A young, brilliant engineer In March 2008, Marko, a nineteen year old technician from Belgrade, had been working in an electronics firm for six months when one of the directors noticed how clever he was. The director, after speaking to the CEO of the firm, offered to send him to the USA for a year of graduate study in the New York Institute of Technology, on condition he would return to work in the firm once he had finished his studies. The Quality of Language For quite a few years now, there has been a lot of controversy going on in Britain and the States over the quality of language used by young people and, in particular, by students attending university. Professors on both sides of the Atlantic have been complaining about the number of students who, although they have high enough grades to get into university and are quite motivated once they are there, simply cannot write essays. Apparently, it is not just their vocabulary that is poor but also their grammar and syntax. One professor said that, because of this poor level of language, students not only have difficulty in expressing their ideas in written work but also have difficulty trying to express them in oral discussion. He added that students often get frustrated because they think they have explained something clearly, when to the teacher it is not clear at all.

But attention to this problem concerning language is not at all new. George Orwell wrote an interesting article in 1946 called Language and Politics as he was worried about how decadent English was becoming at the time. In the article, he wrote that thoughts are expressed through language and, if that language is poor, how can you explain what you are thinking? He also said this inability to explain ones ideas can often lead to frustration and anger. Unfortunately, some people think that trying to prescribe a correct form of English is like trying to return to using candles instead of electricity. Others feel that if we dont do so, we are going to find ourselves with more and more frustrated people incapable of explaining why they are. 86.
