farsa, ma nel senso migliore della parola, una farsa che si riattacca ai
drammi satireschi della Grecia antica, e che ha il suo corrispondente
pittorico nella arte figurativa vascolare del mondo ellenistico. C'e da
pensare che l'arte dialettale cosi come e espressa in questo tre atti di
Pirandello, si riallacci con l'antica tradizione popolare della Magna
Grecia, coi suoi fliaci, coi suoi idilli pastorali, con la sua vita dei campi
piena di furore dionisiaco, di cui tanta parte e pure rimasta nella tra-
dizione paesana della Sicilia odierna, la dove questa tradizione si e
conservata pit viva e piu sincera. g una vita ingenua, rudemente sincera,
in cui pare palpitino ancora i cortici delle querce e le acque delle fon-
tane: e una efflorescenza di paganesimo naturalistico, per il quale la
vita, tutta la vita e bella, il lavoro e un'opera lieta, e la fecondita
irresistibile prorompe da tutta la materia organica.3

Luigi Pirandello e un ' ardito' del teatro. Le sue commedie sono tante
bombe a mano che scoppiano nei cervelli degli spettatori e producono
crolli di banalita, rovine di sentimenti, di pensiero. Luigi Pirandello
ha il merito grande di far, per lo meno, balenare delle immagini di
vita che escono fuori dagli schemi soliti della tradizione, e che pero
non possono iniziare una nuova tradizione, non possono determinare
il cliche di moda. C'e nelle sue commedie uno sforzo di pensiero astratto
che tende a concretarsi sempre in rappresentazione, e quando riesce dS
frutti insoliti nel teatro italiano, d'una plasticita e d'una evidenza
fantastica mirabile.6

Sono stentati i tre atti, prolissi nella loro secchezza e congestione. I,'ar-
gomento e posto, ma non e vivificato, la passione e la follia sono presup-
poste, ma non rappresentate. Ii Pirandello non ha neppure realizzato
una di quelle sue " conversazioni " drammatiche, che se non conteranno
molto nella storia dell'arte, avranno invece molta parte nella storia
della cultura italiana.3
