San Miniato and its surrounding
area represent an insight of Tu-
scany, where a modern develop-
ment merges with old traditions
a millenary history and a great
artistic heritage, and all of this in
the middle of landscapes where
people are still living from day to
day. Architectural and artistic
treasures, which are mostly sto-
red in the museum network, cha-
racterized the old town centre,
which overlooks the typical Tu-
scan countryside.
In the wide open country
which borders the Arno river in
the north, we can find the mo-
dern urban centres, which are
connected by a close network of
streets and roads as well as the
productive activities, which are
mainly based on the tannery
industry and the manufacturing
of leather and hide. If we
glance to the south we can see
the large area of Valdegola,
which covers two thirds of the
area with its hills and woo-
dlands. It is beautiful country-
side, where you can still
breathe in the old rustic cul-
ture, with thousands of ways
which lead into woodlands that
are centuries-old and ancient
parish churches, where the
ground hides more of treasures
of San Miniato: its white truffle.

HISTORY
San Miniato is a land of Etru-
scan and Roman settlements as
the excavation of a necropolis of
the 3rd century B.C. and those
of a Roman Villa have shown
and these findings can be seen
at the National Archaeological
Museum in Florence, and in
smaller parts in our archaeologi-
cal collection.
The original nucleus of the
town dates back to the 8th cen-
tury, when according to the ori-
ginal document of 713,
seventeen Longobards built a
Church dedicated to the martyr
Miniato. Therefore the town
has Germanic origins and since
the Middle Ages it has been
known as San Miniato al Tede-
sco [ San Miniato in German].
In the following five centuries
San Miniato grew as a medieval
defensive wall, since Otto I,
Duke of Saxony in 962 made it
become one of the centres of
the imperial administration.
Subsequently Frederick II,
Duke of Swabia in 1218 built
his castle in San Miniato and
used it for tax collection purpo-
ses for central Italy. San Mi-
niato, when the swabian power
was in decline, became a free
municipality.
The town has large monaste-
ries, schools, institution and a
hospital. The municipal statues
which are stored in the histori-
cal archive, testify its indepen-
dency and luck. By the end of
the 14th century San Miniato
had to abide by the authority of
the new Florentine Signoria.

Cosimo dei Medici, promoted
San Miniato, making it be-
come a “See” in 1622. Thanks
to the development of the
town in the following cen-
tury, the diocese enriched it
with the St. Crocifisso San-
ctuary and the Great Theolo-
gical College. The cultural life
was very active and created
study and cultural academies,
including Accademia degli Af-
fidati, which later became Ac-
cademia degli Euteleti.
At the end of the nineteeth
century, San Miniato was a
well-established town. During
the World War II the German
army targeted and destroyed
the Tower of Frederick II and
some of the other middleaged
suburbs.
In 1957 the tower was rebuilt
to symbolize the rebirth of the
town.

gliere il prezioso tubero. A San
Miniato, una delle città che ha
fondato l’Associazione Nazio-
nale delle Città del Tartufo, è
stata costituita l’Associazione
Tartufai delle Colline Sanmi-
niatesi, che si occupa della tu-
tela e dello sviluppo delle aree
tartufigene e promuove questo
suo prezioso frutto nelle varie
manifestazioni di settore in
Italia e nel mondo. Ma è pro-
prio a San Miniato che, tutti
gli anni, nel mese di Novem-
bre, prende vita la Mostra Mer-
cato Nazionale del Tartufo

vetrina/mercato che ri-
chiama migliaia di
visitatori ita-
liani e stra-
nieri.

In the immaculate rustic hinter-
land, oaks, lime trees and wil-
lows host between their roots

found: it is the white truffle of
the San Miniato
hills . The Tuber
Magnatum Pico,
this is its scientific
name, is always a
source of wealth of
our lands. For over
a century San Mi-
niato trufflers go
out during the
night with their
dogs and walk through hidden
paths between the trees, trying
to capture the minimum and
weakest trace, so they can exca-
vate and collect the precious
tuber. In San Miniato, one of
the towns which has established
the National Association of the
Truffle Towns, also the Associa-
tion of the Trufflers of San Mi-
niato Hills has been created,
and works with the protection
and development of the areas
with truffles, promoting this
precious tuber in several field
exhibitions both in Italy and
worldwide. However, in San
Miniato every year in Novem-
ber, the National White Truffle
of San Miniato Festival
takes place, which is a
great showcase/mar-
ket that at-
tracts
thousands of
Italian and
foreign visitors.

Il teatro, lo spettacolo e San
Miniato sono strettamente le-
gati, forse fin da quando molti
secoli fa, i sanminiatesi elessero
a loro patrono
San Genesio, un
attore. L’ultima
guerra distrusse
il teatro civico,
ma solo pochi
anni dopo l’arte
teatrale torna a vivere a San Mi-
niato. Nel 1947 nasce infatti
l’Istituto del Dramma Popo-
lare che ogni
anno mette in
scena un
dramma ine-
dito di sog-
getto religioso.
Questa manifestazione ha visto a
San Miniato i maggiori dramma-
turghi internazionali e i più noti
registi ed attori italiani. Da oltre
venti anni San Miniato ospita
“Prima del Teatro”, la stagione
della Scuola Europea per l’arte
dell’attore che riunisce in giugno
e luglio i migliori maestri ed i
giovani talenti europei. Tro-
viamo anche, da oltre trent’anni,
“La Luna è Azzurra”, festival
internazionale del teatro di fi-
gura, l’Estate di San Martino,
premio riservato alle
compagnie amatoriali
italiane ed infine il Cen-
tro Studi “Paolo e Vit-
torio Taviani”, nato per
la valorizzazione del-
l’arte cinematografica e
dedicato a due sanmi-
niatesi illustri.

OF THEATRE
Theatre and shows in San Mi-
niato are closely connected, going
back many centuries, when its in-
habitants elected San Genesio as
their Patron Saint,
who was an actor .
The last war destro-
yed the civic theatre,
but after a few years
theatre art flouri-
shed again in San
Miniato. In 1947 the Istituto del
Dramma Popolare ( Institute of
Popular Drama) was created, and
each year it stages a brand new
religious drama. These shows
have brought into San Miniato
the most acclaimed International
dramatists and the most famous
Italian directors and actors. For
over 10 years San Miniato has ho-
sted “Prima del Teatro” , the sea-
son of the European School for
the art of the actor , which each
June assembles the best European
teachers and young talents. For
over thirty years we have been
able to take part in “La Luna è
Azzurra” ( the Moon is blue),
which is the international festival
of puppet theatre, Estate di San
Martino ( San Martino Summer),
which is a festival competition re-
served for Italian amateur compa-
nies, and finally the
Study Centre “Paolo
e Vittorio Taviani”,
which has been esta-
blished for the sup-
port of film art and
is dedicated to two
famous San Miniato
citizens.

VIA FRANCIGENA
La Via Francigena è stata fin
dal Medioevo il principale per-
corso di pellegrinaggio reli-
gioso verso Roma. Non solo
semplici pellegrini, ma re,
papi e principi
l’hanno percorsa.
Lungo il suo tra-
gitto, nel corso
degli anni, sono
sorti luoghi di acco-
glienza, ospedali,
monasteri,
borghi e ca-
stelli, tanto
da farla divenire un canale im-
portante di scambi culturali e
commerciali.
La Toscana conserva oggi evi-
denti tracce di questa impor-
tante via, dal passo della Cisa
fino al confine con il Lazio, in
un paesaggio di incomparabili
bellezze naturalistiche, segnato
da città ricche di
storia e cultura.
La Via Franci-
gena a San Mi-
niato attraversa il
centro storico
della città e tocca, ai piedi del
colle, l’antico borgo di San
Genesio, un tempo scelto da
papi, imperatori e vescovi per
riunirvi concili e diete. A San
Genesio il vescovo Sigerico
sostò nel suo viaggio di rientro
a Canterbury. Oggi San Gene-
sio è uno dei più importanti
siti archeologici della Toscana.

Francigena has been the pilgri-
mage path to Rome. It has
been walked not only by sim-
ple pilgrims, but also by Kings,
Popes and Princes. Along its
path and during the years, inns
hospitals, monasteries, bo-
roughs and castles have been
established, therefore the street
has become an important chan-
nel for cultural and trade ex-
changes. Even these days
Tuscany is maintaining tra-
ces of this important street,
from the Cisa Pass to the bor-
ders with Lazio, in Landscape

full of history and culture.
Via Francigena in San Miniato
passes through the old town
centre, touches the old borough
of San Genesio at the foot of
the hill, which
in ancient
times was cho-
sen by Popes,

Bishops, to

The Bishop Sigerico stayed in
San Genesio during his jour-
ney back to Canterbury. These
days San Genesio is one of the
most important archaeological
sites in Tuscany.

anni ‘50-’60 del

suo “boom”. Oggi
Ponte a Egola,
grazie alla mae-
stria ed alla laboriosità della
sua gente, è uno dei centri
conciari più importanti del
mondo, producendo l’85% del
cuoio a livello nazionale.
Innovazione e sviluppo tecno-
logico hanno esaltato la lavora-
zione tradizionale mediante
l’uso di sostanze naturali.
La concia al vegetale, tutelata
da un apposito consorzio, im-
partisce al cuoio particolari ca-
ratteristiche assai apprezzate
da stilisti e griffe.
Il distretto di Ponte a Egola
è un esempio sul piano della
sostenibilità ambientale in
virtù della realizzazione
dell’impianto di depurazione
centralizzato.

In the municipality of San Mi-
niato, specifically in the Ponte a
Egola area, there is one of the
European centers for the manu-
facturing of lea-
thers. From the
second half of the
nineteenth century
there were 4 tan-
neries with around
65 employeers. In
the fifties and six-
ties of the last cen-
tury this activity
boomed. These
days Ponte a Egola
, thanks to the master craftsman-
ship of this its workers , is one of
the most important tannery cen-
tres in the world, and produces
around. 85% of the national lea-

traditional manufacturing
through the use of natural sub-
stances. The vegetal tanning,
supported and promoted by a
specific consortium, gives leather
particular characteristic, which
are much appreciated by stylists
and designer labels. Ponte a
Egola district is an example in
the framework of environmental
sustainability thanks to the con-
struction of the centralized purifi-
cation plant.

Tra le tante opportunità, il no-
stro territorio offre a chi lo
abita, ma anche ad ogni visita-
tore, la possibilità
di praticare il suo
sport preferito. In-
fatti, grazie ai nu-
merosi impianti
sportivi comunali
ed alle diffuse
strutture sportive,
private, ci sono di-
verse occasioni per praticare le
più disparate discipline spor-
tive in impianti efficienti ed
aperti a tutti. Insieme agli sport
più conosciuti come il calcio, il
calcetto, la pallavolo, il ba-
sket, il tennis o il nuoto, si
può praticare il canottag-
gio e la canoa, nel grande
bacino remiero di Roffia,
oppure il golf in un im-
pianto privato aperto tutto
l’anno, e ancora il ciclismo,
l’atletica, il pattinaggio, il mo-
tocross ed infine il volo con
deltaplano o superleggeri.
Tutto questo in una realtà di
circa 30.000 abitanti, che
conta un movimento di mi-
gliaia di atleti praticanti e ap-
passionati, organizzati in più di
80 associazioni sportive. San
Miniato è quindi, a tutti gli ef-
fetti, città dello sport.
