante l’anno passato”.
I fatti corroborano questo rapporto? E’ l’antisemitismo veramente in declino
negli Stati Uniti? Vediamo!
Proprio mentre il Procuratore Generale vicario prometteva un’inchiesta su
Coughlin, alcuni membri del Christian Front9 venivano processati con l’accusa di
cospirazione per rovesciare il governo, diffusione di antisemitismo e furto di beni del
governo.
Durante il processo gli imputati sbraitavano e rumoreggiavano. Il pubblico
ministero Kennedy ha dato loro una mano. Durante la requisitoria ha affermato che
“gli scopi dichiarati del Christian Front sono buoni, paiono principi americani”.
Dodici imputati sono stati assolti. Il nuovo processo dei restanti cinque è stato
rinviato più volte, su richiesta della procura degli Stati Uniti. Alla fine, dopo una
lunga serie di ritardi e rinvii, il pubblico ministero Kennedy ha chiesto che l’intero
caso fosse archiviato.
Proprio l’American Jewish Committee, che ha affermato che l’antisemitismo è
in declino, ha pubblicato un nuovo rapporto secondo il quale nelle elezioni del 1940
vi era un numero più alto che mai di candidati che si presentavano con un
programma chiaramente antisemita.
La Commissione Dies10, istituita per investigare sulle attività antiamericane, ha
permesso che le sue audizioni fossero usate come strumenti di propaganda da
organizzazioni di vigilantes, noti crumiri e rabbiosi antisemiti. Essa si è
categoricamente rifiutata di perseguire nemici del popolo americano del calibro di
padre Coughlin, Henry Ford11, del Ku-Klux-Klan e una serie di altri fascisti e
antisemiti. Il deputato Dickstein ha affermato nell’atrio del Congresso che 110
organizzazioni fasciste hanno la chiave della porta del retro della Commissione Dies.

 Le pubblicazioni delle organizzazioni ebraiche che strepitano che gli ebrei non
hanno nulla da temere, sottolineano l’allarmante crescita delle attività del Ku-Klux-
Klan. Così per esempio in Ohio e Pennsylvania il Ku-Klux-Klan ha organizzato un
vergognoso boicottaggio dei commercianti ebrei.
Particolarmente allarmante in questo periodo è il grosso aumento della
discriminazione verso gli ebrei. Nell’industria essa ha raggiunto una tale estensione
che anche il governatore Lehman nel suo messaggio annuale alle camere riunite
dello stato di New York è stato costretto a portarne a conoscenza. Basta solo
guardare le sezioni degli annunci sui giornali per vedere quanto la situazione sia
allarmante. Giorno dopo giorno e settimana dopo settimana si può scorrere gli
annunci e trovarne sempre di più che si rivolgono a “solo cristiani”.
In California la National Youth Administration insieme alla State Relief
Administration hanno stanziato una certa quantità di fondi per l’addestramento di
giovani in progetti di aviazione e hanno annunciato che gli ebrei e i neri non sono
ammessi.
The American Hebrew, una rivista ebraica conservatrice, riporta che i dottori e
i dentisti ebrei sono discriminati nell’esercito e nella marina, a prescindere dal loro
livello di qualifica.
Quando sono state presentate al Congresso le leggi anti-immigrati,
organizzazioni liberali e progressiste in tutto il paese hanno portato avanti una
campagna contro l’approvazione di queste leggi, perché sapevano che non solo
erano in disaccordo con le profonde tradizioni dell’America, ma anche perché
queste leggi erano il preludio di attacchi e persecuzioni verso i nati all’estero.
Già ora si vede che le loro profezie non erano senza fondamento. Curt
Swinburne, segretario dell’American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign
Born, dopo aver compiuto un lungo tour in vari stati ha affermato che “l’estensione
e l’intensità della discriminazione allo stato attuale è molto maggiore di quanto i
resoconti precedenti potessero far credere”.
“Allo stato attuale la discriminazione riguarda direttamente non solo i non
cittadini, ma anche quei nati in America che hanno nomi ‘di suono straniero’. Per
esempio a Detroit, Michigan, ogni grande industria, con poche eccezioni, ha
licenziato i non cittadini e anche cittadini nati all’estero trovano quasi impossibile
reperire un impiego sicuro perché non sono nati in questo paese”.
Sulla base di questi fatti e di altre centinaia di casi di antisemitismo e
discriminazione, è ovvio che il popolo ebraico si trova di fronte a una situazione
molto grave. Ci si immaginerebbe che i leader ebraici facciano dei tentativi per
informare di ciò il popolo ebraico, e spingerlo all’azione. Invece assistiamo
all’esilarante spettacolo di queste organizzazioni ebraiche che raccontano al popolo
ebraico che l’antisemitismo “in America sta scomparendo”. E quando una rivista
come Friday rende al popolo ebraico e al popolo americano il grande servigio di

spiegare le attività antisemite di Henry Ford e Cameron12, queste organizzazioni non
solo negano la veridicità di queste rivelazioni, ma anche le bollano come “falsi!”.
Quando la rivista Friday ha contattato la stampa ebraica e ha chiesto di mettere su
una pagina l’annuncio di queste rivelazioni, essa ha rifiutato. E quando un redattore
di un giornale ebreo inglese a New York ha insistito nel pubblicare le notizie di Friday,
ha ricevuto una chiamata da un importante giornale ebraico che lo spingeva a
cessare la pubblicazione di tali notizie, con l’avvertimento che se non lo faceva
avrebbe ricevuto alcuni “buoni” annunci!
Perché le organizzazioni ebraiche tentano di nascondere questi fatti? Perché
arrivano ad attaccare le organizzazioni che sono ansiose di fare qualcosa contro il
crescente antisemitismo e discriminazione?
Diventa sempre più chiaro che nel loro desiderio di impedire che il popolo
ebraico divenga cosciente di queste scottanti verità, costoro lamentano che è in
gioco l’unità nazionale. Ma quale tipo di unità nazionale vi può essere quando ebrei,
neri e altri gruppi minoritari sono discriminati? Non era questo il tipo di unità
nazionale grazie alla quale Hitler è giunto al potere? Non era questo il tipo di
coesione nazionale che ha portato alla caduta della Francia?
Sta diventando sempre più evidente che quelli che cercano di distogliere
l’attenzione del popolo dai problemi che li riguardano qui in America non sono
veramente interessati alla distruzione dell’hitlerismo all’estero. La democrazia
all’estero non verrà preservata dalla distruzione della democrazia all’interno.
Il 21 giugno 1938, alla 49ma Conferenza annuale dei rabbini americani, rabbi
Philip S. Bernstein ha pronunciato un indirizzo intitolato “Verso un programma per il
giudaismo americano”. Durante il suo discorso ha detto:

Gli ebrei devono riconoscere che il loro benessere è legato alla

conservazione della democrazia…In questi tempi critici c’è una
comprensibile tendenza tra gli ebrei a evitare le questioni controverse e
persino a perdonare le ingiustizie, quando le proteste contro di esse
sembrano mettere a repentaglio la posizione degli ebrei. Sebbene ciò sia
comprensibile, è una linea errata e miope. Né la timidezza né il servilismo
hanno mai garantito sicurezza agli ebrei. Gli antisemiti non possono essere
placati dall’auto-umiliazione ebraica….In ultima analisi le forze della
reazione sono nostre nemiche. Da nessuna parte si può fare affidamento
su di loro, in Germania come in Italia come a Jersey City. Realisticamente
gli ebrei devono capire che in una crisi i loro amici fidati saranno trovati
non nel campo della reazione ma tra i lavoratori organizzati, tra i liberali,

 gli idealisti sociali, i difensori dei diritti civili e i gruppi cristiani liberali…essi
devono anche riconoscere che la democrazia politica è legata alla
democrazia economica. Se e quando il nostro sistema crollerà, non
accadrà per sommovimenti estranei ma per la sua incapacità a provvedere
a una vita dignitosa per gli abitanti di questo paese…

Il Jewish People’s Committee ritiene vere queste parole, oggi come quando
sono state pronunciate nel 1938. Piuttosto tragicamente, vi è chi oggi è molto
ansioso di dimenticarle, incluso colui che le ha pronunciate.
In questo periodo di fatica e impegno il Jewish People’s Committee ribadisce e
riafferma la sua posizione di fondo, ovvero che il popolo ebraico deve unirsi a tutti i
gruppi progressisti nella lotta contro l’antisemitismo e la discriminazione e per la
difesa della democrazia in patria e all’estero. L’hitlerismo non verrà distrutto da
coloro che hanno distrutto la democrazia in patria. L’hitlerismo verrà distrutto
soltanto da coloro che si uniscono e collaborano per il rafforzamento e lo sviluppo
del processo democratico ora e non in un ipotetico futuro.
Questa è la filosofia e la ragione dell’esistenza del Jewish People’s Committee.
Esso lavorerà indefessamente per l’unità di tutti gli ebrei allo scopo della propria
difesa comune. Esso è determinato in ogni momento a intraprendere decise azioni a
sostegno del popolo ebraico e contro i suoi nemici. E’ risoluto oltre ogni dubbio a
unirsi a tutte le persone oneste e volonterose per difendere la civiltà americana e gli
ideali democratici contro reazionari, fascisti, antisemiti, provocatori anti-operai e

The Jewish people face grave problems today. Anti‫׳‬

Semitism and discrimination in America, pogroms and com‫׳‬
plete annihilation in many other parts of the world are
awakening the Jewish people to the realization that they must
unite themselves for action before it is too late.
How can the Jewish people achieve this necessary unity?
What program of action shall they undertake? In whom
can the Jewish people put their trust?
To answer these questions it would be well to review
the history of the Jewish people during the past five years
and see what were the problems and issues and how they
were dealt with.

HUSH - HUSH POLICY

In 1936 the Jews of Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary
and Roumania were being annihilated by ruthless persecution,
torture and legalized pogroms.
Despite the fact that the need for action as well as unity
was all too evident, the Jewish leaders of America adopted
a policy of know nothing, say nothing and do nothing.
It was bad manners to raise your voice. The Nazis might
not like it.
The same dumb, blind ostrich technique was employed
by them in fighting anti‫׳‬Semitism in America. They were
hush‫׳‬hushing and sabotaging every attempt at action and this
at a time when Coughlin, Winrod, Maseley and Pelley were
whipping up a spirit of mob violence against the Jews.
Several of the leading Jewish organizations did make
announcements of preparing to wage a campaign agaist anti‫׳‬
Semitism. Jews were urged to contribute. And with tradi‫׳‬.
tional generosity Jews did contribute handsomely.
What did these organizations do with so much money?
Devoted ostensibly to fighting anti-Semitism, they established
elaborate offices, engaged highly competent personnel,, in‫׳‬
troduced efficient research departments which kept on file
every scrap of information about anti‫ ׳‬Semitic activities.
And all this for what purpose? To suppress all efforts
to fight anti‫׳‬Semitism.

 Now to every reasonable person such a change may sound
incredible but the facts are too well known for one's comfort.
These Jewish organizations spend hundreds of thousands
yearly to pile up information of anti'Semitic activities, but
they keep this information buried in their files like some
rotting corpse.
Moreover, whenever some "misguided" Jews have felt a
moral obligation to take action, the "leaders" of American
Jewry have moved heaven and earth to silence them. They
have used all sorts of pressure, legal ones and others not quite
so legal. They have tried to shut off financial support from
these groups by slander, by intrigue and by whispering cam‫׳‬
paigns.
It is with sorrow and indignation that we say: the
leaders of the "Big Four"—the American Jewish Congress,
the American Jewish Committee; the B'nai B'rith and the
Jewish Labor Committee have been guilty of these outrages.
It became an uphill struggle within the Jewish com‫׳‬
munity for anyone having the temerity actually to want to
defend the Jewish people against their enemies.

THEY CALL IT DEMOCRACY

It. was at this time that the American Jewish Congress
announced a Washington Conference to make preparations
for the 1936 World Jewish Congress. Representatives of many
Jewish organizations representing some 130,000 members
came to Washington with the plea that a truly democratic
procedure be followed in the selection of delegates. These
organizations pledged their support to any program that
pould be presented to the World Congress as representing
a united American Jewry. Although many delegates at the
Washington Conference recognized the proposal as the only
one any sincere Jew could entertain, the leaders who con‫׳‬
trolled the Congress saw fit to sabotage the proposal.
Rebuffed, yet unresigned, representatives of these or‫׳‬
ganizations went to Geneva to continue their earnest plea
for unity within the World Jewish Congress itself. The
leaders, ignoring the opposition; in their own ranks, prevented
the representatives of these organizations from presenting their
plea to the Congress.
THE PEOPLE NEED AN ORGANIZATION
The delegation knew that the crying need of the hour
was a united Jewish people joining with all progressive people
for the preservation of democracy. Realizing the futility of
making any further efforts to convince the leaders of the
American Jewish Congress of the urgency of such action,
these delegates returned to America and set themselves the
task of establishing an organization for the hundreds of
thousands of Jews who desired to carry on a militant struggle
for the defense of Jewish rights.
To accomplish this program of action, the JEWISH
PEOPLES COMMITTEE was created. No one better
expressed the justification for the Jewish Peoples Committee
program than Harold L. Ickes, Secretary of the Interior,
when he said: "If a people want to survive, then they must
first of all fight for their liberty if they want to receive,
support from others."
The Jewish Peoples Committee‫ ״‬felt that it was possible,
in fact urgent, to find a common program for all Jews
regardless of their political, social, economic or religious
beliefs. Its understanding of the meaning of "Unity of
Israel" was unity for a common objective regardless of in‫׳‬
dividual doctrine or dogma.

THE JEWISH PEOPLES COMMITTEE ACTS

Toward the close of 1936, the persecution of the Jews
in Poland had reached the pogrom stage. American Jewry
demanded that political action be taken in their behalf and
material aid be extended to them. The American Jewish
Congress issued a call for a conference. In response, the
Jewish Peoples Committee sent a letter of acceptance only
to be told that its offer of aid had been rejected.
The Jewish Peoples Committee thereupon addressed an
open letter to the delegates attending the Conference in
which it stated:
" W e w a n t t o call to y o u r a t t e n t i o n t h a t this is n o t t h e only
c o n f e r e n c e to aid t h e J e w s i n P o l a n d w h i c h has b e e n called.
O n S u n d a y , F e b r u a r y 7, t h e Jewish L a b o r C o m m i t t e e will
also hold a c o n f e r e n c e o n t h e Polish situation. W h y s e p a r a t e
conferences? D o such s e p a r a t e c o n f e r e n c e s s t r e n g t h e n a n y
action in d e f e n s e of t h e Polish J e w s ? Is it wise to compel

 u s t o call a s e p a r a t e c o n f e r e n c c ? W e feel c e r t a i n t h a t t h e
delegates assembled h e r e realize t h a t t h e d i s a s t r o u s results
of such a policy, f o r c i n g division w i t h i n t h e r a n k s of t h e
Jewish p e o p l e , c a n only serve t o play i n t o t h e h a n d s of
t h e anti-Semites a n d all enemies of t h e J e w i s h p e o p l e . "

The Jewish Peoples Committee saw the tasks before

it far too realistically to fall into the trap of doing nothing.
There was a great deal to be done and the plight of the Jews
of Poland was getting worse.
On April 5, 1937, a delegation of 200, presented a peti‫׳‬
tion bearing 960,000 signatures to the Polish Consul in New
York, demanding the immediate suppression of the pogroms.
On July 26th, a similar delegation called upon Secretary
of State Hull and upon the Polish Ambassador. Following
that a call was issued for a march on Washington on Novem‫׳‬
ber 20th and particularly urged the American Jewish Con‫׳‬
gress, the Jewish Labor Committee and the Federation of
Polish Jews to join their forces with those of the Jewish
Peoples Committee in this action.
These organizations which consistently worked for "hush‫׳‬
hush" naturally boycotted the efforts of the Jewish Peoples
Committee.
Dr. S. Margoshes, editor of the Jewish "Day" did not
let the matter rest merely with a rejection of the proposal,
but launched a campaign of calumny and abuse against the
Jewish Peoples Committee. Besides accusing the Jewish
Peoples Committee of being Communist-controlled, he un-
burdened himself of the following amazing statement edi‫׳‬
tonally:
" T h e r e is n o d o u b t a b o u t it, t h a t t h e p i c k e t i n g of t h e Polish
E m b a s s y i n W a s h i n g t o n b y a t h o u s a n d delegates of t h e
Jewish P e o p l e s C o m m i t t e e will be r e g a r d e d b y o u r g o v e r n -
m e n t as well as b y t h e A m e r i c a n p e o p l e as n o t h i n g b u t a

‫־‬nuisance' caused b y Jews. T h i s a t t e m p t m u s t b e s m a s h e d
a n d as vigorously as possible, a n d if necessary w i t h t h e
police."

Thus we see how a Jewish "leader" deports himself in

time of ultimate crisis for his people.
But despite all the efforts of these "leaders in Israel"
the march on Washington proved a sucess. The Jewish
people responded magnificently. Hundreds of cars, bearing
delegates, converged upon the nation's capitol.
At the conference there assembled one thousand delegates,
representing Jewish organizations, religious, fraternal, social,
cultural and labor, with a combined membership of 420,000.
The following day the delegates called upon the President
and the Vice-President of the United States, upon the Chair‫׳‬
men of the Foreign Relations Committees of the Senate and
the House, and upon the Polish Ambassador.
The publicity given to all these incidents in the daily
press drew the attention of the American people to the tragedy
facing the Jews of Poland. Protests of indignation were
issued by hundreds of leading American university professors,
editors, scientists, writers and public officials. The Polish
Ambassador was obliged to issue public statements ; in lame
defense. '‫^ ׳‬
In this action the Jewish Peoples Committee demon‫׳‬
strated a number of important truths: that militancy and
not "hush-hush" One effectiVe ^ay 6f fightirig; for" Jewish
rights, that decent Christians expect Jews to be upstanding
and display human dignity in defending their people from
the attacks of its enemies. V

UNITY WITHOUT THE PEOPLE

Meanwhile, a threatened stampede by rank‫׳‬and‫׳‬filers
within the major Jewish organizations as well as pressure
on the part of the Jewish Peoples Committee finally forced
the leaders of these organizations to organize into the General
Council for Jewish Rights. The news of this merger caused
universal rejoicing among Jews. The Jewish Peoples Com‫׳‬
mittee, although denied admittance into the Council, welcomed'
this merger because it hoped that it would result in some
program of action. .
Without loss of time the General Council for Jewish
Rights resolved itself into an organization for the suppression
of any demand for public protest 01 attempt at action in the
fight against Hitlerism abroad and at home.
The Reconstructionist (edited by leading Rabbis and
educators), in an editorial on December 2, 1938, called
"Paging the General Council for Jewish Rights" stated:
"Last June there was formed ,the General ‫׳‬Council for Jewish
Rights . . . But what leadership has the General Council for
Jewish Rights manifested in the latest crisis? Have the con-
stituent organizations and individual members been called
upon to express their protest in some concrete fashion? Hen any

 attempt 1>een: made1 to mobilize the masses in. organized protest
and to translate their indignation into effective action? . . .
Is this how the equal rights of Jews are to be defended?"

LEADERS AND MIS-LEADERS

It would be wearisome to retail the number of other
instances in which the leaders of the large Jewish organiza‫׳‬
tions not only failed to take action but tried their utmost to
wreck the efforts made by the Jewish Peoples Committee.
How many Jews are aware of the fact that when
President Roosevelt a few years ago, contemplated a
public blast at Hitler for persecuting the lews, an in-
fluential Jewish organization hurriedly sent a delegation
of self-appointed leaders to Washington to dissuade him
from his intentions. It might madden the Nazi beast,
they pleaded, and he would ‫״‬take it out" on the Jews
even more.
How many Jews are aware of the fact that when Rabbi
Wise discovered that Congressman Donald L. OToole had
introduced a bill into Congress providing for the opening
of the gates of America to more refugees, he wrote to him
and stated: :
" I wish I t h o u g h t t h a t it w e r e possible f o r this m e a s u r e t o

How many Jews are aware of the fact that when

Robert Edmondson, one of America's leading anti-
Semites, w a s hauled into court for his mob-inciting and

filthy literature against the Jews, the leaders of the
American Jewish Congress and the American Jewish
Committee presented a memorandum to Judge James
Wallace asking him not to punish Edmondson. The
argument they gave was that to punish Edmondson
would mean a violation of the rights of free speech and
free press.
Strange indeed, that these organizations which stifle
every attempt at free speech and democracy within Jewish
life should find it so necessary to rush to the defense of the
free speech of anti‫ ׳‬Semites.

THE GREATEST ANTI-NAZI RALLY

Again, in its efforts to arouse to action the American
Jewish Congress and other Jewish organizations dedicated
ostensibly to fight the Nazis in Germany and in the United
States, the Jewish Peoples Committee was frustrated.
Realizing the necessity of immediate action, the Jewish
Peoples Committee, despite attacks and direful warnings
from "The Big Four," announced a great mass meeting at
Madison Square Garden on November 21st, 1938.
It arranged for this meeting with the cooperation of the
German‫׳‬American League for Culture, the North American
Hungarian Democratic Federation, the German-American
Workmen's Sick and Death Benefit Fund, the American
League for Peace and Democracy, the Coordinated Council
for Czechoslovak Democracy, and the Polish National Alliance.
Twenty thousand people jammed the great hall on the
night of the meeting and many thousand who failed to gain
admission listened to the speeches outside. The meeting was
addressed by such prominent men and women as H. V.
Kaltenborn, Dorothy Parker, Ernst Toller, Dashiell Hammett,
Michael Quill, the famous German leader of Protestantism,
Professor Tillich, the Rev. Dr. Harry F. Ward and others.
Virtually thousands of letters, cables and telegrams poured
in from men and women and organizations of every variety
and belief.
There could be no question that the Madison Square
Garden meeting had immediate and incalculable results. The
entire press of the country featured it. The radio news
broadcasts reported it. The leading New York newspapers

carried accounts of it on the front page, several even head‫׳׳‬
lining it! The country buzzed with the news and by general
newspaper agreement it was described as the greatest anti‫׳‬
J^azi rally ever held in the United States. .

INVESTIGATING COUGHLIN
Meanwhile the growing menace of anti-Semitism in the
United States was awakening the Jewish people to the realiza-
tion that it was urgent that they begin to take action against
that which imperiled their own existence at home. Here in
American hundreds of fascist and anti-Semitic organizations
were carrying on an organized campaign against the Jewish
people. Demagogues like Coughlin, Winrod, Pelley and a
host of other fascists were spreading their anti-Semitic
doctrines through the width and breadth of America. The
Christian Front and the Nazi Bundists were growing more
brazen from day to day and were openly calling for pogroms
against the Jews of America.
Realizing that the interests of the Jewish people as well
as of democracy itself were at stake, the Jewish Peoples
Committee began a nation-wide campaign against anti-Semit-
ism and race-hatred.
In this fight it enlisted the aid and support of hundreds
upon hundreds of distinguished Americans. From one end
of the country to the other the Jewish Peoples Committee
distributed leaflets and pamphlets calling upon the Jewish
people as well as upon the American people as a whole to
join in eliminating from American life the cancerous evil
of anti-Semitism and race-hatred.
The campaign which it initiated demanding that the
Department of Justice investigate the activities of Father
Coughlin aroused the immediate support of hundreds of
organizations.
The campaign gathered momentum. Hundreds of thou-
sands of letters came pouring into the Department of Justice
supporting the demands of the Jewish Peoples Committee.
On January 26, 1940, O. John Rogge, Assistant At‫׳‬
torney General wrote to the Jewish People's Committee
and promised that the Department of Justice would in‫׳‬
vestigate Father Coughlin and his activities. A few days
later in an interview with reporters, Rogge confirmed this

and stated that the Department o! Justice would proceed
with such an investigation.
This statement was headlined in the press throughout
the country.
While it is true that the Department of Justice has
to this very day not carried through the investigation of
Father Coughlin, a fact which has caused serious misgivings
on the part of democratic-loving people generally, the results
of this vigorous campaign had a tremendous effect in edu‫׳‬
eating millions of American to an understanding of the menace
of anti-Semitism and fascism.

WORLD WAR II
Today, tragedy and destruction stalk through the world
bringing misery and death to millions of human beings. In
the midst of this world conflagation stand our own Jewish
brethren who suffer not only as human beings but as Jews,
as members of a minority group.
In the Hitler-conquered countries of France, Rumania,
Holland and Czechoslovakia, the Jewish people are faced
with ghetto-walls, barbaric decrees barring them from all
walks of life and pogroms.
Nor does fate deal more kindly with those who flee
from Hitler and his Nazi hordes. The British rulers, sup‫׳‬
posedly fighting Hitlerism, deny its victims the elementary
right of refuge. Hunted and helpless Jews who manage to
escape from these lands of terror wend their way to the
shores of Palestine, only to be told by the government, that
claims to be fighting everything that Hitler stands for, that
they will not be permitted to enter. The tragic climax to this
heartrending tale is reached when the ship "Patria" to which
they have been transferred, explodes and over two hundred
of these refugees go to their death at the very shores of
Palestine.
At the very moment that this tragedy was taking place,
the newspapers were announcing the fact that the British
Government had given permission to five hundred Polish
nobles and war lords to enter Palestine. Strange indeed that
Jewish refugees, homeless and destitute people, driven from
land to land, are refused admittance while Polish nobles
are received with open arms.

 When this incident took place, the Jewish Peoples Com‫׳‬
mittee called upon the American people to protest to the
British Government and to demand that the survivors be
permitted to enter Palestine. Hundreds of prominent Ameri‫׳‬
can citizens signed an open letter to the British Government
decrying this inhuman act.
The late Lord Lothian, British Ambassador to the United
States, replied to the protests of the Jewish Peoples Com‫׳‬
mittee by stating that the reason these refugees were not
allowed into Palestine was because there were "many spies
among them." This flimsy pretext was rejected by even
the most reactionary Jewish press and Jewish organizations.
Despite this, however, the majority of the Jewish press and
the Jewish organizations did everything in their power to
hush-hush the whole incident. Rabbi Wise went a step further
and praised the British government for serving notice upon
the Nazis that they could not get any spies into Palestine.

IT IS HAPPENING HERE
Here in America, the problems which confront the
Jewish people become more complex each day. The
"leaders" of American Jewry who only yesterday were
doing everything in their power to hush-hush all protests
against the Nazis have suddenly become loud in their
cries that Hitler must be defeated and that the British
rulers who helped Hitler come to power, who sacrificed
one country after another to Hitler, who allow helpless
refugees to die at the gates of Palestine, are the ones
who will destroy Hitlerism and create a new world
oilier.
Some people might be inclined to believe that these
leaders have repented. But as one studies the scene a bit
more closely, one finds that a strange phenomenon is taking
place. These leaders who cry that they are so ready to fight
Hitlerism abroad are doing everything in their power to
prevent any struggle against manifestations of Hitlerism at
home.
In the past they did not deny the existence and the
danger of anti-Semitism. They merely said that it was not
wise to cry out too loudly against it. Today they go a step
further and state that there is nothing to fear because anti‫׳‬
Semitism is on the "decline" in America.

It
 Thus, the American Jewish Committee in its annual
report states that anti‫׳‬Jewish agitation in America has "struck
a new low of disrepute during the past year."
Do the facts bear out these reports? Is anti-Semitism
really on the decline in the United States? Let us see!
At the very moment that Assistant Attorney General
Rogge was promising an investigation of Coughlin, a number
of Christian Fronters were being tried on charges of con‫׳‬
spring to overthrow the government, of spreading anti‫׳‬Semit‫׳‬
ism and of stealing government property.
Throughout the trial, the defendants ranted and raved.
Prosecuting Attorney Kennedy gave them a helping hand.
During his summary he stated that "the avowed purposes of
the Christian Front are good, sound American principles."
Twelve of the defendants were acquitted. The retrial of
the remaining five was postponed time and again, at the
request of the United States Attorney. Finally, after a long
series of delays and postponements, Prosecuting Attorney
Kennedy asked that the whole case be thrown out of court.
The very American Jewish Committee which stated
that anti-Semitism is on the decline issued another report
that in the elections of 1940, there were more candidates
running for public office on an out-and-out anti-Semitic
program than ever before.
The Dies Committee which was established to investigate
un-American activities has allowed its hearings to be used
as a propaganda platform for vigilante organizations, notori-
ous strike-breakers and rabid anti-Semites. It has consistently
refused to investigate such un-American enemies of the
people as Father Coughlin, Henry Ford, the Ku‫׳‬Klux‫׳‬Klan
and the host of other fascists and anti-Semites. Congressman
Dickstein on the floor of the House stated that 110 fascist
organizations have) the key to the back door of the Dies
Committee.
The very publications of the Jewish organizations that
cry the Jews have nothing to fear, point out week after week
the alarming increase in the activities of the Ku‫׳‬Klux‫׳‬Klan.
Thus for example in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania,
the Klu-Klux-Klan has instituted a most vicious boycott
against Jewish merchants.
Particularly alarming at this time is the tremendous
increase of discrimination against the Jewish people. In in‫׳‬

dustry it has risen to such an alarming extent that even Gov‫׳‬
eror Lehman in his annual message to the New York Legis‫׳‬
lature was forced to take cognizance of it. One need but
turn to the advertising sections of the newspapers to see how
alarming this situation is. Day after day and week after
week one can thumb through the ads and find, to an ever
increasing degree, ads which call for "Christian only."
In California the National Youth Administration to‫׳‬
gether with the State Relief Administration allocated a certain
amount of funds for the training of young people in aviation
project and announced that Jews and Negroes would not be
eligible.
The American Hebrew, a conservative Jewish magazine,
reports that Jewish doctors and dentists are discriminated
against in the Army and the Navy, no matter how well
qualified they may be.
When the anti-alien bills were introduced into Congress,
liberal and progressive organizations throughout the country
carried on a campaign against the passage of these bills
because they knew that they were not only entirely out of
keeping with the rich traditions of America but also because
they knew that such bills were forerunners of attacks and
persecution of the foreign-born.
Already it is evident that their prophecies were not
without foundation. Curt Swinburne, Secretary of the Amer‫׳‬
ican Committee for the Protection of Foreign Born, after
completing a tour through many states reported that "the
extent and intensity of existing discrimination is very much
greater than reports in the past would lead one to believe."
"The existing discrimination affects directly not only
the non-citizen and the naturalized citizen, but even those
native-born Americans who have 'foreign-sounding' names.
For instance, in Detroit, Michigan, every major industrial
plant, with few exceptions, has fired all non-citizens and
even citizens of foreign birth find it almost impossible to
secure employment because they were not born in this country."
On the basis of these facts as well as on the basis of
hundreds of other instances of anti-Semitism and discrimina‫׳‬
tion, it is obvious that the Jewish people are confronted
with a most alarming situation. One would imagine that the
Jewish leaders would make some attempt to acquaint the Jew‫׳‬
ish people with it and to urge them to take some action.

Instead we find the amazing spectacle of these Jewish organ‫׳‬
izations reporting to the Jewish people that anti-Semitism 1s
"dying out in America." And when a magazine like "Friday"
does the Jewish people as well as the American people
generally the great service of exposing the anti-Semitic activ‫׳‬
ities of Henry Ford and Cameron, these organizations not
only deny the truth of these exposes but even label them as
"forgeries!" When "Friday" magazine called up the Jewish
press and asked them to put in a page ad about these exposes,
they refused to do so. And when a writer for an Anglo‫׳‬
Jewish paper in T^ew Yor\ insisted upon publicizing the
findings of "Friday Magazine," he received a call from a
leading Jewish newspaper urging him to stop publicizing these
exposes and if he did he might receive some "good" adver‫׳‬
tising!
Why do the Jewish organizations attempt to hide these
facts? Why do they go out of their way to label organiza-
tions that are anxious to do something about this rising tide
of anti-Semitism and discrimination?
It is becoming increasingly clear that in their desire to
prevent the Jewish people from becoming aware of these
burning issues they cry loudly that national unity is at hand.
But what kind of national unity can there be when Jews,
Negroes and other minority groups are discriminated against?
Was this not the type of national unity under cover of which
Hitler came to power? Was this not the type of national
defense which brought the downfall of France?
It is becoming more and more obvious that those who
see\ to divert the attention of the people from the problems
which confront them here in America are not really interested
in the destruction of Hitlerism abroad. For democracy will
not be saved abroad by the destruction of democracy at home.
On June 21st, 1938, at the Forty-Ninth Annual Con-
ference of American Rabbis, Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein
delivered an address called "Toward a program for American
Judaism." During the course of his speech he said:
" J e w s m u s t recognize t h a t t h e i r w e l f a r e is b o u n d u p w i t h
t h e p r e s e r v a t i o n of d e m o c r a c y . . . T h e r e is a n u n d e r ‫׳‬
s t a n d a b l e t e n d e n c y a m o n g Jews i n these critical times to
w i t h d r a w f r o m all controversial issues a n d e v e n t o c o n d o n e
i n j u s t i c e w h e n protests against it m i g h t seem t o jeopardize
t h e Jewish position. H o w e v e r u n d e r s t a n d a b l e this m a y be,
it is an u n s o u n d a n d short-sighted policy. N e i t h e r timidity

 n o r s y c o p h a n c y h a s ever p u r c h a s e d security f o r t h e J e w s .
T h e a n t i ' S e m i t e c a n n o t be placated b y Jewish s e l f - a b a s e m e n t .
. . . I n t h e v e r y n a t u r e of t h i n g s t h e forces of r e a c t i o n a r e
o u r enemies. T h e y c a n n o t b e t r u s t e d a n y w h e r e , w h e t h e r i n
G e r m a n y , I t a l y , o r Jersey C i t y . Realistically t h e J e w m u s t
u n d e r s t a n d t h a t i n a crisis his t r u s t e d f r i e n d s will be f o u n d
n o t in t h e c a m p of reaction b u t a m o n g t h e o r g a n i z e d w o r k ‫׳‬
ers, t h e liberals, t h e social idealists, t h e d e f e n d e r s of civil
liberties a n d t h e liberal C h r i s t i a n g r o u p s . . .
" T h e y m u s t also recognize t h a t political d e m o c r a c y ia b o u n d
u p w i t h e c o n o m i c democracy. If a n d w h e n o u r system falls
it will n o t b e because of f o r e i g n a g i t a t i o n b u t b e c a u s e of its
inability t o p r o v i d e a d e c e n t living f o r t h e p e o p l e of t h i s
land . . . "

The Jewish Peoples Committee believes these words to

be as true today as when they were spoken in 1938. Tragic•‫׳‬
ally enough, there are those including the very one who
uttered these words, who are most anxious to forget them.
In this period of stress and strain the Jewish Peoples
Committee reiterates and reaffirms its essential position,
namely that the Jewish people must unite themselves together
with all progressive groups in the struggle against anti‫׳‬
Semitism and discrimination and for the defense of democracy
at home and abroad. Hitlerism will not be destroyed by those
who destroy democracy at home. Hitlerism will only be
destroyed by those who join together and work for the
strengthening and the heightening of the democratic process
now; and not at some future date.
This is the philosophy and justification for the existence
of the Jewish Peoples Committee. It will unremittingly
strive for the unity of all Jews in their common defense.
It is determined at all times to take forthright action in behalf
of the Jewish people and against its enemies. It is resolved
beyond any doubt to join with all men and women of decency
and good-will to defend our American civilization and dem‫׳‬
ocratic ideals against reactionaries, fascists, anti-Semites, labor
baiters and war-mongers. It will work for a better world in
which social justice will prevail for all, including the Jewish
people.
The Jewish Peoples Committee calls upon all Jews to
unite with all progressive forces to
DESTROY ANTI-SEMITISM!
ABOLISH DISCRIMINATION!
DEFEND DEMOCRACY AND PEACE!
