All the scenes relating to the maniac wife belong to the Gothic tradition. e.g:the candlelight
revelation in a mirror of Bertha, with discoloured face and bloodshot eyes, before she tears Jane's
wedding veil.
Between the halves of the divided chestnut-tree she sees the moon, blood-
red and half-overcast; it throws a doleful glance before disappearing, and
the wind wails in the distance. The previous evening, chilled by a fireless
hearth (in Rochester's absence), she had retired early; the wind with its
'mournful under-sound' continued in her dreams as she followed an
unknown road, carrying a little child (to dream of which was 'a ... sign of
trouble', xxi). She had also dreamt that Thornfield was a ruin.

cial weeks preceding her marriage is only one symptom of a

fragmentation of the self comparable to her 'syncope' in
the red-room.

femminilità, "the domestic angel of the house and the outcast",proiettando sulle
due donne le sue aspettative.Jane, però, è lontana dal modello di
sottomissione, abnegazione e virtù celebrato dai vittoriani come ideale
femminile: è anticonvenzionale, appassionata, intelligente, volitiva.
The madwoman visits Jane's bedroom on the night before her wedding and
tears the wedding veil, the symbol of matrimony. (She does not, interestingly
enough, attack Jane.)
Visions, dreams, premonitions, ominous signs are linked with events in a
mysterious way.
Rochester sees destiny menacing him at Thornfield. Jane is angry at
Rochester's and society's concept of marriage. Jane's anger and
fear
about her marriage intensify, she begins to be symbolically
drawn back into her own past, andspecifically to reexperience
the dangerous sense of doubleness that had begun in the red-
room. The first sign that this is happening is the powerfully
depicted, recurrent dream of a child she begins thave..Her
Jane's fears of her own alien "robed and veiled" bridal image, are objectified by the image
of Bertha in a "white and straight" dress.Bertha is Rochester's secret wife and in a sense
her own secret
Bertha only comes into the novel after a third of its action has taken place.
As she emerges, anxieties which have been located elsewhere, especially in the character of Jane herself,
become absorbed and centralized in the figure of Bertha. Her figure can be included among those characters -
perceived as “monsters"-that reveal what we could be and instill doubts in ourselve
Rochester definisce la donna, “a wife at once intempered and
unchasted", con “a nature the most gross, impure, depraved".La sua originaria bellezza, sensuale e dunque
appearances has been associated with an experience (or repression) of anger on Jane's part.[Gilbert and
Gubar].
·Jane's feeling of "hunger, rebellion, and rage" on the battlements were accompanied by Bertha's "low,
slow ha! hal" and "eccentric murmurs."
Jane's apparently secure response to Rochester's apparently egalitarian sexual confidences was followed
by Bertha's attempt to incinerate the master in his bed. Jane’s unexpressed resentment at Rochester's
gypsy-masquerade found expression in Bertha's terrible shriek and her terrible attack on Richard
Mason.Jane's anxieties about her marriage, and in particular her fears of her own alien bridal image, were
objectified by the image of Bertha in a white dress.
lacerante e disumano,a fearful shriek.
sucked the blood: she said she'd drain my heart".
I lived with that woman upstairs four years, and before
that time she had tried me indeed: her character
ripened and developed with frightful rapidity; her vices
sprang up fast and rank:...Bertha Mason,-the true
daughter of an infamous mother,- dragged me through
all the hideous and degrading agonies which must
attend a man bound to a wife at once intemperate and
unchaste.... And I could not rid myself of it by any legal
proceedings:for the doctors now discovered that my
wife was mad-her excesses had prematurely
developed the germs of insanity...(forse aveva
contratto la sifilide)
His marriage to Bertha was arranged for financial reasons by his father, but he
undertook it for Bertha's dark sensual beauty.
He repeatedly asserts her coarseness, "at once intemperate and unchaste," as the central fact of his loathing for her.
Once she is pronounced mad, he has her locked up, and goes forth on a life of sexual adventures, one result of
which has been the child Adèle, daughter of his French mistress.Rochester's story is part Byronic romance, but
it is based on a social and psychological reality: the nineteenth-century loose woman might have sexual
feelings, but the nineteenth-century wife did not and must not; Rochester's loathing of Bertha is described
repeatedly in terms of her physical strength and her violent will-both unacceptable qualities in the nineteenth-
century female, and embodied in a monster.
Impedimento"...
“L'impedimento consiste semplicemente nell'esistenza di
un precedente matrimonio. Mr Rochester ha una moglie
tuttora vivente". A quelle parole pronunciate a bassa vocei

possesso. Firmato: Richard Mason".
Mr. Rochester continued...: 'Bigamy is an ugly wordl-I meant

I now inform you that she is my wife, whom I married fifteen
years ago,- Bertha Mason by name; sister of this resolute
personage... Bertha Mason is mad; and she came of a mad
family;-idiots and manlacs through three generations! Her
mother, the Creole,was both a mad woman and a drunkard!-as I
found out after I had wed the daughter: for they were silent on
family secrets before. Bertha, like a dutiful child, copied her
parent in both points. I had a charming partner-pure, wise,
modest: you can fancy I was a happy man.-1 went through rich
scenes! Oh! my experience has been heavenly,if you only knew
it!...This girl [Jane]... was going to be entrapped into a feigned
union with a defrauded wretch, already bound to a bad, mad,
and embruted partner!

My nerves vibrated to those low-spoken words as they had
never vibrated to thunder-my blood felt their subtle violence as
it had never felt frost or fire: but I was collected, and in no
danger of swooning.I looked at Mr. Rochester: I made him look
at me. His whole face was colourless rock: his eye was both
spark and flint....
Mr. Briggs calmly took a paper from his pocket, and read out in
a sort of official, nasal voice:-
' "I affirm and can prove that on the 20th of October, A.D. (a
date of fifteen years back), Edward Fairfax Rochester,of

Rochester provides a critical appraisal of the relationship between the two.Bertha is described as big,
corpulent, virile, with a "grizzled mane" of hair like an animal's; earlier Jane had seen her as resembling "the
foul German spectre." She is the antithesis of Jane,as Mr. Rochester points out.
