FOREWORD
The appárent resemblance between the guitar and the
lute is deceptive and may lead to misconceptions. Many
guitarists, either prompted by enthusiasm for their instru-
ment or hampered by ignorance, imagine that the guitar
« swallows » the Iute whole and consigns it to the museum;
this is far from the truth. Apart from tonal quality, which
must always remain a matter of personal taste, no question
of superiority on the part of either instrument arises, nor
wouId this be the place for such considerations. During the
course of musical history the guitar has in some ways sur-
passed the lute- but without acquiring the capacity to replace
it completely. In the period of its greatest glory the Iute
was an integral part in the thinking of great composers,
used in simple textures and in the spinning of elaborate
contrapuntal webs; it was in fact relatively more important
than the guitar is today. By the time the Iute had, toward
the end of the 18th century, lost its way musically and had
suffocated under the deadweight of its own structural com-
plexity, it had attracted a literature of a richness and impor-
tance that are now being rediscovered. This legacy is
aestheticaIly delightful and historically important as a mi-
crocosm of the development and musical practices of the
times.
Two main problems confront the transcriber of Iute tabla-
tures to the guitar:
"(I) In order to preserve correct voice-leading it is
sometimes necessary to retune the third string of the
guitar to F-sharp, thus reproducing the pitch spacing of Iute
tuning. Where this has appeared necessary to me, I have
fingered the music on a basis of this scordatura, conside-
ring musical fidelity to be more important than the unfami-
liarity of this tuning to most guitarists. The user may accept
or reject my suggestions and may re-finger the notation on
a basis of normal guitar tuning if he wishes.
(H) The presence of extra bass strings (diapasons) on
the Iute gives a greater range in the nut position than the
guitar possesses; the direct translation of tablature to the
fingerboard of the guitar often leads to impossible situations.
To ignore these extra basses would be musically unthinkable,
to rewrite the notes one octave higher would in many cases
be musically unacceptable. In such instances it is necessary
to select a new key, moving the music to a higher position
on the fingerboard of the guitar in order to produce more
« room » at the lower end of the gamut. This too creates
fresh problems since the original relationship between fin-
gering and musical content is lost and must be reptaced by
another that is at least acceptable. A wholly satisfactory
solution is not available in every case but the best available
does at least fulfil the main object of this edition, viz. to
provide a playable version that will enable the guitarist to
experience the richness of this wonderful music.
With regard to the manner of performance there are
matters that remain open to conjecture; there are however
others where little or no doubt remains:
(I) In Iute music, especiaIly that of the character of
most of the pieces in the Varietie, the over-riding concern
was in the realisation of a musical texture. Maximum atten-

è ingannevole e potrebbe generare concetti errati. Molti
chitarristi, sia perché spinti dall'entusiasmo per il loro
strumento, sia per pura ignoranza, immaginano che la
chitarra abbia potuto togliere di mezzo l'intera /amiglia
dei liuti, consegnandola al museo; ciò però è ben lungi
dal vero. A parte la qualità timbrica, che dovrebbe sempre
restare qualcosa che riguardi il gusto personale, non
sorge una questione di superiorità da parte di uno dei
due strumenti e neppure si potrebbero /are qui tali con-
siderazioni. Nel corso della storia musicale la chitarra ha
in qualche modo superato il liuto - - senza acquisire la
capacità di sostituirlo completamente. Nell'epoca della
sua maggior gloria il liuto costituiva una parte integrale
nel pensiero dei grandi compositori, essendo usato sia in
semplici che in elaborate tessiture contrappuntistiche; esso
era in~atti relativamente più importante di quanto non lo
sia oggi la chitarra. Quando poi il liuto, verso la fine
del 18 ° secolo, musicalmente parlando, si perse per strada
e so//ocò sotto il peso morto della propria complessità
strutturale, aveva attratto una letteratura la cui ricchezza
e importanza si stanno ora riscoprendo. Questo retaggio
è esteticamente piacevole e storicamente importante quale
microcosmo dello sviluppo e della pratica musicale di allora.
I principali problemi che il trascrittore di intavolature
lmtistiche deve a//rontare sono due:
( I ) Per poter mantenere la corretta concatenazione
delle voci, a volte è necessario accordare la terza corda
della chitarra in FA diesis, riproducendo in tal modo ~li
intervalli e l'intonazione dell'accordatura del Euto. Là
dove ciò mi è apparso necessario, ho diteggiato la musica
in base a tale scordatura, considerando che la /edeltà
musicale sia più importante dell'inesperienza della maggior
parte dei chitarristi con questa accordatura. Il suonatore
se lo desidera può accettare o respingere i miei suggeri-
menti, riditeggiando la musica in base alla normale accor-
datura della chitarra.
( I I ) I bassi supplettivi (volanti) del liuto danno
alla parte grave della sua gamma un'estensione più grande
di quella della chitarra; la trascrizione diretta dall'intavo-
latura alla tastiera della chitarra spesso cr<a delle situa-
zioni impossibili. Musicalmente, sarebbe una cosa impen-
sabile ignorare tali bassi supplettivi e in molti casi inac-
cettabile trasportare le note all'ottava più alta. In tali
casi è necessario scegliere una nuova tonalità, trasportando
la musica a una posizione più acuta della tastiera della
chitarra, per ottenere maggior « spazio » ai limiti gravi
del registro. Ciò però crea nuovi problemi perché la rela-
zione iniziale /ra la diteggiatura ed il contenuto musicale
deve essere sostituita da un'altra che sia almeno accette-
bile. Una soluzione del tutto soddis/acente non esistendo
in ogni caso, io scopo di questa edizione è quello di
presentare almeno la migliore, una versione cioè che o//ra
al chitarrista la possibilità di apprezzare la ricchezza di
questa splendida musica.
Per ciò che riguarda l'interpretazione, vi sono questioni
che rimangono aperte a varie congetture; tuttavia per
alcune i dubbi o non esistono o sono irrilevanti:
(I) Nella musica per liuto, soprattutto quella del
carattere della maggior parte dei brani delle Varietie, la
preoccupazione preponderante era quella della realizza-

tablature but it may be deduced - this is one of the editorial
responsibilites of the transcriber.
(II) Lutenists were not concerned with «special
effects » and both harmonics and étou//ée would be anach-
ronistic if imposed on this music. The left-hand legato
(hammers and snaps), beloved of guitarists, was unknown
to lutenists as a part of passage work. No legato is, therefore,
indicated in this edition and the guitarist who introduces
it, even Jr/the execution of cadential ornaments, does so
on his own responsibility.
(III) It is implicit in (I) and (II) that clarity is a pri-
mary objective in the phying of lute music and this, in the
absence of unequivocal contemporary evidence, must deter-
mine the speed at which any piece is played. The problem
is less acute in the pavanes and /antasias, which are by
nature more stately than the other categories included in
the Varietie but, in general, the speed should be determined
by individual ability to execute the most rapid passages with
darity and certainty. There is little use in establishing a
brisk rate of movement at the outset if it cannot be main-
tained in the divisions. Further, it was the practice of lute-
nists to ornament the music in extempore fashion and, thus,
to increase its complexity and difficulty of execution. It is
probahte" that even Dowland himself did not play many
pieces at the speed attained by the best modern virtuosi,
though he might weU have smiled upon such brilliance
had he heard it.
(IV) Even on the smaUer fingerboard of the lute there
are passages where an extended position of the left hand
makes it extremely difficult (or, occasionally, even impossi-
ble) to preserve the full duration of the notes in every part;
these are aggravated on the larger fingerboard of the guitar.
Such problems were recognised and the didactic preamble
in the Varietie itself states clearly that, in such situations,
the bass notes should be held even though it become neces-
sary to sacrifice the continuity of higher parts. The bass
notes are thus to be held even when stretching on the
« rack » enforces the release of higher ones; complete truth
must yield to expedience.
(V) The position of the right hand, as clearly described
by Dowland, did not permit the tonal variations available
to the guitarist through change in the distance between the
point of striking and the bridge. Any use of tonal variation
is thus not authentic, no matter how convincingly applied.
This factor must be subject to personal sensitivity." Tonal
variation can add to interest and may be used to emphasise
changes in texture but it is a modern imposition. Whilst
the evidence clearly shows that Dowland did not use this
resource, it remains impossible to say what his reaction to
it might have been.
The original tablature of the Varietie o / L u t e Lessons is
riddled with errors of every conceivable kind and, although
I ",vas able to correct many of these through a knowledge
of the musical practices of the period, I realised that many
could be eradicated only through the exercise of highly
specialised knowledge of, inter alla, alternative sources of

( I I ) I liutisti non si preoccupavano degli effetti spe,
ciali ed i suoni armonici ed i pizzicati (note smorzate o
stoppate) sarebbero anacronistici se /ossero introdotti in
tale musica. Le legature (ascendenti e discendenti), pre-
dilette dai chitarristi, erano sconosciute ai liutisti. Perciò
in questa edizione non esistono legature ed il chitarrista
che le introduce, sia pure nell'esecuzione di ornamenti
cadenzali, Io/a sotto la propria responsabilità.
( I I I ) Nell'I e II è implicito che nell'esecuzione di
musica liutistica l'essenza principale sia la chiarezza ed è
quest'ultima che deve determinare la velocità con la quale
si esegue un pezzo, in assenza di una inequivocabile
testimonianza contemporanea. Il problema è meno im-
portante p~r le pavane e le fantasie che, per la loro
natura, sono più maestose delle altre categorie comprese
nelle Varietie, ma, generalmente, la velocità dovrebbe
essere determinata'dalla capacità individuale d'esecuzione
dei passaggi più rapidi con chiarezza e sicurezza. Non
serve iniziare una musica in tempo vivace se poi non
sarà mantenuto. Inoltre, i liutisti usavano ornare con
abbellimenti la musica in modo estemporaneo, accrescen-
do la complessità e di/ficoltà dell'esecuzione. ~ probabile
che lo stesso Dowland non eseguisse molti pezzi alla
velocità raggiunta dai migliori virtuosi moderni, benché
avrebbe ,Corse sorriso se avesse potuto ascoltare tali bril-
lanti esecuzioni.
( I V ) Anche sulla tastiera del liuto (più corta di quel-
la della chitarra) vi sono dei passaggi in cui una posi-
zione estesa della mano sinistra rende estremamente di//i-
cile (e, talvolta, addirittura impossibile) mantenere l'intera
durata delle note in o#,ni voce; tali passaggi diventano
ancora più di//icili sulla tastiera della chitarra. Questi
problemi erano riconosciuti e nella stessa pre~azione didat-
tica delle Varietie si dice chiaramente che, in tali situa-
zioni, le note del basso dovrebbero essere tenute anche
se ciò rende necessario sacrificare la continuità delle voci
più acute. Le note del basso dunque debbono essere tenu-
te anche quando il divaricamento (sullo « strumento di
tortura ») costringa l'abbandono di quelle più acute; la
verità assoluta deve cedere all'espediente.
( V ) La posizione della mano destra, chiaramente de-
scritta da Dowland, non permetteva i mutamenti timbrici
di cui il chitarrista dispone col variare la distanza tra
il punto di contatto con la corda ed il ponticello. Perciò,
indi•endentemente dal quanto possa sembrare applicata in
modo convincente, qualsiasi varietà timbrica non è auten-
tica. Tale [attore deve essere soggetto alla sensibilità per-
sonale. La varietà timbrica può rendere più interessante
e potrebbe essere usata en[aticamente in cambiamenti della
tessitura, ma rimane sempre un'imposizione moderna. Ben-
ché evidentemente Dowland non [osse ricorso a tale
usanza, resta impossibile dire quale sarebbe stata la sua
reazione a tale proposito.
L'intavolatura originale delle Varietie of Lute-Lessons
è spesso enigmatica in quanto zeppa di errori d'ogni
specie e, benché abbia potuto correggere molti di questi
grazie alle nozioni della pratica dell'epoca, mi sono reso
conto che molti avrebbero potuto essere eliminati sol-
tanto attraverso una cognizione altamente specializzata,

Virtually nothing has been omitted from the original
Isave the errors) and where it has been necessary to change
the octave in which a note or passage appears, it is without
harm to the sense of the music. Since guitar music is
already heavily burdened with caballistic symbols, and since
a facsimile of the original is readily obtainable from Schott &
Co. Ltd of London, I decided not to add to the task of
the user by indications of editorial changes in text. Had Lt
been possible to consult the original only in a museum or
library, the situation would have been quite different.

dell'originale è /acilmente ottenibile dalla Schott & Co.
di Londra, ho deciso di non aggiungere nel testo i cam-
biamenti editoriali per non accrescere i problemi del
suonatore. La situazione sarebbe stata completamente di-
versa se si /osse potuto consultare l'originale soltanto nei
musei o nelle biblioteche.
