Premessa
Premise
LAssociazione culturale Officine Incisorie, in

collaborazione con la Biblioteca Statale del
Monumento Nazionale di Grottaferrata (Roma) , in
occasione del ventennale dellistituzione della
Giornata Mondiale del Libro e del diritto dautore
23 Aprile 2006-2016, organizza per lanno 2016
una Mostra Concorso Internazionale di Ex Libris
presso lAbbazia Greca di San Nilo.
The Cultural Association Officine Incisorie, in

collaboration with the State Library of the National
Monument of Grottaferrata (Rome) , on the
twentieth anniversary of the institution of World
Book and Copyright 2006-2016 April 23, organizes
for the year 2016 an International Ex Libris Show
Competition at the Greek Abbey of Saint Nilus .

Un po di storia
A bit of history
Il Monastero
The Monastery
Il Monastero Esarchico di Santa Maria di

Grottaferrata, detto anche Abbazia Greca di San
Nilo, stato fondato nel 1004 da un gruppo di
monaci greci provenienti dall'Italia meridionale,
all'epoca bizantina, guidati da S. Nilo di Rossano,
capo carismatico e personalit spirituale di primo
piano del suo tempo.
I monaci di questa vetusta Abbazia sono Cattolici di
rito
Bizantino-Greco
e
rappresentano
la Congregazione
d'Italia
dei
Monaci
Basiliani, istituzione creata nella Chiesa Cattolica
per riunire i monasteri di rito Bizantino presenti
nell'Italia meridionale.
Attualmente l'Abbazia Greca di Grottaferrata
l'ultimo dei numerosi Monasteri Bizantini che nel
medioevo erano diffusi in tutta lItalia meridionale
e nella stessa Roma. Costituisce inoltre un unicum
in quanto, fondato cinquanta anni prima dello
Scisma che port alla separazione delle Chiese di
Roma e Costantinopoli, sempre stato in
comunione con il Vescovo di Roma, pur
conservando il rito Bizantino-Greco e la tradizione
monastica orientale delle origini.
The Exarchic Monastery of Santa Maria in

Grottaferrata, also known as the Greek Abbey of
Saint Nilus, was founded in 1004 by a group of
monks from Calabria led by St. Nilus of Rossano, a
charismatic leader and a very important figure of
his time. When St. Nilus, the monks' spiritual
father, died shortly after founding the Abbey, St.
Bartholomew the Younger, his favourite disciple
and cofounder of the monastery, assumed their
leadership.
The monks who follow the teachings of St. Nilus
and St. Bartholomew still live and work within the
walls of this ancient Abbey. The monks
are Catholics of the Byzantine-Greek rite and
belong to the Order of Basilian Monks, established
by the Catholic Church for all Byzantine-rite
monasteries in Italy.
Today, Grottaferrata is the last of the many
Byzantine-Greek monasteries that dotted Sicily,
southern Italy and Rome itself in the Middle Ages.
It is also unique in that, having been founded fifty
years before the Great Schism that divided
Catholics and Orthodox, it remained in communion
with the Church of Rome while preserving the
Byzantine rite and monastic tradition of its
founders.

The Library
Gi s. Nilo esercitava l'arte del calligrafo con abilit

ed eleganza: egli fu anche l'inventore di un proprio
sistema di abbreviazioni (tachigrafia) ed
all'origine di una particolare scuola di scrittura, la
scuola 'niliana'. Di mano di s. Nilo si conservano tre
manoscritti contenenti scritti monastico-patristici.
St. Nilus was a skilful calligrapher and practised his

art with ability and elegance: he was also the
inventor of a special abbreviation system
(tachygraphy) and gave rise to a peculiar writing
school, the 'nilian' school. Three manuscripts
written personally by St. Nilus are preserved: they
contain some monastic writings of the patristic
age.

Anche alcuni dei suoi monaci erano scribi e

continuarono ad esserlo fino a tutto il XIII sec.
producendo essenzialmente manoscritti liturgici e,
in minor misura, ascetici.
Si form cos, con l'aggiunta di manoscritti
acquistati ed ereditati, il nucleo pi antico della
biblioteca.
Nel corso dei secoli la biblioteca sub varie
vicissitudini. Molti manoscritti antichi finirono a
Roma (biblioteche Vaticana e Angelica), ma molti
ne furono anche acquistati, tra i quali una preziosa
copia del poema epico bizantino Digenis Akritas (X
sec.). Nella seconda met del XVI sec. ebbe inizio
un nuovo periodo di produzione di manoscritti.
La biblioteca possiede anche un alto numero di rari
palinsesti, antichi manoscritti in pergamena nei
quali la primitiva scrittura stata grattata via per
fare posto ad una seconda, successiva scrittura:
con gli odierni mezzi tecnici possibile leggere di
nuovo la scrittura pi antica e recuperare le scritto
perduto.
Nel 1873 la Biblioteca, insieme a tutti gli edifici
dell'abbazia, venne incamerata dallo Stato italiano
di recente formazione. Attualmente essa conta
circa 500 manoscritti greci ed altrettanti latini,
varie centinaia di incunaboli e cinquecentine e
50.000 libri a stampa.
La comunit monastica, a sua volta, possiede una
sua propria biblioteca, contenente 20.000 volumi.
Some of the disciples of Nilus were scribes too: the

nilian monks went on copying manuscripts until
the end of the XIIIth century; they wrote chiefly
liturgical and, in a lesser extent, ascetical
manuscripts. With the addition of both purchased
and inherited manuscripts the most ancient
nucleus of the library was formed.
During the centuries the library had to suffer from
various vicissitudes. Many manuscripts were
transferred to Roman libraries such as the Vatican
or the Angelica, but many others were bought too:
among the latter a precious copy of the Byzantine
epic Digenis Akritas (Xth cent.). In the second half
of the XVIth century a new period of manuscript
writing began.
The library owns also a good number of rare
palimpsests, i.e of old parchment manuscripts
whose first script has been erased in order to have
the possibility of using the parchment for a new
script: with the modern technical tools it is now
possible to read anew the former script and to
recover the lost work.
In 1873 the library, together with all of the abbey
buildings, was confiscated by the recently formed
Italian State.
The library has at the present time about 500
Greek manuscripts and more or less as many Latin
manuscripts, some hundreds of incunabula and
XVIth century editions, and 50.000 printed books.
The monastic community has a library of its own,
counting about 20.000 books.

La Mostra Concorso aperta a tutti gli artisti

italiani e stranieri, e la partecipazione gratuita.
The Exhibition Competition is open to all Italian

and foreign artists, and participation is free.

Tema: il tema libero, ma deve comunque

ispirarsi a testi o autori letterari di qualsiasi genere
purch di riconosciuto interesse culturale.
Theme: free inspired books and authors, but it

must be inspired by literary texts or authors of any
kind provided to recognized cultural interest.

Numero delle opere: ogni artista pu partecipare

con un massimo di tre opere. Per ogni opera
partecipante devono essere inviati 5 esemplari. Le
opere devono recare sul retro:
anno di esecuzione
tecnica usata
nome, cognome e indirizzo dellartista
opera e/o autore di ispirazione
redatte in una lingua europea (non
Cirillico, Giapponese, Arabo, Cinese).
Number of works: each artist can submit up to

three works. For each participant must be sent by
5 specimens. The works must be endorsed on the
back:
year of execution
technique
name and address of the artist
work and/or writers name of inspiration
written in a European language (not
Cyrillic, Japanese, Arabic, Chinese).

Il formato massimo dellEx Libris non deve

superare la dimensione di cm 14x14. Il formato
della carta non deve superare cm 21x29,7 (A4).

size must not exceed 21x29,7 cm (8.26 x 11.69in)

accettate.
Il pacco dovr essere confezionato con cura in
modo da salvaguardare le stampe e dovr essere
specificata la dicitura non piegare - contiene
stampe di nessun valore commerciale

La giuria, presieduta dal Presidente della

Associazione Officine Incisorie Giovanni Vern e
composta da Linda Aquaro (Officine Incisorie), Ada
Donati (Presidente della Associazione Padre Diego
Donati o.f.m.), Dorotea Licari (Critica darte della
rivista Grafica dArte), Toni Pecoraro (Docente di
tecniche dellincisione allAccademia di Belle Arti di
Bologna), Giuliano Santini (Direttore del centro
artistico Kaus - Urbino), selezioner le opere da
pubblicare in catalogo. Saranno individuati i 10 ex
libris finalisti, da premiare con menzione speciale
e stampa calcografica a tiratura limitata realizzata
per levento.
Il primo classificato si aggiudicher, oltre al nome
citato nella rivista Grafica dArte, una mostra
personale di Incisione da tenersi nellanno 2017
presso uno degli spazi espositivi del circuito di
Officine Incisorie.
Sia ai 10 finalisti che al vincitore sar consegnato il
catalogo della mostra.
The jury, chaired by the President of Association

Officine Incisorie Giovanni Vern and composed by
Linda Aquaro (Officine Incisorie), Ada Donati
(President Association Padre Diego Donati o.f.m.),
Dorotea Licari (Art Critic of the Magazine Grafica
DArte), Toni Pecoraro (Teacher Engraving
Techniques at Bologna Fine Arts Academy),
Giuliano Santini (Director of the arts center Kaus
Urbin), will select the works to be published in the
catalog. They will be selected 10 finalists
bookplates, to award with special mention and a
chalcographic printing a limited edition made for
the event.
The winner will win, in addition to the name
mentioned in the magazine Grafica dArte, an
exhibition of engraving to be held in the year 2017
at one of the exhibition spaces of the circuit
Officine Incisorie.
Both the 10 finalists the winner will receive the
exhibition catalog.
Il concorso si concluder con la mostra degli exlibris partecipanti, presso i locali dellex Stamperia
dellAbbazia di San Nilo di Grottaferrata dal 10 al
17 Settembre 2016.
Verr inoltre realizzato un catalogo in formato
digitale (PDF) che verr distribuito a tutti i
partecipanti della manifestazione.
The competition ends with the exhibition of

bookplates participants, at the premises of the
former Printing Abbey of San Nilo of Grottaferrata
September 10 to 17 in 2016.
It will also be accompanied by a catalog in digital
format (PDF) that will be distributed to all
participants of the event.
