SCLEROMETRO PER
CALCESTRUZZO
Manuale duso
lindice torna a zero.

CONCRETE
SCLEROMETER
Users manual
The sclerometer is used for the non-destructive testing of the castings. Shock hardness is measured during
the tests, which depends from the resistance of the agglomerate (concrete without large aggregates or sand
pockets close to the surface).
The use of the sclerometer allows to examine rapidly the concretes (B) approximative compressive strength in
the different positions of a construction.
10) A slight pressure on the tip of the percussion rod unlocks the rod which comes out of the instrument; at
this point the sclerometer is ready for the measurements.
11) The percussion rod is to be pressed against the surface of the concrete (B) which is to be examined.
Just before it re-enters almost entirely the blow is dealt by the hammer which has been released. The releasing
mechanism is activated by means of a slow increase of pressure.
At the moment of the blow the instrument is to be held perpendicular to the surface of the concrete (B). DONT
PRESS THE SIDE-BUTTON when the hammer blow is being released.
12) Maintaining the instrument pressed against the surface being examined, the recoil value R can be read
by means of the pointer on the graduated scale.
Once removed from the measuring point, the instrument is again ready for a new test while in the maintime the
pointer returns to zero.
13) After the use of the sclerometer the percussion rod is to be blocked inside of the instrument.
To do this a hammer blow is dealt and THEN the side-button is pressed, removing the instrument.
The locking also fixes the pointer enabling to remove the instrument when it is in an uncomfortable position
and then proceed with the reading.
14) The sclerometer is calibrated for operation in horizontal position, that is to examine vertical surfaces. A
correction of the Ra. reading is necessary for non-horizontal tests, because the gravity component acting on
the striking weight is to be taken into consideration. The eight supplementary curves of the diagram take this
into consideration. For example from a test carried out on a floor, that is with the instrument in downward
vertical position (a = -90) giving a value of 35, we obtain, by means of the diagram, a compressive strength on
the cube of 400 Kg/cm2. the same value 35 would instead represent a resistance of 320 Kg/cm2 with the
instrument in an horizontal position, against a vertical wall, and a resistance of 220 Kg/cm2 with the instrument
in an upward vertical position, against a ceiling (a = +90).
Correction of the sclerometers indications for non-horizontal percussion Ra.
15) Choosing of measuring points: porous and irregular areas, sand and gravel pockets, the large
aggregates and mould joints should be avoided. Particular care is necessary when evaluating the results of
walls with thickness inferior to 10 cm because the elasticity of the casting can alter the indications of the
instrument. It is to be kept in mind that in a bad quality concrete castings the resistance decreases
considerably from the bottom upwards. Prepare accurately the surfaces to be examined using the attached
hand grinding wheel, until the concretes normal structure is reached. A 10 x 10 cm surface is necessary for
about 10 test blows.
It is necessary to make the R mean of about 10 readings eliminating the values which differ considerably
(more than 5 scale units) and substituting these values with new tests.
17) The following cases present some differences with respect to the calibrating curves: cinstructive works
in which the concretes composition is unusual with aggregates of light, breaking, not too resistant rocks, with
clay, poor of sand, not well amalgamated, still humid, recently dismantled or with an eccessively smooth
surface.
18) Important: one cannot rely solely on the strength tests obtained with the only sclerometer.
