Mutua intelligibilit
Le tre lingue scandinave, cio il norvegese, lo svedese e il danese, sono
considerate come lingue differenti, ma sono mutuamente intelleggibili. I
parlanti di queste tre lingue possono comprendersi e comunicare tra loro. Si
pensa inoltre che il tedesco sia una sola lingua, ma non tutti i tipi di tedesco
sono comprensibili da parlanti di altri tipi. (p. 4). Gi svedesi comprendono
bene i norvegesi, ma di pi altri tipi di svedesi.
La mutua intellegibilit dipende anche dal grado di esposizione all'input
dell'altra lingua, all'educazione e dalla volont di comprensione.
Il criterio di mutua intellegibilit utile per decidere cosa o non lingua.
Le lingue scandinave hanno forme standardizzate, distinte e codificate, con
la loro ortografia, la loro grammatica, i loro libri e letterature in quanto
corrispondono a tre nazioni diverse, i parlanti parlano lingue diverse.
Con variety si intende un 'neutral term to apply to any particular kind of
language which we wish, for some purpose, to consider as a single entity.
Cumulative differences: "The further we get from our starting point, the larger
the differences will become. The effect of this may therefore be, if the
distance
involved is large enough, that (if we arrange villages along our route in
geographical
order) while speakers from village A understand people from village B very
well and
those from village F quite well, they may understand village M speech only
with considerable
difficulty, and that of village Z not at all. Villagers from M, on the other
hand, will probably understand village F speech quite well, and villagers from
A and
Z only with difficulty. In other words, dialects on the outer edges of the
geographical
area may not be mutually intelligible, but they will be linked by a chain of
mutual
intelligibility. At no point is there a complete break such that geographically
adjacent

dialects are not mutually intelligible, but the cumulative effect of the
linguistic differences
will be such that the greater the geographical separation, the greater the
difficulty
of comprehension.
Discretezza e continuit

Siamo soliti pensare alle variet linguistiche come ad entit discrete, ma il

fatto che esista un Continuum geografico dialettale annulla la legittimit di
etichettare le variet.
Il continuum dialettale non solo geografico, ma anche sociale ( il caso
della Giamaica: l'inglese come lingua di prestigio ha influenze sul creolo
giamaicano, che per ragioni socio-economiche viene considerato inferiore
all'inglese, nonostante la somiglianza con esso nelle forme linguistiche)
Autonomia ed eteronomia
Heteronomy is
simply the opposite of autonomy, and thus refers to dependence rather than
independence.
heteronomy and autonomy are the result of political and cultural rather than
purely linguistic factors, they are subject to change.
