This publication contains drawings and messages to Pope Francis from children who live on the outskirts of the European cities, from each of the 38 members of the Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE). The affectionate attention which Pope Francis shows to children mirrors Jesus invitation to welcome children (CF. MT. 18:16). We hope that the publication can help us to become like the children of Europe, to be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven

Lattenzione affettuosa con la quale il Papa si avvicina ai bambini rispecchia linvito di Ges di accoglierli (CF. MT. 18,16). Introduction
1. Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven (MT. 18:3). This radical and disarming statement by Jesus is mirrored in the gestures and words of the Holy Father Francis: Let us ask the Lord today that our way of speaking may be that of the simple, the language of children, the language of Gods children and consequently the language of the truth in love (HOmILY, ChAPeL OF The DOmUS SANcTAe MARThAe, 4 JUNe 2013). The Popes prayer is an invitation to all of us to let children teach us about abandonment to God our Father, in the same way they entrust themselves to their parents. It is precisely this filial attitude we encounter in the pages of this small publication. Reading the words and looking at the pictures of the European children enthusiastically addressing the Holy Father, an authentic and young Church emerges, a European Church united around its Pope. They describe a simple Church because it adheres to the truth of the most profound message of the Gospel: to entrust oneself whole-heartedly to Another, to Christ present in the world.

Through this book, given to the Holy Father on 4 September 2013 and signed by him in person for the children of Europe, we wanted to pay homage to Pope Francis with a greeting from the smallest people of our European continent which now has such need of a positive message full of hope, especially at this time of crisis which brings with it so many challenges 8 9

and difficulties. The Council of European Episcopal Conferences (CCEE) wanted the most simple children to pay homage to the Holy Father, as a reminder, too, that the centre of our faith needs the eyes and heart of a child to be understood. This publication has been promoted by the Catechesis section of CCEEs Catechesis, School and University Commission. There are 38 members of CCEE, 33 Bishops Conferences and five individual members, representing 42 countries of the European continent extending over a territory which goes well beyond the boundaries of the European Union. The publication has a drawing from each child from the CCEE members and so provides a real anthology of Europe. The short presentation which accompanies each drawing or text prepared by the European children reveals that many of them live on the outskirts of cities: so this reminds us of Pope Francis continuous appeal to go to the very existential outskirts of humanity to proclaim the joy and hope of the Gospel.

an incarnate and real God, influencing daily life in every aspect, the greatest testimony they offer is the certainty that it is possible to abandon oneself to Gods paternal love. Behind many of these children are difficult and complex family histories which they get on with in trust and hope in the future because they recognise that today they are already looked on with a look of love, which comes from the faces of people who have welcomed them in need and difficulty and who reflect the true love of Christ. Reminded by these children who in their way express what Jesus said and to which Pope Francis bears witness we adults, too, are invited to examine reality with the eyes of a child, recognising that everything is given, even in tragedy, and that everything comes from God. They can accompany us on our journey of faith. At the same time we adults have a major responsibility in teaching the future generations not to lose this wonder in the face of life, knowing well that they and all of us need education in faith through catechesis, in order to know Jesus better and everything he teaches us.

3. Even if they are addressing their Pope directly, at the same time these children have something to say to every one of the faithful. Their simplicity and joy seen in these drawings is surprising and amazing. It is no coincidence that this publication has been offered to the Pope in the Year of Faith: major concepts such as the eternity of God, his love for humanity and the centrality of our faith, are placed in a new light by looking at the example of the smallest. In the face of todays Europe, which many times reveals itself to be so closed to the possibility of 10 4. Pope Francis wrote in his first Encyclical: In union with faith and charity, hope propels us towards a sure future, set against a different horizon with regard to the illusory enticements of the idols of this world yet granting new momentum and strength to our daily lives. Let us refuse to be robbed of hope! (LUmeN FIdeI, 57). The children of Europe, in their drawings and texts, show us this hope of a certain future because they are able to recognise the presence of the 11

good God. Children who grow up in a family full of love and fraternity are like the lilies in the field: they neither toil nor spin and yet they are resplendent with joy and hope in shining clothes (CF. MT. 6:28-29). Sadly, we know well that todays world is not an idyllic place and that the leaves of the lily are too often prematurely damaged: despite their young age, so many children are forced to grow up in difficult situations and often live their infancy with negative experiences or do not always have what is necessary to live with dignity. It really pains the heart to hear how their innocence and purity can be corrupted in terrifying situations: but the lilies continue to show the beauty of God in their damaged form, too. With their contagious taste for life, their youthful desire and exuberant hope with which they look at today and the future, the children of Europe can be today true evangelisers, showing to each of us that Jesus Christ is knocking at our door at this presice moment of our lives. I entrust to his mother, the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the children who have contributed to the creation of this book and with them I entrust to her all the children of Europe: that together with her they may continue to show us the way towards God.

che siano i bambini a insegnarci labbandono a Dio nostro Padre, allo stesso modo in cui loro si affidano ai loro genitori. proprio questo atteggiamento filiale che incontriamo nelle pagine di questa piccola pubblicazione. Leggendo le parole e osservando i disegni dei bambini europei che si rivolgono con entusiasmo al Santo Padre, emerge una Chiesa autentica e giovane, una Chiesa europea unita intorno al suo Papa. Essi descrivono una Chiesa semplice perch attaccata alla verit del messaggio pi profondo del Vangelo: affidarsi con cuore a un Altro, a Cristo presente nel mondo.

Con questo libro, offerto al Santo Padre il 4 settembre 2013 e da lui firmato dal vivo per i bambini europei, abbiamo voluto rendere omaggio a Papa Francesco con un saluto da parte dei pi piccoli del nostro continente europeo che adesso ha cos bisogno di un messaggio positivo e pieno di speranza, specialmente in questo tempo di crisi che porta con s tante sfide e diffi-

colt. Il Consiglio delle Conferenze Episcopali dEuropa (CCEE) ha voluto che siano i pi semplici a rendere omaggio al Santo Padre, anche per ricordare che il centro della nostra fede richiede occhi e cuore di bambini per essere compreso. Questa pubblicazione stata promossa dalla sezione Catechesi della Commissione Catechesi, Scuola e Universit del CCEE. I membri che compongono il CCEE sono 38, di cui 33 Conferenze Episcopali e cinque membri individuali, e rappresentano 42 Paesi del continente europeo che si estendono su un territorio che si allarga ben oltre le frontiere dellUnione Europea. La pubblicazione contiene un disegno di ciascun bambino proveniente dai Paesi membri del CCEE e offre cos una vera antologia dellEuropa. La breve presentazione che accompagna ogni disegno o testo preparato dai bambini europei mostra che molti di loro vivono nelle periferie delle citt: questo ci ricorda quindi il continuo appello di Papa Francesco ad andare fino alle periferie esistenziali dellumanit per annunciare la gioia e la speranza del Vangelo.

Dio incarnato e reale, incidente nella vita quotidiana in ogni suo aspetto, la testimonianza pi grande che loro offrono la certezza che sia possibile abbandonarsi allamore paterno di Dio. Molti di questi bambini hanno alle spalle storie familiari molto difficili e complesse che comunque portano avanti con fiducia e speranza verso il futuro, perch riconoscono che sono guardati gi oggi da uno sguardo di amore, che passa dai volti delle persone che li hanno accolti nel bisogno e nella difficolt e che riflette lamore vero di Cristo. Richiamati da questi bambini che esprimono a loro modo ci che Ges ha detto e che Papa Francesco testimonia siamo invitati anche noi adulti a guardare la realt con gli occhi di un bambino, riconoscendo che tutto dato, pur nel dramma, e che tutto viene da Dio. Loro ci possono accompagnare nel nostro cammino di fede. Noi adulti allo stesso tempo abbiamo una grande responsabilit nelleducare le future generazioni a non perdere questo stupore davanti alla vita, ben sapendo che loro e tutti noi abbiamo bisogno delleducazione nella fede attraverso la catechesi, per conoscere meglio Ges e tutto quello che Lui ci insegna.

3. Anche se si rivolgono direttamente al loro Papa, questi bambini hanno allo stesso tempo qualcosa da dire a ogni fedele. La loro semplicit e gioia - contemplata attraverso questi disegni - fa sorprendere e meravigliare. Non un caso, poi, che questa pubblicazione sia stata offerta al Papa nellAnno della Fede: grandi concetti come leternit di Dio, il suo amore verso gli uomini e la centralit della nostra fede, sono posti sotto una nuova luce guardando lesempio dei pi piccoli. Davanti allEuropa di oggi, che si dimostra molte volte cos chiusa alla possibilit di un 14 4. Papa Francesco ha scritto nella sua prima enciclica: Nellunit con la fede e la carit, la speranza ci proietta verso un futuro certo, che si colloca in una prospettiva diversa rispetto alle proposte illusorie degli idoli del mondo, ma che dona nuovo slancio e nuova forza al vivere quotidiano. Non facciamoci rubare la speranza! (LUmeN FIdeI, 57). I bambini dellEuropa, nei loro disegni e testi, ci dimostrano questa speranza di un futuro certo perch sono capaci di ricono15

scere la presenza del buon Dio. I bambini che crescono in una famiglia piena di amore e fraternit sono come i gigli del campo: non lavorano e non filano ma risplendono di gioia e speranza in splendide vesti (CF. MT. 6,28-29). Purtroppo sappiamo bene che il mondo di oggi non un luogo idilliaco e che le foglie del giglio sono troppo spesso incrinate prematuramente: nonostante la loro piccola et, tanti bambini sono costretti a crescere in situazioni difficili e vivono spesso nella loro infanzia delle esperienze negative oppure non dispongono sempre del necessario per vivere con dignit. Davvero ferisce il cuore sentire come la loro innocenza e purezza possano essere corrotte in situazioni terrificanti: ma i gigli continuano a mostrare la bellezza di Dio anche nella loro forma incrinata. Con il loro contagioso gusto per la vita, il loro giovane desiderio e lesuberante speranza con la quale guardano loggi ed il futuro, i bambini dellEuropa possono essere oggi veri evangelizzatori, mostrando a ognuno che Ges Cristo bussa alla nostra porta in questo preciso momento della nostra vita. Affido a Sua madre, la Santissima Vergine Maria, i bambini che hanno contribuito alla creazione di questo libro e insieme a loro affido a Lei tutti i bambini dellEuropa: che possano insieme a Lei continuare a indicarci la via verso Dio.

Mihaela is 10 and lives in the Childrens Home along with her two sisters. Together with the picture, Mihaela wrote a short letter to Pope Francis: My name is Mihaela, I am ten years old, I am in Year 5 and I live in the Childrens Home, run by the Sisters of Jesus the Redeemer in Bacau, Romania. I came to the Sisters when I was six, along with my sisters, Denisa and Valentina, after we were abandoned by our parents. I grew up here with the Sisters, I developed artistic skills, I learned many beautiful and useful things for my life. I have many friends at school and here in the home. The Sisters are good and patient with us. They have taught me to pray and love everything around me: friends, flowers, animals, games, the poor and the sick. Two years ago I was very happy, because my mother came to find us. She works in Italy. She told me about her situation and her suffering because she left us alone, but she promised she will come to take me, along with my sisters, to live with her forever. I thank Jesus for this great gift of having found my mother again and I want all children in the world never to suffer and live calmly and happy with their families, that they may love them and look after them in faith in God.

Markian Salnikov is 11 and lives in the small village of Stare Selo, in the province of Pustomyty, in the Ukraine. Markian attends the school of national and sacred art for boys in Lviv. His picture shows St Peters Basilica, surrounded by various symbols of Ukrainian culture: flowers like the poppy, the fleur-de-lis, the daisy, ears of wheat, two storks in flight bringing as a gift to Pope Francis the Ukrainian flag and the berries of the red viburnum, a plant representing the Ukraine.
