REAR SUSPENSION SYSTEM FOR A BICYCLE
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
This application claims priority to 60/610,273, filed September 15, 2004, which is hereby
incorporated herein by reference.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
a Field of the Invention
This invention is generally related to bicycles, and more particularly, to suspension systems
for rear wheels of bicycles.
b. Background Art
Rear suspension systems are commonly used on bicycles, and are especially common on
‘mountain bikes. Mountain biking is a sport where a rider can encounter rough terrain (such as holes
in the ground, rocks, and the like). Sometimes the rider also jumps the bike over natural or
‘man-made obstacles while riding. The rear suspension system helps to reduce the impact felt by the
rider resulting from forces exerted on a rear wheel when traveling over rough terrain or when
Jumping the bicycle. When impact forces act on the rear wheel, the rear suspension system allows
the rear wheel to be displaced relative to the bicycle frame, which, in tum, acts to absorb the impact.
‘Many rear suspension systems available on the market allow the rear wheel of the bicycle to
travel in a particular path that is dictated by the physical construction of the suspension system.
Essentially, the rear wheel path is permanently fixed by the rear suspension design. Different rear
‘wheel paths cause different reactions in the way the bicycle handles. Therefore, one rear wheel path
that is suitable to a particular rider or condition may be unsuitable for another rider or condition,
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Aspects of the present invention relate to a rear suspension system for a bicycle. The rear
suspension system acts to absorb forces impacting on the bicycle by allowing a rear wheel of the
bicycle to be displaced relative to the rest of the bicycle. The structural and geometrical
configurations of the rear suspension system provide a travel path in which the rear wheel moves.
Embodiments of the rear suspensions system can include at least two pivotal connections used to
couple various bicycle components together. The pivotal connections can also be configured to
translate along respective paths, and as such, can be configured in various ways to provide different
rear wheel paths. Various components of the embodiments of the rear suspension system can also be
adjusted to affect the travel path of the rear wheel of the bicycle as well as the leverage ratio to suit
the rider’s preference. In addition, the pivotal connections can be configured to mitigate forces
exerted on the rear suspension system from a bicycle’s drive train and/or braking system.10

WO 2006/032052 PCT/US2005/033410
In one aspect of the present invention, a bicycle includes: a first frame, a second frame, a first
pivot translating assembly, and a second pivot translating assembly. ‘The first frame is coupled with
the second frame through the first pivot translating assembly and the second pivot translating
assembly.
In another form of the present invention, a bicycle includes: a frame; a front wheel rotatably
connected with the frame; a rear suspension system; and a rear wheel rotatably connected with the
rear suspension system. ‘The rear suspension system includes a first member; a first pivot translating
assembly operably coupling the first member with the frame; and a second pivot translating assembly
operably coupling the first member with the frame,
In yet another form of the present invention, a bicycle includes: a frame including a head
tube; a top tube connected with the head tube; a seat tube connected with the top tube; a down tube
connected with the head tube, and a bottom bracket with the down tube and a front wheel operably
coupled with the head tube. The bicycle also includes a rear suspension system including a first link
pivotally connected with the frame; a main swing arm pivotally connected with the first link; a guide
member connected with the frame; and a s¢cond link pivotally connected with the main swing arm
and moveably engaged with the guide member. In addition, the bicycle includes a shock assembly
pivotally connected between the frame and the rear suspension system; and a rear wheel rotatably
connected with the rear suspension system.
In still another form of the present invention, a bicycle includes: a frame; a rear suspension
system including at least one first link pivotally connected with the frame; at least one main swing
arm pivotally connected with the at least one first link; at least one guide rail connected with the
frame; and at least one second link pivotally connected with the main swing arm and coupled with
the at least one guide rail. The bicycle also includes at least one shock assembly pivotally connected
with the frame and the rear suspension system.
In still another form of the present invention, a bicycle includes: a first frame including a first
pivot and a second pivot; a second frame; a means for movingly connecting the first pivot with
the second frame; and a means for movingly connecting the second pivot with the second frame.
The features, utilities, and advantages of various embodiments of the invention will be
apparent from the following more particular description of embodiments of the invention as
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and defined in the appended claims,
