L'opera fa parte della raccolta di incisioni I Capricci (1799). L'artista rappresenta l'allegoria dei Vizi e delle sciagure umane. Ci mostra l'altra parte di noi stessi, L'abisso inquietante del male, della Superstizione e della follia.

NOTTURNO Gabriele D'annunzio

L'opera fu realizzata a Civitavecchia nel 1916 mentre il poeta era fermo immobile e temporaneamente cieco a causa di un terribile incidente aereo. D'Annunzio la scrisse materialmente utilizzando circa diecimila strisce di carta o cartigli su ciascuna delle quali era vergata una sola riga di testo. Il materiale redatto fu poi messo in ordine dalla figlia del poeta.

With the beauty and vital power of its trees denounces the ugliness of the industrial world around it.
