IL COMUNE DI LA THUILE Con unestensione di 126 Kmq, si colloca a sud-ovest della Valle dAosta; confina con sette comuni valdostani (Courmayeur, Pr-Saint-Didier, Morgex, La Salle, Avise, Arvier, Valgrisenche) e quattro savoiardi (Sainte-Foy-en-Tarentaise, Montvalezan, Sez, Bourg-Saint-Maurice). La sua posizione geografica ha fatto s che si qualificasse come zona di transito, principalmente verso la Francia tramite la nota strada romana delle Gallie che conduce al Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo, gi passo Alpis Graia e, secondariamente, verso la valle centrale grazie al percorso alternativo del Colle San Carlo. Gli insediamenti di maggior estensione sono dislocati proprio lungo queste due vie principali: il Capoluogo, Faubourg, Entrves, la Petite e la Grande Golette, Pont Serrand, sulla strada del Piccolo San Bernardo; Bathieu, Moulin, Thovex, Buic e Preyllon, sulla strada verso Morgex. Altri villaggi pi piccoli sono stati utilizzati nei tempi come residenza a volte permanente, a volte temporanea, il caso di Les Granges, al disotto del colle San Carlo, Promise e La Joux, sul percorso che conduce al colle di Planaval della Valgrisenche, altri ancora non sono legati allagricoltura, ma allo sfruttamento minerario, come Pera Car e Villaret. Alle quote superiori si apre il regno degli alpeggi utilizzati esclusivamente nei periodi estivi. Il patrimonio edilizio del comune ha subito notevoli trasformazioni per adattarsi alle situazioni contingenti, sia che si trattasse di abitazioni per i contadini, sia per i minatori, sia per i turisti. Attualmente larchitettura rurale stata trasformata per destinare gli immobili soprattutto a seconde case, mentre gli edifici di tipo comunitario non sono pi utilizzati. LA THUILE IERI Attestata al termine della Valle dAosta e sulle pendici del Piccolo San Bernardo, da sempre via di comunicazione importante e relativamente facile, La Thuile ha storia antica avendo da sempre svolto unimportante funzione strategica di facilitazione al transito e di presidio della frontiera. In epoca romana si chiamava Ariolica, mentre il nome di Thuilia appare poco dopo lanno Mille per diventare La Thuile nel 1760 e restare tale fino ad oggi, esclusa la breve parentesi del fascismo che le impose il nome di Porta Littoria. La vastissima conca prativa in cui sorge dominata dai 3.846 metri del Rutor con il suo fantastico ghiacciaio che, seppur in fase di progressivo ritiro da qualche decennio, misura pur sempre 9 chilometri quadrati. Il Rutor fu scalato per la prima volta nel 1862 da due inglesi, Matthews e Bonney, insieme con la guida di Chamonix Michel Croz. La vita semplice e dura dellalpe (allevamento, colture di patate, segale, avena) mut profondamente quando La Thuile, sulla fine degli Anni Venti, divent una cittadina mineraria (le prime miniere di carbone a sfruttamento artigianale risalgono per agli inizi dell800). Certamente non erano filoni molto redditizi quelli che la societ Ansaldo-Cogne cominci a sfruttare e inoltre il trasporto del minerale era problematico e costoso ma, come si sa, in quegli anni di autarchia ci si doveva pur accontentare! Ed ecco, pur in condizioni di vita difficili, con la silicosi sempre in agguato, arrivare gli emigranti a fornire manodopera; nellimmediato dopoguerra si raggiunge il top dellattivit estrattiva e il massimo della popolazione residente con quasi 1400 abitanti, poi comincia il declino finch nel 1966 le miniere vennero chiuse. Eppure il paese non croll economicamente, malgrado negli anni minerari si fosse assistito a un forte calo dellallevamento e dellagricoltura, perch il turismo stava gi diventando una bella realt: nel 1948 fu inaugurata la prima seggiovia che saliva a Les Suches e poi il successivo tronco fino a Chaz Dura, ma gi dal 1886 i viaggiatori diretti al Piccolo San Bernardo e qualche coraggioso turista avevano nel National Paris un albergo efficiente per la pausa, il ristoro e, magari, la contemplazione delle vette. LA CHIESA PARROCCHIALE DI SAN NICOLA Il primo documento relativo alla chiesa parrocchiale di La Thuile risale al 1093 quando il vescovo di Aosta Bosone II don al convento di Saint-Gilles di Verrs la chiesa di San Nicola di La Thuile e lospizio del Piccolo San Bernardo. Nella bolla di Eugenio III del 1145 e in quella di Innocenzo III del 1207 la chiesa di La Thuile e lospizio del Piccolo San Bernardo risultano sempre dipendenti da Verrs. Nel 1243 il Prevosto di Verrs con il suo capitolo affid ai canonici del Piccolo San Bernardo la parrocchia di La Thuile con le sue dipendenze e i beni da Pr-Saint-Didier fino a Saint Maurice di Tarentaise (Bourg-Saint-Maurice). La chiesa di La Thuile rimase alle dipendenze dellospizio del Piccolo San Bernardo fino al 1466, quando questultimo pass alla congregazione del Gran San Bernardo, mentre la parrocchia and alle dirette dipendenze del vescovo di Aosta. Nel corso dei secoli XVII e XVIII la chiesa sub drammatici saccheggi da parte delle truppe francesi che scendevano dal colle del Piccolo S. Bernardo. Nel 1794, in particolare, la chiesa, riconsacrata da monsignor PierreFranois de Sales il 15 giugno 1742, venne distrutta da un incendio appiccato dalle truppe francesi. La chiesa attuale, che risale al 1796, costituita da

unaula unica, due absidi laterali e il presbiterio, anchesso absidato, si presenta allinterno estremamente sobria ed essenziale. Dalla lettura delle visite pastorali sappiamo che nel quattrocento vi erano tre altari, il pi importante dedicato a San Nicola, uno dedicato alla Beata Vergine Maria e uno a San Giovanni Battista. Nella casa parrocchiale si conservano alcuni frammenti di un altare del Rosario, databile al XVIII secolo, legato probabilmente allomonima confraternita che operava nella parrocchia di San Nicola. Attualmente, le absidi laterali presentano dei frammenti daltare con colonne tortili, mentre nel presbiterio dietro la semplice mensa in pietra posto su un supporto di fattura moderna un tabernacolo del XVIII secolo proveniente da un altare smontato del convento di Santa Caterina di Aosta. Lattuale sistemazione dellaltare maggiore risale agli anni 1980. Lintero perimetro interno della chiesa accoglie le pitture di Ettore Mazzini eseguite nel 1945 ed illustranti la crocifissione, con una teoria di Santi e Sante, episodi della vita di San Nicola e della Madonna. Di particolare interesse il crocifisso ligneo posto in alto allarco trionfale che si salv miracolosamente dal saccheggio delle truppe francesi, come indica liscrizione dipinta sulla volta: Coeteris cunctis bello vastatis 1794 haec Christi imago mirabiliter intacta remansit. LA THUILE La Thuile, 126 square kilometres of extension, is situated in the South West part of the Aosta Valley Region and borders on seven Aostan towns (Courmayeur, Pr-Saint-Didier, Morgex, La Salle, Avise, Arvier, Valgrisenche) and on four Savoyard ones (Sainte-Foy-en-Tarentaise, Montvalezan, Sez, Bourg-Saint-Maurice). Thanks to its strategic position, it has always been considered an important route, particularly towards France through the ancient Roman way to Gaul at the Little Saint Bernard pass first, and then towards the central valley thanks to the alternative way through the Saint Charles Pass. The widest settlements stand along these outstanding roads: the town centre Capoluogo, Entrves, Petite and Grande Golette, Pont Serrand are along the road towards the Little Saint Bernard Pass, while Bathieu, Moulin, Thovex, Buic and Preyllon stand along the road leading to the town of Morgex. Some smaller villages used to be a permanent or a temporary place to live for agricultural purposes (Les Granges, which is along the road to the Saint Charles pass, Promise and La Joux, which are along the road leading to the Valgrisenche through the Planaval pass), others used to be inhabited because of the ore deposits (Pera Car and Villaret). The world of the mountain pastures, which are exploited in summer time only, stands on higher heights. The building heritage of the town has always undergone great changes in order to suit the different events: there could have been houses for farmers, for miners or for tourists. At the moment, rural architecture has been transformed in order to appoint the existing buildings mainly to tourist houses, while community ones are no longer exploited.

LA THUILE AS IT WAS YESTERDAY La Thuile, that is settled at the end of the Aosta Valley, on the slopes of the Little Saint Bernard Pass, has always been an important and not easy route for contact and exchange and has been known since the ancient past because of the strategic role it used to play in defense of the border. In the Roman period its name was Ariolica whereas its name Thuilia appeared just after the year one thousand and became La Thuile, as it is today, in 1760. In the brief period of Fascism La Thuile was imposed the name of Porta Littoria. The great meadowy valley where La Thuile is settled, is dominated by the Rutor (3.486 meters) and its glacier, which is 9 square kilometres big, although its progressive withdrawal. Two Englishmen, Matthews and Bonney, together with the alpine guide from Chamonix Michel Croz, climbed the Rutor for the first time in 1862. The simple as well as hard life of the mountain pasture (breeding, potatoes, rye and oats crops) deeply changed at the end of the Twenties, when La Thuile became a mining town (although the first coal-mines worked by hand go back to the begin of the nineteenth century). The lodes the Ansaldo-Cogne Society began to exploit were not very profitable and the ore freightage was a problem, but in such a period of autarchy it was necessary to be satisfied of all of this. Although the hard life conditions and the risk of silicosis, a lot of emigrants arrived to offer their skilled labour; just after the World War II the mining activity reached the top and the population achieved 1400 inhabitants. Then the decline began until 1966, when mines have been closed. The economy of the town didnt fall down, although agriculture and breeding had already dropped in mining time, because tourism was becoming an important reality: in 1948 the first chair-lift to Les Suches first, and then the one to Chaz-Dura have been opened; but since 1886 people travelling to the Little Saint Bernard Pass and some brave tourists could find an efficient hotel where they could stop and admire the wonderful peaks: the National Paris. THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAINT NICHOLAS The first document about the parish church of La Thuile dates back to 1093, when Bosone II, bishop of Aosta, gave Saint Nicholas church and the Little Saint Bernards hospice to the Saint-Gilles monastery of Verrs. In Eugene IIIs bull of 1145 and in the Innocent IIIs one of 1207, the church of La Thuile and the hospice of the Little Saint Bernard still appeared as dependent on the city of Verrs. By his chapter in 1243, the priest of Verrs entrusted the priests of the Little Saint Bernard with the parish of La Thuile and with all the properties from Pr-Saint-Didier to Saint Maurice de Tarentaise (Bourg-saint-Maurice). La Thuiles church depended on the hospice of the Little Saint Bernard until 1466, when this one passed under the congregation of the Grand Saint Bernard, while the parish directly passed to the bishop of Aosta. During the 17th and the 18th centuries, the French troops coming down from the Little Saint Bernard Pass sacked the church several times. In 1794, the church that has been consecrated by monsignor Pierre-Franois de Sales on June, 15th 1742, has been destroyed in a fire that has been set by the French troops. The existing church, which dates back to 1796, is made up of one single chamber, two side apses and a presbytery. Inside its very simple and essential. By reading the archives, we know that in the 15th century there were three altars: the most important one was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, another one to the Holy Mary and the last one to Saint John Baptist. The rectory contains some fragments of an altar, which dates back to the 18th Century and which is probably connected to the homonym brotherhood once operating in the parish church of Saint Nicholas. At the present time, the side apses contain some fragments of an altar with twisted columns, while in the presbytery, a tabernacle of the 18th century coming from Saint Catherines monastery in Aosta stands behind the stone altar. The present settlement of the main altar dates back to the Eighties. Ettore Mazzinis paintings made in 1945 and representing some episodes of the Crucifixion and of the lives of Saint Nicholas and of Our Lady can be found all along the inner walls. The wooden crucifix placed above the triumphal arch is very interesting as well; it miraculously survived the plundering by the French troops, as it is reported on the inscription painted on the vault: Coeteris cunctis bello vastatis 1794 haec Christi imago mirabiliter intacta remansit. LA COMMUNE DE LA THUILE La Thuile a une extension de 126 Km2 et se situe sud-ouest de la Valle dAoste; la commune confine avec sept communes valdtaines (Courmayeur, Pr-Saint-Didier, Morgex, La Salle, Avise, Arvier, Valgrisenche) et quatre savoyardes (Sainte-Foy-en-Tarentaise, Montvalezan, Sez, Bourg-Saint-Maurice). Sa position gographique lui a permis de se qualifier comme lieu de passage, notamment vers la France par la clbre route romaine de la Gaule qui conduit au Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard, autrefois appel Alpis Graia et, aprs vers la valle centrale grce au parcours alternatif du Col SaintCharles. Les villages les plus importants se trouvent le long de ces deux routes principales: Chef-lieu, Faubourg, Entrves, Petite et Grande Golette, Pont Serrand se trouvent sur la route du Petit-Saint- Bernard; Bathieu, Moulin, Thovex, Buic et Preyllon se trouvent sur la route de Morgex. Aux temps passs, des villages plus petits ont t exploits comme rsidence, parfois fixe, parfois temporaire: cest le cas des Granges, qui se trouve sous le Col Saint-Charles, de Promise et de La Joux, qui se trouvent le long du parcours qui conduit au Col de Planaval vers la Valgrisenche; il y a aussi des villages qui ne sont pas lis lagriculture, mais lexploitation des mines: Pera Car et Villaret. Aux altitudes suprieures on trouve les alpages qui ne sont exploits que pendant lt. Le patrimoine immobilier de la commune a bien chang pour sadapter aux diffrentes situations, quil sagissait dhabitations pour les paysans, pour les mineurs, ou pour les touristes. A prsent larchitecture rurale a t transforme afin de destiner les maisons comme logement de vacances, tandis que les btiments communautaires ne sont plus exploits.

LA THUILE AUTREFOIS Situ au bout de la Valle dAoste et le long du versant du Petit-SaintBernard, voie de communication importante et relativement facile, le village de La Thuile a une vieille histoire puisquil a depuis toujours une fonction stratgique considrable de passage et de protection de la frontire. A lpoque romaine il sappelait Ariolica, tandis que le nom de Thuilia parat peu aprs lan mil pour devenir La Thuile en 1760 et rester pareil jusqu prsent, sauf pour la brve priode du fascisme qui lui a impos le nom de Porta Littoria. La trs grande cuvette de prs, o le village est n, est domine par le Rutor (3.846 m.) et son glacier fantastique qui mesure 9 Km2, mme si au cours des dix dernires annes il est en train de rgresser. Le Rutor a t escalad pour la premire fois en 1862 par deux Anglais, Matthews et Bonney, avec le guide de Chamonix Michel Croz. La vie simple et dure de lalpage (levage, culture de pommes de terre, seigle, avoine) a beaucoup chang lorsque le village de La Thuile, vers la fin des annes Vingts, est devenu une petite cit minire (mme si les premires mines de charbon exploites de manire artisanale remontent au dbut du 19me sicle). La socit Ansaldo-Cogne a commenc exploiter des filons pas trop abondants, en outre le transport du minral posait quelques problmes et il tait coteux mais, on le sait, pendant ces annes-l dautarchie on devait se contenter! Et voil, mme avec des conditions de vie difficiles, avec la silicose toujours aux aguets, des migrants sont arrivs pour fournir de la main-duvre; pendant laprs-guerre on atteint le top de lactivit extractive et le maximum de la population rsidente avec presque 1400 habitants; mais quelque temps aprs le dclin commence jusqu la fermeture des mines en 1966. Mais la commune ne sest pas effondre conomiquement:

pendant les annes minires on avait connu une perte au niveau de llevage et de lagriculture, mais le tourisme tait dj en train de devenir une belle ralit. En 1948 le premier tlsige qui montait Les Suches, et aprs celui qui montait Chaz-Dura, a t inaugur; mais dj en 1886 les voyageurs qui se dirigeaient vers le Petit-Saint-Bernard et des touristes courageux pouvaient trouver un htel pour leur sjour au National Paris, do ils pouvaient mme contempler les sommets. LGLISE PAROISSIALE SAINT-NICOLAS Le premier document relatif lglise paroissiale de La Thuile date de 1093, lorsque lvque dAoste Bosone II a fait don de lglise de Saint Nicolas de La Thuile et de lhospice du Petit-Saint- Bernard au couvent de Saint-Gilles de Verrs. Dans la bulle de 1145 dEugne III et dans celle de 1207 dInnocent III lglise de La Thuile et lhospice du Petit-Saint-Bernard dpendent toujours de Verrs. En 1243 le Prvt de Verrs a confi par son chapitre aux chanoines du Petit-Saint-Bernard la paroisse de La Thuile avec ses dpendances et les biens de Pr-Saint-Didier jusqu Saint Maurice de Tarentaise (Bourg-Saint-Maurice). Lglise de La Thuile a t dpendante de lhospice du Petit-Saint-Bernard jusqu 1466, lorsque lhospice est pass la congrgation du Grand-Saint- Bernard, tandis que la paroisse est passe directement lvque dAoste. Pendant les sicles XVIIme et XVIIIme lglise a subi beaucoup de pillages de la part des troupes franaises qui descendaient du col du Petit-Saint-Bernard. En 1794, en particulier, lglise consacre par monseigneur Franois de Sales le 15 juin 1742 a t dtruite par un incendie mis par les troupes franaises. Lglise actuelle, qui remonte lan 1742, est constitue par une seule nef, deux absides latrales et un presbyterium, avec un intrieur extrmement sobre et essentiel. Daprs la lecture des visites pastorales nous savons que

pendant le XVme sicle il y avait trois autels, dont le plus important tait ddi Saint Nicolas, un autre la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie et lautre encore Saint Jean Baptiste. Dans la maison paroissiale il y a des fragments dun autel du Rosaire, datable du XVIIIme sicle, li probablement lhomonyme confrrie qui oprait dans la paroisse de Saint Nicolas. A prsent, les absides latrales prsentent des fragments dautel avec des colonnes torses, tandis que dans le presbyterium, derrire la simple mense en pierre, un tabernacle du XVIIIme sicle qui provient du couvent de Sainte Catherine de la ville dAoste est plac sur un support moderne. Lactuelle disposition du matre-autel remonte aux annes 1980. Tout le primtre lintrieur de lglise contient les peintures de Ettore Mazzini excutes en 1945 et qui illustrent la crucifixion, par une srie de saints et de saintes, pisodes de la vie de Saint Nicolas et de la Vierge Marie. Le crucifix en bois qui se trouve sur la poutre de gloire est trs intressant car il a t sauv par miracle du pillage des troupes franaises, comme il est indiqu sur linscription de la vote: Coeteris cunctis bello vastatis 1794 haec Christi imago mirabiliter intacta remansit.
