100 MELODIC STUDIES
IN TRANSPOSITION
for Trumpet and other related Brass Instruments
ER, 2502 RICORDIPREFACE
‘Whoever has completed the study of theory or solfege knows that transposition, in musical terms,
means the changing of a composition from one tonality to another.
We therefore maintain that it is superfluous to explain in detail the technique of transposition
to the student if he has already studied the seven clefs, intervals, tonalities, ete, which have a great re-
lationship with this material.
However, for the untrained, the following remarks may be helpful :
ishing to be proficient in transposing with the trumpet, we must keep in mind the key of the
instrument itself, which will determine whether we raise or lower the notes of a composition. If,
for example, with the Trumpet in B b we wish to perform a part written for Trumpet in C, we will
have to read the original part one whole tone higher than written.
original: Trumpet in C transposed: Trumpet in Bb
= SS
If the same notes are written for Trumpet in Eb, they sound a minor 3“ higher than written,
but to be played with a Trumpet in Bb they must be transposed a perfect 4" higher (one whole tone
higher than sounds).

The following tables treat in more concise format those transpositions that are useful for
Trumpets in B b, E b, and F, those most commonly used.Transposition for the Trumpet in Bb

In the Baroque and Classic period, before the development of valves, natural trumpets and
horns were used. In a work then, often several natural trumpets of different keys, o instruments with
additional crooks, were used to encompass the tonalities in the work. Early editions contain parts for
such instruments which are no longer generally in use. It is therefore especially important to learn
the transpositions in reading these early editions. Since these were most frequently published in Ger-
many, Italy and Franee, it will be helpful to be able to refer to the names of the keys for trumpets
in those languages.

Most professional trumpet players transpose Trumpet in A parts by adding 7 flats, making the
following adjustments; if a note is already flatted, it becomes a double-flat ; if a note has a sharp,
it becomes a natural.
‘The Trumpet in D is used for Bach's B minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, etc., Ravel’s Bolero
(Sometimes, if a player has only a Trumpet in Eb, he transposes using the soprano clef adding 5
sharps or, without changing clef, adds 7 flats to the notation).
The Trumpet in F or the high (Sopranino) Trumpet in B 6 is customarily used to play the Bran-
denburg Concerto No. 2 by Bach. Some players have used the Trumpet in F or Trumpet in G to
play Bach’s Magnificat.
‘The Alto or Contralto Trumpet in Eb has been employed by Wagner, Rimsky Korsakoff, Rich-
ard Strauss and others
Wagner and R. Strauss have scored for the Bass Trumpet in Bb.

The following studies will be very helpful when used in conjuction with symphonic orchestral
literature.
