An especially interesting case is n. 1356, where the solution of (a) is extremely attractive but (b) is
much less so, requiring extra pieces and also repeating many moves. The best idea surely is to
polish the setting of (a) to show it to best advantage (even though this might seem to go against
what I said earlier about single-solution helpmates!) ...but in fact this has already been done, by
Vaclav Kotesovec, who, happening upon the same idea, turned it into a beautiful H17.5 which
won 2nd Prize in StrateGems in 2007!
And so finally to the honoured problems.

Prize n. 1413 - Milomir Babic. A model for this type of problem. No repeated moves. The two
solutions, each working like clockwork, use the potentialities of the position (notably of the
inconspicuous g2) very differently. The impression is very clearcut, with no units added to play
a significant role in only one solution. 1.d6 cxd6 2.f7 d7 3.f3 gxf3 4.c7 fxe4 5.d6 d8+
6.e5 e7 1.b6 cxb6 2.c8 b7+ 3.d7 b8 4.e6 xg3 5.f5 g7 6.e6 g4
1st Hon. Ment. n. 1169 - Milomir Babic. My favourite of the one-liners, with the amusing feature
of 3 sacrifices of Black {s. It is surprising that this is sound when White promotes so early in the
solution, and the immobility of the promoted adds piquancy to the e2P's unexpected march to
replace the b5P. 1.a5 b6 2.a6 b7 3.c1 b8 4.d3 exd3 5.c4 dxc4 6.b5 cxb5
2nd Hon. Ment. n. 1290 - Henry Tanner. Another good example of 2-solutions format. There are
connecting strands: in both solutions d3 must be made available and Black's 4 moves constitute a
round-trip. But the appeal of the problem lies in the radically different means used to reach the
same end result. 1.d4 b6 2.xd5 d4 3.xd4 xd6+ 4.c3 d3 1.c1 a5 2.xd3 a1
3.e1 d1 4.c2 d3
3rd Hon. Ment. n. 1414 - Jean Carf. I found this one hard to place. The nicely interlocking line
effects are all fairly familiar (one thinks of problems by Fadil Abdurahmanovic and bernd
ellinghoven) but this specific mix of them is not wholly anticipated and deserves recognition.
1.h6 g5 2.d1 h4 3.d2 d6 4.e4 e5 5.e3 f4 6.e2+ g3 7.e1 g2
1st Comm. n. 1170 - Albert Grigorjan. A nice single-liner. What elevated it above others in my
mind was the subtlety of the need for 2 promotions to y: you would think that it must be possible
to get a promoted x to g8, but it turns out that it isn't! 1.c1 c5 2.g1 c3 3.f8 d4 4.g8
e5 5.e1+ f6 6.e8 d7
2nd Comm. n. 1045 - Gaspar J. Perrone & Leonardo G. Perrone. By no means unique among
Rundlauf problems, it is nonetheless very nice that that the White must selfpin twice in the
course of the solution. 1e4 2.b2 g2 3.b6 h2 4.a6 c2 5.b6 a4

3rd Comm. n. 1355 - Ion Murarasu. One of the problems that had many recurring moves; but the
achievement of 2 solutions of this length is commendable, and the large total number of moves in
the solutions does mean that there are also quite a few moves that do not recur! 1.d8 h2 2.b3

Necrologi (Obituary)
Florea Vecu
I have received from his son the sad announcement of the death of Florea Vecu. He died on
December 2, after a short struggle with cancer. Known Rumanian composer, Florea has published
many problems on BP. His son Marius has promised that all his works will be carefully classified
and offered to the chess lovers through magazines and, hopefully, a website soon.
Arturo Bussetta

lavori in coppia.

Unico difetto:
c~ ha minacce multiple.
Perfetto.
Sfortunatamente la proposta di
Placanico ha tre soluzioni:
1.Ce6! 1.Ce4! 1.Cb3!
Armeni e Crucioli hanno inviato una posizione identica; Crucioli ha anche inviato una seconda
posizione che per era insolubile. Diaz ancora una volta ha inviato una posizione perfetta;

Hans Peter Rehm, Hans Gruber.
