General description
The use of Soles internationally patented piles finds important use in infrastructure works in the presence of particular
logistical, environmental and timing conditions.
Lack of dumping materials, absence of vibration harmful to existing structures (buildings, embankments, pipelines
etc.) absence of noise, possibility of operating in narrow spaces both width-wise and height-wise (for example due to
the presence of high-voltage power lines ) are some of the benefits of using Soles piles.
Other highly-operative advantage is that it is possible to drive the pile after the execution of structural elements such
as piers etc. Also this can add a saving in the dimensions of the foundation structures due to the possibility of using
smaller Soles piles diameters and due to the possibility of concentrating high loads on small areas.
Standard phases:

2. positioning of pile driving assemblies on the top of the bedding layer
3. positioning of the reinforcement of the mat foundation
4.casting of the mat foundation

5. Descrizione generale
prime quali inerti, acciaio, ecc.
materie prime quali inerti, acciaio, ecc.;
acustico nell’ambiente di lavoro e nelle zone circostanti;
soprattutto se si trattasse di materiale inquinante;
apposite cave e di smaltimento e trattamento di materiale in apposite discariche;
in comunicazione di falde idriche a vari livelli;
6. Nessuna controindicazione nel caso siano presenti falde in pressione vista la perfetta tenuta del betoncino iniettato;
ambientale nell’area dell’intervento.
eliminazione di opere provvisionali e spostamenti di ostacoli come per esempio linee elettriche aeree, ecc.;
fanghi bentonitici nel caso di perforazioni a fango;
laterale del palo Soles, con conseguente maggiore portanza laterale;
1. General description
Relative to the above, thanks to the presence of Soles international patented technology, the majority of these
problems are solved; in fact, within the sphere of sustainable development relative to the protection and respect of the
environment, the Soles piles have the following operational advantages:
1. Absence of vibrations, since the driving operations that are carried out using hydraulic jacks, with the consequent
absence of noise and that also guarantee the static safety of structures, road and railway works, and sub-services
adjacent to the construction areas. In fact, especially in the case of very deformable subsoil, the dynamic energy
conveyed by the ground during the stages of dynamically-driven pile work would be partially transmitted to the soil
under nearby existing foundations and embankments, therefore, possibly causing damage to the structure and/or
adjacent road works. This would subsequently cause further subsidence compared to what was already experienced
during the primary and secondary consolidation processes connected to the presence of the structure and/or road
works. This would require further works aimed at protecting the existing infrastructures, with consequent damage
to the landscape (environmental impact) and wasting of raw material such as inert material, steel, etc.;
2. The absence of disturbing noise (equipment is electrically and hydraulically-operated) and, therefore, the absence of
noise pollution within the workplace and surrounding areas;
3. The absence of excavation or any other sort of ground extraction work, resulting in extreme neatness of the
workplace and the work-yard. The elimination of ground removal caused by traditional pile excavations; means there
is an absence of backfill material which would be difficult to dispose of and process in special dumping grounds,
involving expensive costs especially when inherent to polluting material;
4. No need to build work floors and relative accesses for equipment transit and operations needed for traditional piles;
this results in the absence of further ground removal for the work floors and, therefore, the absence of problems
connected to the search for material in mines, and the disposal and processing of the material in special dumping
sites;
5. Possibility of operating in polluted sites since by regulating and monitoring the injected micro concrete pressure
(which may be always kept higher than the water pressure that is present in the ground), there is absolutely no
problem regarding the communication between water-bearing layers at various levels;
6. Can be used in the case of layers in pressure considering the perfect watertight seal of the injected micro concrete;
7. Reduced dimensions of the driving equipment, with less invasion and therefore minor environmental impact within
the operations area. Therefore the possibility to work in spaces that are reduced both width-wise and height-wise,
with the elimination of temporary infrastructures and shifting of obstacles, i.e. electric overhead lines, etc.;
8. Elimination of final construction, maintenance, cleaning and demolition of the tanks for the preparation of bentonite
slurries in the case of mud-drilling;
9. There is no need for cutting off of the pile heads, which means the absence of additional material to be disposed and
processed in special dumping grounds;
10. Possibility of operating adjacent to and/or on road works without particular restrictions to traffic (deviations, lane
reduction, etc.) due to the absence of vibrations and the use of reduced-dimension machinery that are always
anchored to the foundations (impossible to be overturned). This means a lesser degree of noise pollution and a
reduced amount of exhaust emissions within the operations and surrounding areas.
A further aspect of fundamental importance for respecting and protecting the environment is that the Soles piles are
piles possessing a high bearing capacity. This is due to the fact that:
- compared to drilling piles, they do not produce ground extraction and therefore the soil, due to the fact that
external micro cement is pressurized upon insertion, is strongly compacted and adherent to the lateral
surface of the Soles pile, with a consequent greater lateral bearing capacity;
- compared to the driven-piles in steel, the adherence of the pile to the ground does not take place through a
metallic surface (tube), but rather through a corrugated concrete surface (micro concrete), with consequent
greater adhesion coefficients and, therefore, a greater lateral bearing capacity.
The final result is that, for high bearing capacity piles such as the Soles piles, there is a need for a reduced overall
amount of piles and, therefore, an inferior quantity of material making up the pile itself (inert material, cement, steel).
This leads to the consequent reduction in material use that is more and more difficult to track down and the relative
reduction in energy necessary for their production.
Also, the possibility of concentrating a greater load within a small framework allows for a reduced size and, therefore,
reduced volume of the foundations and relative excavations – to the benefit of the environment.
Therefore, by producing small infrastructures that are highly resistant, it contributes to the safeguarding of the
environment; i.e. saving inert stones and cement for the production of concrete compared to high technologies where
the use of inert material would be greatly increased.

- l’elemento di guida;
L’elemento guida, infatti, viene inserito all’interno della

• senza dar luogo ad alcuna vibrazione;
• senza creare allentamenti del suolo o produrre materiali di risulta;
• senza generare rumori molesti o richiedere movimenti di terra;
sistematicamente rilevate e registrate, su appositi moduli e
penetrometrica statica e quindi idoneo a fornire indicazioni precise
Unlike the standard Soles pile, the driving of the Soles H-beam pile
doesn’t include the injection of the micro-concrete during the driving
operation and the use of a base flange, therefore the H-beam profile
adheres to the soil during the driving operation.
Prevention from corrosion is obtained considering sacrificial
thickness (depending on the soil and provided by the current code)
during the design phase.
The equipment for installation, which essentially consists of two long-
stroke, high-power hydraulic jacks which, when anchored to the bars
connected with the pile driving assembly, statically drive the steel
H-beam profiles into the ground, doing so in a progressive mode:
• without producing any vibrations;

In other words, with an absolute lack of any type of side-effect that
could possibly disturb the area where the pile is being installed or
pollute the environment.
During the driving operation of the H-beam profile, the pressures developed by the hydraulic thrust system are systematically
measured and registered on special forms, one pile at a time, generating a diagram entirely similar to a static penetration test,
making it ideal for obtaining precise and certain indications on the characteristics of the limit load-bearing capacity of the pile.
The pile driving operation continues until the depth called for in the plans is reached, or until the thrust is rejected for the
working load-bearing levels assigned to it.
Once the pile driving has been completed, the standard procedure calls for the locking of the pile driving assembly with a thick

As it is clear from the above description, once the construction of the
SOLES pile has been completed, customers are not required to carry out
further costly operations, such as:
• cut off of the pile heads
• recovery of the reinforcement rods
• removal of waste materials and transport to a dumping site.
esercizio adiacenti alle zone di intervento;
qualsiasi fonte di inquinamento acustico nei confronti dell’ambiente di lavoro e/o delle zone abitative adiacenti;
costruzione che eventuale rimozione;
eliminazione di qualsiasi opera provvisionale o necessità di rimozione di ostacoli;
trattare in apposite discariche;
• possibilità di operare in aderenza a strutture abitative e/o su corpi stradali senza particolari limitazioni di traffico;
deviazioni, riduzioni di carreggiata, occupazione di suolo pubblico, ecc;
In summary, in terms of the features specifically tied to protection and respect of the environment, the Soles H-beam
pile offers the following advantages:
• absolute lack of vibrations; the piles are driven by hydraulic devices operating with static thrust, offering the greatest
possible guarantee of stability and safety for structures, embankments and underlying facilities adjoining the working
areas;
• elimination of noise; all the devices operate electrically, with hydraulic drives. This means that there are no sources
of possible noise, pollution for the working environment or surrounding areas;
• absence of any excavation work or extraction of soil; there is no waste material whose accumulation and disposal
can prove difficult and costly, the operating and service areas of the worksite can be kept extremely clean, all the
earth moving that takes place when piles are drilled is eliminated;
• there is no need for special working surfaces or the related access roads; these items are absolutely necessary to
guarantee safe transit and operating efficiency of the equipment required to construct traditional piles. It follows that
there is no need for additional structures or earth moving, which greatly simplifies the activities and difficulties tied to
the procurement of materials and their subsequent removal and hauling away;
• reduced size of the pile-driving equipment, this results in reduced invasiveness and environmental impact in the
work area. It is possible to operate in spaces of limited size, in terms of both width and height, without the need for
provisional structures, the removal of obstacles the deactivation of electric power lines etc.;
• elimination of the cut off of the heads of the piles; this means that additional expenses, as well as materials to be
processed and disposed of, are eliminated;
• possibility of operating in the vicinity of lived in buildings or embankments and/or roadways;
without having to place excessive limitations on traffic (detours, reduction in lanes etc.) on account of the non
invasiveness of the operations tied to the construction of the Soles H-beam piles;
• almost complete elimination of heavy vehicular traffic; the use of H-beam profiles, driven without the extraction
of soil, allows for the drastic reduction of heavy lorries otherwise necessary in the traditional retaining walls for
the transportation of materials in authorized dumping site and for the supply of big quantity of cement, sand,
precompresso;
dell’edificio in profondità e sostenere il terreno lungo il perimetro;
nuovi locali;
reinforcements, etc. The use of this technology also means a reduction in exhaust gas and vehicular traffic in the vicinity of
the building site.
The result is the structural strengthening of the building and the construction, at the same time, of new underground locals
beneath the existing building with economical advantages and reduction in time construction.

costanti, strutture, monumenti, infrastrutture (metropolitane, ferrovie, condutture, sottoservizi ecc.
codici riportati nelle normative vigenti.
Retaining walls for the excavations in open ground but especially in urban environments with surrounding buildings,
monuments, infrastructures (subways, railways, pipelines, etc.) can be achieved with the absence of vibration, noise
and removal of soil thanks to Soles technology.
In fact, in addition to retaining walls using circular cross-section piles, Soles achieves retaining walls, type “Soldier Pile
wall” through the static driving of steel H-beam elements .
The reaction to the thrust is taken from any existing structures or from reinforced concrete beams appropriately sized
and including the pile driving assemblies used by the driving machinery in order to drive the steel H-beams using
hydraulic jacks.
To reduce the free portion of the retaining wall in the excavation phase, the “top - down” method can be used which
allows to rationalize the various stages of construction in the underground works. Prevention from corrosion is
obtained considering sacrificial thickness (depending on the soil and provided by the current code) during the design
phase.

progettazione esecutiva dell’intervento.
• Ricostruzione del solaio di calpestio del piano terra, mediante realizzazione di platee con tecnologia di compressione;
profondità;
• Scavo del locale interrato con risanamento delle vecchie fondazioni e costruzione dei nuovi locali;
Soles has applied for and obtained patents and techniques for the construction of underground structures, such as
cellars or garages, in already existing buildings. The careful study and development of the special applications of
the Soles pile , coupled with the technology of compression of concrete with stretching of cords after compression
have made it possible to construct under-ground structures - i.e. below the existing foundations - even in adverse
conditions. From the data gathered in almost all the cases under study, the executive project maybe summarised as
follows:
• Reconstruction of the underground flooring, with platforms made with compression technology;
• Temporary works done with static insertion technology with the purpose of conveying the overall weight of the
building down to the depth;
• Excavation of the underground rooms and reconstruction of the old foundation structures and building of new rooms;
• Whenever necessary, removal of the worksdone. The overall result obtained is that of static consolidation of the
foundation as well as the construction of new rooms with advantages in execution time and economical

New Release 2012
1. Sollevamento di manufatti
Raising of structures
geometriche e peso, grazie all’uso di martinetti idraulici cosiddetti “a sabbia”.
This involves the vertical hoisting of buildings of different types, geometrical shapes and weights with that use of
hydraulic jacks called “sand jacks” . One important application of this technique took place in the city of Trent, where
the project known as TAV (i.e. High Speed Trains) by the National Railway authorities, required the demolition and
the reconstruction of an entire flyover bridge. The bridge had to be rebuilt with a reduction in the thickness but it was
mandatory that the train service should not be disrupted while work was in progress. This job required hoisting the
scaffolding structure for about 2 m before demolition was carried out with the purpose of building a shield to protect
the railway line below. This made it possible for the work to be done in perfect safety and to continue working without
any disrupting in the railway service.

The “Rialto Project” is a technological application proposal for effective maintenance, restructuring and
consolidation operations within Venetian buildings with the aim of dealing with the high-water problem.
The “Rialto Project” provides for the mechanical hoisting of a building by laying down a reinforced concrete bed at
ground level, capable of distributing the weight of the building upon a new foundation structure. By using a system
of hydraulic jacks between the concrete bed and new foundations it is possible to achieve the strength necessary for
hoisting an entire building without compromising its integrity.
The “Rialto Project” is part of the integrative and synergic operations for saving Venice, with the aim of precise
hoisting of buildings.
The project is made up of operations that may be assimilated within the urban maintenance work field.
STRONG POINTS of the “Rialto Project” are:
• Soles Piles ( main element and the reaction point of the hoisting)
The Soles Piles are statically driven and thanks to their particular characteristics they reduce negative interferences
within the geological environment and urban “air – water – ground” ecosystem
• The reinforced mat foundation (that connects the structure and distributes the weight upon the new pile
foundation.

if necessary
To achieve the seismic isolation is necessary to create a structural
discontinuity in the building so as to separate the structure from the wave
motion of the ground. This discontinuity is realized with the insertion of
seismic isolators, reducing the transmission of the earthquake energy to the
structures, with drastic reduction of the accelerations acting on the structural
masses and the absence of sharp fluctuations in the structure thanks to the
increasing of the natural vibration period of the building (lateral translational
motion almost stiff). The latter effect causes the important advantage of a
lower perception of the earthquake by the people in the isolated building
(reduction of panic especially in crowded environments such as schools
and hospitals), and the absence of damage to nonstructural elements with
minimization of the economic risk related to the construction cost of repairs

dell’invaso.
SOLES, is renowned and appreciated for its reinforced pre-compressed concrete water towers.
The tanks of the SOLES reservoirs are manufactured at ground level and are then progressively raised up to their
operational level (even over forty metres in height) with the use of special hydraulic jacks at the same time as the
construction of the underpinning column.
The structure of the SOLES reinforced pre-compressed concrete water towers, during the manufacturing process, is
divided into three particular stages:
- preparation of the foundation structure;
- construction of the tank;
- raising of the tank at the same time as the implementation of the underpinning column.
The choice of concrete for the production of the water towers was suggested by our experience in this specific sector, for
the particular long-lasting duration of the product and for the absence of maintenance on behalf of the consumer.
The shape of the tank, in its essential outline, is the result of very sophisticated calculations and of unprecedented
technological breakthroughs.
The SOLES Water TowersTM, thanks to the use of high-resistance steel post tension cables wires, offer exceptional
mechanical resistance with a reduced thickness of the structure; while at the same time offering remarkable financial
savings.
The tower has been planned to withstand even the most important natural stress, such as that produced by seismic
phenomena. During such events, the concrete water towers guarantee a safe reservoir of water to be used in case of
natural calamities.
It is an ecologically-friendly and economical construction. Through the filling of the tank at night, energy expenses
are diminished. Additionally, since its functions are according to simple laws of Physics, the towers have no need for
maintenance.
The SOLES Concrete Water TowersTM have become leaders in this sector because of their recognized reliability. It’s
possible to install on the tank devices for the production of alternative energy in order to make the loading of the tank
autonomous with regard to the energy.

The Soles methodology for the testing of pile foundations originates from a
peculiar application of the Soles piles technology.
The method was first used for load tests on Soles piles and now, thanks to its
versatility, it is efficiently carried out also for load tests on traditional piles.
The first execution step is the cutting off of the pile head and the creation of
a perfectly horizontal surface where the patented Soles Pile Driving Assembly
is positioned. Around the Pile Driving Assembly, corrugated steel pipes are
placed to protect the longitudinal bars of the pile, previously aligned, so

per livellazione avoiding the accidental insertion of the concrete in the corrugated steel tubes.
Detail of the centesimal gauge It’s possible after this stage to start the construction of the superstructure.
The machinery for carrying out the load test is directly connected to the Pile
Driving Assembly by steel wedges, so that the foundation structure and the
superstructure (if constructed ) can give the necessary reaction working as a
kentledge.
