The climate in Sicily never had hard winters. Temperatures vary significantly from inland to coastal areas. The cities located in the centre of the island, in the provinces of Enna and Caltanissetta, are characterized by very cold temperatures in Winter, that in case of that can turn to snow! So if you plan to visit the interior of the island do not forget to plan ahead. The cities on the coast, although less cold, are often very wet, so you may feel cold even if temperatures are not that low. February is the coldest month in Sicily. March is unpredictable. Even if the sun shines bring an umbrella, it could rain suddenly. And this because Winter is still fighting against Spring whos just around the corner. April is the month of a magical weather. Sunny and mild in the plains, but still cold at high altitude. In fact, some people will already be lying in the sun getting their first tan, whilst others equipped with suits will ski on the slopes of Mount Etna. So vacation on the beach or in the mountains? Sicily offers all - agreed? May is a summer month, all ready for those who live in Rome to come. The temperatures are very pleasant in Sicily, tourists wear short sleeves, and sunny warm days are guaranteed! Take with you comfortable clothes and shoes, bring a rain jacket and a hat; you are ready to enjoy Sicily. Do not forget your bathing suit you never know!

Exigent or passionate traveler? We often wonder to what category, according to tastes, desires, curiosities or paths we belong. There are those who carefully plan their journey before leaving, collecting as much information as possible from the websites and tourist guides, and those who choose to enjoy the charm of each place only after they have reached it, conquered and made it their own. There are so many reasons that can lead you to decide on a place to visit over another one. The important thing is to begin the adventure, then everything will be natural and you can find out for yourself about the enchantment of Sicily, whether you are tourists or travelers, no matter how you discover it! With this issue of Amun, we hope to satisfy everyones needs, by suggesting routes that can tell you about our island, in seasons less congested by tourists. Over February and May, there are a large number of religious festivals famous throughout the world, such as the celebrations for St. Agatha in Catania or the rites of Holy Week, creating different experiences in each province, and lets not forget the famous Flower Festival in Noto. The most special festivals and rituals are often the less well known (even to those who were born in Sicily) and continue to live there, so let Amuni take you into their secret world. What to do then? Just sit back, get a copy of Amun and begin your journey. It does not matter where you decide to go, the destination is not so important, its the journey in Sicily that matters.

Cittadini, cittadini Viva SantAgata! The festival of St. Agatha is known throughout the world. Between 3rd and 5th February the celebration is underway, usually until the early hours of the morning of 6th. The event is a religious activity that seeks to unite the spiritual meaning in a simple event in typical baroque style. On the night of August 17th in 1126, two soldiers, Giliberto and Goselmo,
brought to Catania the body of Agatha, stolen in Constantinople. Long ringing bells woke the sleeping city, making thousands of people pour into the street, some in night robes (hence, the adoption of the white bag used by devotees to accompany the Saint). During the festivities of St. Agatha on February 3rd, Catania hosts the race known as St. Agatha Trophy. Since 1951, runners from all over the world have met in the streets of the town to run the 11 km path. Highlights include: a tour of the city by the Mayor by carriage on the morning of 3rd, fireworks in Piazza Duomo and those of the Borgo (on the night of the 5th). The different stops made by the procession, during the two tours (4th & 5th ) are against a backdrop of splendid scenery. The race that the true dedicated runners complete is to run along the steepest streets, at the slope of the Cappuccini and the via San Giuliano. The chants of the Benedictine nuns, highlights the arrival of the fercolo in via Crociferi (on 5th night) with floral tributes to the religious Santuzza. The waving of white handkerchiefs of the devotees, and the roar of voices in the crowd who thank Agatha for the received graces make this a unique occasion. Heat, religion and hearts full of hope - so then, Citizens, citizens, Viva SantAgata!

Beyond the famous fish district, in piazza Federico II of Sweden stands Ursino Castle, built in 1239 by the Emperor Frederick Hohenstaufen, the Stupor Mundi. Its a real fairytale castle with moat and drawbridge. The south side used to be lapped by the waves of the Ionian Sea. Today, however, the coast is more distant because of lava flows that have transformed the surrounding area. The castle has stood up well to the ravages of time and to the devastating eruption of 1669 and earthquake of 1693. Visit the Castle Museum, which displays over 8,000 pieces, including sculptures from Greek and Roman times, a valuable coin collection, works donated by the Benedictine monks, and other artifacts that belonged to Prince Biscari. Nestled between land and sea, like a precious jewel, Acireale contains artistic, natural and cultural treasures. Situated on the famous Timpa di Acireale, between the majestic backdrop of Mount Etna and the nature reserve of the Riviera of the Cyclops, it is a great destination for scuba diving. The town of Acireale owes its baroque atmosphere to the reconstruction that took place after the tragic earthquake of 1693. The Sicilian baroque excels in the Basilica of St. Sebastian and in Piazza Duomo, in the characteristic bell-spire, known as Peter and Paul, in the Palace of the Council and again in the Benedictine Monastery. Strolling along the corso Umberto, enjoy the famous almond or lemon granita all year round! The seaside town of Acireale offers the opportunity to visit typical villages by the sea such as Santa Tecla, Stazzo-Guardia, Capomulini and Pozzillo, all characterized by lava rock beaches. You will find many restaurants specializing in Sicilian fish cuisine. If you want to taste a specialty of Acireale try u pani cunzatu in the district of Scillichenti. Acireale is inextricable linked to the feast of St. Sebastian, patron saint of the city, celebrated and honored on 20th January. It is also synonymous with Carnival; Puppet Theatre and the Baths of Acireale! Take advantage of sulphurous waters that are at a pleasing 22 degrees from a volcanic source in S. Venera al Pozzo - bellissimo!

In this region, between Acitrezza and Acireale the myth of Aci and Galatea comes alive. In times gone by there lived Aci, a handsome shepherd, who fell in love with Galatea, splendid nymph of the sea, who was madly infatuated with Polifemo, the Cyclop. This last one, jealous of the two lovers, murdered Aci throwing against him a large rock. In appeasement of the Gods, Aci was transformed into a river so that Galatea, swimming in it, could be with her beloved. It seems that the river Aci had its mouth just in Capomulini, nowdays a small fishing village that rises in correspondence of the ancient Greek city of Xiphonia founded around the VII century BC.

century BC, more than 2,500 years ago. Even today, the theater holds the most important events of the National Institute of Ancient Drama. The tragedies of Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles are just some of the masterpieces of ancient history that come alive in the natural setting of the Greek Theatre of Syracuse. Within walking distance you will find the legendary Ear of Dionysus: a natural cave carved into the rock, 23m high, whose shape resembles a pointed ear! According to legend, it was once a prison at the time of the tyrant Dionysius. Thanks to the remarkable acoustics of the cave, words whispered in one part can be clearly heard elsewhere! As a result, the prisoners conversations were discovered, because they were unaware that they could be heard - even outside the cave itself. Try it!

Recatevi nellantica citt di Siracusa per visitare il magnifico Teatro Greco incredibilmente pervenuto sino ai giorni nostri pur essendo stato edificato nel V secolo a.C., oltre 2.500 anni fa. Ancora oggi il teatro ospita le pi importanti rappresentazioni dellIstituto Nazionale del Dramma Antico. Le tragedie di Eschilo, Euripide e Sofocle sono solo alcuni dei capolavori della storia antica che rivivono nel palcoscenico naturale del Teatro Greco di Siracusa. A breve distanza troverete il leggendario Orecchio di Dionisio: una grotta naturale scavata nella cava, alta 23 metri, la cui forma appuntita ricorda per lappunto un orecchio. Secondo la leggenda pare fosse una prigione ai tempi del tiranno Dionisio. La straordinaria acustica della grotta consente di sentire chiaramente persino le parole sussurrate sotto voce in fondo alla grotta. E per tale ragione che si scoprivano i contenuti delle conversazioni dei prigionieri che ignoravano di poter essere ascoltati addirittura fuori dalla grotta stessa. Provate anche voi! ne religiosa. Dalle ore 14 del Venerd Santo e per le ventiquattro ore successive, i Sacri Gruppi dei Misteri percorrono le vie della citt tra luci, suoni, colori e grande raccoglimento in preghiera. I Misteri sono realizzati da artisti trapanesi del XVII e XVIII sec. secondo lantica tecnica del carcht. Mentre lo scheletro, il viso e le mani delle Sacre Rappresentazioni sono ottenuti dalla lavorazione di legni pregiati, il corpo su cui appoggiano gli abiti composto di sughero. proprio negli abiti che si cela un segreto! Infatti, per ricreare movimento e dinamicit alla statua, la stoffa usata per realizzarli, prima immersa in una miscela di colla e gesso e successivamente poggiata e modellata sulle statue stesse. Completano la magnificenza delle statue le decorazioni in argento, oro e corallo. La Confraternita di San Michele, i cui adepti sono riconoscibili dai cappucci bianchi e dalla tunica rossa, fu la prima a dare vita alla Processione dei Misteri. Nel XV sec. la Confraternita, costru i primi due gruppi di statue e successivamente incaric le Maestranze per la realizzazione e la manutenzione delle altre. Partecipando alla processione, avrete lopportunit di rivivere uno scorcio della nostra storia pi mistica e alle volte rimasta ancora segreta: il Medioevo. For the past four hundred years, Trapani has been the host of the most important procession commemorating the Passion of Christ;
The Mysteries. The procession shows 20 artistic works representing the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. They are kept in the Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, from where the religious procession begins. It starts from 2 pm of the Good Friday and lasts for the next 24 hours. The Sacred groups of the Mysteries go through the streets of the city, amongst lights, sounds, colours and great recollection in prayer. The Mysteries were made by artists from Trapani of the XVII and XVIII century, according to the ancient technique of carcht. Whilst the skeleton, the face and the hands of the sacred representations are made from processing precious woods, the body, which supports clothes, is made of cork; the clothes hide that secret! Indeed, to recreate the movement and fluidity of the statue, the fabric is first dipped in a mixture of glue and plaster and then, before setting, placed on the statues themselves. To complete the magnificence of the statues, add decorations in silver, gold and coral. The Confraternita of St. Michael, whose followers are recognizable by their white caps and red tunic, were the first to give life to the Procession of the Mysteries. In the fifteenth century, the Confraternita built the first two groups of statues and later commissioned the craftsman for the construction and maintenance of the others. By attending the procession, you will have the opportunity to relive a mystical glimpse of our history and at times, the still secret Middle Ages.

Immerse your spirit in an ancient medieval village, rich in history and legends. Erice, in the province of Trapani is located about 750 meters above sea level over the Omonymous Hill, from which, on clear days, you can even see Mount Etna! Suspended as if in the clouds, Erice has more than 60 churches and monasteries, many of them recently restored and all open to visitors. Walking through the medieval streets, take in the enchantment of the area because this still remains off the beaten track for tourists, despite being internationally renowned. So even in high season it is never overcrowded. Like in a fairy tale, you can wander around the local streets, seeing flowers from the balconies, huge towers, portals and wrought iron grilles. No wonder you might expect to see a knight astride his trusty steed! Very popular among tourists is the Castle of Venus built around the XII century, on the ruins of the oldest temple, dedicated to Aphrodite by the Greeks and then to the Cult of the Venera Ericina by the Romans. It is impossible to resist the temptation of delicious fresh baked pastries of Erice, made with secret recipes from the monasteries. Enjoy the pastries sitting on a seat in the shade of an old tree in the Garden of Balio, built in XIX century and located near the Castle of Venus, it is very reminiscent of an English country garden. It maybe very cold in winter in Erice, you may even see it wounded in a foggy sky. So please ask for weather condition and wear properly. We suggest to get on board of the cable car from Trapani to reach Erice in ten minutes, enjoying a breathtaking view! www.funiviaerice.it

Info www.pianalbanesi.it Symbol of the traditional Sicilian pastry is undoubtedly cannoli! Two ingredients; wafer of the cannoli and ricotta cheese filling, creating a unique and inimitable delight! Recommended by Amun is the cannoli of Piana degli Albanesi in the province of Palermo. This region is different to many other Sicilian ones because of a large community of Albanians who relocated here. From generation to generation, people have passed down the old recipe for cannoli, even the ancient rites of Pashkt (Easter). As a matter of fact, the worlds largest cannoli, winner of the Guinness World Records, has been made here at Piana degli Albanesi. Particularly at Carnival time there is a huge production of cannoli, which are offered in abundance along the streets in the town. Visit Piana degli Albanesi, during Easter holidays, Pashkt time, the only greek-byzantine rite of Sicily.
Lets prepare this dessert together: the wafer is made of flour, marsala, eggs, sugar and a little cocoa. Make the dough, leave for an hour and then roll it to an exact square. Wrap the squares into a cylinder and fry. For the filling; ricotta cheese, sugar and stir . For an alternate, add in chocolate chips or candied fruit. Place the stuffing inside the cannoli, and enjoy!

una citt incastonata fra tre valli 35 Scicli, Scicli, a town nestled between three valleys
Scicli is in the center of the Ibleo Baroque region of Noto Valley. It is 24km from the city of Ragusa and is located on Mount St. Matteo, where even today there is a castle that protected the village. The citys origins date back to 1500 BC. Scicli was dominated by Arabs. Recaptured by Ruggero II DAltavilla in 1091, the year of the Norman victory over the Saracens,
which, as legend tells, was due to the descent of the Virgin Mary on Horseback. Today the Festival of the Militia, at the end of May, is held to commemorate this event. There is also a re-enactment of the battle at which Normans overthrew Saracens. Actors in period costumes and weapons, act on the road going over the highlights of the battle. Scicli was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1693. When reconstructed, the town moved further south, wedged between three valleys. The Church of San Matteo still dominates from across the village. Scicli is UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monuments are certainly worth visiting: the Church of S. Bartolomeo and the Church of Santa Maria La Nova. Palazzo Benevantano, Palazzo Fava, Palazzo Spadaro, the Church of St. Ignazio and the Church of Our Lady of Consolation that still retains its XVII century door portal. Scicli makes some of the best biscuits and sweets in the region of Ragusa. Black biscuits, cuddureddi, cassate and pancakes are just some of the ones to try!

as peasants, ride their horses through the old town, which are decked with festive flowers and violets. Beautiful blankets made of thousands of flowers are sewn on to a sheet of jute, with deep folklore significance. Four ciaccari, two in front and two behind the knight, in the shape of the cross, trace the path of the horses. Gathered around the campfire are small groups of people enjoying roast meats in the warm May evening. This is the time the peasants address their prayers to the Holy Patriarch and ask for their crops of corn and beans to be protected. The historic ride ends with the awarding of the best made harness .
The Ancient County of Modica celebrates Easter Sunday with a religious procession, so touching. The protagonists are the Risen Christ
and the Madonna who at 10 am are kept away from the Church of St. Mary of Bethlehem through the city streets going in opposite directions. The still-grieving Madonna, wearing a black coat, looks for her Risen Son. At noon they will meet under the Town Hall in a poignant embrace. The Madonna at the sight of the Son, will drop her black coat, accompanied by a flight of white doves to symbolize the Resurrection. A mechanical movement will raise the arms of the Virgin Mary into heaven, and making them open an embrace that surrounds the statue of the Risen Christ. Bells festival, fireworks, the crowd cheers and shouts of joy accompany this celebration with a strong Christian emphasis, involving theatricality for both the faithful and non. Vasari in Sicilian dialect means kissing, hence the name of the festival of Easter, in which the Madonna Vasa Vasa kisses and embraces her Risen Son.

wants to protect the typical local products. Cestobarocco is the synthesis of a culture that expresses agricultural products of excellence and identifies the area as a value. The Department of Economic Development of the Regional Province of Ragusa, has decided to promote this brand because it wants to bring about new opportunities and further economic development of the most important productive sectors of the province. A province with its products summarizes the material culture of Sicily; a territory of limited extent are all of the typical regional products. A land whose every corner tells a story in a pleasant gastronomic geography of flavors. Existing Sicilian recognised specialties are Extra Virgin Olive Oil, DOP Iblei, Cerasuolo Wine, which bear the DOCG (denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin). Now alongside these internationally recognized brands are cheeses from craftsmanship and DOP Ragusa and Modica chocolate and vegetables of the area dedicated to agriculture. The typical characteristics of these unique products are as a result of the consistency of the area which has not undergone significant upheaval as other areas, but is still able to restore a natural image of itself. Cestobarocco wants to be all of that. An enviable Testimonial which conveys the extraordinary beauty of an area using the products it offers from the magnificent land of Iblei.
capoluogo di provincia pi alto dItalia 40 Enna, Enna, the highest province of Italy
Enna is the highest province of Italy, due to its altitude of 970 meters above sea level. Thanks to its archaeological sites, nature reserves, castles, museums, churches, Renaissance and baroque palaces and the medieval quarters, Enna shows you one of the most important pages in Sicilian history. Most places of interest are located along the road of via Roma, which runs through the center of the city. Start from Neglia Square, where you can visit the church of S. Thomas and, through the five largest squares of Enna High, reach the oldest part of the city where the Cathedral of Enna is, (dedicated to Our Lady of the Visitation) the patron saint of the city. Keep going until you meet the Castle of Lombardy, the most imposing castle in Sicily! Enna is proud of the reputation of Belvedere of Sicily, for its location on top of an isolated mountain that recreates a natural terrace overlooking the center of Sicily, with no mountains around restricting the view. One of the most beautiful times to visit Enna is, without doubt, when the rites of Holy Week take place.
At the beginning of ancient history, a nation of Giants built Imachera with epic construction. The ancient ruins have become part of the castle, which consists of huge boulders, stacked on each other without a hint of lime. Although they seem tales of fantasy, a huge rib and a giant skull were found near the ancient castle, and they are still visible at Cathedral of Troina. The Castle imacherese, stood on top of the mountain, 1120 meters above sea level, with three impregnable towers and strong walls with four gates. The Saracens occupied it during the Arab domination, after the Greeks and the Byzantines. Troina, with its prominent location right in the heart of Sicily, became the Capital of the Normal Reign in 1061, when The Great Conte Ruggero I DAltavilla, stormed the castle and drove out the Saracens. He made it his dwelling place, making it the most defended place of the island, and for more than 30 years it was known as the Normans favorite - its eagle nest. In the central square the Cathedral still stands, built by Ruggero I, although altered several times in later centuries. At its side the Norman tower serves as the church bell. The view from the square is surreal. The medieval buildings take you back to a time when Troina was the place of silence and peace, preferred by the monks who retreated into prayer. A strong testimony to this past are the Convent of Cappucini, the ruins of the old and the new Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel, the Monastery of St. Elia dAmbul, the Monastery of St. Augustine, with its church, built in the same spot where there was the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, dating from 170 AD. The Basilican monk Sylvester, now the patron saint, who lived in the twelfth century, chose Troina to profess his faith. The Basilica of St Sylvester guards his tomb, and was built in his honor near the cave where, according to legend, two hunters found in 1400, his body miraculously intact.

Festa dei Rami e la Ddarata 50 La The Festival of branches and the Ddarata
On the night of Thursday before the third Sunday of May, the devotees called the Ramara, meet in the church of St. Sylvester and depart on foot on a pilgrimage to the distant forests in the heart of the Nebrodi Mountains, where according to tradition, they gather the branches of laurel before going back to the country. At dawn, after long hours walking, the Ramara come in a wide clearing, lite fires and prepare the camps. They bring with them saddle bags filled with homemade products, as some vastedda co sammucu and nfasciateddi, also some good wine to keep warm and cheerful. Divided into two groups, some remain at the base camp, while others go looking for the laurel. They will find it at Anghira Faccilonga (near the town of San Fratello), where it grows naturally along the slopes. A mystical place that remains unspoiled. Here you can pray and listen to your heart and soul, relax. To shouts of
joy and thanksgiving, collected twigs of laurel, on Sunday morning Ramara enter triumphant, parading through the ancient streets of Troina. If you missed The Festival of branches, do not miss the pompous entry of Ddarara that will take place the following Sunday. They are pilgrims as well, but riding horses and donkeys and will enter the town also adorned with loads of laurel gathered in the woods at night. This reenactment of the collection of laurel is in honour of St. Sylvester, a week later. In fact, once the Ramaras were mostly farmers and shepherds of flocks, and went on a pilgrimage on foot, while the Ddaratas were used to ride horses, as they were landowners and the richest people in town.
The Legend Historical records tell of a castle, impenetrable even to the great Norman armies. It was thanks to ingenuity and cunning that they were able to find an opening. The defeat of the Saracens by the work of Conte Ruggero is remembered as follows: at nights, a miller, in the company of a large dog, used to supply the castle with food and grain, getting up from Porta Baglio, after the dog was barking. That was, in fact, the curious signal for recognition to enter inside the castle. On a dark night, Conte Ruggero and his army, moving silently from the nearby forests, waited for the opening of the door to burst like a raging torrent which left no escape for the Saracens.. Some of the most valiant and brave knights formed in Troina, in those days, a pact of brotherhood and loyalty; they were the Indivisible Knights. Nowadays, we do not know so much about them, but we still tell the tales of their conquests in Sicily. It is said that a sacred parchment was found. Even though it was illegible, it seemed to recognize some initial of the names of the Knights: B,A,G,A,G,D, ... still wrapped in a thick cloud of mystery!

On the slopes of Etna, surrounded by some ancient craters, is the city of Trecastagni. Since May 1593, the city honours three young Christian brothers martyrs; St. Alfio, St. Philadelphio and St. Cirino. The festivities begin on May 1st; when 21 gunshots are fired from the old mill to kick off the festivities. During the following days, the naked or devotees, dressed only in white shorts with a red stripe on the back and loaded down by the weight of large candles, begin their procession barefoot towards the Shrine of St. Alfio. The St. Alfio festival also features a typical parade of decorated Sicilian carts that house the rustic orchestra (flute, tamburellone, guitar and marranzanu). Between 9th & 10th May the faithful, the naked, the Sicilian carts and the orchestras of the city make a pilgrimage to the doors of the Shrine of St. Alfio, going up the popular chianata of Sapunari. On the morning of 10th, Piazza Marconi in Trecastagni, is full of people, in a respectful silence, waiting for the doors of the Shrine to open and unveil the Saints. They then celebrate with standing ovations that shake the Shrine! The festivities continue with the procession of the three Saints through the streets, with celebrations... and braids of garlic which adorn the naked and the carts to symbolize the participation in the event.
