Io non so per che cagione cotesti Signori si abbiano a maravigliar tanto che io mi sia per alcune settimane
ritirato alla campagna, e in un angolo di una Provincia come e' dicono. Ella nò che non se ne maraviglia
punto; la qual pur sa à che fine io mi vada cercando varj paesi, e quali cose io m'abbia potuto trovare in questa
Campagna. Qui lungi dal tumulto di Parigi vi si gode una vita condita dà piaceri della mente; e ben si può dire
che a queste cene non manca nè Lambert nè Moliere. Io do l'ultima mano à miei Dialoghi, i quali han trovata
molta grazia innanzi gli occhi così della bella Emilia, come del dotto Voltaire; è quasi direi allo specchio di
essi io vò studiando i bei modi della culta conversazione che vorrei pur transferire nella mia Operetta. Ma che
dira ella se dal fondo di questa Provincia io le manderò cosa che dovriano pur tanto desiderare cotesti Signori
inter beatæ sumum & opes strepitumque Romæ? Questa si è il Cesare del nostro Voltaire non alterato o
manco, ma quale è uscito delle mani dell' Autore suo. Io non dubito che ella non sia per prendere, in leggendo
questa Tragedia, un piacer grandissimo; e credo che anch'ella vi ravviserà dentro un nuovo genere di
perfezione à che si può recare il Teatro Tragico Francese. Benchè un gran paradosso parrà cotesto a coloro
che credono spenta la fortuna di quello insieme con Cornelio e Racine, e nulla sanno immaginare sopra le
costoro produzioni. Ma certo niente pareva, non sono ancora molti anni passati, che si avesse a desiderare
nella Musica vocale dopo Scarlatti, o nella strumentale dopo Corelli. Pur nondimeno il Marcello e il Tartini
ne han fatto sentire che vi avea così nell'una come nell'altra alcun termine più là. Intantochè egli pare non
accorgersi l'uomo de' luoghi che rimangono ancora vacui nelle Arti se non dopo occupati. Così interverrà nel
Theatro; e la Morte di Giulio Cesare mostrerà nescio quid majus quanto al genere delle Tragedie Francesi.
Che se la Tragedia, a distinzione della Commedia, è la imitazione di un'azione che abbia in se del terribile e
del compassionevole, è facile à vedere, quanto questa che non è intorno à un matrimonio o à un amoretto, ma
che è intorno à un fatto atrocissimo e alla più gran rivoluzione che sia avvenuta nel più grande imperio del
mundo, è facile dico à vedere quanto ella venga ad essere più distinta dalla Commedia delle altre Tragedie
Francesi, e monti dirò così sopra un coturno più alto di quelle. Ma non è già per tutto ciò che io credo che i più
non sieno per sentirla altrimenti. Non fa mestieri aver veduto mores hominum multorum & urbes per sapere
che i più bei ragionamenti del mondo se ne vanno quasi sempre con la peggio quando egli hanno à combattere
contra le opinioni radicate dall'usanza e dall'autorità di quel sesso, il cui imperio si stende fino alle Provincie
scientifiche. L'Amore che è Signor dispotico delle scene Francesi vorrà difficilmente comportare, che altre
passioni vogliano partire il regno con esso lui; e non sò come una Tragedia dove non entran donne, tutta
sentimenti di libertà e pratiche di politica, potrà piacere là dove odono Mitridate fare il galante sul punto di
muovere il campo verso Roma, e dove odono Cesare medesimo che novello Orlando si vanta di aver fatto
giostra con Pompeo in Farsaglia per i belli occhi di Cleopatra. E forse che il Cesare del Voltaire potrà correre
la medesima fortuna à Parigi che Temistocle, Alcibiade e quegli altri grandi uomini della Grecia corsero in
Atene; i quali erano ammirati da tutta la Terra e sbanditi à un tempo medesimo della patria loro.
Come sia, il Voltaire ha preso in questa Tragedia ad imitare la severità del Teatro Inglese, e segnatamente
SaKespeare uno de' loro Poeti, in cui dicesi, e non à torto, che vi sono errori innumerabili e pensieri

inimitabili, faults innumerable and thoughts inimitable. Del che il suo Cesare medesimo ne fà pienissima
fede. E ben ella può credere che il nostro Poeta ha fatto quell'uso di Sakespeare che Virgilio faceva di Ennio.
Egli ha espresso in Francese le due scene ultime della Tragedia Inglese, le quali, toltone alcune mende, sono
come quelle due di Burro e di Narciso con Nerone nel Britannico, due specchi cioè di eloquenza nel
persuadere altrui le cose le più contrarie tra loro sullo stesso argomento. Ma chi sa se anche da questo lato,
voglio dire a cagion della imitazione di SaKespeare, questa Tragedia non sia per piacere meno che non si
vorrebbe? A niuno è nascosto come la Francia e l'Inghilterra sono rivali nella Politica, nel Commercio, nella
gloria delle armi e delle lettere.
E si potrebbe dare il caso la Poesia Inglese fosse accolta a parigi allo stesso modo della Filosofia che è stata
loro recata dal medesimo paese. Ma certo dovranno sapere i Francesi non picciolo grado à chi è venuto ad
arricchire in certa maniera il loro Parnasso di una sorgente novella. Tanto più che grandissima è la discrezione
con che ad imitare gl'Inglesi s'è fatto il nostro Poeta, come colui che ha trasportato nel Teatro di Francia la
severità delle loro Tragedie senza la ferocita. Nella quale idea d'imitazioni egli ha di gran lunga superato
Addissono, il quale nel suo Catone ha mostrato a' suoi non tanto la regolarità del Teatro Francese quanto la
importunità degli amori di quello. E con ciò egli è venuto à corrompere uno de' pochissimi Drammi moderni,
in cui lo stile sia veramente tragico, e in cui i Romani parlino Latino, à dir così, e non Spagnuolo.
Ma un romore senza dubbio grandissimo ella sentirà levarsi contro à questa Tragedia, perchè ella sia di tre
Atti solamente. Aristotile egli è il vero, parlando nella Poetica della lunghzza dell' azione teatrale non si spiega
così chiaramente sopra questa tal divisione in cinque Atti, ma ognuno sa quei versi della Poetica Latina:
Il qual precetto da Orazio per la Commedia egualmente che per la Tragedia. Ma se pur vi ha delle Commedie
di Moliere di trè Atti e non più, e che ciò non ostante son tenute buone, non so perchè non vi possa ancora
essere una buona Tragedia che sia di tre Atti, e non di cinque.

E forse che sarebbe per lo migliore se la maggior parte delle Tragedie di oggidì si riducessero a trè Atti
solamente; dacchè si vede che per aggiungere i cinque, il più degli Autori sono pur stati costretti ad appiccarvi
degli Episodi, i quali allungano il componimento e ne sceman l'effetto, snervando come fanno l'azione
principale. E il Racine medesimo per somiglianti ragioni compose gia l'Ester di tre Atti e non più. Che se i
Greci nelle loro Tragedie benchè semplicissime furono religiosi osservatori della divisione in cinque Atti, è da
far considerazione, oltre che per lo più gli Atti sono anzi brevi che nò, che il coro vi occupa una grandissima
parte del Dramma.
Io non so se quivi io bene m'apponga; questo so certo che mi giova parlare di Poesia con esso lei che ne
potrebbe esser maestro come ella ne è talora leggiadrissimo artefice. Pollio & ipse facit nova carmina. Sicchè
ella bien saprà scorgere la bellezza di questa Tragedia, molti versi della quale hanno di gia occupato un luogo
nella mia memoria, e vi risuonan dentro in maniera che io non gli potrei far tacere. E pigliando principalmente
ad esaminare la costituzione della favola, ella potrà meglio giudicare di chichesia se il Voltaire siccome ha

aperto tra' suoi una nuova carriera così ancora ne sia giunto alla metà. Ma che non vien ella medesima à Cirey
à communicarci le dotte sui riflessioni? ora massimamente che ne assicurano essere per la pace già segnata
composte le cose di Europa. Niente allora quì mancherebbe al desiderio mio, e à niuno potrebbe parer nuovo
in Parigi che io mi rimanessi in una Provincia.
