Preface
The Berlin wall still up, mankind still had to travel to the moon, there were no
tablets or smartphones and yet Xacus was already there. In fact, Giorgio and
Paolo Xoccato grew up next to cutting tables and sewing machines. Their
father, Alberto, in 1956 had founded a tailor shop to produce shirts. He taught
to his children, since a young age, that the key to a perfect shirt is the wellbeing
of those who will wear it. Out of their own initiative, the two brothers understood
that to create beautiful things, technique is not everything: one needs to add
enthusiasm after having mastered experience and skills – this is what makes
all the difference.
Bearing witness to this is the fact that Xacus, for more than sixty years has been
specializing in creating men’s and women’s shirts and is present on the main
international markets with its unique style, famous ability to research shapes
and materials, and the accuracy of processing embellished by exclusive
details. Giorgio and Paolo have learned a lot about this “live” material, which
breathes and moves, that people know as a “shirt”. And they believe that it is
time to share a portion of their knowledge through a book: the one you are
holding into your hands.
NATI CON
LA CAMICIA
BORN WITH A SHIRT
ON, BORN LUCKY
In realtà, insieme agli amici
A few years ago a friend suggested I write a small polemic book – a sort of pamphlet – explaining
my aversion to T-shirts. He had been impressed by what I had told him and had proposed a
striking title: I hate T-shirts. As will become clear, it made sense to write it in English.
As a boy I had bought the only T-shirt I have ever owned in London. A splash of deep reddish
purple outlined the silhouette of Johnny Marr on a white background. Of the four members of The
Smiths I have always suspected that he – the guitarist – was the most brilliant. But let’s not get
off the subject. I wore the T-shirt only once, on a day in July ’92; I thought I would run into Johnny
on the streets of London and impress him. In fact, together with the friends I was there with, I only
managed to get a glimpse of the Icelandic singer Björk in a playground, before she pretended to
be someone else and hastily disappeared.

Iniziali e monogrammi
Initials and monogramming
semplice e comprensibile.

According to tradition, the initials of the shirt are embroidered on the left side, halfway
between the chest and waist (at the height of the fifth button, including the collar button),

Alternatively, they can be sewn onto the cuffs.

Lowercase print and uppercase italics are the most used. Choice of colour is fundamental;
it should highlight the initials or contrast the colour of the shirt. Therefore, it is best to avoid
shades that are too similar to those of the garment but it is a question of personal taste.

The cut follows exactly the outline of the body;
the armhole is narrow and it generally has

using elasticized fabrics, which allow for greater
ease of movement.
A shirt also has a skeleton, light but strong, and constructed on a detailed
structure according to an ancient art that makes each garment unique: this
is the frame or the intertwining of warp and weft, the basic bones of each

techniques to transform cotton fibre into shirt fabric, from raw materials to
weaving processes.

Canclini
Canclini

chiaro scuri cromatici e dettagli in micro fantasie.
The innovative weaver Joseph-Marie Jacquard invented this fabric in France at the end of the
18th century. At the time this technology revolutionized the nascent textile industry and today has
become a standard product.
This weave allows “embroidery” to be carried out directly on the loom for men’s shirts and,
therefore, on the fabric: complex patterns, geometric patterns, small bubble formations and
delicate reliefs. Thanks to this technique the implementation of designers’ ideas is without limits.
In fact, it is possible to design and embellish cotton and silk fabrics with evenly distributed
diamond or star patterns, or play with light and dark colours and micro detailed patterns.
This versatility makes Jacquard shirts suited to many occasions: including an office casual chic
outfit, a preppy leisure look or ceremonial or evening dress.
Denim
Denim
The iconic material for work clothes, denim is a versatile fabric that over the years has become
a synonym for young, casual clothing. Historically its takes its name from the city of Nimes,
where it was invented. In France it was known as serge de Nîmes or bleu de Gênes (Genoa
blue) from which blue jeans is derived. The fabric was distributed from the port of Genoa.
Denim was originally made with a linen warp and a cotton weft, while today cotton is normally
used. This material is very hard-wearing and strong, and the twill weave exalts its versatility.
Denim is inextricably linked to the indigo blue, a particular hue that gives the garment its
unique characteristics. In fact, indigo is a pigment of vegetable origin derived from Indigofera
Tinctoria, rich in indingotina, an active substance, which is extracted from the leaves left to
ferment in large tanks together with alkaline solutions. Indigo is part of the “vat dyes” category:
given that it is not water soluble it must be transformed into a soluble form to ensure that it
can dye the fibres of the fabric. However, it has a peculiarity: wash after wash other dyes tend
to go grey, while indigo lightens maintaining a brilliant blue hue that, over time, becomes
brighter. This peculiarity is due precisely to its insolubility, which prevents the colour binding
completely with the fibre of the material that the garment is made of.
Flanella di cotone
Cotton flannel
Un tessuto morbido e caldo,
ma leggero da indossare
A soft warm but lightweight fabric to wear
Flannel is the result of a particular cotton processing which gives the material with the
capacity to keep the wearer warm. In fact, the fluff that evenly covers the surface of the
material insulates because it retains air. There are many versions of flannel, depending on the
production process. Cotton and wool mix flannel, or based on the pattern: checked flannel,
striped flannel, jacquard flannel, which is a geometric patterned knit.
The production process has three phases, which correspond to three specific finishing
treatments. It begins with fulling, that is matting; then teazling, brushing that pulls the hair
out, and combing in which it is all combed in the same direction.
In addition to the natural ability to warm the body, cotton flannel can at times be a very light
hard-wearing and thus a long-lasting fabric.

Il tinto in capo
Garment-dyed
A touch of colour for the casual shirt
neutra (solitamente bianco o beige). Dopo aver assemblato la camicia in tutte le sue
lavorazioni, essa viene colorata attraverso procedimenti di tintoria speciali. Possono,
Garment-dyed is a process that can be applied to various natural fibre fabrics such as cotton,
linen and wool. It is a very versatile ancient technique. In Japan it has been known as shibori
since the 8th century. The process for the realization of these garments does not start with
coloured fabrics that are then made up. On the contrary, first the garment is made with a
fabric that is said to be “ready to dye” which is usually a very neutral colour (normally white
or beige). After the shirt has been made up, it is dyed with a special dyeing procedure. In fact,
they can be washed with solid colours or bleached in specific areas and cold colours can be
applied with particular enzymes, obtaining very appealing “lived-in” effects, such as “worn” or
“faded”. It can also be referred to as “over-dyeing” when the garment has been initially made
with a coloured or printed material and is then dyed again. A blend of different colours and
shades will be obtained that, if carried out in a professional manner, will produce a unique
“lived-in” garment.

THE BODY IN MOVEMENT
Each gesture and each action are expressions of a body’s dynamism and
its capacity to react to external stimuli, just like a shirt, which can adapt
to any occasion enabling the person wearing it to move easily in a specific
environment. In this chapter, there are some rules and advice on the best way
to wear this item of clothing in contexts that sometimes require an etiquette.

La camicia da frac
The tailcoat shirt
chiamato collo diplomatico oppure a rondine.
The shirt with the longest history, because the tailcoat itself has remained unchanged from the
early years of the nineteenth century. The collar is high, starched and with leaves of different
lengths; it is usually called a wing-tip collar. The most classical version has a dicky, that is
a second layer of fabric sewn on the front that makes the garment look rigid and compact.
The tailcoat shirt has removable gold or platinum buttons, with or without diamonds, and
buttonholes to fasten the shirt to the trousers, as well as double cuffs. It is perfect when
accompanied by a white bow tie.
Camicia da smoking
The dinner jacket shirt
rigorosamente a filo.
Like the tailcoat shirt, the dinner jacket shirt can have a high, rigid, folded wing-tip collar with

all’interno del capo.
The pyjama collar does not need to be buttoned up to the neck and, always being open,
can be worn with a scarf tucked in. This casual shirt often has double breast pockets and is
characterized by a straight hem with small side openings so that it can be worn outside the
trousers.

La camicia in jeans
Denim shirt
Given the weight of the fabric, it is ideal for summer evenings or on top of a T-shirt in spring

worn under a blue blazer can be distinctive even in a more formal setting.
La camicia in flanella
Flannel shirt

The difference between the different types of treatment is easy to spot:
one can tell from how they feel when worn. In fact, many non-iron shirts
are rigid, especially on the front near the pleat box, collar, cuffs and
