La passerella sopraelevata
Bassishaw Highwalk a Londra.
The pedway Bassishaw
Highwalk in London.
Architecture needs time. It takes the profession a long time to pick up on change and changing lifestyles. But
when it does, it often does so in spectacular fashion. Now that walking is once again part of many people’s
everyday routine, for example, there has been an abundance of pedestrian walkway projects, including sev-
eral bridges. The world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge opened just under a year ago in the Swiss
town of Zermatt (a modern, steel version of a Tibetan bridge that is 494 metres in length and hangs 85 metres
above the ground). And in China’s Hebei province, a 488-metre, glass-bottomed bridge was recently unveiled
that is 218 metres high. It seems unlikely that there will be anything so dramatic in Britain any time soon, but
a project has recently begun in London to renovate and reuse the City’s elevated walkways, built after World
War Two to separate pedestrians from road traffic. Never very popular in their day, and therefore often left
uncompleted, they are now enjoying something of a revival. After all, they only date back 60 years.

serre luminose e carceri anguste.
fra corpo e paesaggio, mestieri e lettere dell’alfabeto.
senman, Frank O. Gehry, Daniel Libeskind e Zaha Hadid.
L’uomo bionico vivrà in ecosistemi
artificiali dove l’architettura potrebbe diventare superflua. (Claudia Gallo)
All architecture was developed around and for the human body: from houses and
palaces to light-filled greenhouses and cramped prison cells. This book is the re-
sult of thirty years of research by architect Marcello Sèstito, who explored in great
detail for presences of the human body in architecture. To do this, he brought to-
gether symbols and suggestions from all possible cultures. But what makes this
gallery of impressions particularly precious is the author’s taste for the bizarre:
anthropomorphic architecture, erotic inspirations, analogies between the human
body and landscapes, crafts, the letters of the alphabet. Sèstito believes that the
traditional body-architecture analogy is lost in contemporary culture, which
seems to prefer the mental sphere, through the work of architects like Peter Eisen-
man, Frank O. Gehry, Daniel Libeskind and Zaha Hadid. The author leaves us with
the image of a future in which we will no need external devices, because the post-
human body will have all it needs inside it. Bionic man will live in artificial eco-
systems in which architecture might even become superfluous.

tessuto residenziale circostante. I piani, le aperture e gli ambienti
si compongono in modo organico, dando luogo a uno spazio com-
plessivo poco gerarchico e fortemente articolato.

I disegni
centro strutturale, aprendosi in doppie altezze, patii e sfon-

ci siamo preposti.
de città contiene elementi critici in ogni luogo e analogamen-
