Il termine nutraceutica, sintesi delle due
parole nutrizione e farmaceutica,
stato coniato nel 1989 da Stephen De
Felice, nutrizionista e biochimico
americano, membro della Foundation for
Innovation in Medicine (New Jersey, USA),
che con questa definizione volle indicare
la disciplina che studia i componenti
alimentari che attraverso particolari
azioni-interazioni fisiologiche svolgono un
ruolo positivo sulla salute dellorganismo
contribuendo alla prevenzione di
patologie croniche quali malattie cardio-
vascolari, cancro, osteoporosi, artrite,
diabete tipo II, patologie neuro-
degenerative.

Con il termine nutraceutico
vengono pertanto identificati
specifici componenti di
alimenti di origine vegetale o
animale, che, per le loro
propriet funzionali, possono
essere impiegati da soli o in
miscela nella produzione degli
integratori alimentari.
La maggiore conoscenza dei consumatori circa la
possibilit di proteggere la salute con una dieta
adeguata e opportunamente integrata con
lassunzione di integratori alimentari ha portato al
diffondersi del ricorso ai prodotti nutraceutici, il cui
mercato, nonostante la crisi economica, registrata un
costante incremento. Nel corso del 2009, infatti,
mentre il comparto alimentare ha subito un calo nel
volume di vendite pari allo 0,4%, il fatturato degli
integratori alimentari cresciuto del 13,6% per
quanto riguarda il canale di vendita farmacia e del
10,8% per il canale mass market (dati Nielsen
Company, 2010).

La costante tendenza positiva mostrata dal mercato
degli integratori alimentari nel corso degli ultimi
decenni, ha indotto lindustria farmaceutica,
nellambito di strategie di diversificazione della
produzione, ad inserirsi nel settore della nutraceutica,
un tempo appannaggio della sola industria
alimentare.

Sia lindustria farmaceutica che quella alimentare
presentano pertanto la necessit di avvalersi di figure
professionali, che, gi ben qualificate, acquisiscano
competenze specifiche nel campo della nutraceutica.

The increased awareness among consumers about the
possibility of reducing degenerative diseases
(cardiovascular diseases, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis,
diabetes type II) with diet and food supplements has
led to the increase of the consumption of
nutraceuticals, whose market has been substantially
increased, despite the economic crisis. In 2009, in fact,
while the food sector has seen a decrease in sales
volume by 0.4%, sales of food supplements has grown
by 13.6% in terms of sales channel pharmacy and 10,
8% for the mass market channel (dati Nielsen
Company, 2011).

The continued positive trend shown by the market for
food supplements over the past decades has led the
pharmaceutical industry, as part of strategies to
diversify production, in entering the field of
Nutraceuticals, once the prerogative of the food
industry alone.

Therefore, both the pharmaceutical industry and the
food industry show the need to have professionals,
who are already well qualified and can acquire
specific skills in the field of Nutraceutical products.
