Today we are going to learn more about the verb mangiare - „to eat‟

Mangiare (-are (1st conjugation))

Come diresti (how would you say) I eat Io mangio

Come diresti You eat Tu mangi

Come diresti You (guys) eat Voi mangiate

Come diresti I eat an apple Mangio una mela oppure io mangio una mela

Come diresti I eat pasta Io mangio la pasta

Come diresti I have eat few hours ago Io ho mangiato poche ore fa

Come diresti I eat pizza in Naples Io mangio la pizza a Napoli

Come diresti I eat with my friends Io mangio con I miei amici

If you are talking about yourself, you can even imply Io - soggetto - since – “mangio la pasta” – is
enough to understand that you are talking about yourself.

Come diresti have you ever eat pizza? Hai mai mangiato la pizza?

Come diresti I eat pasta every day Mangio la pasta ogni giorno
Come diresti how many lentils do you eat? Quante lenticchie mangi?

Quando non usiamo mangiare - When we don’t use “mangiare”

In italiano non usiamo – mangiare la colazione - , oppure – mangiare il pranzo - , oppure – mangiare la
cena – infatti, sostituiamo mangiare con fare colazione, pranzare oppure cenare, rispettivamente se
ci riferiamo alla colazione, al pranzo oppure alla cena.

In italian we substitute mangiare with fare colazione (to have breakfast), pranzare (to have lunch) and
cenare (to have dinner) depending if we are referring to breakfast (colazione), lunch (pranzo) or dinner
(cena).

Ad esempio potresti dire


for example you could say

io pranzo con una mela – i have lunch with an apple


That it means that you‟re eating just an apple for lunch

Io ceno a casa – I have dinner at home

Io pranzo con i miei parenti – I have lunch with my relatives

Io pranzo in giardino – i have lunch in the garden

In italiano esistono diversi modi di dire con il verbo mangiare.


In italian there Are different common saying with the verb to eat.

Ad esempio
For example

Mangia o sarai mangiato – eat or you‟ll be eaten

Un altro esempio è
another example is

“Mangiare come un bue”

that it means that you are eating like an ox

oppure “Mangiare come un uccellino” –


That it means that you are eating like a little bird
In the first case you are eating too much
In the second case you are eating too few

Alla fine, è meglio sentirsi dire che stai mangiando come un uccellino e non sentirsi dire che stai
mangiando come un bue

At the end, is better to hear that you are eating as a little bird and not as an ox.

L‟ultimo modo di dire è


The last common saying is

Mangiare come un re
eat like a king

Ad esempio … oggi ho mangiato come un re
