Non sono esordienti i componenti di questo nuovo ensemble attivo a Memphis, attu
ale residenza di Michael Jefry Stevens. Assieme al pianista troviamo l'interessa
nte sassofonista Don Aliquo, il bassista Tom Giampietro e il batterista Jonathan
Wires. Tutti, a parte Stevens, sono musicisti operanti prevalentemente nell'are
a sud-orientale degli States e la musica ne riflette gli umori caldi e appassion
ati.
Lo stile del quartetto rientra nell'area ai confini tra bop avanzato e free, anc
he se il particolare feeling cantabile di cui s'è detto lo caratterizza in modo
particolare. Don Aliquo è forse lo strumentista più in vista, al soprano e al te
nore, sostenuto egregiamente dalle oblique armonie di Stevens. Se quest'ultimo n
on ha bisogno di molte presentazioni (per una monografia sul suo lavoro clicca q
ui) Don Aliquo necessita di qualche breve nota.
Nativo di Pittsburgh, opera a Nashville dal 2000 come docente alla Tennessee Sta
te University, dirige suoi gruppi ed ha collaborato con Gary Burton, Rufus Reid,
Marvin Stamm e altri. La sua voce strumentale si caratterizza per l'equilibrio
cantabile e il gusto per le sottigliezze, con inflessioni che ricordano Charles
Lloyd.
La ritmica si muove con buon interplay sia nei momenti più tradizionali che nell
e occasionali confluenze verso la libera improvvisazione post-free.
Tra i momenti più coinvolgenti ricordiamo "Ashes" il brano d'apertura scritto da
Andrew Hill, che è interpretato con particolare calore lirico. Particolarmente
a suo agio nelle ballad il quartetto si fa apprezzare in una serie di accattivan
ti temi: "A Long and Lonely Nights Work" di Giampietro, "Longing" di Aliquo, "De
cember" di Wires e "For Wheeler" di Stevens, dedicato al grande trombettista.
Esecuzioni nitide, impreziosite da lirici e morbidi assoli entro percorsi che gi
ocano di continuo con la memoria, portando in superficie richiami e suggestioni
degli anni cinquanta e sessanta. Conclude l'intenso "Spiritual" di Stevens, vibr
ante di riferimenti alla tradizione nel bell'assolo dell'autore.

Newcomers are not components of this new ensemble active in Memphis, current res
idence of Michael Jefry Stevens. Along with the interesting pianist, saxophonist
Don Aliquo, bassist and drummer Tom Giampietro Jonathan Wires. All, except Stev
ens, musicians are working mainly in the south-eastern States and the music refl
ects the moods and hot amateurs.
The style of the quartet falls within the borders of advanced bop and free, even
if the particular lyrical feeling of which we have said characterizes in partic
ular. Don Aliquo is perhaps the most visible, the soprano and tenor, supported a
dmirably by the oblique harmonies of Stevens. If it does not need much introduct
ion (for a monograph on his work click here) Don Aliquo needs some quick notes.
A native of Pittsburgh, working in Nashville since 2000 as a professor at Tennes
see State University, directs his own groups and collaborated with Gary Burton,
Rufus Reid, Marvin Stamm and others. His voice is characterized by the instrumen
tal balance and a taste for lyrical subtleties, with inflections reminiscent of
Charles Lloyd.
The rhythmic moves with good interplay is in the most traditional in occasional
confluences towards free improvisation post-free.
Among the most engaging moments remind "Ashes" the opening track written by Andr
ew Hill, who is played with a special lyrical warmth. Particularly at ease in th
e ballads, the quartet is appreciated a number of compelling themes: "A Long and
Lonely Nights Work" by Giampietro, "Longing" by Aliquo, "December" by Wires and
"For Wheeler" Stevens, dedicated to great trumpeter.
Executions crisp, embellished with soft, lyrical solos by pathways that play con
stantly in my memory to bring up reminders and suggestions of the fifties and si
xties. Concludes the intense spiritual Stevens, vibrant tradition in bell'assolo
of references to the author.
