Welcome to our city. During this period, mass

tourism in Venice is low, allowing our beautiful
city to present you with its most charming and
evocative side. Art, culture, high water, gondolas,
and gondoliers are all its protagonists. In this issue,
as always, we will fill you in on the best you can
experience on a gastronomic level, and then we
make way for other gems the Veneto region has
in store for you. A region with a long tradition in
history, art, and culture.

L'isola pi bella di Venezia la

Una giornata alla scoperta di una zona poco battuta dai turisti,
ma molto aascinante

C un'isola che troppo spesso viene bistrattata dai veneziani

stessi e che invece pu dare vita ad una delle migliori giornate
da passare in laguna a spasso tra arte contemporanea, piatti
gourmet e locali alla moda.
Ore 11:00 giro alla Casa dei Tre Oci

All'onore delle cronache qualche mese fa per aver ospitato la
mostra di Salgado, stata nalmente conosciuta dal grande
pubblico come merita. Un palazzetto dei primi del Novecento
con un bel restauro contemporaneo. Le mostre in corso, che
durano no all8 gennaio 2017, sono Ren Burri. Utopia,
realizzata da Magnum Photos in collaborazione con Civita
Tre Venezie e curata da Michael Koetzle, e Ferdinando
Scianna. Il Ghetto di Venezia 500 anni dopo, curata da Denis
Curti. I biglietti sono da 10/12 euro e gli orari sono tutti i
giorni dalle 10 alle 19 tranne il marted che chiuso.

ore 17:00 un gelato da Harry's Dolci
Torno verso la punta dell'isola, ma mi fermo da Harry's Dolci,
il ristorante di Cipriani alla Giudecca. Mi piace, almeno una
volta l'anno, venire qui per una coppa di gelato con la vista
sul canale. Il gelato (ma che te lo dico a fare) sublime.
ore 20:30 cena da Bacaromi
Per la cena decido di avviarmi verso di lHilton. Il Bacaromi
il ristorante/bacaro all'interno del grande hotel e ha
davvero un rapporto qualit prezzo da non sottovalutare. Si
mangia veneziano, ma un po' pi chic che altrove. Il bancone
fatto con i lacerti di un vecchio ponte, le lampade artigianali,
la struttura dello storico Molino Stucky riportata a vista.
Su tre lavagne all'ingresso si legge il menu, che varia ogni
giorno. Tranne il piatto della casa: fritto misto e pasta e fasoi.
Un buon compromesso per provare l'atmosfera dell'Hilton
senza sforare dal budget di una cena.

Conosciuta come una delle osterie con le migliori polpette di
tutta Venezia, fare la pausa pranzo Ae Botti vuol dire
entrare in un pezzo di storia della citt. Mi accomodo nella
sala interna, perch la veranda bella ma nella mezza
stagione preferisco il calduccio.
Questo il locale di riferimento per l'aperitivo dell'isola della
Giudecca grazie agli ottimi vini e alla ricchezza di cicchetti
tipici veneziani, tra i quali le "polpettine della nonna". Ottimo
anche per una cena all'insegna della cucina casalinga e di
piatti tipici veneziani
ore 14:30: Il Redentore
Ritemprata decido di camminare no al Redentore, attraversando un paio di fondamenta a piedi. Nessuno si ricorda mai
che la Chiesa del Redentore un'opera del Palladio e quasi

Per il dopocena rimango allHilton ma mi sposto al bar sul
tetto del palazzo. Sabato e gioved sono le giornate giuste per
venire allo Skyline (anche se qualcuno sostiene che sempre
la giornata giusta). Al sabato l'happy hour dura no a tardi.
Il resto magia. Lo Skyline uno dei miei locali preferiti per
il suo stile e gusto contemporanei: luci a led nascoste fanno
cambiare colore al locale a intervalli regolari, sedie uo per
la terrazza e opere darte dallimpatto psichedelico. In assoluto questo il punto pi alto da cui ammirare Venezia.

11:00am Visit to the Casa dei Tre Oci

In the news a few months ago for having hosted the Salgado
exhibition, the Casa dei Tre Oci nally received the acknowledgement it duly deserved by the general public. A building that
dates back to the early twentieth century, which was restored
in a beautifully contemporary style. The current exhibitions
being shown, which run until January 8th, 2017, are Ren Burri.
Utopia, created by Magnum Photos in collaboration with Civita
Tre Venezie and curated by Michael Koetzle, and Ferdinando
Scianna. Il Ghetto di Venezia 500 Anni Dopo - The Venice Ghetto
- 500 Years Later, curated by Denis Curti. Tickets are 10-12 Euros.
Visiting hours: every day 10am 7pm. Closed Tuesday.
1:30pm Lunch at Ae Botti
Known as one of the taverns with the best meatballs in all of
Venice, having lunch at Ae Botti means entering into a piece
of the citys history. Although their outdoor patio is beautiful, I
prefer sitting inside, since I like to keep warm during midseason.
This is the in place for cocktails on Giudecca island, thanks to
its excellent wines and the abundance of typical Venetian sides,
cicchetti, including grandma's meatballs. Also great for a
home cooked dinner with typical Venetian dishes.

Now refreshed, I decide to walk up to the Redentore, crossing

a couple of fondamenta by foot. No one ever remembers that
Chiesa del Redentore the Church of the Redeemer is a work
by Palladio and hardly anyone ever visits it, except during the
Feast of the Redeemer in July.

5:00pm - Ice cream at Harrys Dolci

I return to the tip of the island but stop by Harrys Dolci, Ciprianis restaurant in Giudecca. I like to come here at least once a
year for ice cream, with a view of the canal. An ice cream that
is sublime

There is an island that is very often mistreated by the Venetians

themselves and, instead, it is one that may give way to one of the
best days youll spend in the lagoon, among contemporary art,
gourmet dishes, and fashionable clubs and restaurants.

8:30pm Dinner at Bacaromi

For dinner, I decided to head towards the Hilton. The Bacaromi
is the bacaro-restaurant located in the grand hotel, and a real
value for your money you shouldnt underestimate Venetian dining is the word here, but a bit more chic than other bacaros.
The counter is made from with fragments of an old bridge, the
lamps are handcrafted, the structure of the historical Molino
Stucky brought back to its glory. The menu is set out on three
blackboards at the entrance, and it changes every day. except
for the House Special: mixed fried dish and pasta e fasoi - pasta
with beans. A good compromise if you want to experience the
Hilton atmosphere, without blowing your budget for dinner.
10:00pm - After dinner at the Skyline
I remain at the Hilton after dinner, but move to the bar on the
rooftop. Saturdays and Thursdays are the best days to come
to the Skyline although some argue that every day is the best
day. Happy hour on Saturdays lasts late. The rest is magic. The
Skyline is one of my favorite places because of its contemporary style and taste: hidden LED lights change color at regular
intervals, uorescent chairs on the terrace, and artwork with a
psychedelic impact. By far, this is the highest point from which
you can admire Venice.

Alla ricerca dei Ca Storici di Venezia, rivivendo per un

pomeriggio la routine dei pi importanti poeti, scrittori e
loso della letteratura italiana.
1^ tappa - Ca Florian
Questo ca non storia, LA storia. Ca Florian
unistituzione per la Serenissima. stato inaugurato il 29
dicembre 1720 ed il ca pi antico del mondo. Vi hanno fatto
visita loso e poeti internazionali, tra cui Carlo Goldoni, Ugo
Foscolo, Charles Dickens. Gli arredamenti interni in stile settecentesco, i camerieri vestiti in livrea e lorchestra di musica
classica che suona dal vivo completano lesperienza di questo
pregiato pezzo darte.

4^ tappa - Harrys Bar

Un locale conosciuto in tutto il mondo, fondato nel 1931 da
Giuseppe Cipriani. Oltre ad essere famoso per la ricetta del Bellini, probabilmente il cocktail pi rappresentativo di Venezia,
questo locale anche un pezzo di storia della citt. Truman Capote, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway e Peggy Guggenheim
sono solo alcuni dei nomi che hanno frequentato lHarrys Bar.
5^ tappa - Ca del Doge

La torrefazione artigiana veneziana Ca del Doge stata
fondata nel 1952 e si trova a due passi dal Ponte di Rialto.
Si distingue per le pregiate selezioni di ca. Il personale
molto disponibile a spiegare le caratteristiche dei vari ca
provenienti da tutto il mondo. Un consiglio da tenere a mente
quello di berlo senza zucchero per esaltarne laroma.
6^ tappa - Ca Lavena
In Piazza San Marco, una delle pi rinomate botteghe da
ca di Venezia. Fondato nel 1750 il locale presenta gli arredi e i
ranati dettagli di quel secolo ancora in ottimo stato. Nella sua
storia stato frequentato soprattutto da artisti e musicisti, tra
cui Richard Wagner che lo deniva il ca migliore di Venezia.

2^ tappa - Torrefazione Cannaregio

Se sei amante e soprattutto intenditore, Torrefazione Cannaregio la Disneyland del ca. Un ambiente piacevolissimo che
ti porta indietro nel tempo, direttamente nelle vecchie boutique
del ca tipiche degli anni 30. Aascinanti sono le vecchie
strumentazioni che i gestori utilizzano per creare un ca
artigianale gustoso e a prezzo contenuto.
3^ tappa - Gran Ca Quadri

Sono davanti ad un altro incredibile pezzo di storia. Gran Ca
Quadri nasce infatti poco dopo Ca Florian, nel 1775, fondato
dal mercante veneziano Giorgio Quadri. un locale che
allinterno contiene una slza di ricordi che passano dallepoca
della Repubblica della Serenissima alla nascita dellet moderna. Il Ca ha ospitato personaggi del calibro di Stendhal,
Alexandre Dumas, Marcel Proust, no ad essere la meta di
celebrit ed artisti contemporanei come Woody Allen. La vista
su Piazza San Marco spettacolare.

On a quest for the Historical Cafs of Venice, reliving an afternoon along the footpaths of the most important poets, writers,
and philosophers from Italian literature.
This caf is not just history. It is history with a capital H. Ca

Florian is an institution for the Serenissima. It was inaugurated
on December 29th, 1720, and it is the oldest caf in the world. It
has been visited by international philosophers and poets, such as
Carlo Goldoni, Ugo Foscolo, and Charles Dickens. The furnishings
are eighteenth-century, the waiters dress in livery, and the classical
orchestra playing live music completes the overall experience of
this ne piece of art.
2nd stop - Torrefazione Cannaregio

If you are a lover, and especially a connoisseur, Torrefazione Cannaregio is the Disneyland of coee. A pleasant atmosphere that
takes you back in time, directly back to the old coee shops that
were typical in the 1930s. Fascinating are the old tools and equipment used to create a moderately priced, but tasty artisanal coee.

3rd stop - Gran Ca Quadri

I stand before another amazing piece of history, Gran Ca Quadri.
Inaugurated shortly after Ca Florian, in 1775, it was founded by
the Venetian merchant, Giorgio Quadri. It is a caf that holds a slew
of memories, ranging from the period of the Republic of the Serenissima to the birth of the modern age. The Ca Quadri has had
clients of the caliber of Stendhal, Alexandre Dumas, Marcel Proust,
and also celebrities and contemporary artists, such as Woody Allen.

4th stop Harrys Bar
A place known by all worldwide, founded in 1931 by Giuseppe

Cipriani. Besides being famous for its Bellini, perhaps Venices
most typical cocktail, Harrys Bar is also a piece of the citys history.
Truman Capote, Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway, and Peggy
Guggenheim are just a few big names who have stepped through
its doors and sat at its tables.
5th stop - Ca del Doge
The artisanal Venetian roasting company, Ca del Doge, was

founded in 1952 and is located just a stones throw from the Rialto
Bridge. It distinguishes itself for its prized coee selections, while
its sta is very helpful in explaining the characteristics of various
coees from around the world. A tip to remember: drink coee
without sugar, to enhance its original aroma.

6th stop - Ca Lavena
Located in Piazza San Marco, it is one of the most renowned coee

shops in Venice. Founded in 1750, it still preserves in excellent condition the furnishings and ne details of that century. Throughout its
history, Ca Lavena has been popular with artists and musicians,
including Richard Wagner, who had dened it the best coee shop
in Venice.

Il teatro venne progettato

nel 1790 da Gian Antonio
Selva per una societ di
palchettisti dellaristocrazia
di Venezia; il teatro
veneziano fu costruito
celermente nonostante le
numerose polemiche sulla
sua collocazione e sulla sua
struttura razionalista e neoclassica. Il 29 gennaio 1996
fu distrutto per la seconda
volta (dopo il 1836) da un
incendio doloso. Il teatro
stato riedificato - nello stile
del precedente - in circa
otto anni. Il 14 dicembre
2003 stato inaugurato
con un concerto diretto da
Riccardo Muti.
Designed in 1790 by
Gian Antonio Selva for an
association of Venetian, aristocratic ticket holders. The
Venetian theatre was built
very quickly even though
there was some controversy over the location
and over the rational neoclassic design. On the 29
January 1996 the theatre
was once again destroyed
(after 1836) by a raging fire.
The theatre, rebuilt in about
eight years, is a recreation
of the 19th century style.
On 14 December 2003
it was reopened with an
inaugural concert directed
by Riccardo Muti.

The Basilica di Santa Maria

Gloriosa dei Frari, usually
just called the Frari, is one
of the main churches in Venice and has the status of
a minor basilica. It stands
on the Campo dei Frari at
the heart of the San Polo
district. The church is dedicated to the Assumption of
Mary. The interior contains
a number of works of art
including two masterpieces by Tiziano. A double
choir is formed by the
two organs, typical of the
musical style in 16th and
17th century Venice.

La Scuola Grande di San

Rocco, una confraternita formata da cittadini
benestanti veneziani, venne
fondata nel 1478. La Scuola
sorge al fianco della chiesa
di San Rocco in sestiere S.
Polo, santo a cui si vot la
citt di Venezia per chiedere
la grazia durante la prima
delle tre grandi epidemie di
peste, quella del XV secolo.
Nel 1564 venne chiesto a
Tintoretto di decorare la
Scuola. Tutte le opere sono
sue o dei suoi allievi. Di
particolare pregio la Sala
dellAlbergo. Il meraviglioso
ciclo di teleri realizzato
nelle tre Sale rappresenta
per Venezia quello che per
Roma la Cappella Sistina.

1963 the ground floor and
the gardens were restored
by Carlo Scarpa. The interior houses the most popular library of students of Venice and a museum (second
floor) with furniture and
paintings from eighteenth
century Venice as well as
collections of porcelain,
musical instruments, coins,
tapestries, models and
drawings. The venue also
frequently hosts exhibitions,
book presentations and art
workshops for children. A
bookshop and a caf can
also be found inside.

conte Giovanni nel 1868.
Nel 1963 il piano terra e il
giardino sono stati restaurati
da Carlo Scarpa. All'interno
ospitata la biblioteca pi
frequentata degli studenti
a Venezia e un museo (al
secondo piano) con arredi e
dipinti del Settecento veneziano, raccolte di porcellane,
strumenti musicali, monete,
arazzi, modellini e disegni.
Ospita spesso mostre
collettive, presentazioni
di libri e laboratori d'arte
per bambini. All'interno
anche un bookshop e una
caffetteria.

The Scuola Grande di San

Rocco was founded by a
confraternity of well-to-do
Venetian citizens in 1478.
The School was built onto
the side of San Rocco Church
in the S. Polo district. During
the first of the three plagues
in the 15th century the
people of Venice turned to
Saint Rocco for his blessing.
Tintoretto was commissioned to decorate the School
in 1564. All works of art have
been carried out by either
Tintoretto or his students.
The Sala dellAlbergo is
of particular interest. The
marvellous cycle carried out
in the three halls is to Venice
what the Sistine Chapel is
to Rome.

LA FESTA DELLA
SALUTE
La Festa della Salute sicuramente quella dall'impatto

meno "turistico", e che evoca un sincero sentimento
religioso popolare. Anche
questa festivit, come quella del Redentore, ricorda
un'altra terribile pestilenza,
quella del biennio 1630-31.
Pi di mezzo secolo dopo
la terribile pestilenza del
1575-77, il morbo si abbatte
nuovamente su Venezia. Il
doge fa voto di erigere una
chiesa intitolata alla Salute,
chiedendo l'intercessione
della Vergine Maria per
porre fine alla pestilenza.
A tutt'oggi, il 21 novembre,
migliaia di veneziani
percorrono il ponte votivo
su barche e vanno in
pellegrinaggio alla Chiesa
della Salute a rendere
omaggio alla Madonna
e ad accendere un cero
perpetuando il secolare
vincolo di gratitudine che
lega la citt alla Vergine
Maria. Il 21 novembre a
Venezia un giorno festivo.
Il piatto di questa giornata
la castradina, un antico
cibo a base di cosciotto di
montone salato, affumicato
e poi stagionato, usato per
fare una gustosa zuppa con
l'aggiunta di foglie di verza,
cipolle e vino, che tradizionalmente viene gustata
alla vigilia della festa della
Madonna della Salute.

The Festa della Salute

- Feast of Our Lady of
Health - is probably the
least touristy of feasts
and is one that evokes a
true popular religious
sentiment. This feast,
as does the Festa del
Redentore - Feast of the
Most Holy Redeemer - is a
reminder of another bout
of pestilence that occurred
from 1630-1631. More than
half a century after the
terrible plague of 15751577, this plague gripped
Venice, once more. The
Doge took a vow to build a
church called alla Salute
of Health - requesting
for the intercession of
the Virgin Mary to end
the plague. To date, on
November 21st, thousands
of Venetians cross the
votive bridge, on boats,
and take a pilgrimage to
the Chiesa della Salute
to pay homage to the
Madonna and to light a
candle, continuing the ageold bond of gratitude that
ties the city to the Virgin
Mary. November 21st is a
public holiday in Venice.
The dish of the day is the
castradina, an ancient
food of leg of mutton that
is salted, smoked, and
then cured, used to make
a delicious soup with the
addition of cabbage leaves,
onions, and wine, which is
traditionally enjoyed on the
eve the Feast of Our Lady
of Health.

well-known American
performance company that
has, for many seasons,
selected Mestre as its
starting venue for its most
memorable and successful
international tours. After
W Momix forever, Moses
Pendleton presents Opus
Cactus. This jewel of the
stage, already celebrated
worldwide in 2001, has
returned after fifteen
years from its debut, with
a new look and with an
unprecedented tribute to
Shakespeare.
The storyline tells of the
Arizona desert, known in
the collective imagination
as a backdrop for countless
films and TV commercials.
The ten dancer-gymnasts
defy the laws of gravity,
spinning around a metal
structure that, at first,
seems to come apart and
then recompose itself,
perform an initiation ritual
using fire, and much more,
always at the limits of what
is physically possible. The
musical accompaniment,
towards which Momix is
traditionally very attentive,
ranges from Bach to Brian
Eno, from the inevitable
Dead can Dance to
American Indian tribal
dance pieces, and other
original songs from desert
areas, such as those of the
Australian Aborigines.

Padua will be welcoming
two of the most important
ballet dancers known
worldwide: Alexander
Volchkov and Nina
Kaptsova of the Bolshoi
Ballet. The Nutcracker is
one of the masterpieces of
nineteenth-century ballet.
A ballet with a Christmas
feel, par excellence, The
Nutcracker was the last
work created by Marius Petipa, the choreographer of
the Russian Imperial Theatres at the end of the nineteenth century. The most
memorable adaptation
and interpretation of this
ballet was Rudolf Nureyevs
in 1969 at the Teatro alla
Scala, where he favored a
psychoanalytic reading of
the work, playing a triple
role: Drosselmeyer, the
Nutcracker, and the Prince.
An innovation that was
introduced by Tchaikovsky
in its original execution was
the presence of the celesta,
an instrument discovered
by the composer in Paris,
which was used in several
fairytale passages during
the ballet.

Giunto alla 21esima edizione la Festa del radicchio

citt di Mirano e dei Sapori
della Tradizione Veneta,
una manifestazione che
trae origine dallinserimento del territorio del Comune
di Mirano nella zona protetta del Radicchio rosso di
Treviso e del variegato di
Castelfranco. Lesposizione
allestita, dalle ore 10, in
Piazza Martiri, dove il radicchio, portato dai produttori
del comprensorio, viene
esposto sotto le bancarelle
in legno, sistemate tutte
attorno allovale della piazza. Oltre al radicchio, ci
sono anche i sapori della
tradizione veneta, quindi,
molti altri stand lungo le vie
che confluiscono nel centro
storico, dove si possono
acquistare selezionati prodotti enogastronomici ed
artigianali del territorio.
Alle ore 10,30, da Via Barche parte la visita guidatagratuita al ciclo produttivo

and the Flavors of Venetian
Tradition Festival is an
event that originated
from when the territory
of the Municipality of
Mirano became part of the
protected area of the Red
Radicchio of Treviso and of
the variegated Castelfranco
Radicchio. The exhibition begins at 10am in
Piazza Martiri where the
radicchio, brought by the
producers of the area, is
set out under the wooden
stands, arranged all around
the oval of the Piazza. The
Flavors of Venetian Tradition also accompany the
radicchio, with many other
stands along the streets,
leading into the old town,

food, wine, and artisanal
products from the territory.

Throughout this territory, which represents one of the enological arterial roads of Italy, weve chosen the main route, the Strada del Prosecco - or Prosecco Road
as far as possible wanting to trace the original route inaugurated in 1966.
Il nostro viaggio inizia (e terminer) dalla Citt di

Conegliano, che offre l'opportunit di una passeggiata
tra i portici di Contrada Grande, ad ammirare le facciate
di palazzi nobiliari, la straordinaria bellezza degli affreschi sulla facciata del
Duomo e sullo sfondo il Castello. proprio ai piedi
di quest'ultimo, presso lo storico Istituto Enologico
Cerletti, che imbocchiamo la Strada del Vino. Prima
per consigliata una visita all'ottocentesca ed affrescata Bottega del Vino della Scuola Enologica, previa
prenotazione.
Da qui ci si dirige verso Collabrigo che regala suggestivi
panorami sui colli circostanti, punteggiati di vigneti e
piccole macchie boscate. Interessante
anche la settecentesca Villa Ghin Montalban. Si prosegue poi verso Rua di San
Pietro di Feletto e il suo seicentesco
Eremo Camaldolese (sede del Municipio),
per arrivare a San Pietro di Feletto ove sorge
la splendida Pieve del XII sec. di squisite ed
eleganti linee romaniche, assolutamente da
non perdere.
Il successivo tratto di strada si dipana sino a Refrontolo tra un susseguirsi di scorci suggestivi sui colli del
Felettano, mentre una breve deviazione pu condurre
all'incantevole Molinetto della Croda, incastrato nella
roccia.
Arrivati a Solighetto, scopriamo la settecentesca Villa
Brandolini, sede del Consorzio Tutela del Vino Prosecco
Conegliano Valdobbiadene Docg e luogo
che ospita diversi eventi culturali. Poco
lontano a Soligo sorge la chiesetta di
Santa Maria Nova risalente, come i
suoi affreschi, al XIV secolo. Una breve
escursione conduce al tempietto di San
Gallo sull'omonimo colle da cui si pu godere
di una straordinaria vista panoramica sulla
sottostante valle del Piave.

Our journey begins - and will end - from the

City of Conegliano, which offers us the chance for a
walk through the porticoes of Contrada Grande, admiring the facades of aristocratic palaces, along with the
extraordinary beauty of the frescoes on the facade of the
Duomo, with the Castle as a backdrop. It is right at the
foot of the latter, at the historic Cerletti Wine Institute,
that we take the Strada del Vino the Wine Road, but
we first recommend a visit to the frescoed nineteenth
century Bottega del Vino of the Wine School in Conegliano, by reservation only.
From here, we head towards Collabrigo, which offers
striking views of the surrounding hills, dotted with
vineyards and small wooded patches. Also
interesting is the eighteenth-century Villa Ghin
Montalban. We continue on to Rua San Pietro
di Feletto and its seventeenth-century Eremo
Camaldolese - former hermitage, now seat of
the town hall - to reach San Pietro di Feletto
where the beautiful twelfth-century Parish
Church stands, with its exquisite and elegant
Romanesque lines. Definitely a must-see.
The next stretch of road unwinds towards Refrontolo,
through a succession of charming views across the hills
of Feletto, while a short detour takes us to the enchanting Molinetto Croda, wedged into the rock.
Once in Solighetto, we find the eighteenth-century
Villa Brandolini, home to the Consorzio Tutela del Vino
Prosecco Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG - Prosecco
DOCG Wine Consortium - and host to various cultural
events. Not far from here, in Soligo, stands the
quaint church of Santa Maria Nova. Both the
church and its frescoes date back to the fourteenth century, A short walk leads to the shrine of
San Gallo - St. Gallen - erected on the hill from
which its name derives - and from where we can
enjoy a stunning panoramic view
across the Valle del Piave.
Once past Farra di Soligo, we arrive at Col San
Martino, with its medieval Credazzo Towers,

proof that the Lombards had settled here, and the

authentic architectural and artistic gem that is the
Church of San Vigilio, nestled in the hills and that can be
reached within a few minutes by foot.
On the way to Colbertaldo, we can enjoy a largely,
still intact, landscape, patterned with little
rounded hills, poetically defined snails, often
dotted with old casre - sheds - where farmers
today still store hay and tools.
Our journey continues northward, through
endless vineyards, to then reach what is the cru
par excellence of the Prosecco Superiore DOCG
region, the area of Cartizze, where the fine sparkling
wine with the same name is produced.
From below, heading to Follo, and then back up
towards Santo Stefano, we can admire several of the
most beautiful panoramas of the hills of the Prosecco
Superiore DOCG, where uninterrupted vineyards leave
room - but only on the hilltops - to the renowned
chestnut forests. Past Santo Stefano and San Pietro di
Barbozza - home to the Valdobbiadene Confraternity
we finally reach Valdobbiadene, where our
outbound trip ends, but not without taking
a look at the main square surrounded by
neoclassical buildings and, not far beyond,
the delightful seventeenth-century Church of
San Gregorio - St. Gregory - which is used for
musical and choral events, thanks
to its excellent acoustics.
From Valdobbiadene we continue our trip, retracing
our steps in the direction of Guia: a route with several of
the most striking and impressive belvederes overlooking
the underlying hills and the
pattern of uninterrupted vineyards.
We move on, taking provincial road SP123, in the direction of Campea, surrounded by a still well-preserved
rural landscape. Once across the Soligo river, and past
provincial road SP4, at Pedeguarda, we rapidly climb up
towards Farr, in a setting that is to some extent fairly
new, where the vineyards, often steep and
jagged - where the view of
Rolle is a must-see from here - open
up onto, or act as a counterpart, to
dense woods.
Having left Arfanta behind us, we head towards
Tarzo and Corbanese first, and then Cozzuolo,
Carpesica, and Ogliano along a stretch of road
characterized by interesting agrarian hydraulic works,
such as embankments, with ancient villages and their
bell towers outlined against the horizon. With a final
stretch through the center of Conegliano, our trip ends
back at the Cerletti Institute.

gioiello architettonico ed artistico della Chiesetta di San
Vigilio, adagiata sulle colline e raggiungibile con una
passeggiata di pochi minuti.
Sino a Colbertaldo si pu godere di un
paesaggio in buona parte ancora integro
e disegnato da piccoli coni collinari,
poeticamente definiti chiocciole, spesso
punteggiati delle antiche 'Casre' dove i
contadini ricoverano ancora oggi il fieno e gli
attrezzi.
Il nostro viaggio prosegue verso Nord,
immergendosi tra infiniti vigneti per raggiungere
quello che il cru per eccellenza dell'area Docg del
Prosecco Superiore, ovvero l'area del Cartizze da cui
si ricava l'omonimo pregiato spumante.
Dal basso, dirigendosi verso il Follo e risalendo poi verso Santo Stefano, si possono ammirare alcuni tra i pi
bei panorami delle colline del Prosecco Superiore Docg,
i cui vigneti ininterrotti lasciano spazio solo sulle sommit dei rilievi collinari ai rinomati boschi di castagno.
Oltrepassati Santo Stefano e San Pietro
di Barbozza (sede della Confraternita di
Valdobbiadene), si arriva infine a
Valdobbiadene, dove si conclude il
nostro viaggio di andata non senza un'occhiata alla piazza principale circondata di
edifici di stile neoclassico, e poco lontano alla
deliziosa Chiesetta di San Gregorio del '600,
utilizzata, grazie alla sua ottima acustica, per
eventi musicali e corali.
Da Valdobbiadene riprendiamo il cammino, ritornando
sui nostri passi in direzione di Guia; un tragitto che
presenta alcuni tra i pi suggestivi ed imponenti belvedere sulle colline sottostanti e sulla loro trama di vigneti
ininterrotti.
Ci avviamo, lungo la S.P. 123 in direzione di Campea
immersi in un paesaggio rurale ancora ben conservato.
Superato il fiume Soligo e oltrepassata la SP4,
a
Pedeguarda si sale rapidamente in quota
verso Farr in un ambiente per molti tratti
nuovo perch i vigneti, spesso ripidi e
scoscesi - da non perdere in questo senso
la veduta di Rolle - si aprono o fanno da
contraltare a fitti boschi.
Lasciata alle spalle Arfanta, ci si dirige verso
Tarzo e Corbanese prima, e poi Cozzuolo,
Carpesica, Ogliano lungo un tratto di strada
caratterizzato da interessanti opere idraulico agrarie come i ciglioni, e dal profilarsi sull'orizzonte
degli antichi paesi e dei loro campanili. Il viaggio si avvia
alla sua conclusione attraverso il centro di Conegliano e
l'arrivo all'Istituto Cerletti.

Lattuale Museo Civico occupa il Palazzo del Vescovado

e ledificio della Loggia della Ragione; questultimo
stato costruito nel corso del XV secolo per ospitare le
rappresentanze minori veneziane e il Podest nella sua
veste di amministratore della giustizia. La Loggia venne
affrescata attorno alla met del XVI secolo.
Il primo nucleo delle collezioni museali si forma agli
inizi dellOttocento grazie alle donazioni di Domenico
Manera e Giovan Battista Sartori Canova. Ma con i
lasciti degli eredi di Andrea Manera (1880) e di Pacifico Scomazzetto (1888) che viene istituito ufficialmente
il Museo. Questo primo nucleo di manufatti esposto
presso la Sala della Ragione dove ha sede in quel periodo anche il Municipio. Da allora le donazioni di privati
si intensificano, incrementando considerevolmente il

later frescoed around the mid-sixteenth century.
The first nucleus of the museum collections was created
in the early nineteenth century, thanks to donations from
Domenico Manera and Giovan Battista Sartori Canova.
However, it was with the legacies of the heirs of Andrea
Manera (1880) and of Pacifico Scomazzetto (1888) that
the Museum was officially established. This first nucleus
of artifacts was exhibited in the Sala della Ragione where,
during that period, the Town Hall held its seat. Since then,
private donations intensified, considerably increasing the

In particular, the Archaeological Section includes pieces

dating from the prehistoric age, all the way to the MedievalRenaissance period, found both in the center of Asolo, as
well as in the surrounding areas. Halls 2 and 3 are reserved
for Prehistory and Protohistory. Hall 4 is dedicated to various Roman remains, and Hall 5 to the Roman aqueduct of
Asolo and the ancient Via Aurelia, which connected Padua
and Asolo. Halls 6 and 7 house artifacts from Roman urban
necropolises. In Hall 8, we can admire medieval artifacts
found in the excavations conducted between 1985 and
1992 in the Fortress.

Three are the great protagonists of the

museum: the famous Altarpiece, the Frieze,
and the House, also known as di Giorgione,
which is home to the permanent exhibition.
Around this extraordinary legacy of the city of

Castelfranco, the museum itinerary materializes the atmosphere that was once alive here
between the end of the fifteenth century and the
early sixteenth century, adding value to a context that
is truly unique worldwide.
Therefore, little by little, one enters the works of Giorgione and his extraordinary, yet, not very well-known
period. From the Altarpiece emerges ancient armor

Grazie allottimo sito della Provincia di Verona (www.tourism.verona.it )abbiamo per visitato tutti i monumenti principali della citt.
Verona vanta origini antichissime. Colonia romana gi dal I
secolo a.C., divenne municipium romano nel 49 a.C. Nel XII
secolo fu fondato il libero Comune e il volto della citt cominci
a mutare arricchendosi di nuove costruzioni civili e religiose.
Nella seconda met del XIII secolo si afferm la signoria degli
Scaligeri che ne guid le sorti fino al 1387. Dopo una breve soggezione ai Visconti e ai Carraresi, nel 1405 Verona si consegn
spontaneamente alla Repubblica di Venezia, che ne conserv
il dominio fino a quando, nel 1796 la citt fu occupata dalle
truppe napoleoniche.
Nel 1801 la frontiera della Repubblica Cisalpina fu portata allAdige e Verona si ritrov divisa in due settori: la riva destra
francese, quella sinistra austriaca. Nel 1805 lintera citt ritorn

sotto il dominio napoleonico fino al 1814, anno in cui fu definitivamente annessa allimpero asburgico.
Nella prima met del XIX secolo rivest un importante ruolo
amministrativo e militare ed entr a far parte del Regno dItalia
nel 1866.
LArena (I sec.d.C) il simbolo della citt e da essa inizia il
viaggio alla scoperta di Verona. Situata nella bellissima Piazza
Bra, rievoca atmosfere antiche e incanta con i suoi spettacoli lirici. Lungo il fianco occidentale della piazza possibile
ammirare le mura comunali e limponente Palazzo della
Gran Guardia. A sud si trova il neoclassico Palazzo Barbieri
mentre sul lato settentrionale ospitato il rinomato Liston,
la passeggiata veronese per eccellenza. Alla fine del Liston si
imbocca Via Mazzini, la pi frequentata ed elegante via della
citt, che sfocia in Via Cappello. Qui, al n.23, si possono visitare
la Casa di Giulietta e il celebre balcone.
It is not simple to see all the beauty of Verona in just one day. However, thanks to the excellent website created by the Province of Verona - www.tourism.verona.it - we were able to visit all the most important monuments in the city.
The origins of Verona are very ancient. A Roman colony since the first century B.C., it became a Roman municipium in
49 B.C. In the twelfth century, it established itself as an autonomous municipality, and the aspect of the city began to
change, embellished by new municipal and religious buildings.
In the second half of the thirteenth century, the noble family of the Scaligeri claimed lordship over the city and led it
through its destiny until 1387. After a brief subjugation under the Visconti and the Carraresi families, in 1405, Verona
spontaneously surrendered itself to the Republic of Venice, which ruled over it until the city became occupied by
Napoleons troops in 1796.
In 1801, the border of the Cisalpine Republic was moved to the Adige river, and Verona found itself divided in two: the
French right bank and the Austrian left. In 1805, the entire city again fell under Napoleons rule until 1814, when it was
finally annexed to the Hapsburg Empire.
In the first half of the nineteenth century, Verona detained an important administrative and military role and became
part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

Il gotico a Vicenza conobbe uno sviluppo importantissimo, contrassegnando prima di tutto l'ampliamento della
citt stessa, con l'aggiunta di mura fortificate all'epoca
della dominazione dei Carraresi (1266-1311) e, successivamente, degli Scaligeri (1311-1387) seguiti, a partire dal
1404, dalla Serensissima Repubblica. Entro quella rinnovata dimensione urbana, sorsero autentici capolavori di
architettura gotica, edifici sia civili che religiosi. Grazie
al sito www.vicenzae.org abbiamo percorso un itinerario
vicentino dedicato agli stupendi esempi di questa grande
fase dellarchitettura europea.
Nel cuore del centro storico, nell'antica zona del Foro
romano e sulle fondamenta del Palazzo Comunale, in
pieno quattrocento, fu edificato in fogge gotiche il Palazzo della Ragione, su progetto di Domenico da Venezia,
riecheggiando il veneziano Palazzo Ducale.
In tempi precedenti, ma sempre riconducibili all'affermazione del Gotico in citt, i Frati Domenicani, Francescani ed Eremitani fecero innalzare, sullo scorcio
del Duecento, splendide costruzioni: rispettivamente
Il Tempio di S. Corona ad est, eccezionale interpretazione del Gotico cistercense; la Chiesa di S. Lorenzo, a
nord, armoniosa sintesi di romanico e gotico; la Chiesa
di S. Michele; a sud, demolita nel 1812. Nella valle sotto
i Berici, gli Agostiniani nel 1323 eressero la Badia di S.
Agostino, con le sovvenzioni degli Scaligeri e di nobili
vicentini e veronesi. Appena fuori dalle mura sorse il
complesso tardo-gotico di Monte Berico (1428-1467),
che tutt'ora affianca il celebre Santuario della Madonna di epoca barocca.

Gothic architecture in Vicenza underwent a very important development, first of all, marking the expansion of
the city itself, with the addition of fortified walls under the
domination of the Carraresi (1266-1311) and, subsequently, the Scaligeri (1311-1387), then followed by the
Republic of the Serensissima starting in 1404. Within
that renewed urban dimension, authentic masterpieces
of Gothic architecture, both municipal and religious
buildings, were created. Thanks to the www.vicenzae.org
website, we enjoyed a trip through Vicenza dedicated to
the wonderful examples of this great European architectural phase.
The fifteenth century - in the heart of the historical
center, in the ancient area where the Roman Forum
stood, and on the foundations of the Town Hall - was
witness to the construction of the Palazzo della Ragione, designed in a Gothic fashion by Domenico da Venezia, echoing the likes of the Ducal Palace of Venice.

All'interno delle suddette Chiese troviamo preziose testimonianze di pittura, scultura e oreficeria gotica.
In Santa Corona, fondata dal Beato Bartolomeo da Breganze
nel 1260, presente l'Arca di Marco Thiene, con l'affresco
di Michelino da Besozzo (operante tra il 1388 e il 1450)
con Madonna con il Bambino, Santi e Offerente, il dipinto
Madonna delle Stelle, realizzato, nella parte centrale, da
Giovanni da Bologna nella seconda met del trecento; e
ancora il famoso reliquiario della Sacra Spina, contesto di
pietre preziose che conserva frammenti della Croce e della
Corona di Spine, donati da Re di Francia Luigi IX al Beato
Bartolomeo da Breganze, Vescovo di Vicenza tra il 1265 e
il 1270.
L'interessante connubio tra pittura e scultura alla base
di altre ideazione gotiche: della Pala in Pietra di Vicenza,
di Antonino da Venezia, raffigurante la Madonna con il
Bambino tra i Santi Pietro e Paolo, in S. Lorenzo; dello stesso
artista un'altra Pala in pietra dipinta e dorata custodita
nella Cattedrale, grande edificio del XV secolo, ricostruito
in seguito ai bombardamenti degli anni 1944-1945.
Un ulteriore opera dello stesso Da Venezia, proveniente
dalla Chiesa di S. Pietro, la ritroviamo esposta assieme
ad altri esiti del periodo, presso il Museo Civico di Palazzo
Chiericati.
Nella Badia di S. Agostino, sono conservati un Polittico di
Battista da Vicenza, dalla corsiva narrazione di stampo miniaturistico; un Crocefisso ligneo di Antonino Da Venezia;
un prezioso ciclo di affreschi, nel Presbiterio, con Storie
della Vergine e degli Evangelisti.
Altra tappa costituita dalla Chiesa di S. Maria delle Grazie,
in cui si pu ammirare un interessante Madonna con il
Bambino, scultura di anonimo attivo a Venezia negli anni
trenta del XV secolo.
La medesima eleganza d limpronta a numerosi palazzi
gotici eretti a Vicenza, specie durante il XV secolo, a
celebrazione del dominio della Serenissima, che port ad
In earlier times, but always related to the use of

Gothic architecture in this city, Dominican Friars
- Franciscans and Augustinians - had splendid buildings erected towards the end of the thirteenth century: respectively, the Temple of S. Corona to the east, an
outstanding interpretation of Cistercian Gothic - the
Church of S. Lorenzo - St. Lawrence - to the north, an
harmonious synthesis of Romanesque and Gothic,
and the Church of S. Michele - St. Michael, to the south,
demolished in 1812. In the valley below the Berici, the
Augustinians erected the Abbey of St. Augustine in
1323, with subsidies from the Scaligeri family, as well
as from nobles of Vicenza and Verona. Just outside
the walls rose the Late-Gothic complex of Monte Berico
(1428-1467), which still stands adjacent to the famous
Shrine of Our Lady from the Baroque period.
Within the above mentioned churches we find important
proof of Gothic paintings, sculptures, and goldsmithing.
In Santa Corona, founded by Blessed Bishop Bartolomeo da Breganze in 1260, we can admire the Arc
of Marco Thiene, with the fresco by Michelino da
Besozzo (who painted between 1388 and 1450) depicting the Madonna with Child and Saints, the painting
of the Madonna of the Stars created, in its central
portion, by Giovanni da Bologna during the second
half of the fourteenth century, and also the famous
Reliquary of the Holy Thorn, embedded with precious
stones, which preserves fragments of the Cross and
of the Crown of Thorns, donated by King Louis IX of
France to Beato Bartolomeo da Breganze, Bishop of
Vicenza between 1265 and 1270.
An interesting combination of paintings and sculptures
lies as a foundation to other Gothic creations, including: The Stone Altarpiece of Vicenza by Antonino da
Venezia, depicting the Madonna with Child between
Saints Peter and Paul, in St. Lorenzo, while another stone altarpiece painted and glided by the same artist is
housed in the Cathedral, an imposing fifteenth-century
construction, rebuilt after the bombings of 1944-45.
Another work by da Venezia, from the Church of S.
Pietro - St. Peter, is exhibited along with other pieces
of the same period in the Municipal Museum of Palazzo
Chiericati.
Instead, the Abbey of St. Agostino - St. Augustine still preserves a polyptych by Battista da Vicenza - a
miniaturist narrative depiction, as well as a wooden
crucifix by Antonino da Venezia, and a precious cycle
of frescoes in the presbytery depicting Stories of the
Virgin and the Evangelists.
We come to another stop during the tour at the Church of
Santa Maria delle Grazie, where we can admire an interesting Madonna with Child, an anonymous sculpture
created in Venice during the 1430s.

una netta ripresa economica oltre che a fecondi contatti

culturali. Eccezionali cornici in pietra e marmo scolpite
e decorate finestre e portali, fanno orgogliosa mostra di
raffinati repertori decorativi. Risulta agevole per il visitatore intraprendere la visita agli edifici gotici suddividendoli
in due distinti itinerari. L'uno resta nella zona sulla destra
rispetto all'asse viario principale, Corso Andrea Palladio,
voltando le spalle a Ponte degli Angeli. L'altro sulla sinistra.
Iniziando dalla prima opportunit il percorso potrebbe
partire dall'Oratorio dei Boccalotti, in Piazza S. Pietro,
proseguendo alla volta di Palazzo Rega sconfinando in
Via XX Settembre. Da l, dopo una sosta nel Tempio di S.
Corona, si procede verso Palazzo Dal Toso Franceschini
Da Schio, detto C d'Oro, impreziosito dalla splendida
ghiera finemente scolpita del portale. Proseguendo verso
Contr Giacomo Zanella, notiamo la fastosa presenza
di Palazzo Sesso Zen e da l ci dirigiamo in Contr Porti,
dove l'interpretazione del Gotico veneziano raggiunge gli
esiti pi ragguardevoli nei Palazzi Porto-Bertolini, PortoColleoni e Porto-Breganze. Risalendo Corso Palladio
risalter il prospetto di Palazzo Braschi-Brunello con i
medaglioni scolpiti con profili virili, e Palazzo Thiene.
L'itinerario pu essere concluso con la visita della Chiesa
di S. Lorenzo nell'omonima piazza.
Un secondo percorso potrebbe avere inizio da Piazza dei
Signori, con la visita della Torre Bissara e del Palazzo
della Ragione circondato dalle pi tarde Logge palladiane.
Una forte concentrazione di edifici gotici si registra in
zona Barche, a partire dall'Ospedale di S. Valentino, tra
vicolo Retrone e Contr delle Barche.

poco distante troviamo, vicino al panoramico Ponte S.
Michele, Palazzo Garzadori Braga. Procediamo alla ricerca
della leggendaria Casa Pigafetta, nell'omonima via, proseguendo verso Contr Paolo Lioy, per godere della vista
dell'elegante prospetto di Palazzo Garzadori Fattore. Nella
vicina Contr SS Apostoli notiamo l'interessante facciata di Palazzo Sangiovanni e di Palazzo Squarzi Serini, per
concludere l'amena passeggiata con Palazzo Arnaldi Segala in Contr Pasini.

Republic, which led to sharp economic recovery, as
well as fruitful cultural contacts. Exceptional cornices
in stone and carved marble, along with decorated windows and portals, proudly exhibited refined decorative
repertoires. Visitors will find it easy to tour the Gothic
buildings, dividing them into two distinct itineraries. One
is in the area to the right of the main street, Corso Andrea
Palladio, with your back to the Ponte degli Angeli - Bridge
of Angels. The other is to the left.

Starting with the first itinerary, the tour could begin

from the Oratory of the Boccalotti, in Piazza S. Pietro
- St. Peters Square - continuing on in the direction of
Palazzo Rega, encroaching onto Via XX Settembre.
From there, after a stop at the Temple of St. Corona,
we proceed towards Palazzo Dal Toso Franceschini
da Schio, also known as Ca dOro, embellished by
splendid fine carvings around its portal. Continuing
on towards Contr Giacomo Zanella, we see the
magnificent presence of Palazzo Sesso Zen and, from
there, we head towards Contr Porti, where the interpretation of Venetian Gothic reaches its most notable
results in the Palazzi of Porto-Bertolini, Porto-Colleoni,
and Porto-Breganze. Returning back onto Corso Palladio, the prospect of Palazzo Braschi-Brunello stands
out before us, with virile profiles carved on medallions,
and then Palazzo Thiene. The itinerary can end with a
visit to the Church of S. Lorenzo, located in the square
with the same-name.
A second itinerary could begin from Piazza dei Signori,
with a visit to the Bissara Tower and the Palazzo della
Ragione surrounded by late Palladian loggias. A
strong concentration of gothic buildings can be found
in the Barche area, starting from the Hospital of S.
Valentino, between Vicolo Retrone and Contr delle
Barche.
We can then visit Casa Scroffa Polazzo in Contr Piancoli and, not far from here, we find Palazzo Garzadori Braga, near the scenic S. Michele Bridge. We then
continue on, in search of the legendary Casa Pigafetta,
on the street with the same name, heading towards
Contr Paolo Lioy, to enjoy the view of the elegant Palazzo Garzadori Fattore. In the neighboring Contr SS
Apostoli, we can admire the interesting facade of Palazzo Sangiovanni and Palazzo Squarzi Serini, and then
conclude our pleasant tour with Palazzo Arnaldi Segala
in Contr Pasini.
