A LONG DAY FOR SUSAN

Its going to be a long day for Susan. She is waiting for an important phone call. Susan has been unemployed for ages now. She used to work as a personal assistant for the director of an important company in London. She liked her job, she had been in that company for ten years. She was very good at dealing with customers, in solving their problems. And she was a star with her boss: she could carry out any impossible request, from making out budget plans to be ready in just two hours, to catching his wife at the airport late at night after the lady had spent the day shopping in Paris. Then one day her boss called her. Ive got important news for you, he had said. And she thought: At last the promotion Ive been waiting for!. But when she got out of her bosss office, the feeling was not of satisfaction and pride, but rather of complete shock. She had just been made redundant. Weve had to cut our budget, her boss had told her. As if she had only been a number for all that time She didnt lose heart though, and started looking for a new job right away. Dozens of CVs sent didnt work though, and she soon found herself having to ask friends for money to pay for her bills. After a couple of months she went to the local job center and all she got was an offer for a job in a supermarket. Better than nothing, she thought. She did the interview, but the manager told her she was too qualified for the position, and he would need to interview other applicants.

I have been here for an hour I had been here for an hour I have known Melissa for months I had know Melissa for months = = = = Sono qui da unora Ero qui da unora Conosco Melissa da mesi Conoscevo Melissa da mesi

I have been studying English for two years = Studio inglese da due anni I had been studying English for two years = Studiavo inglese da due anni

FOR

Nel caso di complemento di tempo continuato, che copre tutto il periodo dellazione (o dello stato) I ve had this house for 3 years = Ho questa casa da tre anni

SINCE

Quando DA indica linizio dellazione. Ive had this house since 2005 = Ho questa casa dal 2005

I havent seen Tracy for 2 weeks We havent been worked since last week = Non vedo Tracy da due settimane = Non lavoriamo dalla scorsa settimana

ATTENZIONE! Osserva: E partito da unora (E unora che partito) Siamo arrivati da alcuni minuti He left an hour ago We arrived a few minutes ago

It is an hour since he left It is a few minutes since we arrived

KEEP YOUR MEMORY ALIVE! At some time or the other, it happens to all of us. You start forgetting names, or go to a room and find yourself wondering why you did. Or forget your wife's birthday. Don't see it as a catastrophe: there are ways to improve your memory! Remember (forgive the pun!) that it's always good to repeat and rehearse. If, for example, you're introduced to someone, say: Nice to meet you... and say his or her name. And if you meet someone called Tom and your best friend is called Tom, make a link to your mind. Alcohol and drugs (including legal ones such as cold remedies) reduce memory. Excessive drinking has got serious and long-term effects and should therefore be avoided. Food containing fish oils (salmon, trout and the like) increase blood supply to the brain. Coffee and tea improve reaction time and reduce your perception of fatigue. However, the intake of caffeine should not exceed 400 mg a day, which is the equivalent of eight cups of tea. One of the main reason for a temporary or long-term forgetfulness is an emotional state: stress. or feeling uncomfortable (and even feeling happy!) make it harder for the brain to retain information, which is what makes us forgetful. The best thing to do in this case is to manage your state. If going to the gym, seeing a friend or watching a film on TV can relax you, then do it. You will think things through clearly. Finally, triggers can help you remember things. Leaving Post-it notes or photographs around your house or workplace can definitely stimulate your brains, just like wearing differents socks or putting your watch on the wrong hand, that is, anything that can jog you out of your habitual pattern.

She is sending out Cvs these days. No, she hasn't got much luck. She just got an interview at the local supermarket. Well, she says she doesn't know. The manager there told her she is too qualified for the position. yes, really. A few problems with money. She's been asking me some to pay her bills. Of course! She's my best friend. Yes, I hope you do too. She's been very good with all of us. That's a good idea. I'll come with you!
