Mai come negli ultimi anni tanto si è detto e scritto
attorno ai ghiacciai e alle loro variazioni, con una
curva di crescente interesse probabilmente lontana dal
suo apice. La causa prima di questa “euforia glaciolo-
gica” è nelle rapide e preoccupanti mutazioni che, da
alcuni decenni, interessano questi “corpi” naturali.
Così, quella che per un paio di secoli è stata una pas-
sione scientifica di pochi, è oggi divenuta una necessità
di conoscenza non priva (in ogni senso) di pesanti
implicazioni economiche per molti. Il passaggio del
ghiacciaio da oggetto scientifico a elemento di dibattito
pubblico ha portato con sé non poche inesattezze,
grossolani errori, quando non vere e proprie mistifica-
zioni. È facile rinvenirne lampantissimi esempi. Basti
per tutti ricordare come in tempi non lontani un vice-
ministro della Repubblica Italiana abbia sostenuto pub-
blicamente il ruolo fondamentale svolto dall’accresciuta
frequentazione umana dei ghiacciai (e dagli impianti e
dagli alberghi, che “cinquant’anni fa non c’erano”) nel
determinarne la contrazione, secondo la singolare for-
mula de “l’uomo-termosifone ambulante”…(1).
D’altro canto, altrettanto indiscutibili appaiono,
almeno in alcuni contesti nazionali, le difficoltà incon-
trate dal mondo scientifico, in ciò non privo peraltro di
responsabilità, nel divulgare i risultati acquisiti attra-
verso strumenti e linguaggi adeguati. Gli esiti di tali
“mancanze” sono tra l’altro palesi nella buona circola-
zione che incontrano - anche presso qualche ambiente
scientifico o pseudo-tale (2) - tesi palesemente infondate
e strampalati elenchi di ghiacciai in presunta avanzata
(la più parte dei quali, ovviamente, in netto e prolun-
gato ritiro). Anche in questo ambito il ruolo di rapida
amplificazione delle informazioni svolto dalla “rete”
comporta rischi di altrettanto veloce disinformazione.
Pur tralasciando tali “anomalie”, tutt’altro che infre-
quenti, e con le sole eccezioni rappresentate da pochi
apparati glaciali fortemente “mediatizzati”, è rara la
diffusione oltre-frontiera delle informazione raccolte
dai vari gruppi di ricerca e monitoraggio attivi nei
diversi paesi, almeno al di fuori degli stretti ambiti
accademici (3). Assai di frequente, poco si conosce
delle dinamiche che coinvolgono ghiacciai siti solo
qualche centinaio di metri oltre la linea di confine, sul
versante “estero” di una stessa catena montuosa, per
non dire di quelli “accasati” un poco più lontano o
addirittura oltre-oceano. Così, la portata specifica della
deglaciazione in corso all’incirca da un secolo sulle

ing with glaciers and their variations has increased
exponentially, though we may be far away from having
reached the peak yet. The main reason for such
“glacial frenzy” is obviously related to the rapid and
worrysome changes that have occurred over the past
few decades.
What was a scientific interest shared by a handful
of selected specialists in the XIX and XX century has
now captured the headlines of all communication
media, with a growing number of people debating the
economical implications of such changes. The transi-
tion of glaciers from a scientific topic to a matter of
public concern, has been exploited both by the media
and political factions; as a consequence, the event,
rather than being shown in its true contest, has often
been misrepresented and sometimes grossly manipu-
lated. There is no need of sophisticated laboratory
equipment to detect such false conclusions: not long
ago an Italian vice-minister claimed that the increase
of people on and near the glaciers (in addition to
hotels and ski-lifts not existing 50 years ago) was the
cause of the widespread shrinking, thus equating man
to a wandering heater… (1).
We also have to acknowledge that, at least in a few
countries, there are obvious signs that the scientific
community has failed, sometimes willingly, to present
their results through a proper choice of language and
media. This is true even for such “simple” data as the
annual or medium-term variations of surface and vol-
ume of glaciers. Such misrepresentations are widely
circulated, together with groundless theories or odd
list of advancing glaciers (most of them are in fact
undergoing a well documented, continuous shrink-
age); many are even boasting the support of some sci-
entific or pseudo-scientific bodies (2). A significant role
is also played by the net, acting as a fast disseminator
of both true and false communications.
Even discounting such “anomalies”, much too com-
mon nowadays, and excluding a handful of well publi-
cised glaciers, the circulation of data gathered by
research or monitoring groups in the various coun-
tries rarely crosses the national boundaries, being lim-
ited to very few academic circuits (3). Very often, little
is known about the dynamics of glaciers just beyond
the country border or located on the opposite slope
of massifs shared by two countries, not to say of gla-

incerti e valori indefiniti: spesso anche fra quanti, sem-
pre più numerosi e competenti, fanno del glacialismo
un oggetto di passione e studio.
Tali considerazioni hanno ispirato questa raccolta di
scritti, accanto all’evidenza della crescente centralità
ambientale ed economica che le disponibilità glaciali
detengono. Ruoli che si esercitano a livello globale
come a quello delle tante declinazioni regionali: con il
contributo fornito all’innalzamento del livello dei
mari, con il ruolo svolto sulle portate dei fiumi e
quindi sulle disponibilità idriche, con la diretta frui-
zione turistica e sportiva dell’ambiente glaciale e degli
ambienti ad esso sottesi, con le generali trasforma-
zioni del paesaggio montano che le variazioni (in
negativo) delle aree glacializzate portano con sé.
Rispetto al vasto e variegato patrimonio glaciale
della Terra, e dei problemi in gioco, quello qui presen-
tato è, come si vedrà, un panorama tutt’altro che esau-
stivo. Non è però escluso che, a partire da questa ini-
ziativa, il quadro abbia ad ampliarsi in futuro …
Per intanto, si propone qui un “viaggio” (comunque
non breve) in alcune aree del Pianeta, con contributi
in qualche caso di sintesi, data l’ampiezza che il glacia-
lismo assume in talune regioni (Argentina, Canada,
Cile, Islanda, Italia, Nuova Zelanda), in altri più anali-
tici, a toccare le vicende di quelle poche unità glaciali
ancora presenti nel rilievo di certi paesi (Germania,
Slovenia, Spagna) o di loro specifici settori montuosi
(Bolivia, Francia pirenaica, Lombardia). In tutti i casi,
la lettura delle forti variazioni in atto è posta in rela-
zione con le cause, eminentemente climatiche, che ne
sono all’origine.
I limiti temporali entro cui si sviluppano gli studi qui
presentati vanno dal termine della Piccola Età Glaciale
a oggi, variamente declinati in ciascun settore anche
in ragione della diversa disponibilità di materiali di
base a cui i ricercatori hanno accesso.
Sotto il profilo storico, quindi, parliamo di analisi di
medio-lungo periodo, capaci di restituirci l’ampiezza
di una metamorfosi, probabilmente lontana dall’es-
sersi esaurita, che sta radicalmente mutando il paesag-
gio di estesi settori della superficie terrestre. Anche in
quest’ottica ci è parso opportuno sollecitare un contri-
buto di Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, il cui “sguardo
multisecolare” permette di apprezzare con maggior
profondità la portata di tali cambiamenti.
Tenuto conto di queste premesse, il fine che ci
siamo proposti di allargare almeno di un poco l’an-
golo geografico delle nostre conoscenze sull’argo-
mento può forse considerarsi acquisito. Quello di una
maggiore sensibilità sulla portata globale dei cambia-
menti in atto e di una più forte richiesta di divulga-
zione delle conoscenze resta da conseguire.
Anche in questo senso, la risposta dei lettori potrà
fornire stimoli e suggerimenti utili.

ferent continent.
Thus the purport of the deglaciation affecting this
planet since the second half of the XIX century is
often difficult to grasp or not fully appreciated; often
this is true even for those few people, ever more
numerous and skilled, that make the study of glaciers
their serious hobby or profession.
Such considerations, in addition to the growing evi-
dence of the environmental and economic values
attached to Earth’s glaciers, have prompted us to col-
lect these papers. Glaciers have both global and
regional influences: they contribute to the growing
rise of sea-levels; they determine river run-off and
water availability, whatever its final use; they attract
both tourists and sport lovers to glacial areas and
nearby environment; they contribute to change the
mountain scenary, through their receding ice masses.
Considering the size and variety of the glacial patri-
mony held by Earth’s mountains, what we are present-
ing here is far from being fully comprehensive. We do
hope, however, that this initiative will trigger addi-
tional developments in the near future.
For the moment, we are proposing a long journey
through selected areas of the World. Some contribu-
tions, owing to the extent of glacialism in some Coun-
tries (Argentina, Canada, Chile, Iceland, Italy, New
Zealand) will be somewhat synthetic; other papers will
be more specific as they analyze either the situation
of the few remaining glaciers (Germany, Slovenia,
Spain) or single mountain ranges (Bolivia, French
Pyrennees, Lombardy). In all cases, the strong varia-
tions being measured are put in relation with the
causes, mainly climatic, that originated them.
The period analyzed by the various studies spans
the from the Little Ice Age to the present, though this
may vary from one mountain sector to the other,
based upon the availability of data the Authors had
access to.
From a historical point of view, we are dealing with
medium-to-long-term analyses, capable of conveying
the magnitude of a metamorphosis which, though
probably far from its final evolution, is rapidly altering
the landscape of vast areas of our planet. Such rea-
sons have compelled us to ask a contribution to
Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, whose age-old recon-
struction allows us to fully appreciate the extent of
the intervening changes.
Considering such premises, our aim to broaden,
even by a little, the geographical span of our knowl-
edge may have been achieved. Still to be addressed are
the need to increase people’ sensitivity to the global
changes we are experiencing and actions to ease the
dissemination of knowledge.
To this effect, the feedback from the readers could
provide useful suggestions and new stimuli.

tist, 2465, 16 aprile 2005. L’autore vi ha sostenuto come
“since 1980, there has been an advance of more than 55%
of the 625 mountain glaciers under observation by the
World Glacier Monitoring group in Zurich”. Dando prova
di invidiabile professionalità, George Mombiot giornalista
de The Guardian, ha ricostruito la complessa e non casuale
origine di questo falso, peraltro liquidato dagli stessi studiosi
dell’Università di Zurigo come “un’enorme bufala”. Ovvia-
mente, come molte altre, anche questa “bufala” non ha
però mancato di fare proseliti.

Bellamy “Glaciers are cool” published on the New Scientist,
2465 (April 16, 2005). The author claims that “since 1980,
there has been an advance of more than 55% of the 625
mountain glaciers under observation by the World Glacier
Monitoring group in Zurich”. Showing a remarkable
professionalism, George Mambiot of “The Guardian” was
able to reconstruct the complex and not fortuitous origin of
such false statements. Despite this and the dismissal of the
article as a colossal fake by the team of the Zurich University,
Bellamy’s work has been quoted and referred to by a number
of interested parties.

Monitoring Service of Zurich (CH), publishing data and
studies covering Earth’s glaciers such as the 5-year
“Fluctuations of Glaciers”, the “Glaciers Mass Balance
Bulletin” and the well-known 1989 “World Glaciers
