OTTAVIA
PERSONAGGI
NERONE.
OTTAVIA.
POPPEA.
SENECA.
TIGELLINO.
ATTO PRIMO
SCENA PRIMA
NERONE, SENECA.
NER. Pace.
NER. Intera
l'avria Neron, se di abborrito nodo
stato non fosse a Ottavia avvinto mai.
NER. Assai
n l'apprend'uomo. Or basti a me, che accorto
mai stanza aver lungi da me...
NER. S.
SENECA Al trono
compagna e al regal talamo tornarla,
forse?...
NER. All'uopo
e tu sei saggio. Or va; di tua virtude,
dir potr mio l'impero: io son frattanto,
l'alunno tu: fa ch'io ti trovi or dunque
docile a me. Non ti minaccio morte;
quel lieve avanzo, onde esser carco estimi,
Taci omai dunque, e va; per me t'adopra.
SCENA SECONDA
NERONE.
SCENA TERZA
NERONE, POPPEA.
NER. Esiglio
lieto troppo, ed incauto, a Ottavia ho scelto.
Intera stassi di Campania al lido
l'armata, in cui recente rimembranza
vive ancor d'Agrippina. Entro quei petti,
di novit desio, piet fallace
della figlia di Claudio, animo fello,
e ria speranza entro quei petti alligna.
Io mal col bando a lei diedi, e peggio
farei quivi lasciandola.
POPPEA Tenerti
dee sollecito tanto omai costei?
qual pi securo? e qual deserta piaggia
POPPEA Intendo;
ben veggo;... io tosto sgombrer...
NER. Io t'amo,
quant'io gi fei; quanto a pi far mi appresto.
Ma tu...
ATTO SECONDO
SCENA PRIMA
POPPEA, TIGELLINO.
POPPEA All'ira
tutto il muove, ben so. Meco ei sdegnossi
del soverchio amor mio poc'anzi; e fero
signor gi favellava a me dal trono.
POPPEA Ti giuro,
se in ci mi servi, che in favore e in possa
nullo fia mai ch'appo Neron ti agguagli.
SCENA SECONDA
TIGELLINO.
SCENA TERZA
NERONE, TIGELLINO.
NER. Tu il vero,
fido interprete mio, per me giurasti.
TIGEL. A te narrarli
niun uomo ard: ma, da tacersi sono,
or che da te repudiata a dritto,
pi consorte non t'? Stavasi in corte
l'indegna ancora; e dividea pur teco
talamo, e soglio; e si usurpava ancora
gli omaggi a donna imperal dovuti;
quando gi in cor fatta ella s'era vile
pi d'ogni vil rea femmina; quand'era
prostituire a citarista infame,
ch'ella adocchiando andava...
NER. ver...
SCENA QUARTA
SCENA QUINTA
NERONE.
 rea
l'ira che in sen contro Poppea nudrisci;
e celasti assai meno altre superbe
tue ricordanze di non veri dritti.
OTTAV. Poppea
meco venirne ella in amarti. Ottiene
NER. Amarmi,
no, tu non puoi.
SCENA SETTIMA
OTTAVIA.
ATTO TERZO
SCENA PRIMA
OTTAVIA, SENECA.
OTTAV. Vieni, o Seneca, vieni; almen ch'io pianga
con te: niun con chi piangere mi resta.
OTTAV. Ma invano
tu speri. Nulla avermi tolto estima
Neron, fin ch'ei la fama a me non toglie.
Tutto soggiace al voler suo: te stesso
tu perderesti, e indarno: ah! per te pure
tremar mi fai. Ma in salvo, ver, che posta
da lunga serie di virtudi omai
la tua fama: il fosse al par la mia!...
Ma, giovin, donna, infra corrotta corte
cresciuta, oh cielo! esser tenuta io posso
in mille guise egli il pugnal m'immerga,
per me il vederlo d'altra donna amante
il rio dolor, che ogni dolor sorpassa.
OTTAV. Sottrarmi
il puoi tu solo; dalla infamia almeno...
L'infamia! or vedi, onde a me vien: Poppea
bassi amori mi appone.
OTTAV. Oh cielo!
alla reggia appressarsi...
SENECA Nerone;
eccolo, e viene.
SCENA SECONDA
SCENA TERZA
TIGEL. Signor...
OTTAV. Il petto
eccoti inerme: svenami, se il vuoi.
Pur che a te giovi!... Alla infiammata plebe
mostrami spenta: ogni colpevol gioja
rintuzzerai tosto cos. Sol chieggio,
sepolcro avrai. Perch pi indugi? or questo
OTTAV. Avean miei padri regno;
cosa giammai? Pur, se librar te meco
alcun si ardisse, a Ottavia appor potria
gli scambiati mariti? avanzo forse
son io d'un Rufo, o d'un Ottone?
NER. Avanzo
di morte sei, per breve tempo. Omai
del tuo perire, incerto  solo il modo;
all'util tuo. Piet della innocente
illustre donna, amor del giusto, e lungo
tedio d'ingrata vergognosa vita,
parlar mi fanno: ad ascoltar ti muova
tuo interesse, e null'altro.
SCENA SECONDA
NER. In fama
io ti porr, qual merti...
SCENA TERZA
NERONE, POPPEA.
POPPEA Signor, deh! frena il furor tuo...
NER. Ai preghi
del tuo consorte arrenditi; o i comandi
del tuo signor rispetta. A me non puoi,
neppur tu stessa, toglierti; n il puote
umana forza, se il mio impero pria
non m' tolto, e la vita. All'ira immensa
SCENA QUARTA
TIGEL. Ma tutti
convincer puoi. L'ultima strage questa,
ove adoprar l'arte omai debbi.
NER. Vanne,
poich' pur forza; e le intentate accuse
caldamente prosiegui. Andiam, Poppea;
vendetta avrem di quest'iniqua. Intanto
il di verr, che compier mie vendette,
pi mestier non mi fia l'altrui soccorso.
ATTO QUINTO
SCENA PRIMA
OTTAVIA.
OTTAVIA, SENECA.
SENECA Intatta,
godi, pur sempre la innocenza tua.
Le tue tante virt d'alcun lor raggio
infiammato a virtude hanno i pi bassi
servili cori. Infra martri atroci,
Marzia fra loro era da udirsi: in fermo
viril libero aspetto (e da far onta
a noi schiavi tremanti) in Neron fitti
gl'imperterriti sguardi, ora a vicenda
Tigellino, or Nerone, ad alta voce
mentitor empj iva nomando: e piena
di generosa rabbia, inni solenni
di tua santa onest cantando, salda
ella ai tormenti, da forte spirava.
SENECA Oh cielo!
SCENA TERZA
TIGELLINO, OTTAVIA, SENECA.
TIGEL. Aniceto.
TIGEL. Ei forse
l'armata, ond' duce in Miseno, a un cenno
tuo ribellar non prometteati?--E dirti
deggio, a qual patto?
TIGEL. Impone
OTTAV. ... Troppo ei mi dona.--
Vanne, a lui torna: e pregalo, ch'ei venga
qu con Poppea. Narrar vo' solo ad essi
i miei tanti delitti: altro non chieggo:
tanto impetrami; va. Dell'onta mia
lieta a gioir venga Poppea; l'aspetto.
SCENA QUARTA
OTTAVIA, SENECA.
OTTAV. A vile
tanto mi hai tu, che d'immutabil voglia
non mi estimi capace? Or, non forse
morte il minor dei minacciati danni?
Ch'altro mi resta? di'.--Tu taci?
OTTAV. Tu piangi?...
Me dall'infamia e dai martr, deh! salva:
da morte, il vedi, ogni sperarlo vano.
Salvami, deh! pietade il vuole...
SENECA E quando...
io pur volessi,... in s brev'ora,... or... come?...
Nerone...
SENECA Me misero!...
SCENA QUINTA
NER. E donde?...
SENECA E puossi
deluder guardia; e il fu la tua. Gli Dei
scampo ai giusti non niegano.
OTTAV. Mi uccide
il tosco in breve; e tu il vedrai: pietoso
ecco chi 'l diede; anzi, a dir ver, gliel tolsi.
nol celo. Mira: in questa gemma stava
la mia salvezza. Di tua fede in pegno,
il d delle mortali nozze nostre,
tal gemma tu darmi dovevi...
NER.
Iniquo,
tu l'ordisti; ma or ora...
SCENA SESTA
