but to make an ironic statement. In the same way, buildings are becoming more
sculptural, while fashion, music and design are increasingly merging one into
another, and gaining enormously from it. Designer hotels and boutique hotels are
another example of the way in which multiple forms of expression are blended
to form a unique luxury experience. Classical garments are constantly restyled to
create a new sense of surprise, as in the iconic trench coat. Discover all this and
more in this issue, and don’t forget to take a look at the greatest melting-pot of all,
the Internet, and in particular, your on-line guide to global luxury, luxos.com!

seppur spesso esasperate sino a ribaltarsi in uno sberleffo.
come fonte d’ispirazione quasi esistenzialista.
Buona lettura!
As always, artists are the first people who, in a period of crisis, reveal the earliest
signs of change. They show the direction in which society will move, in terms of
attitude, appearance, lifestyle and many other aspects. Stefano Pasquini’s article
shows how artists are demonstrating a curious desire for monumentality and
magnificence, though possibly brought to levels at which these characteristics are
reversed and become a sardonic, even biting statement. Examples are the return to
marble for sculpture, or the reappearance of the idea that the human figure can be
an almost existentialist source of inspiration. Once again, man becomes the point
of reference for visual expressions, and he is considered as both the scapegoat for
problems and the demiurge who solves them. This approach seems to indicate a
yearning for long-lost humanistic thought, and in today’s context, it can only herald
a positive future. On that note, I hope that you enjoy this issue!
“Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté, luxe, calme et volupté,” this was how Charles
Baudelaire immortalised the image of contemporary luxury, as something between
sensorial pleasure and mental ecstasy. So what’s better than succumbing to the
seduction of Italy’s most mystic region? In this issue, we explore the land of
Umbria: the riches of ancient palaces, monasteries and districts that sway to
jazz rhythms in a festival of colour, music and aroma. This is a melting pot of
spirituality and sensations, magic and tradition, sound and silence. All lead on to
the ultimate luxury, that of self-discovery. It is impossible to put a price on good
living, but it is of infinite value.

Hubble Craft
e casual. La palette è decisamente underground, a
metà strada tra nero, bianco, grigio e prugna. L’estetica
è classica, autoironica, come lo stesso Hubble.
Cozy Cool

Lenti vistose disponibili in

Fourth Wave
Il folk incontra il punk. L’Africa si fonde con le
Highlands scozzesi. Il primitivismo lascia il posto alla
modernità. La collezione AI 2010 di Missoni riscopre e
reinterpreta il mood tribale attraverso tacchi intrecciati a
mano all’uncinetto, perfetti per i nomadi globali di oggi.

The Dodo temporary store, dedicated to the panda and the brand’s 15 years’ support
for the WWF, will be open until the end of 2010
In Corso Matteotti 9 a Milano
Entrando nella boutique, i panda sorridono, rigorosamente in versione black and
Finalmente a casa, Mr. Panda.
An important anniversary for Dodo by Pomellato. Fifteen years on, it is giving all those who love lucky-charm
jewellery the chance to possess another unique message of friendship and happiness. The Temporary Store,
created by designer Paola Navone, in Corso Matteotti 9, Milan, will be open until the end of the 2010, and it is a
tribute to the panda, symbol of the WWF. Dodo has always worked with the World Wildlife Fund, contributing
part of its revenue to the protection of the environment and animals. In the boutique, there is a series of
cheerful pandas in black and white. On the wall is the sequence of moves from the “Thai-Chi-Panda”, while
five giant globes hang from the ceiling, with the lovely animal’s face. And amongst the display units and tables,
there is a witty wall made in 9,000 black and white Lego bricks, with many other gadgets based on the panda
motif. You’d feel at home, Mr. Panda.

From 1852, Hästens has been making the finest beds in the world. After the launch of a new generation of
continental beds, Hästens has applied the system of dual Deltabonell springs to its Scandinavian beds: Superia
II, Excel II and Marquis. Superia II stands higher than other models, and its most distinctive feature is the
patented dual spring system. The principal characteristic of Excel II, on the other hand, is its total adaptability
to the body, adapting to the weight of the user and permitting unhindered air circulation. Marquis features
natural padding, and the extensive use of Swedish pine in the frame. Hästens beds can be thought of as a long-
term investment for health, and they are absolutely environmentally-friendly (they can be recycled to 100%).
Each bed comes with a written 25-year guarantee against the breakage of springs and frame. And so you can
follow in the footsteps of the Swedish Royal Family and many other prestigious clients: choose uncompromising
excellence for quality sleep.

Trenches
of style
From military uniforms to a timeless item of women’s
clothing: Luxos leads you on a discovery of the contemporary
re-interpretations of the trench coat
by Nina Modigliani
Photo: Courtesy of Dior
dell’abbigliamento maschile, in stile Humphrey Bogart.
haute couture.
The trench coat is one of those iconic garments that have a special place in
history. It first appeared in the trenches (hence its name) during World War I,
notably in Thomas Burberry’s version for British officers. It then went on to become
an essential piece of men’s clothing in the Humphrey Bogart style. But the true
revolution came with its “official” introduction to women’s wardrobes when Audrey
Hepburn walked under the New York rain in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Still
trendy today in many different styles, the trench coat is an all-seasons garment that’s
perfect for a sophisticated lady. So, whether you feel like a movie star or not, let
yourself succumb to the seduction of this timeless passe-partout.
If you love equestrian sports you might find something interesting in Christian Dior’s
2010-11 autumn-winter collection. Riding her horse, John Galliano’s woman leaves
the 18th century stables to seduce romantic poets. Well-aged leather and soft earth
tones for long coats perfectly match riding boots and exude timeless elegance.

Prada choose to provoke and
contradict, by emphasising
the silhouette through
strategically placed ruches
and geometric designs
contemporaneo, da lui stesso definito “new chic”.
geometrici. Come nel trench color cappuccino, in lana cotta e delicato decolleté in lucida vernice. E il risultato è
straordinariamente sexy.
Giorgio Armani’s style for this winter is decidedly glamorous and urban. The king of Italian fashion has created
a new style of femininity that combines classic elements with a contemporary style, which he defines as “new
chic.” One of the must-have items is the long trench coat with the turned-up collar, in flame red, the most
feminine colour of all.
Louis Vuitton draws inspiration from 1950s silhouettes and creates a fashion show inspired by a sumptuous yet
discreet femininity, characterized by charming folds and a strong emphasis on craftsmanship. Pearl grey adds
sophistication to a romantic trench coat that evokes the Brigitte Bardot of “Je t’aime, moi non plus”. Prada has
also developed a retro theme for its autumn/winter 2010-2011 collection. The Milanese designer provokes and
contradicts by emphasising the silhouette through strategically placed ruches and geometric designs, a perfect
example of which is the cappuccino-coloured trench coat in boiled wool and a discreet patent décolleté. The
result is extremely sexy. prada

ed esclusive, così come evidenziato su ogni etichetta (“This is an original Ballantyne”).
Classic understatement and contemporary interpretations; British style, Italian tailoring. Today, Ballantyne’s
main challenge is to develop new interpretations of “classic style”, in order to achieve a sports look that also
addresses the needs of an informal, relaxed and refined lifestyle.
Knightley, Natalia Vodianova, Michael Schumacher, Pierce Brosnan e Daniel Craig.
In Via Sant’Andrea 10/A a Milano è presente il primo flagship store Ballantyne. All’interno della boutique –
proprio must.

Other artists who have reached official recognition, such as British
sculptor Anthony Gormley, have returned to the human figure
as the ultimate source of reference. As the glaciers melt and the
sea levels rise, man is seen as both a scapegoat for environmental
disasters and their problem-solver. Many artists are rediscovering
marble in order to express this ambiguous portrait of man.

Carrara’s Sculpture Bienniale was founded in 1957, making it one of the oldest such
events in the world. This year it looks at the concept of monuments, in part through the
curatorship of Fabio Cavallucci. Famous and unfamiliar artists provide their own vision
of the monument, under the title Postmonument. Often they use Carrara marble to stress
the futility of the very idea of a monument, and of its task of immortalising history.
Maurizio Cattelan had already utilised marble for a critical commentary on the Iraq Visit:

In countries still subject to powerful regimes or who are emerging from their decline and fall, monuments are
particularly controversial. While sculpture has become a diversified and intimate form of expression, just like any
other art form, the monument is often considered as a means of coming to terms with an uncomfortable past.
A monument can provide a succinct and biting way of looking at political history and propaganda. Dutch artist
Kevin van Braak reformulates physical conditions and constructs non-places, so that the spectator experiences
obviously artificial situations as something real.
Today, architecture supplies the symbols and monuments for our cities. The practical features of monumental
buildings transform the human aspiration for majestic expression into something more comprehensible.

All’interno della cassa
A mechanical movement indicating the day of the week, day, month, and moon phase is behind
the pleasantly clean dial of the Saxonia Annual Calendar Lange & Söhne. Its peculiarity is that it
needs to be reset only once per year to ensure maximum precision. Within the case is a Sax-o-mat
movement with zero reset function, which stops the movement when the crown is pulled out and
resets the seconds hand zero, which enables the watch to be reset more precisely.

modern Tuscan cuisine served in the elegant surroundings of Villa La Vedetta, it is no
wonder that the restaurant’s culinary brilliance has won it awards and listings in the
most important Italian and international guides.
Named for the rival factions of medieval Italy, the Guelphs and Ghibellines
were, respectively, those who supported the papacy and those who supported
the Holy Roman Empire. Like its namesake, the Guelfi & Ghibellini in a
way expresses “conflict,” though in this case the opposing forces are entirely
culinary, and the ensuing result is a graceful cohesion, refinement in a
combination of contrasts. Combining modern décor within the setting of a
Renaissance palace.

Enduring value.
l’ingresso principale dell’hotel.
illuminazione teatrale.
luce colorata.
Venice is traditionally thought of as a city of light and colour. Do you think that Palazzo Barbarigo reflects this
romantic concept?
Definitely, yes. The new interior design really begins from the water, from the Grand Canal which represents the
principal entrance to the hotel. Reflections of the marine setting are enhanced by the large mirrors in the main
hall, interacting with the lovely turtledove grey colour with touches of purple-red, which extends throughout the
hotel’s two floors. Venice can be compared to a gigantic film set, and the hotel’s interiors are superbly designed,
with much contemporary furniture, black marble, black crystal, printed velvet, and theatrical lighting.
