The world’s development in legitimate widespread
wellbeing and its dream for unlimited growth in con-
Sumiption and production, which began in the Western
world at the time of the first industrial revolution and
steadily grew during the 1900s, was in spite of itself to
determine the events at the start of the new millennium,
The aprioristie trust in the technical-practical applica:
tion of the various scientific discoveries, without a single
thought for the repercussions of these actions, has been
replaced by realistic assessment of the increase in us-
ers-consumers and the contextual decline in available
resources. These two contrasting, irreconcilable trends
were initially discussed by professionals in the field of
research, and then, more or less cee and not with-
ut difficulty, by the public. There is onky one direction
we can and must follow, while the serine sure and
certain solutions are to be critically assessed.
Tirenanamons opinion now isthat we haveto put our
resources to careful use and exploit all those so-called
renewable sources of energy which, although expensive
initially, will in the long term ensure constant, cast-effec-
tive production. The systems used to attain these goals
through time and space could however create new prob

their use as bio-fucls ina bud to eveate a quantitative and
economical alternative to petrol; and tbe controversial
choice of genetically modified cultivations the side effects
of which are constantly being debated ard hypothesized,

The answers are legitimate, giving us the bope that we
will be able to resolve the ompending problems, although
they also pose other questions within the context. A calm
valuation of the costs-benefits ratio and an awareness
of the possibilities, some less sopbisticoted than others
but possibilities nonetheless, could help us address the
balance and offer grounds for a new sort of Manichean
positivism, but is Still not without substantial financial
tect.
Architecture is a key player in this general field as it
is, ontologically speaking, able to address the essential
