During the Winter of 1967-8 Andres Segovia suggested that Ca-
stelnuovo-Tedesco and I should write works based on one another's
themes, devised for the purpose. His proposal clearly met with all-round
approval for Casielnuovo-Tedesco’s theme, dated 18 February 1968,
arrived in my letterbox. None of us knew, however, that time was
running out so fast; on 17 March he died, without receiving my contri-
bution.
At that time I seemed unable to find the proper vehicle for a work
based on this cherming theme end it remained unused, in fact, until
the beginning of 1978—ten years later. Raymond Burley (guitar) and
Stephen Bell (harpsichord), two Englishmen who work together re-
gularly in duo, requested a new work to present in a concert at the
Wigmore Hall, London, in late June of that year; this, it seemed to
me, was the right frame for Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s theme and my ela-
borations on it. The title, “Insieme’, refers to the collaboration of two
composers and of two instrumentalists; it means ‘together’ in Castel-
nuovo-Tedesco’s native Italian.

tion is, otherwise, left to the performer since harpsichords vary so
greatly in resources—and such directives would, moreover, be irre-
