‘samsung exec update meeting 8/12/97
ii met today at samsung/kiheung with
- ¥.w. lee president & ceo of semiconductor busienss
[BEPONP & am, sales & marketing, semiconductor business (reports o
yw!
= hk. lim vp&gm, memory division, semiconductor business (reports to yw lee)
this was my first time meet lee and choi. have met lim many times before.
(y.w.lee sure is “the big boss” at samsung: as we walked around everyone:
‘would stop and nod/bow, he has like 3-4 assistants with walky talkies
calling cars/restaurants/etc, his car just goes through the front gate
without any baggage checks like normal, etc.)
the main objective of this meeting was to start to address intel's “dram
‘vendor happiness” issue - they say samsung especially (and micron) are
vocally unhappy about rambus to intel execs. this concems intel because
‘samsung and micron are two of their strategic memory partners and samsung
is by far #1 in memory business.
daveialien told me intel really keys off of samsung so to go into samsung
happiness maximization mode, s0 i di.
‘'d say overall the meeting went well for starters. we spent 2 hours then
they invited me for lunch with all 3 of them. think i developed a good
rapport with y.w. lee; but didn't really crack g.s. cho’'s shell.
{spent most of the meeting explaining our business model, our technology's,
benefits, and what we do to earn our fees/royalties - what is our value
added.
‘on concurrent g.s. choi was quite negative in the meeting: says sgram
market will be 100M pieces next year so i's bigger than rambus (i pointed
‘out and they agreed that 100M of 8M is equivalent to our 50M+ projection of
‘16M units for 1998) and that rambus is much more expensive so i's limited
to niche markets. h.k. lim pointed out that rambus' cost/price should be
viewed against sgram, the competition, not sdram or edo 16M. g.s.choi just
said he'd rather sell two 8M sgrams than one 16M rdram becuase of the
‘relative die sizes in samsung’ process.
{ said that a) customers have already selected to use rambus so they can't
plug in sgrams, b) that samsung's die size and cost to us looked very
‘competitive relative to other dram companies, and c) i would be surprised
if samsung couldn't compete effectively with necitoshibaletc. my sense was
.w. lee and h.k. lim agreed with my logic but think g.s. choi remained
unmoved.
since my objective was to build relationships/harmony i tried not to dwell
and move on.
i think the nintendo 64 vs sony example was the most helpful with yw.lee
demonstrating that maybe we could have some dram cost premium but stil
result ina cheaper total system.
going over our role in technology development and business model was very
helpful with y.w. lee - think he had several misconceptions before.

in reviewing rambus dram licensees it became very clear they do NOT like
‘taiwan dram companies: their view is they get free technology from japan,
they don't “contribute to the industry’, and they undercut price and ruin
the business. if we license talwan dram companies they would NOT be very
happy (nor would any of our Korean dram partners for the same reasons),
{think they actualy agreed with our argument that faster drams at the
‘same price will end up resulting in more dram markel growth.
they really liked the RIMM module concept and think it will be much more
likely to be accceptable to pc oems. they liked the idea they could
