Lesson Content Description:


Students will be identifying the countries and alliances that
were established for WWI. They will be working with a map and
color coding the countries. Students will also identify the causes
of WWI, using the acronym of MANIA.

CA History Frameworks
This insecurity led these powers to form alliances, which embroiled the great
powers of Europe in a multi-year conflict that included soldiers from many parts of
the world.
Students should learn about the complexity of why and how each state justified its
entry into the war.

Common Core Lesson Objective:


Students will be able to identify the causes and alliances that led to the beginning
of World War I through map identification and guided notes.
Assessment:
Formative: Students will be assessed on their understanding through verbal
responses during class, as well as their notes summary.

Agenda on the screen previews the day and homework due dates
Warm-up: CNN 10 gives students current events
Students will respond to the CNN 10 video with a summary and personal reaction
I will review the causes of WWI that they learned from before break
MANIA- militarism, alliances, nationalism, imperialism, assassination

Technology used to create and enhance the introduction to this lesson: Video, Google
slides

Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective


I will then introduce their map activity, and connect it to the alliances cause of WWI

Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective: Gradual Release of


Instruction
Students will then use their textbook to identify countries, seas, and an ocean of
Europe prior to WWI beginning
They will also color code the alliances and neutral countries (15 minutes to
complete)
Then, we will begin the guided note taking of how WWI begins

There will be formative questions that I will randomly call on students to answer.
I will also have students pair and share to respond to the question- which part of
MANIA do you think had the most impact on WWI?

Students will then need to review their notes and revise them with highlighting and
marking up their notes
They will then need to summarize their notes in 3-5 sentences to show they
understand the main ideas.
