Joe! karp joins rambus “NOTE*: message to outside is only that “joel is going to help us
‘with contract negotiations”
for those of you in rkk or travelling who missad staff meeting yesterday:
joel katp joined rambus effective yesterday 10/20 as vice president
responsible for assessing our patent portfolio, determining when chips
infringe our patent portfolio, setting licensing strategies for infringing
chips, and for negotiations with companies that build and sell infringing
chips.
joel has extensive experience in the semiconductor industry at senior
levels. most recently joe! has been with samsung since 1990 as vice
president, product planning. joel was based in seoullkineung and reported
Girectly to dr. deeje chin, general manager of the dram division. joet's
responsibities included licensing negotiations - both with companies
licensing to rambus and when samsung had IP that other companies infringed
previously joel was president of his own company, visic, that did SRAM'S
‘and was merged with VLSI Technology. joel also was one of the early
employees at intel. Joel's experience, knowledge and industry contacts
willbe critical for his role at rambus.
currently we expect based on datasheets that both ddr sdram/sgram and
sldram will infringe our patents. we cannot be sure of this though till we
actually get and examine silicon - from what we hear this will happen
sometime in the next 3-6 months. this quarter joe's task is to review all
Of our contracts, all of our patents, competitive datasheets and determine
ur licensing strategy, so that when we get silicon we are prepared quickly
to move on analysis and negotiations,
“*NOTE**- we are not making any public statement outside of rambus about
joel joining. IF someone asks you "hey I hear Joel Karp joined Rambus,
what's he going to do" please ONLY say "he's going to help us on contract
egotistions." Our strategy is to downplay the whole infringementIP issue
until there is actual infringement.
as I've said before, patents are really just a backup line of defense. the
#1 strategy for winning must continue to be having the best solution and
delivering it on time, on spec, within cost commitments and satisfying our
customer's needs better than the competitors. i think we are well
positioned to do this but we have a LOT to do to complete our
programs/commitments on Direct Rambus and Concurrent Rambus over the next,
several quarters,
geoff
