1 GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This part of IEC 61603 gives methods for measuring and specifying those charac-
teristics of wide band audio IR transmission systems not covered by part 1 of this
standard (see also 3.1). It allows systems which make different economic use of
the available bandwidth to be described in order that conclusions regarding in-
terference and compatibility can be drawn. Interface (matching) values and other
system characteristics are also covered. This part of IEC 61603 replaces chapter 1
of IEC 764, which covers only two carrier frequencies for analogue audio signals,
and which does not cover digital audio.
1.3 Definitions
For the purpose of this part of IEC 1603, the definitions given in part 1 of this
standard apply, together with the following.
2.1 Transmitter
A transmitter (link A-B in figure 1) has an audio signal input (analogue or digit-
al), and a special form of electrical output to feed a radiator.
(1) Editor’s Note: For the list of Publications, see Annex ZA.
2.4 Receiver
Besides the general characteristics given in part 1 of this standard, others may
need to be specified if a receiver (link C-D in figure 1) is combined with other
functions, such as earphones, to form an IR headphone.
To eliminate interference from other modulated IR sources, the receiver shall
provide enough selectivity with regard to the modulated subcarrier in addition to
selectivity in the IR band. Normally this selectivity shall correspond to the spec-
tral bandwidth of the modulated subcarrier signal, with some margin for instabil-
ities and possible extra features.
Definitions and methods of measurement for selectivity in relation to analogue
FM signals are given in the standards dealing with FM broadcast systems, such as
IEC 315-4 and ITU-R Recommendations 412, 641 and 704.
Note For digital audio transmission, the subject of receiver selectivity is under consideration.

2.7 Electromagnetic compatibility
General information is given in part 1 of this standard. Extensive information on
intersystem interference and interference from other sources of IR is given in
IEC 1147.
For electromagnetic compatibility, the requirements of CISPR 13 and CISPR 20
shall be fulfilled.

3.5 Partition of functions between elements of the system
3.5.1 General
As IR transmission equipment is used in rooms of very different sizes, it is availa-
ble in various combinations of the functional elements. Household applications
usually need only a few elements of small size which are easily installed, where-
as for an installation in a large auditorium, it is necessary to consider the func-
tional elements separately with regard to cost and to the effort needed to install
them.

6.2.2 Pulse modulation systems
For pulse modulation systems, because of the many different types available, no
fixed standard can be established at present. The following values are given as
examples.
Peak input voltage 0,5 V to 5 V
(unipolar or bipolar with respect to 0 V)
Pulse duration 10 ns to 1 ms
Input impedance 75 W
6.3 Polarity
The equipment shall conform to the requirements of part 1 of this standard.

6.8.1.2 Channel allocations: accommodation of existing designs
Existing products in the D-band do not make full use of this band in the most
economic way, which gives a maximum of 20 channels, but locate only eight car-
riers in this range. They use frequency offsets of 50 kHz with respect to carriers
in the D-band. However, with regard to the potential availability of low-cost com-
ponents, it was accepted to include these allocations in this standard, so that ex-
isting systems can continue to conform to this standard, at least until better use of
the band is implemented.
To distinguish this allocation from that of table 1, the channel identification code
includes the letter H (for high band) followed by a carrier number 1 to 8 in ac-
cordance with table 2. Table 2 also shows the reference to the allocation in ac-
cordance with table 1, indicating a shift of –50 kHz by a dash(-) after the channel
identification number.
In this allocation, the left channels for stereo signals are those with odd numbers
(H1, H3, H5, H7) and the right channels are those with even numbers (H2, H4,
H6, H8), every two adjacent channels forming one stereo pair.

tions and characteristics. Terminals and controls shall be marked with standard
IEC/ISO symbols, where they exist (see IEC 417 and ISO 7000). The polarity shall
be marked at terminals carrying d.c.
The equipment shall be clearly marked with all the data marked X in column A
of table 4, and that marked X in column B of table 3 of part 1 of this standard.
The classification scheme for systems and equipment is specified in part 1 of this
