 “They really spoke my langauge”
The phrase “they really spoke my languages” captures the essence of
what is so special about langauge learning. Why? Connection. When you
speak the same langauge as another person, you connect with them in
a deep and profound way. It’s an amazing feeling! So whether you are
learning a new language for fun, to celebrate your family and friends, or
simply just to engage with the world, please give yourself a round of
applause. Hopefully this book and the others in the series will help you
on your way.
Here are five easy ways to help bring a new langauge into daily life.
Food Pick one day each week to celebrate the culture and try some food
from the country whose language you are learning. Not only do you get to
have a lovely meal, but you can learn all the names of all the ingredients
too. Vocabulary never tasted so good!
Radio Tuning the radio to a station from your chosen country is a great
way to gently introduce more langauge into your day. Even if it’s just on
in the background, it will help you embrace the cadence and rhythm of
the language.
Songs If you want to learn a langauge fast, nothing beats the magic of
music. The simple process of listening to a song, singing along, and
repeating it again and again really gets new vocabulary into your brain.
Even if you don’t understand all the words, simply singing along will
help you perfect your accent. And it’s loads of fun too!
New object, new word This idea is especially good for young chidren.
As you introduce them to new objects - whether that is food, toys,
clothes, people or anything - try only using the word in the language you
are learning. This really cements the vocabulary, and helps build a life-
long foundation.
Change the language settings on the TV The language settings for ‘on
demand’ television can be another really simple way to increase a child’s
exposure to a new language.
However you choose to take forward your langauge learning journey,
best of luck, and don’t forget to have fun!
