Nel numero di aprile di LUXURYfiles abbiamo pubblicato un
servizio sull'ultima impresa di un grande recordman italiano.
Abbiamo raccontato il sorvolo in deltaplano dell'Aconcagua,
la Yetta piu alta delia Cordigliera Andina, da parte di Angelo
e
D'Arrigo. Un primato che si andato ad aggiungere aile sue
precedenti imprese, il sorvolo dell'Everest, del Sahara, delia
Siberia. N€I corso delia sua carriera agonistica di volo sportivo,
che gli ha fruttato due titoli mondiali, Angelo ha, infatti,
sorvolato mari, deserti, vulcani e catene montuose insieme
a gru, aquile e rapaci di ogni specie.
La rivista era gia stampata quando ci ha raggiunto la notizia
dell'incidente aereo che ha posto prematuramente fine alia sua
straordinaria avventura sportiva ed umana e non abbiamo avuto
la possibilita di modificare quanto avevamo pubblicato.
Lo facciamo ora perche Angelo non era solo un personaggio
d'eccezione ma anche un amico, un grande amico.
E quando scompare un amico ci sentiamo piu soli. Ci poniamo
molte domande sui senso delia vita, sui valore delle nostre
aspirazioni, sui significato delle ambizioni che ci sospingono
nella nostra esistenza. Avvertiamo la vanita di buona parte
dei valori nei quali normalmente ci identifichiamo.
Se questa amico e, poi, una persona eccezionale, allora il
nostro animo viene colto da un senso di smarrimento;
ci domandiamo il motivo di un accadimento che sentiamo
profondamente ingiusto.
Cost e avvenuto - a me come a migliaia di persone-
all'indomani del banale incidente che ci ha privati non solo
di un autentico sportivo ma anche di una persona buona e
generosa, di un vero e proprio eroe del nostro tempo. Persone
di ogni parte del mondo - la sua notorieta era internazionale-
eta e classe sociale, che hanno letteralmente preso d'assalto il
suo sito con lettere, poesie, memorie 0 semplicemente con il
loro dolore.
Come mai una reazione cosi vasta in un'epoca che sembra
consegnata al cinismo ed ali'utilitarismo piu assoluti? Un'epoca
in cui molti credo no che l'uorno si sia finalmente affrancato
dalla necessita degli eroi, che, a dire dei piu, apparterrebbero

In the April issue of LUXURYfiles we published a report on the
latest enterprise of a great Italian record holder. We told of the
flight by hang-glider over the Aconcagua, the highest peak in
the Cordillera of the Andes, undertaken by Angelo O'Arrigo. A
record that he ended up adding to his previous enterprises, the
flight over Everest, over the Sahara, over Siberia. In the course
of his competitive career in the sport of flying, which won him
two world titles, Angelo flew over seas, deserts, volcanoes and
mountain ranges together with cranes, eagles and every species
of bird of prey
The magazine had already gone to print when the news reached
us of the aeroplane accident which had put a premature end to
his extraordinary sporting and human adventure and we were
unable to modify what we had published. We are doing so now
because Angelo was not only an exceptional character but also
a friend, a great friend.
And when a friend passes away we feel more alone. We ask
ourselves so many questions about the meaning of life, on the
worth of our aspirations, on the meaning of the ambitions which
drive us forward in our existence. We become aware of the
vainness of a large part of the values with which we normally
identify ourselves.
What's more, if this friend happens to be an exceptional person,
then our heart is struck by a sense of bewilderment; we ask
ourselves what the reason could be for an event which we feel
to be deeply unjust.
That's exactly what happened - to me as it did to thousands of
people - the day after a banal accident which has depti: ed u
not only of a true sportsman but also of a good and enerou
person, of a veritable hero of our times. People from a' parts of
the world - his fame was international- of e en age a.! social
 class, who literally bombarded his site with letters, poems,
memories or simply with their grief. How come such an
enormous reaction in an age which seems confined to cynicism
and absolute utilitarianism? An age in which many believe that
man has finally freed himself of the need for heroes, who,
furthermore, belong to an ancient world, still immersed in the
irrational? The cynicism of many of our contemporaries deems
, in fact, that the only heroes are the ones in novels and action
movies. There are those who have declared: 'poor are the people
who still need heroes'. I, however, believe that people who
believe they have no need for heroes are profoundly poor,
considering them an imaginative projection of human
aspirations, of that which we would all like to be but that no-
one is capable of achieving. And Angelo was an authentic hero,
a free spirit without any desire for power or celebrity.
Downright embarrassing was the simplicity with which he would
speak of his enterprises on television or in conferences in various
parts of the world. He would give the impression to viewers that
flying over Everest at 50 degrees below zero in a hang-glider or
crossing Siberia followed by cranes who had lost their own
migratory route or even, flying over the Sahara with migratory
hawks was like going for a walk on a beach. Or, better still, that
flying for him were like walking for us. One thing in particular,
struck you about Angelo. He had the same kind of attitude with
everyone. He could talk with the Managing Director of an
international cotnpeny; with an Ambassador, with a television
presenter or with a simple shepherd with exactly the same
attention and consideration. His wife told me, for instance, of a
family of shepherds on the slopes of Mount Etna - where his
airfield is =, simple people and also somewhat marginalised due
to extreme poverty, with whom he had a relationship of absolute
reciprocity. Indeed; in addition to helping them in practical terms,
he would behave in such a way as to make them feel participants
in his enterprises.
How many people we have had the fortune to know can we say
the same thing about? Who amongst us is able to set aside one's
status, one's position, the yardsticks of customary judgements -
not least of an personal interest - when dealing with others?
Wouldn't this alone be sufficient to distinguish a superior

Angelo was preparing an enterprise on which he had been
working for years: to return two condors - Inca and Maya, who
he had raised and had taught to fly - to Machu Pichu, the magical
Peruvian valley from which these birds of prey have disappeared.
Together we had met the Italian Ambassador in Peru to better
organise this enterprise, the event had been declared of national
interest by the Peruvian Government and National Geographic
was making a film and a documentary about it. It was to be an
extraordinary enterprise, from the sporting scientific, cultural,
ecological and spiritual points of view. An enterprise which -
thanks to the great courage and absolute dedication of his wife
to his memory - will fortunately go ahead even in his absence,
in his honour. Isn't this also a demonstration of the indelible
footprint that heroes leave on their worldly path?

cinismo di tanti nostri contemporanei ritiene, infatti, che gli
unici eroi siano quelli dei romanzi 0 dei film d'azione. C'e chi
ha affermato: 'povero quel popolo che ha ancora bisogno di
eroi'. 10 credo invece che sia profondamente povero il popolo
che crede di non aver bisogno di eroi, ritenendoli una
proiezione fantastica delle aspirazioni umane, di cia che tutti
vorremmo essere ma che nessuno e in grado di realizzare.
Ed Angelo era un eroe autentico, uno spirito libero senza
ammiccamenti per il potere e la celebrita.
Era addirittura imbarazzante la sernplicita con la quale parlava
delle sue imprese in televisione 0 in conferenze in varie parti
del mondo. Oava I'impressione agli spettatori che sorvolare
l'Everest a 50 gradi sotto zero su un deltaplano 0 attraversare la
Siberia seguito dalle gru che avevano smarrito il proprio
percorso migratorio 0, ancora, sorvolare il Sahara con i falchi
migratori, Fossecome fare una passeggiata sulla spiaggia.
0, meglio, che per lui volare Fossecome per noi camminare.
Una cosa, in particolare, colpiva di Angelo. Aveva 10 stesso
tipo di atteggiamento con tutti. Poteva parlare con
I'amministratore delegato di un gruppo internazionale, con un
ambasciatore, con un anchorman televisivo 0 con un semplice
pastore esattamente con la medesima attenzione e
considerazione. La moglie mi raccontava, ad esempio, di una
famiglia di pastori sulle pendici dell'Etna - dove c'e il suo
campo di volo -, persone semplici ed anche un po' emarginate
per via dell'estrema poverta, con cui lui aveva un rapporto di
assoluta reciprocita. Anzi, oltre ad aiutarli praticamente, faceva
in modo di farli sentire partecipi delle sue imprese.
Oi quante persone che abbiamo avuto la ventura di conoscere
possiamo dire 10 stesso?Chi di noi e capace di prescindere
dallo status, dalla posizione, dai criteri di giudizio consueti -
non ultimo quello dell'interesse personale - nel rivolgerci agli
altri? Non basterebbe Forsegia solo questo a contraddistinguere
una personalita superiore?
Angelo stava preparando un'impresa cui lavorava da anni:
riportare due condor - Inca e Maya, che aveva allevato ed ai
quali aveva insegnato a volare - a Machu Pichu, la magica
valle peruviana da cui questi rapaci sana scomparsi. Avevamo
organizzare questa impresa, dichiarata evento di interesse
nazionale dal Governo Peruviano, sui quale la National
Geographic stava girando un film ed un documentario.
Si trattava di un'impresa straordinaria, sia dal punto di vista
sportivo che scientifico, culturale, ecologico e spirituale.
Un'impresa che fortunatamente - grazie al grande coraggio ed
alia assoluta dedizione delia moglie alia sua memoria - sara
portata avanti anche senza di lui, in suo onore.
Non e anche questa una dimostrazione dell'impronta
indelebile che gli eroi lasciano nel loro percorso terrestre?
