TRUE STORIES Last month, we asked you to tell us about mistakes you made at school or
work and what you learned from them. Here is this month’s winning article.
Our school organized very good after-school activities. Last year I went to two clubs, the music club
and the drama club. It was my first year in the music club: it was one hour on Mondays
and Wednesdays. It was my second year in the drama club: it was an hour and a half on
Tuesdays and Thursdays. 1 _______ It didn’t matter because there wasn’t much school work to do.
In October, they told us about the end of year school play. 2 _______ I was very excited when they
asked me to play one of the most important parts. Then, in November, the music teacher asked me to
play the piano in the end of year concert. I was surprised because my piano playing isn’t very good.
Everything was fine before Christmas because I did a lot of school work at the weekend.
3
_______ Then, in January, I went to a friend’s birthday party and met a girl called
Heather. We started talking and I asked her out. After that, I didn’t have any free Fridays or
Saturdays because I was with Heather. I was still OK, though. I stopped watching TV and only
switched on my computer once a week. That was my life until April but then things became difficult.
The drama teacher organized an extra practice on Fridays, the music teacher asked
me to practise at home over the weekend and Heather wanted to go for walks on Sundays
because the weather was nice. In addition, we got more homework and tests every week in
preparation for our end of year exams. I usually have a good memory but this was too much for me.
My test marks were really bad and my parents were worried: they asked me to stop seeing Heather
for a while. 4 _______ In the end, Heather left me, I failed my exams and the music teacher said
that I wasn’t good enough to be in the concert. The play went well, but I nearly fell asleep in
the middle of it. 5 _______ Not to try to do so many things at one time!
Ian Hodge, aged 17

Disposable plastic bags are small things, but they are big news at the moment. Every year, we
use 500 billion worldwide. In the UK alone, consumers get through over 13 billion bags a year –
that’s enough to fill 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools – over 400 bags per household!
We use most plastic bags for an average of just 20 minutes before we throw them into the
rubbish, but they then take hundreds of years to decompose. While they decompose, they kill
animals and produce greenhouse gases. However, the fight against plastic bags is growing.
A In the 1980s, a movement against plastic bags began in Bangladesh, where old plastic bags
blocked drains and caused floods. In 2002, it became the first country to completely ban plastic
bags. Other countries followed – Rwanda in 2005, Kenya in 2007 and China in 2008. However,
things have been slower in developed countries.
B In 2002, Ireland introduced a 33% tax on plastic bags so they cost 15 pence instead of
being free. The result? People started buying and using cloth bags and within six weeks, use
of plastic bags dropped by a staggering 94%. Experts estimate that each cloth bag saves a
thousand plastic ones so this is a huge step forward.
C The village of Modbury in England became the first place in England to completely ban
plastic bags in 2007. When a local filmmaker, Rebecca Hosking, went to Hawaii to make a film
she was horrified to see the environmental devastation caused by thousands of plastic bags.
After she returned home she showed her film to the local shopkeepers and persuaded them to
stop using plastic bags. Several other towns and cities copied the idea. San Francisco became
the first place in the USA to ban bags later that same year.
Classe ___________
Data _____________
D In the past, Italy used 20 billion bags a year (20% of all European use), but since a ban
went into place on January 1, 2011, stores in Italy have only offered paper, biodegradable or
cloth bags. It is the first European country to completely ban plastic bags. Now the European
Commission is considering a Europe-wide approach to plastic bags: this could include total bans
on single-use carrier bags.
E Plastic bags are slowly beginning to disappear all over the world. As
Italy’s Environment Minister said, ‘Sustainability is made of little changes to our
lifestyles: they don’t cost us anything and can save the
planet. Let’s hope that one day in the future we will only
see plastic bags in museums.’

social networking site – well, there are over 200 million active users (400 million if you listen to
some people). It’s really nice to see photos of my friends and read what they are doing. I really
miss them! I like the fact that it’s instant too. You just have to write something or upload a photo
and click on the button and it’s there.
C Mark: I love YouTube!! It only started in 2005 but about 100 million people use it every day!
I’m in a band and I upload videos of our songs. Maybe someone will hear them and we’ll become
famous. It’s happened to other people, so why not us? I love listening to music. You can find
anything you want there. I’ve discovered lots of new singers and cool bands. I download lots of
clips too.
D Ruth: The Internet, definitely. I’m one of the 1.5 billion people who use it every day. I’m a
reporter and I use it to find information. I hate it when my computer crashes and I can’t get on-
line. I send a lot of emails too. I follow some forums. They’re useful to find out what people are
thinking. I love the fact that I can sit on a train and surf the Internet. When I started we only used
the telephone or interviewed people face to face when we wrote articles – what a difference!
E Thomas: Letters. I think they’re the best way to communicate. I know they’re becoming
increasingly rare these days, because they’re not instant like email or texts. However, I think
they’re more honest. I read a report that said that people lie 50% more in emails than in hand-
written letters. That doesn’t surprise me. I love receiving letters and opening them. I read them
over and over again. I don’t think it’s the same with emails.

ONTARIO: A SPORTS HOLIDAY PARADISE! Adventure sports fans love variety, excitement
and the natural world and Ontario in Canada is a great place to find all of these. Not only that, heavy
snowfalls in winter and sunny skies in summer mean it’s an all-year-round place to go. So, if you’re
looking for a great sports holiday, check these ideas out.
A WHITE WATER RAFTING – There are 1,200 km of Ottawa River to raft on, although most
rafting takes place on a 12 km stretch. If you are an expert and have your own raft, you can go
where you want. However, most people choose to go with a company: you can organise days
out or short trips with a guide. These guides know the river very well and will make sure your
experience is safe and enjoyable as well as lasting and thrilling. Hold on tight!

B KAYAKING AND CANOEING – Ontario is a province of rivers and lakes and kayaking or
canoeing gives you the chance to reach remote areas. There are thousands of lakes with islands
where you can camp. And there are 1,600 km of routes: you can use them to get to beautiful
areas of Ontario’s national parks such as Algonquin. If you don’t fancy that, you could go on a trip
round the Mink Islands. You can camp or stay in luxury lodges (small hotels). This is one of the
most popular adventure sports on offer and perhaps the most rewarding.
C DIVING – You thought Australia was the best place for scuba
diving? Then think again! The Thousand Islands region has warm crystal
water and there’s lots to see – from shipwrecks to great marine life. You
can do dives from the beach or go out further and try deep water diving
down to 30 metres. There are plenty of diving schools so both beginners
and qualified divers can enjoy this experience.

Paul Foot was a famous British journalist. He was born in 1937 to a famous family. Both his
grandfather and uncle were politicians. He went to a public school which he hated, and studied
at Oxford where he wrote articles for a student newspaper.
At the time he was studying law: he was always interested in the subject, but he
never worked as a lawyer. In later years, he used his knowledge of the law to help people
who were sent to prison unfairly. In 1961, after he finished his studies, he went to work as a
journalist in Glasgow, Scotland. This was his first full-time job and, while there, he met
workers from local factories and talked to them about their lives and jobs. From then
on, he fought for workers’ rights against big businesses and the government.
In 1967, Paul Foot started working full-time for the twice-monthly publication, Private Eye. This
is a well-known newspaper in Britain which publishes stories other newspapers are too scared
to print. Paul Foot was paid much less for this work than for his work with normal,
daily papers, but he didn’t mind because he was given much more freedom to write
what he wanted. He left Private Eye twice to work on different publications but, both times, he
returned again to the paper because he loved it.
Paul Foot won several awards: he was journalist of the year in 1972 and 1989. He died in
2004, but his memory lives on. In 2005, Private Eye and another newspaper, The
Guardian, started up the Paul Foot Award for journalism. Six British journalists whose
work over the year has been important are chosen for the final. Five of them receive a prize of
£1,000 and the overall winner gets £5,000.
The winners aren’t always well-known or working for national newspapers. The first
two winners were from the Daily Mail and The Sunday Telegraph, but the third, in 2007, was a
journalist on the Doncaster Free Press newspaper, a small weekly newspaper from a town in the
North of England. That was for her articles on a local education organisation which cost millions
of pounds but didn’t provide a good service for local students. Her work was typical of what
Paul Foot thought of as ‘real’ journalism. She shared a small office and was only on a part-time
contract, but she managed to put a story together that shocked everyone who read it.
These days, when newspapers are full of celebrity gossip, fashion tips and ‘news’ about the
latest reality or talent show, the Paul Foot Award helps us to remember that journalism should be
about stories that matter and that can change the world.

Lucky number – In the 1930s in New York there was a terrible accident when a train fell off a bridge.
The photo that appeared in the newspaper showed one of the carriages involved in the disaster. The
carriage number 932 was visible in the photo. Thousands of people who saw the photo chose that
number for the next day’s lottery – and to their amazement they won! If the accident hadn’t happened
and they hadn’t seen the photo they wouldn’t have chosen that number.

Lightning strikes … three times – If your father and grandfather had both been killed by lightning
in exactly the same place in your garden, would you ever have stood there too? For most people, the
answer is no, but Rolla Primarda did exactly that. His grandfather died in 1899 and his father in 1929.
And guess what happened to Rolla? He was also killed by lightning in the exact same spot in 1959. All
the tragedies were exactly 30 years apart! The family has to be the unluckiest family in Taranto in Italy –
or indeed anywhere in the world. If I’d been Rolla, I’d have moved house!
And this book belongs to … – Anne Parrish, an American writer, was looking at books in a second-
hand bookshop in Paris when she found a book that she used to love as a child. She showed the book
to her husband. Imagine their surprise when he opened it to find an inscription inside that said ‘Anne
Parrish, 209 N. Weber Street, Colorado Springs’. It was Anne’s old copy of the book that she’d owned
as a child!
A lucky escape – Walter Kellner, a German from Munich, had a lucky escape when the plane he
was flying had engine trouble and crashed into the water. Kellner was rescued and later wrote about
his lucky escape and won a writing competition held by the magazine Das Besteran in 1979. An angry
Austrian man wrote to the paper and said that Kellner had copied the story because exactly the same
thing had happened to him. The man’s name? Walter Kellner! The magazine checked both men’s
stories and they were both true.
It’s all in the name – In 1911 three men murdered Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, and they were caught
by the police the same year. At the trial they were sentenced to death, and they were hanged on the
26th November in London. They were executed at a place called Greenberry Hill. In a curious
coincidence, the murderers were called Robert Green, Henry Berry and Lawrence Hill (= Greenberry Hill).
