for this style is quite curious, since it is called
Zuckerbckerstil: the style of the patisserie
chef, an extremely apt name.
Moscow City, on the other hand, in the
intentions of the client has to distance itself
from any antiquated styles of past architecture
and project itself into an even brighter future
than all the bygone futures of Russia, and
represent the latest trends in modern Western
architecture. Therefore foreign architects were
required. Seven designs were realised in the last
year alone, of which four bear the signatures of
foreign architecture studios.
THE PROJECT
The Federation complex occupies lot number
13 and is being made to a design by an
architecture company composed of Professor
Peter Schweger (ASP Schweger Assoziierte
Gesamtplanung GmbH, Hamburg) and by the
architect Sergei Tchoban (Nps Tchoban Voss
Architekten BDA Berlin). Their design emerged
victorious from an international competition
in which American, European and Russian
studios participated. After the competition
there was a long stage of re-working the design
to adapt it to the requirements of the client
and local legislation. Nevertheless, only minor
modications were made to the original design.
The idea of the twin towers grouped around a
central axis remained unchanged.
Finding the shape was a long process. The

restaurants and bars belonging to the hotel.
Inside the smallest tower (just 62 oors) there
will be ofces from the 7th to 32nd oors,
and from the 35th to the 46th; for the rest,
apartments from the 49th to 58th oor. On
the 59th and 62nd oors there is the Spa
and wellness centre of the hotel. The pin
located between the two towers contains an
elevator that starts at 50 metres from the atrium
and which connects to the public panoramic
platform which is found below the dome of
the tallest tower. It is easy to imagine the
spectacular effect of this view.
From a technical and construction viewpoint,
the building is simple reinforced concrete with a
massive central core and a corona of very strong
(B80) outer concrete pillars with a foundation
of inverted beams and oors that rest on a 4
metres thick underpinning. The central core of
the smallest tower constitutes the strengthening
element. The outer pillars have only a loadbearing function. In the tallest tower of 350
metres, however, the corona of outer pillars
assumes also a strengthening function, forming
a tube in tube system. Circular pillars and
beams form the outer tube, the walls of
the central core the inner tube. For further
strengthening, both are connected horizontally
at the technical oor levels, i.e every 20 oors.
At these levels the pin is also connected to
the towers with suspended bridges, something
that evidently also has a static function.
